People should learn fundamentals before practicing a style as exaggerated as manga/anime styles. If they start off doing only anime styles, they'll realize later on that they don't have a good basis of fundamentals like anatomy, and have a harder time improving their art as they'd hit a plateau due to the limited style they locked themselves into; I can attest to this as it is something I learned the hard way. A book like this clearly aimed towards children only perpetuates this trend.
That is sadly what happened to me and few of my friends. As far as I know I'm the only one still drawing and I'm trying to keep the anime style out, or at least make it look not...generic.
When I really started drawing, I was drawing ponies, but I quickly started drawing anime style. I think now, 6 years later, I've managed to phase it out somewhat, and develop a bit more of a cartoon-y style, but I still have those fundamentals of anime style that I took with me.
Honestly anime in general isn’t a great style to adhere to. It’s a great medium in and of itself but it speaks nothing for stylization and limits you from adapting to different techniques and medium.
my favorite thing about christopher hart's books is when you can pinpoint the pages where he commissioned an artist to draw for him, and where he actually drew himself because of the staggering difference in quality
The art he commissioned is actually pretty cute at times, though nothing special and probably won't teach you anything. Still it's pretty damn funny to compare and contrast the art.
@General Sotheny He's improved a lot lately actually, but yeah, I remember feeling so bummed out when his drawing books were the only ones available at my local library, hahah. One of his more recent books actually looks pretty good: watch?v=g5Lw7pcEc1w

Christopher Hart in general should not be writing "How to Draw" books, honestly. But especially not "How to Draw Manga" books, 'cause it's pretty clear that he doesn't know what he is doing when it comes to drawing in anything but a Western cartoon style, and is therefore least qualified person to teach others how to do this.
A Jewish Physical Therapist Who Loves Bread I have a book by him here at home and it's about chibis, the art is great but I think it's stolen because one of the images cuts into another one, it has a white square behind it. Plus the anime looks super good in it so I doubt he did it.
...But it all originated from the "Manga" books, which inspired children with low self-esteem to create every cringe-worthy Internet fad since. That's what I think, anyway.

I've seen a bunch of his work out of curiosity as he sounded familiar, and while I keep in mind his how-to drawing lessons are pretty basic, I have to say that they're just really...boring to look at. I'm not really sure what it is, they just look like cookie-cutter, generic styles in anything he does. Some are better than others, but overall they don't really pop or look distinct. They don't look recognizable like you know it's his work, it's just very blah

Its basically just the first things Westerners who aren't familiar with it notice on a cursory glance. This book basically just comes off as a book written by someone whose familiarity with the style (and art skill in general) was kind of dubious. Apparently he's since done another book on it that was actually good, so unless he was paying someone else to do it for him, it seems like he's improved since then. I think I remember seeing this one in art supply stores around high school and that was almost 20 years ago for me, so I think this one's pretty old.
honestly tho has he actually read any manga or watched any anime at all? He looks at naruto and he looks at his art and says "yeah this is very accurate"
I know right? It's like a student finishing their work quickly but didn't even waste his own time on checking or showing his work... Chris Hart literally just doesn't give a shit about how his art isn't that good and he compares it to other anime that he thinks it looks similar-
It's even funnier when you consider the cringe it spawned... namely, those who only draw manga through vague instructions, and not try to learn actual anatomy.
