There was no India then. There was already more than 20 separate kingdoms on that triangular piece of land at that time. The Kingdom of Gupta where Nalanda was situated was just one of them. By mid 6th century CE, it was already splintered into many little kingdoms. India, as a single country was created by the British in 1947.

Nalanda University was not part of the Indus Valley Civilization (if that's what you're referring to); it was part of ancient Magadha. The Indus Valley Civilization had declined long before, around 1300 BCE. They're both Indian civilizations, though. Magadha descended from the Indus Valley Civilization.
Yes, I agree. Please view the UA-cam video, 'Nalanda sangaramma in its entirety. Gautam Buddha.' You will realize the sangarama was 25 km sq km in size. Nalanda was amazing.

India has contributed hugely to world and human civilization. Throughout history it has heavily influenced its neighbours - including China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and other south east Asian countries. It was a powerhouse in mathematics, architecture, engineering, mining, manufacturing, philosophy. It had one weakness though - and that was being a peaceful, non-violent civilization with very aggressive, primitive, warring neaighbours to the north and west of it. This resulted in repeated invasions - theft, destruction and pillage - continuing until relatively recently with the latest invaders from Europe. However, time and time again India has recovered from these repeated assaults and has always come back stronger. India's future, as always, is extremely bright.
Buddhist India was not weak. Based on the historical facts Mauryan empire's army grew in numbers and stronger in order to protect borders and maintain peace within the borders. In fact the following Buddhist empires like Shung and Gupta also prevailed strong and successfully fended-off all foreign attacks. From the last 800-900 years is when the brahmanism (or hinduism) began to take a hold and with brahmanism came the division of Indian society. This very division led to the destruction of India's actual and real culture of equality and peace. Divided country then was not able to defend itself from any attacks and it is evident that the week Indians such as, brahmins always ended-up supporting and cooperating the invaders. The oldest university of the world is "Takshila University" where the likes of Chanakya were trained. Nalanda university cannot be attributed alone to Buddhism. The school taught all the Darshanas or philosophies as well as Vedas, Ayurveda, Surgery, Metallurgy, Rasayan-Shashtra(Chemisty and Alchemy) etc. Also, this was not the only one to be destroyed by the invading Muslim Turks who wanted to remove traces of anything non-Islamic. Bakhtiyar Khilji, who destroyed the university came after the doctor from this university helped cure the Sultan in Delhi or some high profile member of his family. This is how they repaid the ones who helped save their lives. Another important fact to note is that this university was supposed to be renovated and revamped quite long ago, but the command was given to a Noble Prize winner Economist Amartya Sen who after his stint had nothing to show except a small locked room. Also, Nalanda was not the only university to be destroyed in Bihar(and by extension, Bengal), let alone India. Examples are Vikramshila, Oodantpuri and many more. @@aryanhassan4659 When we look at the India of CE 9-10 centuries, Gupta dynasty (which had ruled over an area of 4.4 million km² Vs the Roman empire of 2.3 million km²) had declined & most parts of north India was ruled by decentralised kingdoms. On a wider scale, it was also the period when Roman & Sassanid empires to the west of India had collapsed. To the north, Tang dynasty in China had cut-off trade through the Silk Road. The resource-deprived central asian tribes resorted to violent raids & there was no unified resistance from any direction. In India, they targeted treasure-pots for economic loot, crushed all centers of faith /cuture/learning as a mark of ideological warfare, induldged in extensive slave trade & forced conversions. In this process, what happened was the triumph of the invading barbarians by brute force over a civilization that was far more evolved & sophisticated. Sri Lanka was one of the first nations outside India to adopt Buddhism as the state religion, after the Mauryan King Ashoka (who converted to Buddhism from Hinduism ) sent his son Mahinda and daughter Sanghamitra to Sri Lanka to spread Buddhist ideals and values. The ancient Mauryan Empire of India started with the Hindu king Chandragupta Maurya and stretched across almost the entire Indian subcontinent and included present - day Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Incidentally, the capital of the Mauryan Empire was the city of Patliputra (modern day Patna in Bihar) and the original Nalanda University was located in Rajgir, which is only a short distance away from Patna. Rajgir is where the ruins of the vast Nalanda University has been excavated and its a huge place - I have visited as a child. Sri Lanka might have a Nalanda University, but it isn't the original one which was destroyed by the Islamist invader Bakhtiyar Khilji, who brought Islam to North India. His successors ruled India following Iz. lam.ic holy books regarding the treatment of non - believers and hence, huge numbers of the peace loving Hindus and non - violent Buddhists had to convert into Khilji's religion, in order to survive. In fact, Bakhtiyarpur is a town still present a stone's throw away from Nalanda and probably built up on the ruins of Buddhist and Hindu dwellings and structures. So India is probably the only place in the world, which still has cities, towns and roads named after some of the worst non - Indian and brutal Hinduphobic tyrants of the world from Khilji to Churchill - all responsible for the deaths of millions of Indians directly or indirectly.

