Alec Steele first comment!
Alec Steele no I don’t think I will love ur vids tho
Aww doggo
The footmouse gag was incredible
I really wanted a foot mouse TwT
If there is an actual paint color that is close to dykem blue, i feel like that is the only appropriate color at this point
Ford Racing Blue is pretty close.
@@mikeford963 that would look so good
you're all wrong, British racing green is the way to go
Also Tesla blue
@@BH-rx3ue For the British sure. But Ford Racing Blue is one the straight up "American" colours.
When you're more interested in the foot mouse rather than the Raid ad
Same😂
same lol
Thing is, the first time i saw the new raid ad on a different channel, I juts thought was a troll, but seeing it across different channels just makes it weird...
wait a minute, Brendan Herrera?
Daniel M yessir
Paint: British racing green of course. Unless you want to go bold and go bright yellow or red:P
Glad I'm not the only one liking the British racing green color 🤣
Manny Freeesh don’t like standard BRG. Although I like the knew jaguar version, of British racing green, which is a metallic. Looks really nice
@@damedusa5107I completely forgot about Jaguar's version.. The metallic flakes in that paint really make it pop. I can see why people don't like BRG, compared to today's technology it looks dull.
Manny Freeesh it’s not cheap tho, but is a quality finish.
Yes paint BRG!!
Looking at that valve, it wants to be resurfaced before lapping. Also: when you're lapping you want to be very cincious of how square the mating surfaces are. Lap it in whilst its being held in place with the spring and castle nut as that will be how its going to operate when it's installed.
As an apprentice i used to grind in and lap large (3ft tall x 10"wide) valves for marine engines. Long ass work. But even on components that large, concentricity amd squareness to the valve seat via the valve guide was dialled in to 0.05mm run out etc. Good luck bud !!
I came here to say similar. I don't have your experience, but I remember from 3 years of Auto Mechanics class in high school how important lapping is. Since this doesn't have a valve guide to speak of, I think one could make a quick slip-on guide with that big piece of DELRIN rod using the lathe.
Then I'd probably grease the valve stem and DELRIN, and make a "flat head screwdriver" (but much wider) out of DELRIN and turn it with a drill.
Keep in mind that testing a seal with a 1/4" column of water is not very conclusive. The test pressure should be at least the operating pressure of the air cushion.
As for the color, purple with big green poker dot... why not!
It'd be worth testing it with white spirit after lapping. Much thinner so it'll flow through much smaller gaps. Water has a lot of surface tension so tends to hold itself better
You guys beat me to it, other than to add that in the video its hard to get a good idea how well the guide fits the valve. If theres any play in the guide the valve wont sit flush and can leak. After having thunk on this a bit, im wondering why this isnt a spring loaded check ball. Would get rid of the valve seat and guide all together and be much less likely to leak.
Doxnoogle - i agree that a check ball would be much better ! Maybe its down to material costs or spaxe withun the chamber whilst the valve is shut they didnt go with it ? Even so, a radiused sealing face vs a straight chamfer would be a much more reliable seal ! I cant see how the state of the valve's surface atm would be any good at sealing with all the pitting etc xD hopefully Alec catches this thread and does the right thing !
Alec, you should paint this power hammer on "British racing green" 😏
i was going to suggest the same
I'm French, and yet I totally agree! :)
Yes!
Keep the smiley face and call it the "Jolly Green Giant"
with jaguar logo
Since it's from the 40s era, paint one of those pinups like they used to do on the nose of bombers in WW2
This too!
Plumb Crazy Purple and Nose Art!
Army green and a bit of pin art would be awesome.
@@TheSqueeker101 C A N C O N F I R M
But it needs to be a pinup of Will
The sheer size of the hammer. Along with the hanmer's mega old school industrial look. Makes me oddly wish it had a steam punckish look to it. Copper or bronze connectors, lines, subassemblies, and switches on a dark body color. It would make it stand out and make it just look so much more bigger. It will draw attention to the hammer and all the old school controls.
This was an awesome series. Having worked on large industrial machines in a past life, I love this stuff.
Yes, for the love of god, paint that bad boy.
British Racing Green would be a great color. And a nice tribute to old Mr. Pilkington.
Love that idea, I love darker green on big tools
I second this
I do like that idea for a color although anything is better than that sad look it has now.
