Jane’s Addiction changed everything. This band was incredibly important to my entire circle of friends.

Wow I wish I knew your friends lol. All of my friends thought Bush was awesome. Jane's and early Pumpkins and whatnot were like my little secret for so long. There was an obvious difference at the time, as there still is, between bands being risky in order to accomplish something special and bands trying to stay afloat. Don't blame the ones trying to stay afloat though; they're just not very interesting.
@@RobotAdolf not true, many of the grunge bands were already formed or about too when Jane’s was around. They helped knocked down some walls for sure along with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

yeah, ask dave navarro about that. i take this story to be more than anecdotal folklore, but it was reported that mr. navarro once wore a shirt at a show that said "12%' (or something to that effect) after the band was signed to warner brothers and perryman aggressively advocated for more than twice the share of any other band member, and got it. i resist saying this, but what a P O S E R.
I love Perry. He know's life is short, and he want's us all to have a good time. After a night of partying, go for a walk, and a maybe a swim. Balance.
I couldn't agree more...I love pulling all nighters like only a drug store cowboy can, scribble poems in my journal, strum the guitar, a smoke in silence beneath a full yellow 4:44 am moon, lost in thought and then, like a bell is wrung, a sudden clarity snaps into focus the first signs that something new has come with the dawn to turn the page from a beautiful night to a promising day, remember, never forget, all is forgiven and as long as my heart holds a beat, anything is possible and there's not a moment to waste..
Another thing people don't realize, is that their last "real" album was in '90. They broke up in '91. But holy shit were they a breath of fresh air at the time. I met Perry at the Howard Stern movie premiere and told him how when I first heard them that I knew things were getting better. He grabbed my hands, said "that's beautiful, man... now you behave yourself".

What was amazing is that that album and those songs came out late 80s and 90, and yet they played almost continuously right up against new stuff that was coming up right on through the end of the century. As if they had just been released. That was just how current it always stayed.

52 years young Perry was always a huge influence on me and still is today. His eclectic talent and caring persona seemed rare in the music industry.
I can’t say how much I love the way Perry looks so detached from everything but then has these insane flashes where his vision comes through like a punch to the gut. And geeze it hurts so good.
It’s bittersweet the way being “allowed” to express your art can turn into an open faucet that pours it out too quickly before even realizing it.
You get so used to “turning on the faucet” that the thought of the magic running out is unimaginable.
I’m sorry I wasn’t able to experience it in its prime but I’m sure glad I can still “feel it” by watching these.
Imagine all the soul touching art we aren’t able to experience now because life is too tough for the majority to experience creative freedom like these guys had.

These albums are some of the most incredible. I don't know how you can keep up that intensity. There are three bands that live with me from that time, and none of them beat my veins harder than Jane's Addiction.

This interview is so sad...he came in it for the true art of music making, and here's the sad realization that the money hungry "industry" just wants a piece of you...I'm so glad he didn't let it get to him too badly and that he is still making great music today. Love him!

Kinda classy...but also creative and weird. A bit feminine and a bit masculine.
Perry's always been a stylish guy...even today. But while he just seems to wear basic designer fashion these days....back then, when he was throwing looks together on his own, he really created a stunning visual image for himself. He's a smart and creative guy....he clearly understood that visual presentation is a huge part of creating the aura surrounding the world of the music.

But in this interview, those Heroin eyes are bigger than life and yes, his style was out of this world cool.
This band has been part of my life since 1987 in SoCal. They were earth shattering to my world at the time
I wish I grew up in those days I’m 30 now
I got caught in a freak rainstorm coming from an alley after we saw Jane's in Louisville in 2012. (that was my 11th show since 89) Me and my girl took off running from the weather straight to the basement of a parking garage by the venue. Right next to the tour busses, I stayed and dodged security. A moment later I was hugging the biggest influence in my life. My wife had to speak for me at first cause I was tounge tied. She made sure I held it together long enuogh to tell him how much his music taught and inspired me.He was so nice and cool. We talked for 10 to 15 minutes about Everything!!! Best Day Ever !!!!!!!!

When, at the beginning of the interview, Perry Farrell says he's very proud of the record, he's absolutely right! Ritual De Lo Habitual ranks among the most important albums released in 1990!
its one of the best albums, ever.
This interview is pretty wild. He's a young man at the crossroads and he's emotionally bare in a way that a lot of people might be too inhibited or ashamed to be, but out of naivety or passion he's putting himself fully out there. He's frustrated but there's something very beautiful in how he's expressing that. You get the sense that he wants to push people forward. I love Perry Farrell so much.

