- We barely got off in time for this one due to airport closures related to Hurricane/TS Ida which flooded and closed every GA airport in the area. While the weather down was decent, I encountered some ATC errors on approach in to Smyrna, TN while under the care of a trainee. We are all allowed to make mistakes, especially while training.

Ha! I wish I could say that our set list was open to suggestions, but TBH it is very hard just to get the hit Eagle songs done in 2x one hour sets. Occasionally we through stuff in but it is rare. Thanks for reaching out.

Excellent video as always Jon. Really like the explanation of when you're expected to do a course reversal and why it's important to speak up sometimes just to be sure. Too many pilots just "assume" what ATC wants and then get mad when ATC does something else or queries why they did something without being expressly cleared to do so. Controllers are human too, so they make mistakes just as much. Simply communicating when you have a question or doubt solves so many things. It also tells ATC you're on the ball and they might come up with something easier for both of you to get where you're going smoother.

Just discovered your channel. Really like the approach you have taken with the inclusion of your weather decisions based on available weather products. As a fellow IFR pilot, I find it refreshing to have another pilot’s perspective when it comes to dealing with the weather.

Jon, of course I enjoyed the flight...but the tour of Blackbird was amazing! The Neve 8078 looks like the one I worked on at A&R (NYC) in the 80's and early 90's. Being "surrounded" by all those ATC speakers must be breathtaking!
As to the controller mistakes: you made it obvious how important it is for a pilot to know what to expect and to be "ahead of the airplane." Always ask yourself, "What's next?"

Michael - Thank you! Yes... Blackbird is truly amazing. I could have done a whole half hour segment on its 9 studios. That 8078 belonged to Donald Fagin BTW. I've recorded at Abbey Road and Capitol and Electric Lady and can tell you that NOTHING compares to the collection of vintage gear that he has amassed.
And yes, I've been always trained to anticipate everything three steps ahead. "What's next, what's next, what's next" is a mantra. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for reaching out.

Fantastic as always. I look forward to your updates. I’d like to see more views out the windshield or side window, being from the area I like spotting landmarks and local aircraft. In the course of your flight you explain things in a clear way from preflight planning, weather, dealing with ATC and changes you make to your flight. This is all very helpful and educational, I’d like to see this continue. Perhaps a tour of the Piper and of course anything rv8!