Lotus green indeed!
Thirded, definitely a really nice Dark Green.
The shop needs an *official* Alec Steele machine paint color. Whatever it is, all your machines should be painted that color.
Ohhh I like this, but it is potentially a ton of work! I really like the finish on the Anyang stuff, maybe just paint it to match?
Alec is proud to be in America, so I vote for Red white and blue!
100% blue dykem blue
Mr. Pilkington Green
Zerostar369 naaaaa the Rough Look in the older machines is cool
Nice job on that "lapping"! We use to do that on the heads of cars with a special grinder made for it. Came in a toolbox made for it. Love that you share your machine repairs!
You are a Champion Alec, keep safe buds!
Pneumatics get messy sometimes, especially for actuation equipment...
Remember to keep those tool lines dry, and oil the tools... routine maintenance it as important as repair, it's good cost saving measure too... that paste could have saved a mint in the patch
If you had to adjust the timing because the valve was leaking, wouldn’t you need to adjust it back once the valve is fixed?
I don't think so because the performance improved after he adjusted it and it doesn't appear to have lost any. If you pause at 7:40 and look directly left of this thumb to me it looks like the valve itself has some pitting that would prevent it from having a good seal on the seat
@@435now That's only a problem if the pitting goes all the way across the mated area...
@@435now that was the whole reason that he did the diamond lapping which after lapping you see he had 100% contact which means that that reasoning goes out the window because that was repaired. I agree with the Readjustment of the piston valve back to its original position. If the check valve was not functioning correctly Under Pressure it would be leaking air as the Piston was Rising thereby inhibiting a proper air cushion because an air cushion is relative to pressure. So when he made that to the piston valve adjustment maybe it was forcing more air into topside the Piston area which alleviated the problem because there was more air up there acting as a cushion that the check valve was supposed to be providing. Now that he fixed the check valve and its seat, that adjustment to the piston valve May inhibit performance for the opposite reason and now the check valve is not getting enough pressure to give a proper air cushion. Not to mention that since lapping, Minor Adjustments might be needed in the first place just like when you lapp components in a regular engine. If you made an adjustment and then found another serious problem. You fix the serious problem and put the original adjustment back into its original state so that you can be sure that the major adjustment may not have been the entire problem; then adjust accordingly. If he puts it back to its original position and it is still knocking the top and that means that he either needs to make very minor adjustments to the timing, or that it something else. But to fix a major issue; and then leave is significant adjustment in the timing that may not have needed to be made in the first place, wouldn't make much sense.
"You can have it any color you want, as long as it's black". Henry Ford
What about black with a red evil deamon face, because this machine is a monster and the other powerhamer got a face to. So it would be the evil big brother 😈😈
Bright pink
Oh I like that. I'm not biased at all though.
You may need to readjust the “timing” on the machine. Any time you lap engine exhaust and intake valves on an engine you also have to make fine adjustments to the timing. So the at turnbuckle you installed might actually come in handy. Also I think a nice coat of basic black would be appropriate, or go full Damascus pattern vinyl wrap?
I love cleaning old mechanical parts. I was cleaning my late grandad’s old hunting rifle and I felt like the bolt was sticking more than it should on the opening. Sure enough I took it out and it looked like the bolt hadn’t been taken apart since he died 20 years ago. I cleaned it up and it was so beautiful how smooth it moved.
Paint it in its original color, I think it would be good if it looks like from the Factory or just very well treated.
Agree. Full restore project. And a video series obviously 😃
Guys, it looks sick as it is. I don't understand why you want to make it like every other power hammer. THIS HAS SO MUCH CHARACTER!
Paint it black
I agree. I don't personally don't like big machinery that looks really old and run-down. I think a good coat of bluish-gray paint would do wonders for the appearance.
That's what I was thinking, a nice gloss black
Let Mr. Pilkington's memory live on through its colour, paint iiit
i think going to get compound would be an essential trip. good you had something else that worked. timing is everything
Hammerite green. Just about the best looking paint for machinery there is.
To quote a famous Brit, "I want it painted black."
Dang! you beat me to put this comment. Do it, Alec! paint it black!
I think he should definitely keep the fellow face on it
Black paint but keep the yellow face on it!
And maybe add some yellow details on it, paint it so it looks mean 👌🏻😈😈
yeah but that was a door
Paint job:
Remove the old paint, polish it and put on a transparent coat. ...It will look awesome, like the Terminator ))!