I have come to the conclusion, when you open yourself up like that, not a lot of people will stay with you or listen. But it's still the only way to do it in my view.
So glad he’s where he’s at now, mentally and physically . I thought for sure in the 90’s we would lose Perry.

Man, he did what he said, I hope he knows that. I went in to a couple of their shows back in the day and I could really let go with them. No drugs, no alcohol, nothing but me dancing. Their music made you do that, it was a true re-connecting with myself. I can see why some people mistrusted this band, but they were really positive and life-affirming, and honest. Look at the past 20 years and you can see they were right about some of the things they were pointing out. They did a great thing, I think, and there's been nothing else out there like them since.
+ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn Nope! They did them so that I didn't have to. I miss them, but I'm also thrilled I got to see them live a couple of times. I was one of the first people to get kicked out by security at the Tower show in Philadelphia - just for dancing. Perry was enraged at Tower's security guards for bullying the audience. The newspapers made it out to be the band's fault but it was Tower's management and staff who were in the wrong. The audience were well behaved suburban kids who were enjoying the show. What were they going to do, sit in their seats? We were up and dancing.

jane’s changed my life. i met casey niccoli in ventura about 20 years ago. man, i had to collect myself. told her what an important part of my life this music was, how they blew my little mind wide open. she was ultimately cool. gave me a necklace & we talked about the new album.
This video shows an honest and vulnerable artist and that is why I loved perry. I am very happy I got to meet him once and told him I loved him.
Anyone who saw them live back in 1991 knows how blessed an experience that was ✨ ✨ ✨
I saw them in 91, Lush opened. One of the best shows I've ever been to
May 7th, 1991 in Pittsburgh, PA. An experience it was, he definitely achieved what he states there at the end.
Montreal 1991 I think it was Feb or March - an unreal experience !

@@lowandodor1150Yes ! I remember the stage being totally mystical and cluttered and full of decorations and relics and flowers, colours. Incredible. I’ve tried to find video of the Montreal show I was at on UA-cam but can’t find anything. I’ll never forget that show- Perry Farrell was like this wild 6 foot 5’ long lanky giant onstage and his voice sounded like 10000 angels/ghosts singing at once. I will never forget the power of that show.

Listening to Perry talk, I had a memory, an emotional flashback even, to how I felt when I was 13, 16, 18 or whatever age when I still felt really alive. I know that he knows how people feel, his empathy is evident. I'm 45 next week and I haven't been happy in 20 years. what have I become? And I'm even sober as I write this (mostly). Shit.

I hear you brother, I’m 52 those magical days of our youth are long gone but now I focus on my family, work, and the music. Your never too old for the music. It has always and will always be my therapy, well and bourbon and weed lol.
Such a unique time in history, it was like the 60s got mixed in with the 80s, that was what the 90s was kind of like, but way cooler.

Imagine being in a band with this guy and being on tour 24/7. I'm impressed the original Jane's Addiction were a thing for as long as they were.

lol....ikr? But then add to that all the tension between those four personalities. And the fact they were all doing lots of drugs....with Perry and Dave doing a gargantuan amount of hard drugs.
Honestly, I bet it was an intense creative fun time.....but so intense that there's no way it could sustain like that forever. I highly recommend reading the book Whores. It's a first-hand account of the band compiled from nothing but direct quotes of all who were involved in the orbit of the band. Super interesting and fun read!

I'm glad I watched this interview. It makes him seem a little more down to earth - less arrogant than the early days.
He kinda does sound on the verge of tears...especially at the end.
Then again, heavy opiate use often can make your voice sound like that....tense, constricted, reedy.

At the end of the day he owns lollapalooza, so it turned out great. Just saw them with the Pumpkins in Milwaukee was fantastic
AWESOME! I had this on VHS soooooo long ago and it got played so much that it stopped working... I vividly remember this interview and Perry's honesty, with him about to crack and break down as he describes the fuckery of the machine and how it affected him. Super sad, but I'm glad to see it again. Thanks Jane's.... you and your music truly changed my life.

Perry was a mad artist, a true genius....you can really see the struggle he was having with his desire for art vs the demands of commercial music....im sad to say he lost this battle and in his own words he lost his creativity. A few years later you see a shift in his personality to who he is today....just watch any interviews he did in 92 onwards.....20 yrs on i had forgotten this interview and had formed the view, like many others that see all the rubbish he does now, that he was always a tool but that isnt true....at the time of early JA he was a music god...such a sad interview in retrospect, like watching the death of one of the worlds greatest artists

Perry says he doesn’t care about stacks of greens but if true he wouldn’t have pressured the band to take less than They deserved and for him to take 50% of publishing, leaving the other 3 to split the remaining 50%. Eric was super pissed that’s the beginning of the end.. then when Eric swooped Perry’s chick.. well that was the end... janes ain’t janes without Eric.

