OH. MY. GOODNESS. March 27, 2000. I'm in NYC with my parents for my 16th birthday. My dad got us into the Iridium where Les Paul was playing every Monday evening. As we took our seat at a table, my mom nudges me and points across the room and says "hey that guy has hair like Keith Richards". That man shuffled his way in and sat at the table next to us. It was indeed Keith Richards. At some point in the night I managed to build up the courage to ask him for an autograph. What a night. Thank you for posting this foundational memory of mine!!
Kieth Richards is one of my favorites guitarist. It's not how many notes can be crammed into a measure, it's the spaces between and the right notes at the right time. The Stones library of songs speak for themselves.
Always love to see Keith Richards play,I'm always fascinated and in awe every time I see him play,he's the coolest guitar player ever!!Keith is a musical genius.

I have to turn off these days when I hear shredding. The triumph of technique over feeling. It's like those artists who can produce hyper realistic paintings. You wonder how they do it, but the results don't move you like a few pencil lines by Picasso for instance.
Les Paul and his son came to my recording studio and bought an Ampex 16 track 2 inch tape recorder I was selling. He was there for about 2.5 hours just talking and telling stories. What a great guy.. He didn't play as he had just had hand surgery. He did sign a Les Paul guitar we had. Took lots of pictures.
For younger generations who think Les Paul was basically a decent guitarist but known for making Les Paul guitars; In 2011, he was named the eighteenth greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
Les could out play Keith easily in his prime. Keith is more about making it look good then playing that great, he came up with some great licks but Stones like many other big groups 'borrowed' lots of ideas and talent. Was nice to see them together, thx for posting.
He's (Les Paul) responsible for, in some way electric guitar and every pedal or effect you can think of. He even had some kind of loop device. Without Les Paul, there'd only be clean tone and pick-up switches to change the sound.
Those lists are subjective to who's voting and why I don't like them. No doubt every great who ever played an electric guitar would not have been able to do that if not for Les Paul. Les was not only a masterful guitarist (of many genres including jazz) but an inventor who brought the idea of sound and sound, multitrack recording and special effects and effects pedals. Without Les, the players who followed wouldn't had benefitted by his inventiveness or what would be possible with an electric guitar. Top 5 are newer players and obviously virtuosos like Django Reinhart are no where to be found. They are Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Clapton and Hendrix at #1. Well deserving, but it's opinion at best. Shocked to see Prince rated so low at 33 as he is / was a cameleon changing shades of color on his ax, perhaps more than Jimi.
The Stones took the blues and made something new out of it... without Keith it wouldn't have been possible. But without Les Paul, there wouldn't have been Stones at all....Thanks a lot for this cool video.
It was Brian Jones, the original Rolling Stone who formed the group, Ian Stewart being the 2nd band member, who remained deeply entrenched in the blues. He wanted the Stones to remain blues oriented when Jagger & Richards started writing songs such as Ruby Tuesday & Let's Spend The Night Together etc.
No they didn't. Paul McCartney called them a blues cover band. I like the stones but they still owe their careers to Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf etc.

I got a lot more respect for Keith's guitar playing after watching this. He has this way of presenting himself as being off the wall but you can tell he knows his instrument well and he listens to the musicians around him. Very entertaining.
I have seen a number of other musicians playing live with Les Paul with varying degrees of musicianship. You can tell by Les Paul's reaction the ones he truly enjoys playing with and the ones he sort of humours. It is very evident he had a kick playing with Keith and they complimented each other in their playing. Probably the best one that Les Paul really enjoyed was with the Canadian Jeff Healey who was a real jazz aficianado. I think he was playing his trumpet and singing in that one. I didn't really follow the Stones to any degree but like many of their songs. Keith is more of a feel player than a virtuoso and there is nothing wrong with that!!!! Mick sort of became a caricature of himself and they became a bit repetitive and formula driven with their later albums in my opinion. Writing songs that are classics is not easy and they had their share of them. Sometimes the well just goes dry but you should always strive to create from an artistic place instead of a commercial one and magical things will happen I think.
Les came off as a little odd and aloof sometimes, it's great to see him here just a smart-ass musician, of the breed. Him and Keith, worlds apart in a way, obviously understand each other perfectly. Wonderful stuff.

Exactly right..and IMO that right there is the difference in a pro and not a pro...
I remember hearing how Les shattered his right elbow and had it set at an angle so that he would be able to play guitar.
