MAKING A CHANGE TO MY SYSTEM?

  • I am not usually someone who jumps from planner to planner. That actually makes me anxious - I thrive on routine and keeping things predictable. But sometimes you may need to make a change… and I’ve found that when you need a change it can be really easy to succumb to the new hotness in the community. I actually am in this situation right now and thought it would be helpful to you all to chat about how I recognized this situation and made changes.

Getting off planner instagram was a huge help in getting me to really evaluate what works for me instead of what everyone else is using. It took many purchases over like 2 years to realize I am just not a 7x9 Vertical layout person. Horizontal, A5 seems to be my sweet spot. And it works for me! I love opening my planner and checking things off.

This is kind of why I keep around my stack of planner "exemplars." If I'm feeling the itch to jump (like, "Hey, maybe Happy Planner will work for me THIS time?"), I will pull out one and mess around with setting up a layout, and usually it either scratches the itch and I go back to what I was doing, or I actually do decide to move into a new planner.

I am a "paper" planner person. I have a Weeks to carry around with me, I lost it for a week and had a total meltdown and that is a key to what works for me. I used a Planner Pad for years at work and finally decided this is the home planner and then put notes in my Weeks and problems solved. All appts are made in my weeks and if I accidently, forget to put in home planner not an issue, as it seems like double work but this is what finally works for me. Thanks for the lesson on planners and changes we need to work it out and I found a system that works for me........Bless you for your insights and sharing. P.S. finally realized I do not like decorations or anything just notes and scribbles.

Thanks. I needed this video today. I want through the “buy all the things” stage right after lockdown, mainly because I found the planner community during lockdown, and once everything opened again and I could touch “all the things”, I thought I needed all the things. Then I found you and your consumerism videos and “no buys” and the “ball dropped “ so to say. Yes I am in a no buy year for “ all thing stationery “ and it has helped. I loved your statement about how my life circumstances change and then so does my planning. My mom died in November 2022: my life has changed drastically. I was her caregiver for the last 7 or so years and especially so since my dad died a little over 3 years ago. My planner has so much empty space now. I have so little to do being home every day, it is hard to motivate myself to do anything let alone open my planner. Anyway, thanks. I now have so food for thought and I much appreciate it.☺️

That hypothetical new job situation you mentioned is LITERALLY happening to me right now. I ordered an April-start Cousin for my big new government contractor job that will be project focused instead of task-list focused like my current part time gig that fits nicely in a Weeks. And I splurged on a cover so I could secure it shut and protect any sensitive info I have in there.

I have been in 3 planners this year. I really wanted a daily with hourly timelines. I work retail and work a different schedule and sometimes late schedule. I kept looking at the hobo cousin and finally gave in. It has been perfect. I have switched things a couple of times, but found my rhythm. I use weeklies for planning and my daily for journaling and record keeping.

I've recently realized that my work planner that has been perfect for three years, doesn't work at all with my new position and I find myself rarely reaching for it. But I do still need a planner to keep track of things! So I think I'm going to go back through your planner reviews and see if something looks like it will work for my current needs (2 months in, I feel like I have a decent grasp of what I'll need); plus I can look at all the planners I skipped because they were Monday starts! I went with the Weeks because it is basically the same layout I was making in my bujo every week already, but in a smaller package. Also tend to go through journals pretty quickly, so having one Weeks that will last me all year saves me from having to do a lot of repetitive set-up work every few months. This is my second year and it's still working for me.

    Your hair looks beautiful.
Last summer, I realized my system where I kept my home planner at home and used a b6 notebook to sort of ferry notes between work and home was not working. I also noticed I had too much room even when I drew a week on one A5 side AND that I was getting tired of drawing bujo boxes. So I purchased pre-printed inserts to fit the notebook (reasons I love discbound) - one week on two pages, horizontal with equal space for Saturday and Sunday. I also started using stickers just because the pre-printed pages were dull and needed color. All functional - boxes, to do stickers, day and date and lately Hebrew dates and reminders - but also colorful. There isn't space for anything but functional, but enough for events, to do lists, meal planning and maybe shopping lists.
Plus, it's still a notebook. It's half dot grid inserts and I can use it for longer lists and other sorts of planning or pre-planning. Just like a Weeks, but in really thick paper. Best of both worlds. (Appointments/future planning are all on google calendar, and transferred a month at a time.) Thus far, it's working for me.

Absolutely yes for the downloadable-printable content offered or sold by many planner companies, it's so confortable to be able to try certain systems for a few weeks before deciding to invest (I did that for the Hero's Journal as my goal planner, and it worked beautifuly). As for my planning system, I use blank notebooks and draw my ideal planner myself in them (bujo style, but not with the bujo system, because I need an extremely structured organisation), which means I can implement little or drastic changes in my system progressively, particularly when I see something that seems to correspond to my needs in a content creator's video, like in your videos.
You, Cindy, inspired a LOT of life-saving changes with your content, as I'm also chronically ill and you solved a lot of problems in terms of life-health-work balance for me. I also saw a video by Rachel in theory where she explained that when she wants to change her planner system, she takes a blank notebook and draws the exact structure of the new one she wants to try, and uses that for a few weeks before buying it to make sure it will fill her current needs.
Thank you so, so much for those exploration videos, where you explain your thought process, it helps tremendously.

