  • Eaglemania plays a big outdoor event in Roanoke, VA in May of 2021. Getting there was relatively easy, but getting home required some strategery, Come sit in the right seat while I demonstrate how I use Nexrad, the onboard Garmin GWX-68 radar, and stormscope to navigate around convective weather. And avoiding the weather wasn't limited to the flyying, but the show must go on!

    Another great video Jon. Really appreciate the attention to detail and your explanation of the how and why of things like the use of radar and your personal limits on cloud penetration. Looking forward to the next video!

    The airport you landed at (I assume your "home base") is the same airport I took a ride to/from this summer. My wife's family rented a house in Corolla and my two sons and I took an OBX Airplanes tour of Roanoke Island. We all really enjoyed it. That airport and the sights around it are amazing. Thanks for the video.

    Excellent video on weather flying. Happy to see you mention the value of a StormScope in your flying. As someone who flies a non-radar equipped plane, the StormScope has become a valuable tool to help make sense of what I am seeing on a weather delayed SiriusXM radar view and what the StormScope says is out there.

    • @lifeinthefl94
      @lifeinthefl94  Рік тому

      Im glad you noticed that. I don't use the stormscope as much as I would like and thats probably because I am least comfortable with it compared to Nexrad and radar. Thanks for reaching out and I am glad you are enjoying them!

    What’s the purpose of the clear shield in front of the drums?

    • @lifeinthefl94
      @lifeinthefl94  2 роки тому

      Thank you!! The shield keeps the drum sounds from overwhelming the many vocal mics that we have lined up at the front of the stage. Without it, it becomes very difficult to mix the band properly.

    1. I did not realize you are an MD. Is there a vlog about that journey? That seems like it would be an interesting story- med school, flight training, drums. That’s a great mix of skills.
    2. I flew my family from the Chicago area to Manteo in a Bonanza in 2015. It was fantastic! But I didn’t get the services from a control tower at Manteo. When did that occur? I see no mention of it in the A/FD.

    • @lifeinthefl94
      @lifeinthefl94  2 роки тому +1

      Rocky - Thank you! No vlog about the MD journey... I'm already 20y out of training, so that story is stale ;-). Manteo keeps their tower active over the summer. Not sure if it was even there in 2015. Glad you like the channel and thanks for reaching out.

    Jon, Didn't quite follow your radar procedure while in cruise...you get the ground returns on top 1/3 of display (to identify ground), and then from that tilt setting, you adjust tilt up another 1 degree per 10,000' ? So, if you are at 0.5 degrees with ground return, and at flight level 280, you will add 3 degrees and set radar tilt at 3.5 degrees ? Like you said, radar use is a real art best learned with a highly experienced radar mentor to show the way.... Enjoy your content, it's extremely well done. Regards from a fellow Single turbine pilot (TBM).

    • @lifeinthefl94
      @lifeinthefl94  2 роки тому

      Alan - exactly. Usually, the ground comes in at around -1 to -1.5 degrees tilt, and I end up scanning in the 2-2.5 degree tilt up. This enables me to scan (while at FL280 or FL300) from about 10,000' upwards, as this is where the cells that I worry about are. If you do the math using simple trigonometry using a 30,000' altitude, 40nm x 6000'ft/nm, and a 10deg beam width, I think you will find that my rule works out pretty well. It is an exercise worth doing to convince yourself. Thanks for reaching out.

    How many hours did you have until you got comfortable with the Meridian?

    • @lifeinthefl94
      @lifeinthefl94  Рік тому

      I had about 1800h TT when I bought it and felt very confident in it after about 200h. Its not the airplane - it was the situations that the airplane can get you into that was biggest adjustment.

    These WX briefings is exactly what I want to understand and master as a 20 hr student pilot.... What were some keys to learning WX like this??

    • @lifeinthefl94
      @lifeinthefl94  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Great question. I believe that it doesn't have to be as complicated as they make it seem. You do not need to be a meteorologist to be a safe pilot these days, given what is out there. If you follow my briefing regimen (which is the same no matter how far or how big or small the plane I am flying) that should be good. Just know yourself and set your own limits, and above all as you progress through your flying experience, know your airplane and what it is capable of and, more importantly, what it isn't.
