Complete game, one hitter, with 15 strikeouts in Game 5 for Clemens. We may never see something like that again with the way pitchers get the short hook nowadays.

The final time NBC broadcasted major league baseball.
(And save for 95/97, it seemed like almost every other NBC playoff game of the 1995-2000 era involved the Yankees)

Or the Atlanta Braves. Remember that NBC covered the 1997 NLCS between the Braves and Florida Marlins and the 1999 NLCS between the Braves and New York Mets. This goes along with the 1995 and 1999 World Series that involved the Braves and even the 2000 All-Star Game, which took place in Atlanta. The Cleveland Indians were probably the third most frequently seen playoff team from that era.

Why did Cleveland trade David Justice again? Hit 20 HR's with CLE and they weren't even below .500 when they dealt him!
Heck, they barely missed the playoffs, so they REALLY could have have used him

2000 and 2001 Yankees are examples of the team from the waning days of the Dynasty Era that were able to get by with experience. They probably had even tougher road to the WS than even their peak at 1998 and 1999.

Like those Bulls teams of the '90s, the Yanks didn't need to be the best regular season team. They could turn it on in the post season and be great when they had to consistently. We haven't seen another team like them since.

Outside of a handful of bad innings against Cleveland in the 1997 ALDS, Joe Torre's Yankees have otherwise been money in the bank in the American League playoffs.
    They know how to win.

Twice even. Not only a measure of revenge but even surpassing the 95 ALDS. They beat them in 2000 and then again in 2001 after the Mariners had won 116 games.

An odd postseason series for the Yankees, where they were carried by a dominant Clemens in Game 3 and had to work around an El Duque clunker in G6. The inverse of how these teams usually went about it.

Following the tough series with my A's, the Yankees look vulnerable in the 2000 playoffs. Their next opponent is a more seasoned Mariners' club with more playoff experience. And in the Bronx in Game 1, A-Rod hit a home run for the M's. Freddy Garcia and three others combined on the 2-0 shutout to win it for the Mariners. Then, in Game 2, John Halama and crew kept the Yankees off the board through 7 innings and led 1-0. For the last 21 innings, the Yankees didn't touch the plate. Until the 8th inning, that is, when David Justice doubled and scored on Bernie's single. Then, the Yanks scored 6 more runs, capped by Derek Jeter's opposite field home run, as NYY won, 7-1 and headed to the Northwest all even.
Many experts feel the Yankees regained their invincibility in the 8th inning of Game 2. Joe Torre's crew won Game 3 easily, 8-2. Then in Game 4, Roger Clemens took the mound with something to prove. Did he ever with a one-hit masterpiece, two walks and 15 strikeouts. Probably the best pitched game (outside of Don Larsen in '56) in Yankees' playoff history. The 5-0 win put the Yankees one win away from another pennant. But the Mariners, who scored just 5 runs in the first 4 games, broke loose in the 5th inning of Game 5 with 5 runs. Seattle won, 6-2, to send the series back to New York.
There, the M's touched up on El Duque early and led 4-0. After the Yankees cut it to 4-3, they put two on in the 7th for Justice. Facing Arthur Rhodes, Justice--the ALCS MVP--sent a 3-and-1 offering into the upper deck in right for a three-run blast that put the Yankees ahead. They added three more in the inning. Turns out the Yanks needed those extra runs, since Seattle scored three in the 8th to cut the deficit to 9-7. But Mariano Rivera kept it that way. The Yankees won the pennant again, and to quote Bob Costas: "Start Spreading the News!! New York! New York!" With the Mets winning their NL Flag the day before, the World Series would be played entirely in the biggest city of all for the first time since 1956.

    • @chrisuncleahmad

Pettite in game 5 of the 1996 WS in Atlanta, or Clemens in game 4 in the 2000 ALCS in Seattle. Those are probably the greatest pitched games in Yankees playoff history since the Larsen perfecto
David Justice, so clutch in the postseason in his career. But the same cannot be said for Arthur Rhodes

The Yankees from 95 to 03 had a run like no other. 6 World Series, 4 wins, and ALCS appearances. Once that 04 ALCS came along and they blew that 3-0 series lead that was it for them until 2009.

Arthur Rhodes had a rough ALCS but I attribute his struggles more towards familiarity rather than him being a bad reliever. Rhodes had played most of the 90s with Baltimore so the Yankees knew how to pick him apart. As a whole, the M's bullpen really let them down in the ALCS and it would be something they'd address in a big way during the offseason, which contributed to their success in 2001.

So we have a completely new AL playoffs- no Cleveland, no Rangers, no Red Sox- and three different teams, all winning at least 90 games.
But instead of a fresh face like the White Sox/A's or the valiant post-Griffey Mariners, it's the 88-win Yankees in another World Series because basically they don't know how to lose in October.
Little stale for those wanting new blood, but they know how to win when they HAVE to
