I'm so happy to see these! I was a young girl (single digits!) when I first discovered Perry. I couldn't understand his lifestyle choices and he spoke about things I didn't understand. But...he just got me. Just reached out and zapped me. I've loved him ever since and it's great to go back and see the evolution.

Wish I felt as good as he is feeling right there.. Been clean for years now but damnit I miss that feeling. Especially living in a busted broken up body that hurts like nothing I can truly describe. But fkit I’ll stay sober till the day I know is the end and then I’m going to take anything and everything I can get my hands on.

A relapse could be the spiritual experience you didnt know was out there. That's why you never want to waste a good relapse. Now you know the difference between those who appear as if they know and those who know who knows

Nick McKerrell Much as i didn't care for the show, i loved seeing him with his wife and children on that rock star show. A part of me was like "Oh look, now he's rich, and has it all, and has left "the cause" behind." But the better part of me was like "Dude, i am so happy for you."
Can't be easy to go through all of that and come out ok, and happy.

Having been around that 'scene' in my past, actually attracted to it because of this man and his band alone (ahh, impressionable youth...), it's actually remarkable he managed to come through it alive. He's obviously completely under Morpheus' spell during this interview and I almost prefer this subdued Perry versus the space-agey, schizophrenic man of every interview since.
If you listen to any of Eric Avery's interviews, there was an obvious clash between Perry and Eric, the bass-player accusing him of being egocentric and ultra-sensitive, as most great artists seem to be; but the power-plays between the two created some of the most original and most exciting music of the late 80's/early 90's. I was a young boy then, received my first 'Ritual' album (the censored white CD) from my first Columbia '10 CDs for 1 Penny' subscription...may have even used my real name on that particular order. I never did get to see them live at that point, though I did have tickets to the first Lollapalooza at the Irvine Spectrum, but my best friend's sister couldn't end up giving us a ride. I did have concert shirts, however, purchased at some Hot Topic predecessor called 'WindJammer', and often wore them every day of the week during the early months of my freshman year of junior high.
I never went for any of the reunion tours, went so far as to buy tickets for an Oakland show in maybe '96, but ultimately just gave it away to a buddy...somehow just didn't seem right to see them humping along for a payday, minus Eric.
I do remember being ecstatic when Porno for Pyros first made their appearance; staying up late to tape-record their first single off K-ROQ, maybe it was 'Cursed Female?', but they were no Jane's...especially after that 'Aliens....?' song became so popular.
Don't know why I'm rambling so much about Perry and Jane's Addiction, but that band meant so much to me during my early/mid-teens. Unfortunately, to such an extremely impressionable youth as myself, they seemed to glorify drug and alcohol-use as a mostly positive route to enhance one's creativity. I'm actually surprised they, and especially Perry, were permitted to so openly glorify heroin, (watch 'The Gift' for reference). Even during this interview, he's got such an opiate-laced warble to his voice I'm surprised he didn't nod off right in front of Kurt.
Anyhow, somehow he and all the other members of the band lived through their years of debauchery, can't say the same for some of those in my inner circle, back when my circle revolved around a bit of debauchery itself. It's sad to hear news of Jane's playing the local circuit these days, I can't imagine it being anywhere near the experience one would've witnessed back before their 'first' demise. See kids, Jane's reunions are just like drug addiction itself: you're always chasing that elusive, initial high (the original lineup), but all you end up with some sorry state of affair with the bassist for Guns'n'Roses and a willingness to play live at some Goddamn tribal casino in San Bernardino. Just say no!

Their 96”/97” relapse tour was incredible, probably their best tour with Flea on bass. I thought Perry was very inconsistent early on but by then he has learn to sing, was consistent, and could still sing them in the original keys they were written unlike today.

‘Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt’ is the best work Frusciantes ever done. Why? because while making that album he wasn’t corrupted, polluted by the juvenile idiocy of the RHCP. John was alchemically using the right amount of dope-Speedballs-(Heroin&Cocaine)for the proper length of time to evoke an amazing body of sound, all pulled from the Aethyrs.

Thats very insightful. I completely agree. I came up in the 90s in Detroit, rite in the middle of crack and H. And by 93 was completely strung out. And now that Im clean, I live everyday in regret, and Im paying the consequences of a wasted youth. Yeah you can really see how Kurt is just fascinated by "Perry the addict, Wow hes so cool" 2 months ago I listened to a radio interview with Loder, I never realized what a huge star Kurt THINKS he is, I was not impressed by him at all.

I have to imagine it must be fun to be super creative and famous and give interviews to people just hanging on every word you say while you're high out of your mind. Drugs, certain ones anyway, give that edge...that sense that every word you say and move you make is the definition of 'cool.' It doesn't last and unless you get past that, you die...but youth + drugs + creativity are a potent mix. We're all fascinated by it...let's be honest.

Hey world, I saw a clip or a movie or a doc with Perry Farrell trying to score cocaine.. In this film he even saw a doctor to prescribe him valium... And he was with a girl in this film or doc? What was it that I watched?

he is still bizarre, and in his personal life, it shows, too. he nuzzled the neck of one of his back up dancers (the ones he modeled to look like his ex-girlfriend, Casey Niccoli), and when he does perform as JA, or PfP, he uses her, and these other dancing girls.. "the asthetic of it all", he says it, himself... _.-

I'm not sure what you're really saying...your comment is pretty confusing. Personally, all I want out of life is to create the most creative art possible. If that kills me at 40, so be it. It's worth it. Life without art, is not life worth living, imo.

yeah...Loder can be kind of douchey sometimes. Clearly a guy who wanted to be a rockstar, got old, and did the second best thing he could to achieve that dream. I hear you on the wasted youth/drugs thing. I'm 29(will be 30 in a few months) and I'm shocked by how fast my "roaring 20s" passed me by. I write and record music...and have dabbled in drugs along with that. Drugs and music go hand in hand. Now, I'm on suboxone and smoke weed and trying to make my dream happen while I have the time! O_o

Might have been 'Gift' an experimental docudrama filmed by Perry and then girlfriend Casey Niccoli , it was made in 1990 with the making of Jane's album " Ritual de lo Habitual', it got delayed however and Warner never released it till 93.

Great movie. Best part? Trying to score some crack, and he's dressed in a dress, and floppy hat. Asks the guy for 15 dollars worth, and the dude goes 50? And Perry goes "No, FIFTEEN!!!" Who the fuck asks for FIFTEEN??? I'm surprised the dude didn't tell him to fuck off!

back then, it was okay in interviews, openly (listen to the producer encouraged it, ironically enough, named KURT) to be all romantically poetic, an artist bohemian on chemicals, in the 90s, it was all blood roses and the banshees.