Agree!
Can you imagine trying to get an even shine on that puppy, you guys like that idea, go down and help him...LOL
That with some classy pinstripes
Shiny :D
M8 how about plum crazy purple
I would love to see it back to its original color. Great video and great job.
Love the channel, your positive attitude is so appealing I can watch this and my wife and daughters do not ask me to switch it off. No expert in machining, but I think the next step is replacing the valve spring (as recommended below). Also Dykem Blue or for the paint color (as recommended below) would be very 'you'. Restore the hammer, it deserves respect.
The spring in that check valve could potentially be tired and too soft
it aint the only thing that's tired and soft during this quarantine
what this guy said, the spring is no doubt fatigued from age.
@@ericbarrows6606 LOL
It prob not strong enough to seat it as the hammer comes back up letting air back out. Kinda like when you add lots if horse power to diesel engine, the valves float not seating fully before the compression stroke.
Yes, try shimming the spring?
Paint job: strip it and protect it, leave a metal finish. Alternatively, a glossy royal blue or black with some pinstripes would be absolutely killer.
Hear, hear! Pinstripes indeed.
Since Alec is an American now, maybe a traditional Mustang paint job? Royal blue with white racing stripes? Not sure where you'd put them....
Blue! Royal Blue if it is a match to the exact color of Blue Dykem
@@kevinnaranek6649 I'm a Leafs fan so i'm bias but I vote Royal blue as well.
Chrome...everything is better chromed!
Sounds pretty high speed if you ask me... and I dig it.
Thank you for a great examination of the operating principles and mechanics. Fixing that connecting rod properly with a factory length threaded connecting rod is a great start. Then, finding a limit of travel for the foot treadle and creating a stop to prevent a hit if the rod replacement failed to solve 'hitting top' seems the best course.
Love the valve lapping job! Definitely should paint it
There is only one color for you: British Racing Green and golden Hardware Fittings. Cheers from Germany
Manuel Schubert I do like this idea!
Yep
Sounds good!
like Aston Martin Heritage Racing Green
Have to agree. It's a great colour for machinery. Cheers from Germany as well
Will: “I’m gonna make some Damascus using only hand tools.”
Alec: “power hammer go KACHUN KACHUN KACHUN clunk”
100% it needs a paint job and definitely YELLOW AND BLACK COMBINATION. Grate job with the videos, I love them!
The best color is "Industrial green" - several variations of this, but many machines in europe in early 20th century where "industrial green" (kinda faded / greyish green)
I saw another comment that also deserves some love, commission a local artist to paint it something unique.
um it is already a piece if art
Damn I just sed dont paint it but that's a good idea.
Yes you should Paint it "British Racing Green", and I must say that I love you show. You are funny, smart and brilliance at explaining stuff.
I’ll second that. British racing green is an amazing colour and pays homage to England :)
Came here to say British racing green.
I also think any Pilkington-esque colour tribute would be great !
My first thought was also British Racing Green. We are all on the same wavelength. Keep the yellow face for the perfect accent.
Yes! Definitely personalise it! Paint it all nice and new looking
I have to agree a good coat of green paint. Really make your Frankenstein feel fresh and new.
Commission a local artist to paint something original on it. I'm sure they would appreciate the work.
thats such a good idea!
this!!!
if it needs to be painted this is the best Idea!

Yes paint it OD green. Great work on it, you get it with dedication
Yes...definitely needs paint... dark green hammer tone
A second thought just occurred to me: check the rings on the piston travelling up and down. If the valve face showed the kind of pitting and wear on camera, I wonder how good/bad the rings are on the piston?
Interesting thought, definitely worth a look. That cylinder looked pretty worn, too. With how smooth it is, I wonder if it has rings or some sort of packing. Like the rings on an air of hydraulic cylinder.
If the air leaks out from the pistonrings the dampening on top is not going to work and it hits the top.
There's ya problem ;)
I wonder if there is a way that you could perform a compression test on it.
@@databoy2010 Just pour soapy water on it;)
Great video again Alec (as always)! I think you should paint the hammer with black Hammerite!
Of course, we all love to see some steel being hammered, but I really enjoy these videos too. Keep it all coming.
