@@Patmclean232 I'd say more like a .32 ACP since it launches a 50 Grain .32 (.321/.323) round pill. Loaded with a 50 grains round ball traveling at 1000 FPS, you get around 150 joules of muzzle energy out of this small Remmy (which is comparable to a good .22LR load).
That same gun loaded with very fine granulated and COMPRESSED black powder like the Swiss null or 4fg will give you a little more oomph reaching the power threshold of a .32 ACP (200/230 joules). The idea being to reproduce the original load who used the very potent hazard powder favored in paper cartridges. Your typical .380 round hits quite harder (290/350 joules) and is on a different league in both bullet weight and bullet diameter. Way more powerful even in short barrels like the Ruger LCP or Keltec P-3AT

That compressed load with your 1849 is downright impressive. Best I could do with any powder was about 780 fps with Triple 7. About a 20 grain charge. I would be curious what your estimated charge was.

When I did informal bullet penetration tests, I used a line of 1 gal. water jugs on a table at waist level. Kneeled so the the muzzle was 10' from the first jug. Very splashy!
I have just ordered the 1863. I ordered the brass model from Taylor. They have not been available for a long time so I went with whats available. I have the identical 1849. I am hoping the 1863 is a better shoot. Thank you for the excellent video
Hope you like it! The .31 is one revolver that I don't mind having in brass due to the lowered chance of frame-stretching. They have been hard to find lately, so good on you for snagging one!
@@beargillium2369 I really like the pistol. Its much smaller then 1849 in length and girth. The rear sight on the 1849 is the hammer when cocked. I dislike this. The sight profile is difficult for me(my eyes are not what they used to be) The build quality of the 1849 which is a Uberti is better. The 1863 is small and fits into a front pocket of my jeans or a inside breast pocket of a coat with no issue. It is light enough to not cause the coat to sag. It is highly concealable. The loading lever broke on the first loading process.(repair was easy) I load off pistol now. I like the spur trigger and the cylinder notch holds strong allowing the pistol to be carried safely with all 5 cylinders loaded. I have tried 4F & 3 F powders. Triple 7 3F is my powders of choice with this pistol. Has good power and easy to clean.

I have the Johnston and Dow 44. And the colt cartridge Works 36. I had Garrett from the 11 Bang Bang UA-cam channel. send me some Confederate Richmond's laboratory 36 caliber bullets. To shoot in my original Griswold and Gunnison. I would be happy to send you some cast bullets to review. It might take me sometime tho. Lead is becoming very hard to get where I live. Especially soft lead

You want increase the vol and pen you need to use .232 round balls ir cinicals. Real black powder as these were originally designed for (4f) will also do wonders.

Yes sir. Nice. I'm get me a chrony. So helpful in figuring out stuff on different powder's, bullets ,u know. But then I'm do my remi 58 8" barrel n powder and 45 acp kurst konverter, and colt navy 5" barrel. Both are pietta 44s. Thinking of putting steel plate in front of chrony so just rods stick up. And Mount cheap camera or just have walk up look every shot. Idk but I know I don't won't to hit it like u saying. Andrew using Pyro decks that burns hotter than normal black powder and it makes your guns rust way more. That’s why your Remington cylinder is so rusty.
Would your box for an 1858 Remington like mine have room for a box of 50 cowboy loads in one of the compartments? Maybe room too for me to put my percussion cylinder in? Also I would love to see you get a Howell .32 S&W conversion cylinder for your 1863 Remington and compare it to the .22lr and the baby colt in .31 caliber cap and ball
One of the compartments is fitted for a spare cylinder. I'm sure you can fit some cartridges in the other compartments, such as the powder flask compartment to the left side of the box, but not sure about a 50 round box.
Just to let you it's very eazy and cheap to nickel plate at home. If you ever want to fix the Remington. Can can send you a video about it if you want.
It's a caldwell - base model . It can be a little finicky with readings if there's wind at times, but all things considered it does its job! #720001 model no.
Anybody have a clue when the Remington is going to be available? Midway says it’s overdue to be in stock. Right now a colt wells Fargo pocket is on sale $50 off but I really just want the Remington and don’t want to settle with a colt when a week later the Remington finally hits the market. I want the Remington because of its size. 7.5 inches is a lot better than 9.5. Any and all advice is welcome
It's been tough these days to find them in stock, I would check all the places (Dixie gun works, EMF, taylors & co., etc) and also try Gunbroker. I haven't looked for a new one in a while so i couldn't tell you when they'll be back in stock. Just keep your eyes open and be on the lookout

curious about this test on regular 3f powder though not pyrodex.. i always stay away from pyrodex, people i heared it gets very dirty and hard to clean etc

Think ill stick to round ball and regular powder for a 44 though.. dont wanna overpen and i see the conicals with pyrodex really have some serious over pen on a 44 lol. So you’re doing a test comparing two pistols and you don’t even know how many grams of powder you are using? How is that fair? One could hold more powder than the other
Powder is measured by volume in 'grains' not 'grams'. Both guns hold 15 grains of powder, give or take just a few grains. While it may make a difference if the Remington holds 15 grains and the 1849 Colt holds 16.5 grains, that difference will be subtle as it's not a large difference (for example- 15 grains vs 25 grains). Also, to your other comment, the Remingtons' cylinder has rust on it because the nickel plating has peeled off over the years, not because of the powder used; I've addressed this many times in other videos.

Agreed! It is a very light projectile but it does fly at fairly high velocities.
💯💯💯! It’s a little smaller than 9mm and it’s going at just under 1000 fps.. I’d say it’s gotta be close to the energy of a .380…

I hear light to no compression is best for triple 7 simply place the ball on the powder no crunch
15 grains is about all I can fit in the chamber on this 1849 Colt. Like you say, the compression makes all the difference with the .31 cal guns.

I've come to find that if the bullet is fully compressed on the powder it will have pretty fast velocities!

The spur trigger isn't a great design, so due to that reason I would choose the Colt's trigger over the Remington
