Neil is such a sweetheart
Yeah...I'm impressed. I share everybody's comments below, I've never seen this before and it's fascinating Neil was so quick on his feet, its difficult with live television and it must be difficult to be asked the same questions time and time again, but Neil holds up every time all the time, thanks for finding this little gem, it really is amazing the amount of early TV stuff on Neil that's appearing on You Tube...very good!

That was one side of Neil I've never seen before. He is so awesome in everything he does. He always exudes comfort when he is in his environment. Did I say how much I have loved him over the past 50+ years; ever since I was in 2nd grade.
Who would have ever imagined that a music legend like Neil Diamond went to college on an athletic scholarship.An incredible story thank you Neil.

My mom use to watch this show every day and I remember watching it when we weren’t in school. Great to see Neil in the early days,he did a great job. Also remember the woman with the banjo! Good old days!!!

Absolutely incredible!!!! Goes against the cultivated myth that Neil was very nervous on his early performances. He is very confident here talking about something that he is clearly very passionate about and his fencing ability is of a very high standard. In the year Star Wars was released (1977) Neil released the album "I'm glad you're here with me tonight" which featured the song "Dance of the Sabres" based on the skill and romanticism associated with fencing. Shame it was never picked up by the film franchise as it would be a great accompaniment to the light sabre duels. Link to the song here:

I saw Neil on another talk show, hosted by Merv Griffin, demonstrating some fencing moves. This was in early 1968. Thanks for posting this. I never knew about the fencing segment before, although I have seen clips of Neil singing on this show.

@@sarahfooth6725 No, but I wish I did. I have never come across anything from that show here on UA-cam or anywhere else. Neil also sang a couple of songs that were written by others that I have never heard him sing anywhere else, "Stranger in Paradise" and "Jenny Rebecca".

Neil at 26 years of age
The '70s was the period of imagery David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust, Alice Cooper, Elton John and Captain Fantastic to name a few. I always felt that Neil's early album covers had an undercurrent of The Musketeer, obviously his fencing experience did surface in his music. I wish he had gone the full extend and worn the cape, spurs, hat and sword. The ultimate sabres dance........dance sabres dance...
