Sad, the price he pays for fame, but thankfully his music keeps him going, and I love him for it!

Yes, of course Neil Diamond has never been able to not produce songs. It is a major part of who he is. Great talent like his simply goes together with fame. No fame, no making a living off his music either and he wouldn't have wanted that either. But perhaps he disliked the taking over of himself by the whole fame and marketing circus in the way that it does. All the contracts and contracted appearances remove control from the artists. David Cassidy suffered hugely from this monster too and sank. Neil seems always to have been strong enough not to sink under all that stress. And in the last years, he seems to have really enjoyed touring the globe again.
    Great clip! Thank you!

It would have been nice for him if he could have taken 5 or 10 years off in his 40s and 50s. He is such a nice man.

He seemed very unhappy here, in this part of his life. Fame to him was ruining private life. 2 failed marriages and then 20 years because he said he couldn’t do it again., ruin another love. But now seems happy again. So glad. Just sad he’s got a horrible illness....... he’s an amazing man. Love his music

I heard he could be very moody in his younger years. I guess he wasn't very happy at this time. Glad he came around with a better attitude as he got older. I love him and his music!

Neil is right. Too much attention by the media can destroy your private life...

Saw this recently on BBC4 Neil Diamond night. Neil seemed very irritable.

. . . I remember oh so well, the original
broadcast of this, albeit short interview (about 5-6 minutes shown) on BBC 2’s ‘Newsnight’ in June ‘77.
Neil was a day or two away from opening his 6 concerts, 5 night stand at The London Palladium. He had just flown-in from Vienna after playing at least 20 concerts in the then, ‘West Germany’, France and Austria. I was delighted to catch this then, very rare British TV interview, a few days before my 680 mile first-ever round trip to see Neil in concert. The same (almost) round trip the following weekend to witness my second at
Woburn Abbey. I don’t think Neil was ‘irritable’ here … probably a tad jaded after his European-leg ; and we can all be ‘more to the point’ when jaded.

@@donaldcook3112 I saw him 2nd time round at Woburn. It was windy and you could clearly see Neil was cold. I don't think it was anywhere near as special as the first concert which I have heard on tape. The first show was filmed but has never been shown as Director William Friedkin of "The Omen" fame quit after a row with Neil just before the show.

. . . Yes, I know, I posted that information on several ‘threads’ where some referred to Neil being …
“ very late on stage “.
Freidkin wanted an ‘8:00’ concert-time start - ‘for the light’ … Neil did not; ‘too much directly-into-his-eyes’ sunlight. Freidkin’s black Rolls was seen driving away at 8:30. Neil hit the stage at 8:48.
You are correct about the second Woburn Abbey concert in early June, 2005. A ‘three layers’ at least not-at-all ‘warm’ English summer evening.
We, the blessed one’s who were there on 2nd July ‘77 - a p e r f e c t event in every way (excepting that Neil, finally left the stage at 11:18) always asked each other … “ Do you think Neil will play Woburn Abbey ever again?..” No-one knew of course. It was a great concert (I have never heard of Neil not putting on a proper show; unlike some I have read about.
One fella of long-standing even has the audacity NOT to face his audience, if he can’t be bothered on the night, I have been told. Goes by
‘ Minibus Saintsburys ‘ or something similar. There was, at least, 75,000 there; don’t be fooled by reported figures of ‘55,000’. Interestingly, the promoter, one Robert Pattinson, has never been heard of since (to my knowledge) Neil’s fee was £250,000 back then. Several million, of course,
at today’s rates. ‘Elf n’ safety’ limited hie second ‘Woburn’ to 45,000 with raised seating around three sides.
There is o n l y one place I am going to, h a v i n g to be … on the 2nd of July ‘27, on those exact same lawns until they insist we leave.
      I just - k n o w - I will not be the only one there . And I live about 300 miles north . It was just t h a t special .
God bless Neil - he has given us so very much , never forgetting that unmatched ‘Neil Diamond Band ‘.
And all concerned - behind the scenes .

@@donaldcook3112 The cameras did roll and filmed the whole evening. We can only hope some of the concert will be released eventually.