British Racing Green - keep them roots strong! Keep the treadle yellow though, you are from Norwich after all!
chris m agreed. Union Jack right in front of Old Glory would be bad taste.
Tart it up like an old jaguar complete with livery badges (UA-cam buttons, etc)
I was thinking the exact same!
Do you not know why British racing green is green. It is green because of the Irish 🇮🇪🇮🇪. When formula 1 first came to England ye had stupid speed laws which ment racing was illegal. So ye came over to our much superior country to race and that is how British racing green is green to honour the Irish.
"ÉIRE GAN SAOIRSE BEIDH GAN SIOCHÁIN GO DEO"
Imagine if a beast like that was painted pink
You may be onto something. If only Hammerite or Rustoleum made a hammered, metallic pink...
Aw my comment was way late. Great minds think alike though! Almost worded the same too
yes pink paint all the way
Definitely should paint it hot pink
i came to the comments to give the same opinion. the beast should be pink
Yes ! Paint IT ! Dark Red would look amazing !!!
That dark grey and the orange smiley on it is cool. i´d keep the colour but repaint it to be nice and smooth again
Judging by how easy it was for you to compress the spring by hand, I would say the spring is worn out. Tightening it more may not be enough, you may have to replace the spring. You can have a perfect seal, but the compression alone can force it open if the spring is weak.
Exactly
I agree, often you have to replace valve springs on an engine.
When the hammer is moving up the valve is forced into it’s closed position, the spring is not being compressed. I think that means the spring is not the problem.
More likely air is escaping around the ram therefore not creating a proper air cushion
Please paint it. It deserves to look so much better than that!
Go all Iron Man on the paint: Hot rod red with gold accents.
Also, is it normal for the piston to go down that quickly after powering off the hammer?
I mean if we are going to be looking at it for the years to come, better make sure its pleasing to our eyes
+1 for the ironman but with hammerite red and gold.
+2 for the iron man theme
Agreed, but I'd add to keep the yellow, angry face type of thing that's already on it.
Ummm...I mean I think the bright pink would be dope
Adding your own flavor through a cool paint job would be awesome!
The song has returned! It's been too long. Great episode, been loving the work you folks are doing.
The piston has rings on it like one in an engine, take the top back off and push the piston up with something and check the rings because a damaged ring will cause air to leak by.
Off camera I took out one of the piston rings on the ram to have a look and it looked very fine to me!
Alec Steele I would think there would be more than one ring , if not and the ring your looking at looks ok it still may be no good , piston rings have a springiness to them and if it has lost its springiness or has worn down you could be losing compression on the upstroke which is the cushion.
@@AlecSteele But if you put liquid into the piston chamber, would it leak out?
AndyFromBeaverton Leakdown test, just like you’d do on an engine.
Wait! Does it have oilscrapers and all? that is basically a piston engine then.
But where can you get new piston rings if those get damaged?
It definitely needs a sticker on it saying “engage brain” like your old power hammer had.
Our old machines have legit looking warning stickers, CAUTION: THIS MACHINE HAS NO BRAIN, USE YOURS!
And paint it hot pink
"Not to be operated by fuckwits" - or "No dumb area, do not dumb here" would also fit perfect...
Needs an AvE sticker, "DANGER: Not to be operated by fuckwits"
Perhaps some stickers from AvE would be appropriate.
Man i love the workshop looks like a heavenly place
At first I thought painting it would be nice but now that I've seen it a few times, I think a good cleanup, roughing up of the yellow and then some clear coat would be cool. Keep the history in the piece.
I don't know about everybody else but I'd love to see the exterior of the power hammer getting a clean up and a new paint job
The only viable painting options:
- Green: Pilkington shade or Hammerite Green
-Red: Hammerite
-Shark Mouth design
-Black AF
Red: Hammerite
Black
i agree
Shark mouth and it would be too awesome
Paint it silver with metal flake, so it shines like a disco ball
Royal green with a light gold flake would be awesome. Can you adjust the main valves individually of one another not at the same time as with your turn buckle arrangement. Seems the top valve needs to be closing sooner to allow the pressure to build quicker on top of the piston so that it can’t hit the top.
I would love to see the original colour back on this beast of a machine :-) Hate the finish as it is now, and please be safe working there all by yourself. I know you did in the past, but be careful none the less
alec: includes dog in video
[ Everyone liked that ]
Also at 13:32 you can see his fiance.
