Hey Mandalore. I just wanted to say, good work on that Dark Messiah of M&M video. That made me finally install and play it, after it was collectig dust in my Steam Library for months. Thank you.
There's a really big thing about traps that I don't believe the game ever says: Hitting agents with trap combos (ie. a wind trap that blows someone into a gas trap) will actually earn you money and is a very good secondary income source if you can ensure the agents getting caught don't escape to give you more heat.
"Most of their acts can be described as petty." Me: Oh that sounds great. "Dumping a bunch of tea in India to ruin some S.A.B.E.R. agents' days" Me: Haha that's funny. "Setting fire to Australia" Me: Oh... oh no...
'You have to kill the guy who isn't dimwitted' That's probably a really clever call back to one of the most surreal scenes in James Bond. Blofeld draws a pistol and points it at Connery muttering 'This is the price of failure Mr. Bond!' Then he shoots a RANDOM OTHER GUY DEAD
I'm remembering a much earlier example, when Blofeld had Kronsberg killed, sure Klebb definitely failed him but she was actually willing to own up to that mistake and tried to rectify that very same mistake, Kronsberg did not and in fact gave him a bunk answer ("Bond is no Match for Kronsberg")
Even with all the problems you mentioned I'm convinced, I actually wanna pick this game up. After playing Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress I'm so used to my workers not listening to me that it won't even be a problem for me.
Two years later, I shall speak in defense of Rimworld. Having played it, I can say it a lot less frustrating to get your units to do what you want. You can make units prioritize work, they do set tasks with a sense of urgency, and you can draft them for combat, giving you direct control of the units.
Ironically it's very appropriate that you find your minion's AI to be completely stupid, because that really puts you in the role of said evil genius. Just constantly sitting back while calling all of his minions imbeciles for getting themselves killed.
I remember playing this game and being able to kill off all the hero characters except that one fucking James Bond Cosplayer that kept coming back and escaping whenever I captured him. I ended up making a huge corridor full of traps with a cage at the end where every time he escaped he'd go down before he reached the end. He eventually ended up escaping faster than I could rebuild the traps and found the room where I kept all the Russian Rocket Launcher henchmen locked away so they wouldn't destroy the entire base trying to kill an escaping maid. Needless to say, the 20+(?) super soldiers unleashed a nuke on him and pretty much fucked up huge parts of the base. Good times.
14:36 you son-of-a... I've been binge watching your videos non-stop for weeks now (I love to have them as background while I work), and everytime I am starting to realize more and more the lil puns you have filled your videos with. They are so good and smooth many elude me the first time around.
The dude shoots everything in sight, and tries to blow up the power plant and other stuff with bombs. While not harmless, a good camera setup will dramatically decrease his threat level.
I used a relatively normal and I do mean completely REASONABLE laugh and maybe hammed it up just a LITTLE BIT and its perfect for evil genius work. Who'd have thought. Also I'm not a real evil genius.
The one week I haven't been watching you and Dep create a "theme park" or you running cargo and you still end up in a video I'm watching. Can't wait for the next vid man. Hail Cargonia
Even as someone who regularly reinstalls Evil Genius I feel that the criticism is valid. It can get really REALLY tedious to wait out some of the objectives and the randomization of certain gameplay elements(like whether science minions actually decide to tag something for research or not)can slow down the game to something that feels like a fullstop. Something I do wonder is whether adding an RTS element to the acts of infamy(similar to what Dungeons 2 did)could break that up a bit or would that go too far in the other direction?
Was just watching a bunch of your old stuff because I was trying to find any vids that I hadn't seen yet, and here you are with a brand new video. Love your stuff man, I love your types of videos and I just keep coming back to re-watch a lot of your videos. Keep it up!
Also, on the second island, I pause, blueprint the entire island, making sure to do the entrance traps, the strongroom, and the power room first. Once I have it all blueprinted, I unpause and let the minions go to work.
Wait, minions have a tendency to run out into the open to retrieve the possessions of their comrades during active combat scenarios? Turns out this game predated the Dwarven obsession with socks by a good few years. Also how much do I need to pay you to do a review of Dwarf Fortress?
My problem with this game is that its too easily solved. It quickly becomes obvious what you should be doing next, but it takes a long tome to actually getting it accomplished. Makes it feel like a chore rather than a challange.
Jet Chan was the perfect combination of showed up early enough (being the 2nd super agent) but being so stupidly lethal. Dirk would CHAINSAW your minions, absolutely massacring them. But by that point in the game you were usually ready to take on another murder machine having faced Jet Chan for like 80% of the game.
Early in the game, I make a point of building outdoor sheds near to the entrances, filling them with pads and distraction pop ups, and making sure there are no doors other than the ones on the sheds to attract attention. The agents are attracted to the doors, get punked, and slowly their enthusiasm fades and they go away, telling no one. It's better than killing everyone and filling the freezers. Yes, my social minions are my main army. Psychological warfare is all.
One of my all-time favourite games, despite a lot of flaws. Every time i play i realize how much waiting around there is, but what relly leaves an impression are the style, the charm and those moments where stuff works just perfectly nd you trap some poor enemy agents in an endless loop of traps until they die or go completely mad. I do admit i play with mods - especially increased minion numbers - but there's also an extremely easy way to design your own mods just by editing text files in the games, and it's MAJESTIC. Wanna have a super-agent as a henchman? You cn make it happen. Wanna create a brand new henchman who looks like one of the evil geniuses, but armed with a flamethrower and powers taken from existing henchmen? Be my guest. Want an army of bodyguards hanging around your evil genius? Nothing's stopping you. And all of this can be accomplished just by editing tet files. It's a tinkerer's dream come true.