I felt lost with my planner last year. I wanted something that isn't out there - A5 daily, good paper, disc punched, no shading, the ability to change up the layout. Until I found what I wanted, I purchased A5 dot grid, 160 gsm, loose unpunched paper from Amazon. I punched it for discs. I thought I would just use it until I found something that fit my needs. Well, it has been over a year and I'm still using the loose paper from Amazon and it's working for me. I can use stickers or not. I can use really inking pens or not. I can use it as a daily or weekly or monthly. It's whatever I need it to be. I do purchase a monthly Eric Condren planner in January, for budget planning; but that's it. :)

I was going through exactly the same this year. I am now in my 3rd system which is making everything digital and in Notion. Like you, I had used it before but now really giving it a better try for everything in my second brain, journaling and planning. I get 2 hour infusions every 6 weeks because of rheumatoid arthritis so I can relate to trying to get things done one handed. I also don’t have a dedicated home office and badly damaged hands from the RA so lugging my chunky paper planner became cumbersome. so Notion definitely helps with all those issues I was having. I also like that I can set properties and decide once what/when something needs to be done and then on that day, Notion tells me what to do. I don’t have to plan as much every day, I can just start doing. I will check out jules’ business templates. I love her videos too and am a blogger for a side hustle. Hope you are feeling well!

I'm usually questioning if I am really content with my planner situation and I do sometimes switch to something new midway through the year. I'm usually using a BuJo because I can customize my pages to suit whatever I need. However, in 2020 and 2021 I fell down the consumerism/happy planner rabbit hole and bought all the things. But only ended up using it for 6-8 months, so this past summer when I heard about Cindy's project stashdown I pulled out the tote holding all the happy planner stuff and put together a planner. I started it in June and I'm still in it. I am customizing it to suit what I need and didn't buy anything except new metal expander rings this year. I'm still tweaking my process and my system. But I've managed to embrace the idea of being able to make this planner "my system" so that it serves me. And I'm pretty happy with myself for not buying a new planner in January, we have some big expenses coming up this year and we really need to save money.

Cindy, what about when *nothing* clicks?
I was 'on planner' for YEARS. I tried lots of planners and the Happy Planner classic vertical seemed to work the best for me, especially since I could add 'stuff' to it with the help of my HP punch. I managed all the family stuff and schedules for the four of us plus check ins with aging parents and meal plans and all of that. I wrote and published and marketed novels and went to author events and conferences and scheduled freelance editing for $$. I planned and sketched out quilts (and designed, created, and sold a few patterns for them. I vented. I wrote reminders, notes, and brain dumps. I decorated pages and doodled and used washi. I had an HP planner for this, and a planner for that, and an HP mini dot-grid notebook in my purse... And on and on and on. Then, roughly the time Covid hit, it all collapsed.
I quit writing, creating, quilting, planning... All of it. I can blame some on menopause, some on the batshit insanity of politics then (not that it's slowed down much), some on Covid isolation and such, but DAMN. I cannot seem to get my 'planner groove' back. My marriage is fine, my family is fine, but I am an endless hot mess because I react to everything that comes flying at me, but plan nothing ahead of time no matter what planner I try beyond a wall calendar to keep the family stuff on so I don't forget a band concert of whatever. I have no schedule or goals or any thing to cross off my list, and I don't know what to *do*.

    • @annec8127

I'm no psychologist, but it sounds like you are recovering. Give yourself a break and rest, read, take walks, things that don't require planning. For the things that do require planning, get help, delegate. I think you probably have that nailed down, as you mention your family and marriage are fine (the ones who usually most suffer from a breakdown of planning).
Usually, when we have replenished, the desire comes back.
I am having similar issues, but it's my spouse and my job that are sapping my energy, so I'm working on how to take breaks and not feel guilty. We are also hiring a house cleaner, because that is my #1 reason for anxiety right now (aside from the aforementioned job and spouse). I figure baby steps are the right way to go!

    • @katv1195
      @katv1195 Рік тому

Try giving yourself room to recover with some light planning.
just scrawling down your personal to dos as they occur to you on a notepad. Grab some highlighters and colour the ones are related (E.g. you have to be out of the house to do them) all the same colour.
Then consider timeblocking your week in the style of school classes. Tuesday morning I'll do the pink tasks at the store, Wednesday afternoon the green ones, etc.
Then the reactive stuff can go on the notepad list and timed for that colour (or do this all on your phone)
      It's low stress and simple
P.S. I think perhaps you didn't need to plan everything you were planning and some of it had been taken over by the people you were helping. So your planning can be much simpler

After flip flopping from planner to planner (and spending more then I care to admit) I settled on a Weeks for life and Cousin for work. The system just works for me. Last year was actually the first year I can remember that I actually completed a planner from start to finish. I think if i would have know what kinds of pens to use in a Hobonichi the first time I tried one, I would have landed on a Weeks much earlier on. Instead, everyone and their mother was talking about 160gsm paper and how wonderful it was, yet the layouts were terrible for what I needed. So, lesson learned. If they layout works, find the tools to make the paper work as well.