Puppy getting big
paint him like Mr. Pilkington
like a memorial
yes!!!!
I would have said keep it original but as a tribute to me pilkington then yea paint it
Exactly !!
Sorry but, who?
YES
If there's a leak around the ram itself it can also hit the top the oxide on the sleeve might be a sign of that as a secondary problem if this doesn't fix it as oxide cannot form without a gap and oxygen exposure.
I think it's come a long way from when you first got it! I would paint it black with yellow text. What a beast of a machine!
My money is on that spring needing replaced. It’s probably taken a set over the years.
I agree
Yupp, a spring that large seems like it should be pretty stiff, but obviously he's able to compress it with just his hands.
Only problem is finding the right spring tension. Too soft and the piston hits the cover. Too strong and the valve doesnt open and cant start sending the piston down.
The spring's purpose (if you look again at the diagram he drew), is to allow air back into the chamber on the cylinder downswing. Once on the upswing, even without a spring present the air pressure would push up on that valve and seal it. That's what he was lapping. The spring is only there so the valve isn't hanging open all the time, it only needs enough force to hold the weight of the valve and open easily enough when pressurised on the downswing. Unless the spring is so weak it doesn't even hold the valve's weight, which I don't think Alec would have missed.
I think he has to go back to adjusting his turnbuckle like in the previous video.
@@NytRydr good point.
Auto parts store would have delivered valve lapping compound too.
Bright yellow like the smiley face on it would be a joy to look at every time you walk into the shop!
Some good old valve grinding paste and there we go I’m coming in before watching how do you fixed it
I notice in when you where messing with the check valve, that it seems the spring keeping the check valve up in place was weak? IT may be over time that that spring is not as stiff as it was brand new. Just a thought, but get a new spring, or add a washer to tighten the check valve into the seat more. May be its still leaking some due to it not seating in tight enough?
o
It didn't look like it had a gasket under the little cap either. Don't think that would cause it but I feel like it should have one.
I agree. If it's not the seal leaking anymore then the next most likely is the spring
probably needs more lapping or a regrind as well
As someone who works on engines old enough to have non-camed "atmospheric" intake valves (nearly identical to this set up) There isnt alot of surface area in these valve and thus wont be pushed open my small differences in pressure between the 2 chambers if you have a really strong spring, but this one being weak is a possibility but iv seen much older and crappier springs work fine on intake valves of antique stationary engines.
I think the spring idea is a good one! It is likely that and maybe a little air/valve timing issue of when the hammer comes up and the top valve closes?
Honestly, I would rather buy footmouse than raid, but I appreciate that they give money to the youtubers that don't really get paid by youtube
no paint
the weathered effect is dope and shows its history
I bought a hydraulic press form a very nice young man who was moving to Montana. Someone suggested that I should rub it down and re paint it. I asked them to leave my forge immediately.Glad to se you doing well Alec. Loving the videos. Keep safe. Best wishes David.
I think the most interesting part of this video is that after years, we're finally seeing Alec get some facial hair.
Working on my corona beard!
@@AlecSteele still hardly noticeable😉🤘🏻
Alec, you really should get that top cover modeled up in cad so you have something to go off of if that piece breaks. On a previous video it looked like the top plate had some hairline cracks in it. Another thing to keep in mind, you did a water leak test under no pressure. Would recommend doing a pressure test, as that chamber is under immense pressures during normal operation. Can we get a thumbs up on this guys???
Can dye pen to check for cracks
Definitely paint it! A beautiful baby pink will do it fine. Or something absolutely in your face and luminous!
Keep up the good work, buddy! 🤘
yo this royalty free music bangs
This is clearly all being caused by the ghost of Mr. Pilkington haunting your new power hammer.
Also, I vote for a hot pink paintjob.
That is the first thing I thought or hot rod red 😂
I instantly thought neon hot pink to lol.
Hot pink would look great!
Brian Riddle I was thinking pink too
I agree with hot pink!
"It's not stupid if it works" - A. Steele
You are a genius. Who'd have thought about hand lapping a check valve.
The method of checking valve seating that I've learned is using a bit of prussian blue and seat the valve to see the contact.
Well, he just did what I was typing. This is the same valve that is used in engines.