I know this video is four years old and this comment unlikely to be seen by anyone, even myself after I send it, but I don't care. At the beginning, when talking about how you were abusing the maid to make extra cash and it was fine for a "time sink" instead of outright cheating. This reminds me of Oblivion in the tutorial cave if you wait for an hour or two the goblins will run out of their programmed pathing and just stand still. You can wiggle yourself against a wall very close to one of them and max out sneak before the Emperor is even assassinated. Good times. And great videos!
I tend to put the whole base on Yellow Alert, turn off the annoying alarm, and everyone but the social and scientist minions arm up and shoot from a distance. The workers get pistols, the guards get machine guns, the mercenaries get bigger machine guns, and the marksmen are always armed. It evens things up nicely.
I loved this game. But never finished due to game breaking glitches that pissed me off and bored me to a point where I'd uninstall it and only try again years later, just to have the same experience. It's nice seeing a video on it. And I'm actually excited for the sequel
The only thing I remember as a kid from this game was wishing it were more fun. But then again, I struggled figuring out how to even play the damn game.I still have all the disks, maybe it is time I finally give it a real go. Or maybe I'll just wait for the second game and see if it is any good. Also holy crap I loved Republic The Revolution and never put it together that they were made by the same people. Journey to Pugachev is still one of my favorite video game scores of all time. I sometimes wonder if anyone else ever played it. Same goes for Ghost Master. :P
I am at least happy the sequel will have 4 evil geniuses, 3 islands to pick and you get to stay at one the whole playthrough, a tutorial, an actual sandbox mode, and using the doomsday weapon more than once. And not to mention a 5th evil genius and an extra island for dlc. We will have to wait and see what else they fixed, but I cant wait.
Hey, I know that was ages ago, but in the Gangland review, you mentioned the studio did a "sequel" or sorts, that you could never find a proper copy that ran. Honestly putting it in a VM has been in the back of my mind for a while. I suggested the game to Mandalore since he seems way more knowledgeable about getting games to work, I still wanna cover it myself so I really ought to attempt it.
I remember this game is great fun at first, but becomes very punishing as you progress through the story missions. Want to have some evil fun? Enjoy spec ops landing on your island 24/7 to fuck your shit up.
I love this game. It's sequel is good as well, but is basically just the same thing again and it's flaws feel so much less excusable so many years later.
...also, the best ending is having John Steele IN JAIL when you launch your doomsday weapon, so he is taunted then thrown onto the weapon , and is fired into orbit to freeze. Between that and the Earthquake Weapon made me feel such a monster, and I loved it.
You're always too hard on yourself- built in gameplay mechanics aren't exploits/cheating if they just happen to be OP. It's extremely hard to make everything well balanced in games- but it's much better to give the players OP options than to get screwed by an OP game in unfair ways. But great video btw
I am still laughing at how Ivan was described. And I am laughing more due to now him being an evil genius in the sequel. Lets hope there is less collateral damage when you bring him in.

