Thank you for your video! I actually used it for a different purpose but you showed me that small ladders can be unfolded into a longer ladder. Appreciate it and please keep posting videos! Love your content.
Well spent my whole life working with ladders , Aluminum Siding Installer and Vinyl, also roofing , really took it's toll, in my 70s now , Good advice I could and but not into it .Pay attention folks.
Thank sir, I'm a home inspector and got a roof that is the old Eastern salt box roof. I do have a roof that's over the porch that I might be able to get on first but it has a 3/12 pitch. I'll try to the foam thing. I got the weekend to find one.
I use stainless anchor points ($4 ?) and ratchet straps to stabilize my main ladder.....in and out and left and right..For the short ladder I would definitely use anchors and straps and they are good for your safety rope anchor too so long as you use long screws into the studs....
Why not use a device like the Guardian Ladder Stability Anchor to attach the ladder to the fascia or rafters? I have one such device on each truck. A definite must have!
👍🏼👊🏼🦖🍺 I honestly can’t believe that’s a real product, just didn’t think the industry safety people would give it a pass. Great idea tho, I mean we have all done waaaay sketchier stuff on a roof, right
That depends on their age. If they're newer, you may be able to do that, but you'll run the risk of cracking them. If they're older, you'll almost definitely crack them.
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. If the angle of the roof is to the sides rather than to the front ( similar to the easy method example) can I still use the pitch hopper? The ladder will not be straight, maybe ope and extended ?
Not sure I'm picturing what you're describing. You can use the pitch hopper on any roof slope, but be sure to have other safety measures in place just in case.
What do you do for sheet metal roofs? I was thinking of screwing eye lags into the siding of the second story to tie the base of the ladder to the house so it couldn't slide out..
If you can position the ladder so that it extends over a window then you can use the window frame to anchor the bottom of the ladder by using rope tied to a board inside the window. The board has to be long enough to extend well past the edges of the window and in a way such that it won't come through hope that makes sense
He said you have to maintain three points of contact at all times, then climbed up using only one hand. Each time he let go to grab the next rung he was left with only two points of contact Additionally, the ladder should have extended higher (3 not 2 rungs above roof)
I've done this same thing on a tile roof, but I made sure that the 2nd ladder was straddling a ridge. I wouldn't trust using a foam pad on a sloped tile roof. The bigger concern is breaking tiles with the feet of the 2nd ladder.
What a legend, my big respect to you Sir for showing how to climb safely and filing at the perfect angle AT THE SAME TIME ! Quick question, when you hook that yellow 'ladder helper' into that gutter, what if that gutter is shaky? The reason I ask: my gutter is those "K" type plastic gutter and it's super loose so in my case, that yellow ladder helper may suddenly give way !
I'm Coating a mobile home Roof tomorrow I'm finishing 14feet lip gutters, vents, then rolling Coating on Roof. I don't want to get on the roof and I can reach with long pole but I know it going to be a arms and back pain. I have to ladders that helps me. I want to set up scaffolding but can't get it high enough. Coating is very slippery. My Roof has a small pitch. The problem is that Roof is not strong enough to walk on. Helper uses boards I'm not that brave. 70 trying to get this done so I can work on other projects that need to be done by October. Do you know of any scaffolding that is light weight & easy setup for 1 person. I'm a woman and these ladder s are heavy and awkward to move around the perimeter of house.
I would not use this on a tile roof. If you can't straddle a ridge on the lower level with a ladder pull, or you can't access the upper story with a tall ladder, use a drone to inspect the upper story roof. (I would also try to avoid a ladder pull, as the ladder feet can crack the tiles)
I need to repaint the metal top (cap) of a chimney. The front of it is about 24 ft to 28 ft plus another 7 ft away from wall. so I will need an about 40 ft extension ladder which I don't even know exists, the rent a van to transported. So, I was thinking of climbing to the back which is about 12 ft high from roof using one ladder to climb to roof and another ladder to the top of chimney. Very scary and unsafe but I guess no many options. I will tie a rope around chimney and try to buy a safety vest harness to tie rope to it. Anybody has a better idea? Please advise.
That's the pitch of the roof. Another way to say it is "rise-over-run." The first number is the number of inches of vertical rise of the roof for every 12" of horizontal run of the roof. So 4/12 would be 4" of vertical rise for every 12" of horizontal run. A 12/12 pitch is very steep. It's a 45-degree angle.
Not sure how that would help. The back of the house is a straight up 2 story and the point of this video is how to access a tall roof with only a short ladder.
I guarantee that this video would have our HSE having an apoplectic fit, there is so much wrong and would not be approved. I trust this guy has indemnity insurance to fend of all the claims when someone takes his advice and it all goes wrong. The only safe way to access the upper roof is to use a cherry picker, the hire cost is minimal.
@@homesteadroofing the the top of the garage doesn't line up with the roof peak..I had a regular ladder to try but I was like no way...but found the little ladder that you have for extra support...so gotta give that a try. Gotta put tar around the white vent pipe
@@rogernelson9029 as long as you're under the pitch hopper weight limit you're fine. a lot of people forget how heavy the ladders are and if them plus the ladder weight is over the limit then yea it becomes unsafe.
Yes, it's just less safe because you're bending over the roof edge to pull up the ladder. The best solution is to have a ladder tall enough to reach the higher roof.
The most respect to this man for not only doing this task, but recording footage while doing it.
A legend
i stand the second ladder next to the first and pull it up ready to go , thanks for tips ,

