I will by no means defend overweight cops, but it's generally complacency. Work for a small town, generally you know most of the people you interact with, so you don't expect to see much trouble. Of course though, you don't know what your day will consist of.

I mean it would be beneficial for all police to be fit as fiddles, but I'd say decision making, people skills and even reflexes are more important in terms of picking good candidates. When you are really about that life you are just waiting for when your lucky runs out. It not about if but when. Also, you get desynthized to shit.