I first heard Janes Addiction in 2004 when I was 14. True Nature was the opening track for MLB 2005. From there I discovered Nothing's Shocking, Ritual De Lo Habitual, and Strays.

It's kind of sad to watch this because it's been pretty spelled out in interviews that everything on Nothing and Ritual was written by 1987 or 1988, so it's actually pretty accurate that nothing new was ever written after that. Another legendary band that fell to the pressures of success. Wish that could have been different, especially for this band.
Remember the rock shirt circulating in the 80s that said “we came, we saw, we kicked ass“? Nothing left to say. It’s almost the way it’s supposed to happen and I’m so glad I was there when it did.
They fell, just like others did, as a result of the corruption, hungry mawing, grasping, thieving bastard record industry. I almost held hope at the turn of the century that this monster was finally going to fall as a result of the Internet. But like anyone that has power, money, and a hunger to maintain while grasping for more and more, they will fight to the bitter end. And they will grasp for even more if they have opportunity. Frankly, if the big recording mega-multinational record industry corporations were to fall, I would fart in the general direction-a kiss goodbye from my asshole. They've sucked the life out of so many artists and left them to rot when they were nothing but husks. Yet, we keep on giving them our money over and over and over.

Like my other sad sack post herein, I understand that avenue. Most of my life it's been on and off, one thing or another. After my best friend died at 18 I fell in with a different group of people and I've essentially been trying to kill my self ever since, basically. In 1994 no one was suggesting therapy in the small northern town I came from. Wasn't even a consideration. Eh, ancient history now.

Great that Navarro, Perkings and Farell didn't just cry because cruel life and miserable fame, they just lift their own weight, share their goods, overcome weakness, didn't play the victim role and didn't kill themselves like many rock stars from 90's, you know, those playing the "rebeld, difficult child" role. At the end I look them as really healthy guys,
He makes me want to snap out of the decade-long, post-art school stupor that has stunted my creativity. I want to start painting again. Have fun doing it, instead of worrying that it's going to suck, and then never start.
Felt this! This might sound fucked up or like skewed but you only have one life and if you were to never wake up again then the chances of ever painting or doing anything else that you loved would be lost. What I'm trying to convey is that you only have one life so live it to your best. I hinder myself a lot and it sucks ass so this is all too familiar. We often listen to others more than ourselves and play by societies rules. We are also too stuck in our heads, but I suggest still going forth through the uncertainty, for you might find hidden gems.
Perry is by far one of the top front man of most bands in the 80s and 90s by far
2:30 I know that feeling, it’s absolutely horrible. To go from being able to do so much in a short amount of time to being unable to do anything at all feels like a tumor weighing you down.
For anyone who feels a tragic decline in the music quality over the past few decades- pay close attention to this man

DAMN, that's so beautiful. I love him and his music so much! It really reminds me of interviews I've seen w/ Kurt Cobain talking about how stifling the "industry" is, and how much it drags them down & causes their creativity (music) to suffer. Makes me sad that such unique artistic expression was stampeded by rich old fat bastards in suits looking for the next goldmine-in-the-flesh to suck dry! I know a lot of musicians that expect to go triple platinum in their first week bitch about copyright infringement now, but the true artists (Nirvana, Janes Addiction, Tool, Pearl Jam) of that day would probably have welcomed this internet revolution (as PJ does) where we can hear music that's GOOD and spread it along- free of charge- to people who appreciate it and bypass the record company bigwigs. I'm glad I was young enough to have my parents spend $12.99 on a CD w/ 1 catchy tune written by one person, recorded by two other people, and lip syched by two other good looking people (Milli Vanilli) for Christmas instead of being old enough at the time of the CD "revolution" to work my ass off and spend my hard earned money donating 98% of sales to record labels, managers, lawyers, and publicists when the musicians were making pennies per CD sale... Now I buy albums on Amazon for $1.99. Lets love & appreciate music, pass it on, get inspired, write our own, and cut out the middle man! Rock on!!!

people wanting to know why JA broke up, this is it....this is Perry pouring out his soul on what was failing for him to continue.....yes there were pay disputes that perry caused and creative differences developed but in my opinion they were symptoms of what Perry is describing is the cause - a loss of creativity from commercialism. he lost this battle and this lead to the problems that broke up JA.