I am 100% experiencing this right now as well! I started the year in three bullet journals (one with my yearly/important/long-term spreads, one with my short-term/throw away spreads, and then a seperate bujo for my studies), and the A5 take a note planner as a journal. Then in February I realised that this setup wasn't working for me with with how much I needed to carry when I'm at college, so I went digital.
I'm now realising that I just don't relate to digital (though I'll keep using it for my studies, so I don't have to carry extra folders for all of the paperwork I get), so I'm now trying to figure out a system that will work for me. Most of my bujo experience has been only using one bujo at a time, but I go through new bujos SO QUICKLY, and have over 50 pages of stuff I need to add in JUST setting up a new one, that a single bujo setup also doesn't work for me!
Then add in my health struggles (which can affect my ability to setup pages when I need them), and the fact that predesigned planners are just too rigid and so don't work for me, and I feel like I'm living in a planner hellscape!

I looked at the H&O, but the extra monthly goals and stuff just scratches on my brain... and I am not really happy with the paper. I loved the Weeks, but I outgrew that.
So I stay with the Cousin and I try to make it work and not loose my mind when I can't use all the space on a page...

LOL, I jumped into the Hobonichi pool several years ago with the Weeks, which only lasted me about 3 months. I didn't like the restriction of the teeny little daily blocks for each 7 days. Before that, I had been using a pretty Ryder-like Bullet Journal in an A5 notebook. My older sister's medical situation had gotten more complicated and I was not just her transportation to assorted appointments, but needed to help her remember to take an array of meds each day, run errands, etc.
Today is her birthday. She would have been 89. So it's interesting that this topic came up today, because my period of trying stuff out came right after her passing in December 2017. First came the Weeks, see above. Then a few trials of more scaled-back bullet journaling in assorted a6's. Finally I figured out that I wanted someone else to draw the d**n monthly calendars for me and that I had way too much stuff in my habit tracker. And that I hated copying some lists over from year to year. I had already split off my personal journaling into a separate, larger notebook. So that's how I ended up with the ideal setup for me, that I've been using since 2020: an A6 Hobonichi Day-Free, which has the monthly calendars I crave and 171 numbered, gridded pages. That, plus a plain gridded A6 to contain random lists and project notes, and the A5 personal journal.
    For now.

I was using the Jibun Techo weekly and the JT Days for my thesis planning for uni, and a weeks for EDC. This year I decided to try the cousin, because it is one book. I wanted a lighter planner than the passion planner I was using, because of a shoulder injury, and my backpack was too heavy. I even bought a smaller laptop than I was used to for all this to take to Uni, ditched text books and paper. I am happy with my system now. However, once I am unemployed what will happen, being an American in Denmark, and older on a country where you put your birthdate on your resume, I do not think I will be able to find a job easily. So maybe the cousin will be too much for me then.

I think I need to prioritize my needs better. I want a book that is archivable but I need the function of one day having a 3 item list to do and one day having a 30 item list, all while being able to see my schedule for the week and what tasks/meetings are scheduled on that day and what is coming up later and do they have tasks I need to do... As much as I want an archivable book, I have yet to keep one of my past ones so why am I making it so important a need? I'm currently printing some inserts to try disks again for the flexibility. At least I already have all the things from the last time this happened, lol, and I bought all the things.

It’s funny because I found and used Hobonichi for several years even hosting large bulk order purchases for a dozen or so people and coordinating it all. But realized that none of the Hobonichi planners are a right fit for me. I’ve tried occasional since to make it work but I know it’s not right and so I’m not tempted to buy a cousin or weeks or Techo. I did actually buy 1 Hobonichi thing last week - the a6 weekly which is for a specific purpose and an add on to my wellness bujo/commonplace notebook for habit tracking. And I’m excited to try it but that’s it and I have no desire for the others.
I’m actually using a cousin right now while I wait for my new planner to come (recent job change means my planner I’m using for work isn’t the right fit anymore 😢 super sad because I love it so much but it’s not working for me and it must do it’s job) so while I wait for my new planner to arrive I’m using an old cousin from a prior year because it’s similar but I don’t like it. I mean I’m making it work but it’s not a happy place. But functionally it’s better than my existing planner so I’m making do and counting down the couple of weeks until my new planner arrives.
I’m not a planner hopping person. Partly because that makes me scattered and unorganized and partly because I tend to know what I need and want. But I am a firm believer you should change systems when yours isn’t working for you because it’s doing no one any good if it’s not doing it’s job in helping you do all your jobs as a mom, wife, coworker, employee etc.

I finally figured out two things. 1- I can't do anything smaller than 5mm grids or dots. 2- It was the weekly layout of the weeks that I enjoyed. It took me about a year and a half to realize those were my two biggest factors. I have wasted so much money on things that didn't work.
