- Once the lifeline of Bhutan, the 403km Trans-Bhutan Trail connected the affluent western districts of Haa to the remote far eastern Trashigang.
The trail dates back to the 16th Century, and was used by monarchs, traders, pilgrims and messengers for hundreds of years, but fell into disuse soon after Bhutan developed its highway in the 1960s.
Now, more than 60 years later, the historic trail has reopened.

I appreciate the fact she says it was unbelievable that the Garp could travel 80km a day. It means it is historically true and not semi mythical. Many people can do that distance nowadays, any semi decent marathon enthusiast can probably complete task but to do that without proper road and modern footwear, deep in mountainous thickets is definitely a godly feat in any day and age.
As a long distance hiker myself, this is such an interesting way to look at it. Thanks for the perspective☺
Also remember that marathons aren't going up and down mountains at incredibly high elevations.
id believe if the garp hiked a tall bhutanese mountain in a day or two vertically up then paraglided to his location in a few hours tranversing his destination, and hundreds of miles

I visited Buthan almost 20 years ago and it was one of the most wonderful and moving trips I have ever made. I hope to go back.

I have been through Bhutan and it is country full of life and beauty, but also sad issues. Coincidentally, British born I spent most of my early years in India, and became a Buddhist. Or shall I say I practice Buddhism. To see Buddhist practices in varying countries will bring great knowledge and hopefully you can make it someday.

I have trekked through Bhutan, and most of the trails are winding and only a few hikers to be seen. Unlike the Camino and other treks around the world, the villages along the route are incredibly small. It is worth the trip, but do understand it is less populated than most countries with these trails.

This trail is only for Bhutanese, Indians and Bangladeshi citizens. Anyone outside those countries, you can’t trek anywhere you want. You have to have a guide like the ones in North Korea for you to visit the country.

There are various theories about the origin of the name of Bhutan. For example, there is the Sanskrit word ``boouttan'' which means ``highlands''.

I have threw hiked all over this planet and began doing segments of the spice trade routes as a teenager. I’ve completed possibly 80% of the treks from Southeast Asia through the “stan’s” and then ending in Ukraine or Turkey. Travel is the best education ever!
To make this a news story, I wish the BBC had asked questions like, have there been plans made to keep international tourists from destroying parts of the trail by overuse, excessive consumption etc. For example are there quotas or limits to how many can be on sections at once? Will we be helping the economy by booking trips or is it something that only rich travellers who hire guided tours can do. I am excited to hike this trail but I wish there was more information in this otherwise beautiful video.

I've been tp Bhutan end of February. It was wonderful and Tigers Nest was a highlight for sure. I'm just a bit worried for this trail as the money to enter Bhutan is very high. Paying 400 dollars a day is a lot of money for anyone.
Good luck to them though, the most important thing is to preserve the beauty and pristine environment, which would be gone with lots of tourism.
Wow, I guess that is off of my bucket list. Doesn’t fit into my budget that’s for sure.
A lovely country I dreamt of to visit , but I cant do trek for lengths and hours. Maybe on its villages can be reach by vehicles. The preservation of nature as its ones of its priority attracts me , and its culture of simple life not so tempted with materialistic and consumerism lifestyle.
Actually, Bhutanese tour operators also offer specialty trips for flora and fauna enthusiasts.

Very few visitors required at that price to greatly affect the national economy. Plus fewer, better behaved people on the trail will keep it natural for longer

This trail is very cool but I definitely wouldn't called 80km an "unbelievably inhuman distance". We have something called "the death race" here in Canada which is 125km in 24 hours. So while 80km is impressive it really isn't that unbelievable. In fact I did the Berg lake trail here in Canada in like 12 hours, which is 42km and I wasn't even in good shape at the time.
Climbing a small mountain would take one's breath away, it would be incredible if you would walk 20 km in mountains of Bhutan 🤔
@@Steverog3 The death race is a gain/loss of 17,000ft over the 125km, it also takes place in the mountains.
amazing... but this account of story goes like he does that 80km in around 12 hours (from dawn to dusk) and that's what we consider inhuman. cheers....!
@@ngawangtenzin3258 I think perhaps you're just adding that stipulation of 12 hours with no proof. In fact after just a bit of research, it seems this Garp was more of a folk hero. I'm just saying that unbelievably inhuman distance is very strong wording considering no one is gifted with supernatural ability. If he did this, it means others can too, and therefore it's not unbelievably inhuman lol. I dislike strong language like this in regards to legends with no proof. It's how intelligent people are fooled into believing things that aren't true. All religions in the world have these kinds of stories and very poor evidence to support the claims.
@@poke_warrior if u r seeking proof, u gotta visit Bhutan and seek more. Our beliefs are different, u will understand about inhuman supernatural ability of few folk heros of Bhutan if u get to know about the country and its people even to these days.