What an amazing video. Great advice I didnt know I needed.. props for helping the younger generation get things done the right way, thank you much!
Thank you so much. That was really encouraging to read.

Great information you took away half of my fears and put back quarter of it back😜
Jet packs are going to be a game changer for construction trades.

This answered my question perfectly! Thank you!
you can also stick the ladder legs into your cougar paw boots to keep it from slipping out. toes facing down the slope of course.
😬
Sounds scary, but would probably work.
@@homesteadroofing I've done it a few times off a covered porch onto a 2nd floor. It does work.
Great video. Would you please make a video or refer me to the one on how to safely get off the ladder and then get back on the ladder from the roof?
Extending the ladder three rungs above the roof enables you to safely hold ladder as step onto and off roof
I use the hopper all the time when i mason chimneys. Amazing piece of equipment

They sell it on Amazon
i just might be able to finnish a project now! thank you! will the sponge also work on a vey steep roof?
The sponge will work, but definitely be careful! Best choice is to wear a safety harness and be tied off.
Great tips and advice! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂❣
I gotta find that pitch hopper now that's a game changer.
UNTIL IT'S NOT !!
Can I straddle my garage gable with a ladder on Boral concrete roof tiles?
That depends on their age. If they're newer, you may be able to do that, but you'll run the risk of cracking them. If they're older, you'll almost definitely crack them.
Is there a chance for those shingles to give out with either the foam or pitch hopper?
I don't believe so.
In the UK we use sky hooks
Like the sponge mat idea new to me.

I have a metal roof on my wrap round porch how do i set a ladder it that it wont slide or scratch up the roof?
I would not recommend putting a ladder on a metal roof surface.
Great video
Thank you 🙏🏾

What can I use for shingle wood shakes?
A ladder tall enough to reach the 2nd story.

I would not use this tool, then. I would probably attach "stand-offs" to the ladder instead.
Now how about when the peak of the garage doesnt line up to the house roof peak?
The top of your ladder can rest against the slanted gable end of the higher roof.

You could check with a local tool rental place or Home Depot.
How would you do this on a metal roof?
I would use a long ladder to access the 2nd story
Gee, even my closest friends don't know I have a short ladder.
Well this method work on a S tile roof?

DO NOT TIE A ROPE TO YOUR CHIMNEY. It's not designed to withstand lateral forces like that and may be easily damaged or even collapse
@@bobbing4snapplesok, thanks for the advise.
You can get a roof anchor and harness at most big box hardware stores.
Now is my ladder has rubber ends do i still need the foam Cushing? I feel like the rubber would be a good anti slip grip already for asphalt shingles.
Use a foam cushion or the Pitch Hopper and tie-off the ladder to the gutter hangers. I would never trust just the rubber feet on a ladder.
Definitely yes use that cushion
What does "12-12" "9-12" "5-12" mean?
That's the pitch of the roof. Another way to say it is "rise-over-run." The first number is the number of inches of vertical rise of the roof for every 12" of horizontal run of the roof. So 4/12 would be 4" of vertical rise for every 12" of horizontal run.
