I had one that said they could have the insurance company to pay for a new roof. After listening to the pitch, I wouldn’t allow them (h&w) on my roof to inspect for a quote. After watching this video, I am so glad I didn’t let them on my roof.

Here in NY we have clay color siding. Not a tan clay or dark gray clay but a very neutral clay. We have something resembling a weathered wood roof now but are considering black. I'm hoping to find a black that's warm toned not cool. Any suggestions?

What if a roofer seals your singles out of your shed because they forgot to bring theirs? That is what Vaught Roofing in Kansas City did and then tried to claim that I called them and offered my left over shingles from my shed build for free. They kept with that lie even though it was clearly set in the contract that they would provide all roofing materials. And then they came back and stole more shingles after I complained. Vaught Roofing in Kansas City is straight up criminal and crazy to boot.

I am 65 yo retired welder and just finished re-roofing my home by myself. My home is 2800 SF total, 2000 SF add-on to original 800SF 1939 A-frame with a valley in between and another gable out the back(another valley). I already had nail guns, small compressor, box of roofing nails and project took me about a month. I prefer to support small businesses but I bought all the materials from Lowes. I got estimates from smaller roofing suppliers but costs were same or more than Lowes and they would not offer any discounts or price match. As a veteran, Lowes always gives me 10% plus if you buy an entire pallet you get 10% more for 20% discount. I backed my 14K dump trailer up to my back door which is about 7' high, threw used shingles/decking into, 4 loads to dumps and I believe total was near 8K pounds. Then I picked up 3 pallets of shingles(about 9K pounds) plus: decking, ice/water shield, underlayment, valley flashing, drip edge, gutters from Lowes. Lowes will not put shingles onto roof so I backed my trailer up to 7' roof and made a stairway with shingles up to roof. I had a pallet left over and working on re-roofing my shop now but will have to carry shingles up ladder onto shop roof. I spent $7K on house roof and have a pallet of roofing left over for shop roof. Total cost by roofing company would have been over $40K. I would recommend having a harness, retractable lifeline anchored to trusses. I had several on house and shop so I can move around safely

Well, last roof I had done, I did myself, so I owned all the leftover shingles.

@homesteadroofing I may be mistaken about this, but i dont think every shingle manufacturer requires you to use their brand of underlayment for manufacturer warranty. Just something to research.

Some roofers are too cheap or too lazy to get an accurate measurement. They overestimate 2 SQ.

It is a kind of BS. The agent is not interested at all in helping his clients to file claims as, in this case, he loses his "claim-free bonus". Besides, nowadays, it is a rare case when a customer gets his claim approved by the insurance company (especially if you are a State Farm policyholder). It takes us, as public adjusters, sometimes a year to get a claim approved. Ordinary roofers will just drop the client after the first try with the unsuccessful claim and move on to another poor fellow...

I am planning to use Owens Corning High Definition Duration Shasta White, and my roofer is trying to talk me out of it. My house is light colored brick. I will be changing trim colors to get some contrast. What do you think?

I have a ballatyne brick on my house and planning to go with the Malarkey Legacy Brilliant Black colour. Am I crazy with all the heat it can absorb? For that reason also considering their ivory mist or Silverwood…..

I have had 3 roofs installed on 3 different properties over the past decade. GAF Timber IKO Dynasty BP Mystique .. GAF Timber shows most lifting and now starting to delaminate after 5 years (could be install), IKO Dynasty shows some delamination but no lifting after 11 years, and BP Mystique in comparison has lifting and most delamination after only 3 years. . 1. IKO , 2. GAF, 3. BP. I would install IKO/GAF shingles again but not BP. IKO Dynasty have aged the best in my case.

What is the purpose of insurance any more, if not to cover damage, especially when it’s out of the homeowners control? Hail damage after 10 years of never missing a payment. Fine, new roof but we’re going to raise your rates to get that money back. 😤

I live in Florida a roofer working for some company checked my roof and told me to make a claim. He then had me sign a document that any insurance check would go to his company to do the roof. My question is can i go with anther company to repair my roof knowing there reputation better.? Or am I stuck with having this company take the total amount of the insurance check regardless of the cost of roof. .. I feel they're taking a-lot more over and above what the cost to have to roof done .

How are you to work in the dark? Knowing what got approved? That is bad advice & a setup for Insurance Fraud!

I have a red brick house with a forest green door and garage doors. Beige window trim and gutters. What would be your recommendation of roof shingle in andmark pro series?

I got estimates in 2021 knowing I wasn't in a rush to get my roof done because it's in pretty good condition for a near 30 year old roof. Also, the shingle I wanted was out of stock and they couldn't get them. The roofer said you should just do the roof done now before inflation. Little did I know this guy was 100% correct. In 2021 my roof would have been $2000 less. This shows on all the estimates then and now. oh well, I have a choice of any color I like now but it will cost me big time ;)

My question is this I gave the roofing company my insurance check to do a full replacement on my roof they have my money but they cannot give me a date to start they said sometime in Aug ? Why can’t I get a date they said I am 6th on the list what does take mean

We missed the one year window to put in the first claim due to a storm a couple years ago. There was a tornado about 4 months ago and the first amount of damage is still there so our insurance won’t help us with this year’s tornado damage

Try walking on a dark roof vs a light roof. How about putting recording or remote thermometers in attics for comparison? A friend replaced a shake roof with a dark composition roof and cooling with a whole house fan was no longer adequate. He had to install A/C.

Years ago I was informed reddish-brown shaded shingles reflected the most infrared and were cooler. Any thoughts? Also if black shingles are subjected to higher temps would they not degrade faster over time negatively affecting the lifespan?

Thanks for explaining. I just got a very rude awakening from USAA insurance regarding not having "non-recoverable depreciation." 😢 Only got $2200 for a new roof after depreciation and deductible. To add insult, they raised my premiums significantly after the claim.😭 lesson learned

Make a claim and every insurance company will know now with thier filing system. They also raise your yearly rate for many years so they start getting their money back.

Homeowners roofers insurance all 3 party's scam

Light tan in some lights almost looks like it’s yellowish but it’s light tan it has weathered wood gaf now and id like to replace it with desert sand from tamko(we live at the beach) shutters are blue, we need to upgrade those and the door which will be blue or wood. But they don’t have desert sand in gaf timberline and I want the better shingle so I was thinking of doing shakewood? Or barkwood? But I don’t know it’s tough…

lol.....my 30 year old Owens Corning 3 tab shingle are going on 30 years here in NY and look great. Several hurricanes and a freaking tornado that took my trees and deposited them in my neighbors pool. ...still kept all my shingles. Everyone in my area have been getting the GAF architectural shingles installed and they DO NOT hold up well at all. They look old with mildew and overall, lumpy bumpy and ugly. Replacing mine soon to be proactive but sad if I need to go with GAF.

Roofing 30 years. Give a price. Homeowners agree to the price. End of discussion.

A roofer came to my door offering to get my insurance company to pay for my roof replacement damage. I told him to call me back in a week to talk about it.
