Avec un Nottingham de luxe quoique trop vibré; Gruberova se surpasse (elle ose et réussit à 56 ans un mi bécarre certe facultatif mais éléctrisant!). Le reste à l'avenant. Ici nous avons tout; de la reine vindicative à la femme outragée. De la musique et du théâtre!

Well, OK then. Truce. There are some voices that are not to all tastes. There is only one singer I've heard in my lifetime who was completely free of what you would call flaws - it's Arleen Auger. Perfect pitch, breath control, placement, delivery of coloratura, legato, interval leaps both up and down. Yet. The ones who had definite "quirks" in their singing were the one who provoked the most excitement, and division of opinions.

La Gruberova doesn't fit within your limited conception of art, where it's only about notes and stylistic approaches, so you trash her. But what do you say when an audience gives her a 10 minute, rapturous standing ovation, as my wife and I heard in Barcelona 2 years ago, after "Al dolce guidami," an event that rarely happens except to the really distinguished artists.
Oh, Gruberova please retire.

Callas always had great top notes, unlike Gruberova who has small, screamy, off-pitched and ugly high notes.
She was the same in every performance, no matter what opera. Complete opposite of Scotto, who, despite a faulty production of voice, offered a performance. Rysanek had the worst technique of any singer I saw, ever, but her powers as an artist were unbelievable. I've never seen an artist grip and enslave her audience like that one did.
Fair enough. A lot of people feel that way.
Devia is an excellent musician, but she's the dullest, most pallid artist I have ever beheld in a major singer. I saw her over 20 times in various roles and then I gave up. No charm, no star quality, no personality. Zero.