I know it's niche, and an odd mix of gameplay styles, and not for everybody, but I have years of pleasant experiences with Evil Genius and fond memories therein, and I only have praise for it. I understand it's a flawed game, but I can easily ignore or look past them. I was probably the only fan of the game in the world unaware that the rumors of a sequel had turned to confirmations, so at E3 I was EXTREMELY surprised and pleased to get a reveal.

That and complaining about grenades producing too many particles and uncovering ugly flaws in navmeshes on stairs in Nazi zombie army 2 about a fortnight before release. Had this game been something like XCOM with separate base management and RTS scenarios it might've aged a lot better.
That ending cinematic makes me wonder, are people on the opposite side of the world suddenly feeling the effects of 2+ G pulling down on them?
Actually, it would be 12G, seeing as it counteracts the gravity of the planet as well as pulling people upwards. That's a lot of G.
It would need to be more than 2 G. If the doomsday device was only generating one G of force, then people would just be floating without going "up".

59:07 is it just me or is that UN room humongous? how many countries are in this alternative universe? over a thousand?.
my all time favorite thank you for reviewing it
That burning Australia jokes aged like fine wine
Can't wait for an Evil Genius 2 playthrough. It has some big flaws but I still had a lot of fun with it
welp second ones out time to rewatch this masterpieces
Been really enjoying your videos, glad your recent HDTF video showed in my sidebar.
Huh, Marcus Lindblom was listed as Producer in the credits, I wonder if that's the same Marcus Lindblom who translated Super Nintendo games in the 90s?
Wow it is, huh.

his laugh toward the end is fantastic
instant like
This game was a lot more interesting to play, than to complete.
As janky as this game is, I love it to absolute death.
I love this game, then again i've been wanting to do this in real life at some point... i have enough scars on my face to be a Bond Villain, after all...
Please dont become an evil genius. An evil genius taking over the world would give my life a grim dark end.
this game kinda reminds me of the Dungeons games, would love to see your take on these (particularly the first game, which is kinda janky but had interesting ideas the latter games kinda gave up on)
The fact you got FUCKING TEX to do your evil laugh is great. Hail Cargonia!
I KNEW I RECOGNISED IT
I can’t believe three years ago he predicted Australia getting lit on fire and someone blowing up Nashville
I thought I recognized that laugh.
How is this the first time I've heard about a sequel?!?!!
They are making a new one.
“Setting fire to Australia” oh no that didn’t age well
1:52 hey its that guy who rides around on horses and shit
is that y the aus is burning
47:37 i was listening to this part and thought it was the bill of rights, not an actual giant dollar bill
Blowing up Nashville and setting fire to Australia? Is this the year 2020 simulator?
haha i still have a copy of that game.
man nostalgia hits hard here
I remember playing a game like this called "mastermind" on miniclip or armor games
Newgrounds
this video is over a hour long, i thought it was less then a quarter of that.
Setting fire to Australia MonkaS
I also played this game as a kid, as well as c&c generals, and never completed it
"hind sight is 2020" OH COME ON
I always ended up using cheats and even then it still felt like it took forever.
Evil genius 2 got announced
aaaa I can't wait for the sequel