Paint it the same colour the pilkington was. Bring back some memories
I have a suggestion there not enough pressure on the valve to close the valve when the hamer is going up it happen to hi power engines when there turbocharged the engine is moving so much air so fast with so much force the valve spring can close the valve fast enough and u wind up breaking valves but since the valve on the chambersburg is counter set in the top casting u wind up smacking the top try messing around with the valve spring streangth to prevent air forcing the valve open while the piston is coming up and resulting in the lack of air pressure needed to stop the ram from hitting
Another possible cause could be the ram not sealing fully against the bore and the "air cushion" is leaking past the ram allowing contact with the top cover.
Also check if the top cover is warped more that the gasket material can compensate for.
wonder if he can find a spec on the valve spring pressure. in cars it's measured by LBS/inch. John Grizzle also has a great suggestion. the seal would be a wear part.
Maybe also oil the gasket (both sides) and reinstall. However, I wouldn't expect that volume of air to make much difference. Intriguing - interested to know what it is when you fix it!
Yup check spring and if the piston has rings or gaskets those are probably due to be replaced as well.
Definitely check the piston seals!
I think you should pant it dark green, I have Recently restored and repainted a wood lathe and I love the look of dark green on machinery
Thank you
Paint it that old Industrial Green colour. It's a pretty dark colour but it looks incredible on old machinery
its a 1940's power hammer, paint it and put some nose art where the smiley face is.
That's an awesome idea!
Like the A-10 Warthog nose paint? 😬😬😬
Military green or dark blue would be perfect
@@cboody69 More like P-40 Warhawk nose paint.
Eryk w yeah, so sticking with the Warthog nose, OD Green or Aircraft Grey! 😬
Paint it in a special color like gun metal gray combined with some military green and with a glossy finish. This would look great!
As with internal combustion engines, the fit of valve stem to valve guide should be checked and correct. the valve face should be reground and the seat cut or ground and then lapped together. The hundred year old spring should be replaced as well. I don't know if there is a spring poundage recommendation but it should probably not move so easily with hand pressure.
I imagine it being as old as it is it probably had a cork gasket. I work as a millwright, and we have a lot of old pumps, and we seem to have better luck with the cork on some of the older equipment we have. Might be work a try to help get that air seal up top. You should also check that surface to make sure it’s making a good mating surface, being so old the heavier cork may help fill any void or gap at the top, that thin gasket material is usually used in modern combustion engines.
as an engine rebuilder I'm hoping to see some dirty valve-lapping action in this episode
EDIT: Alec, valve lapping is usually a process which takes *hours* by hand - I think you might have to go a bit longer - Also paint it british racing green or purple, definitely!
MomoJojo racing green - love it, I was thinking highland green would similarly look sick
British racing green is epic I was thinking about battle ship gray
PURPLE!!
Check the spring tension. If the spring is weak the valve may open slightly letting air escape.
You can use your drill by taking the wooden lapping tool are superglue and turn your drill to a slow speed and every so often pick the vale up and down from time to time.
Paint it with the Union Jack on one side and Old Glory on the other. You guys are artists, between you and Will, yall could do a really good job.
This was my first thought, but also like the idea of the old bank vaults, solid color with extravagant gold-leaf scroll work decorations...maybe combine the two ideas :D
The perfect Color would be a very masculine Pink for this power hammer.
i would *love* that but i very much doubt we'll ever see the day Alec paints his most expensive and powerful power hammer pastel pink. a girl can dream tho lol
If it’s hitting the top tighten the nut on the top more to add more resistance to the valve opening valve could be opening at too low a pressure
Yes alec you should paint it. The power need to look good like the other one, and it would be nice to paint it black with the same face it has, looks so cool
Mr pilkington green as tribute to the old reliable and solid machine you used to own
You mentioned you were considering painting it. Since it is from the 40's I immediately thought that you should paint it military green with the P-40 Warhawk 👁 and open mouth. That would look awesome.
Yess!!!!
This is the only paint scheme that would be acceptable. lol
Bump
That sounds interesting! I would prefer military grey, so it fits better in the shop but damn military green could be it!
That would be so cool
Paint it like a Spitfire and include the sharkmouth somewhere!
Also, as someone who used to grind valves for a living, you may need a machine shop set up to grind valves reprofile that valve and seat
i cant find any other comments, it looks like he chose your idea.