In 1006, the Muslim Kara-Khanid ruler Yusuf Kadir (Qadir) Khan of Kashgar conquered Khotan, ending Khotan's existence as an independent state. Wait...was Nalanda University ever "lost"? I thought the site was always known, but it was ruins. I learned about this place being considered one of the world's oldest universities when I was reading about Xuanzang - the Chinese monk who travelled to India in the 7th century in search of original sacred Buddhist texts, and whose journey inspired the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West". It is good to know that the ancient university is being revived.
It wasn't lost. You are right. It was just left in ruins. Muslim Kings ruled the Bihar region for 550 years. They did not allow for the reconstruction of Hindu or Buddhist sites.
No it was indeed lost. Infact, even Takshashila was lost. Many of these sites were found after deciphering of Brahmi script. Infact in early 19th century, British considered Mauryan Empire and Chanakya to be mythology as well and thought Takshashila was some kinda imaginary place.

Amazing. As an Indian I have learnt about Nalanda as part of my history in school. I didn't know about its revival.
If the Indian givernment increase the budget of the ASI, one will find new things everyday.

In this process, what happened was the triumph of the invading barbarians by brute force over a civilization that was far more evolved & sophisticated. The impact was such that the faultlines still runs deeper even after 1000 years in the social psyche. For any real sense of reconciliation, every Indian without exception must acknowledge this fact & pledge to unity by derecognizing the sheer venom inflicted by Khiljis & Aurangzebs (just as Germans commendably did of the deeds of Hitler).
Very harsh. The British were great archeologists. So a lot of research was done on India's past. And great places and people get forgotten. It happens.

Maintaining peace - I think that’s one mistake India has made since ancient times and that is why it wasn’t able to preserve anything of value! Heavy militarization and security of the borders, both physical and the abstract, is important to maintain the peace, unity and things of value inside. Was this also an ancient university, or is the name just in memory? Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country...were any of the ancient manuscripts taken to Sri Lanka when it was destroyed?
There are..... Nalanda was very much connected with anuradhapura. All these places were part of the ancient Buddhist world... I'm amazed by the fact that u were able make the connection.

Growing up watching journey to the west. :)
My grandmother will tell us buddhist stories from Viranasi. I thought this city was a myth and did not think it existed until I start following India's history.
What a special place.
Can someone tell the population of India then? Was it always this crowded?
@@mananmody9355 I mean that people knew that the ruins were there. They didn't know exactly what they were but it wasn't as if they were lost in a jungle like the Teotihuacan Temples in Mexico
@@dwarasamudra8889 true.
It's great shame that there is a railway station near that ruins, named after bakhtiar khilji who burned that University . no political party have courage to change that station's name because of vote bank.
Do something to change it
every conquerors done such cruel acts for example sack of bagdad by hulagu Khan a Buddhist himself, burning of tamil hindu Jaffna library by Buddhist sri Lanka
Yes
Nalanda has arisen from the ashes of history. The old knowledge was never really lost. Xuanxang and other legendary students had carried back to China and Tibet, invaluable scriptures, oral knowledge that had been safely preserved in monasteries. This ancient knowledge will form the core of the revived international Nalanda.
Nalanda was not destroyed by bukhtiyar khilji ua-cam.com/video/SOqxk_ZRmus/v-deo.html
But those were just a fraction of all the books there.
When Islam invades ,it destroys knowledge because Knowledge gives thought, Thought makes you question, Questions create disobedience to Rulers and Allah. so it destroys everything that develops knowledge and education.
Very true

It's sad to see some fanatics kings and generals throughout history destroyed the library and institutions such as Nalanda, Alexandria, Baghdad etc.
It's really saddening.
I'm a Muslim and I acknowledge what was done to the educational institutions and library was really terrible and such terrible incidents were done by various other kings too in middle east, India, Egypt, Roman Empire etc.
That is why Arab countries in middle is burning to ground and generations after generation are targets of proxy wars....karma catches everyone
Bhaktiyar khilji wanted the kafirs to study only the Quran and nothing else and that is why he destroyed the university and massacred the monks and gurus there.
Legend has it that one of the monks even treated Khilji through his illness but even so or maybe cuz of ego he ordered the destruction.
What an amazing story! I would love to visit one day. Thank you for sharing.
Miracle of the followers of one book.spreading peace since ancient times

Bakhtiar Khilji also destroyed Vikram shila University, Bhagalpur.- 15 km from my native place.
@Pierre In ok
I have been there a few years back. This place captured my mind like nothing before. When I was walking by the graveyard of the adhyapakas and panditas ( professors) , I felt like I too am a disciple of that great monastic university . I could realize the true meaning of Buddhism , what are the teachings of Ashtangika Marga ( eight folded path) , I realized the magnanimity of our ancestors. 🙏🙏🙏 so proud to be born to this great nation.
Its a request to the Indian government to provide the highest level of security around Nalanda University in order to protect the university from eternal illiterates. Buddhist monks should be given free access to this university with high dignity and bring back their lost dignity.
Education should be mandatory for all human beings.
As a indian i don't want revenge against anyone whether british or turks caused damage to us
Just want to reclaim my history and get lost in ur beautiful stories
Proud to born in the land of great NALANDA
6:31 it saddens me to see they're using English as a language there. This is how you will revive the glory of Nalanda ? By using English ?
Like there are people from all over India. This University isn't in Gupta Empire Period it it in 2022
English will be one of many other languages.
This site is studied by archaeology students and professors worldwide and ma south indians don't know hindi
Not all people understands Hindi
Any problem English is now a global language with indigenous accents.
