    So literally this video plus telling me not to try to have passive arms on the downswing have saved my game. Have seen hundreds of videos and taken lessons for years and you guys are the best. Huge huge thanks!!!

    Great video...I spent 25 years trying to maintain the right to keep a flat left and vice versa.. That with axis tilt? Oh Lord..my short game was even screaming bad. I still kept it up.. I could even see in Tiger's Golf My Way an overhead of his bent as hail left wrist in the follow through and it never occurred to me. Thank you for the confirmation. Actually practicing it with getting more forward with less tilt REALLY helps undo the years of bad advice of holding lag. Thanks again for everything.

    Great video! I was told to have a flat lead wrist at the top and to add flexion at the start of the downswing. I found it hard to do this consistently and have a square club face at impact. There's a lot of instruction out there that makes the swing more complicated than it should be.

    Great explanation of what the wrists do in the golf swing. I had challenges with an early release of my wrist, right around hip height. My swing thought to correct that was to hold the right wrist back all the way through the downswing into my follow through. When filmed, the right wrist did not appear to stay cocked but did as you described.

    Praise galore. My main problem is still outside in swing, watching vids of my swing I detect lack of right wrist extension (tray holding) and I’m never sure if all of my idiosyncrasies are you he cause of my swing path. I start hard from the top which doesn’t allow my body to keep up which causes my chicken wing. Don’t slice a lot but do lose too much distance for not solid contact. Taking lessons late in life is tough trying to reteach a retired body new paths is fun. Watching tons of vids trying to determine the correct path, thought the A swing was pretty good then latched onto Mike Malaska vids. Bottom line use gears guy for proof positive! Long winded but that’s it.

    Super vid, gents! Can you please explain whether body motion or muscle action in the fore arms creates the motion itself? You have engage at first, then get more passive at the bottom!? Or does body motion create the two angles, top and bottom?

  • @grooveincorporated
    @grooveincorporated 6 років тому +1

    Hi guys. Please please can you do the "detailed" wrist action video you alluded to. There isn't much I disagree with you guys about but this might be one thing. I think it is very poorly understood, even by experts. I did the waiter's tray thing for many years and did have success with it. The main problem is that changes occur in the swing sometime before you intend them to: holding the tray at the top caused me to whip the club head inside too early at first shaft parallel and therefore cross the line at the top etc etc. A couple of other points. I think golfers do need to consciously think about doing the lead wrist screw down action through impact (+/- with a rotating the upside down plate with the (palm down) trail wrist through impact). This or vice versa goes hand n hand (chicken vs egg) with getting the shoulders open at impact and therefore getting shaft lean which all great ball strikers have. It has to be a conscious thought because by the last shaft parallel position, the clubhead has developed so much momentum that the "natural" action is for the club head to catch up with the hands with the resultant flipping action. Physics studies have calculated that this momentum is large. Flipping is a weak action because the golfer has by definition lost "control" of the club head through impact. In conclusion, I think that holding the trail wrist set combined with a screw down type action through impact is a positive thought to have for strong and accurate golf strikes..Trail wrist set vs. screw down is a topic for another day as the left and right wrist actions are not simple mirror images of each other due to the left arm vs shaft hinge point not being at the junction of left and right wrist

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 років тому

      You touched on a very important point... the wrists do not mirror each other. That is difficult to wrap your head around at anything but full speed.
      Perhaps even more important than that... what you do at with the wrists DO NOT translate to the club head... not in real time, and sometimes not at all. Another extremely difficult fact to wrap the head around. The shaft that connects the hands and head is constantly bending and flexing and not doing it at a 1:1 ratio at all.
      Just looking at the wrists without looking at the corresponding head and shaft movements is incomplete. It's important, but it's incomplete because at some point in the swing the golfer (especially the better players) start responding to the club face. And I have yet to see any scientific studies or research or attempts to look at where the face is pointing relative to what the golfer is doing. And that's a pretty big deal wouldn't you say?

      @grooveincorporated 6 років тому +1

    You guys talked about following this video up with a gears video of those angles at impact sometime in the future. Did that ever happen? I'm struggling with a flip and every article and UA-cam teacher out there says the right wrist needs to be bent back at impact. Am I missing something here?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      We've never seen a player flip it at impact who didn't have to. Meaning there is something going on with the face or arms much earlier in the downswing that requires you to dump those angles and flip at near impact. Fixing the cause is what you'll want to focus on not trying to change your wrist angles at impact... that will never last when you're out there on the course because the cause would still be there and always win that battle.

    • @wjjohns04able
      @wjjohns04able 5 років тому

      Athletic Motion Golf I agree with that. I have a hip/shoulder stall issue that I believe causes mine. But if I try to continue to keep the lower half moving through impact and my right wrist keeps firing through impact to, I can hit some nasty shanks. That's why I was curious if the pros have a backwards bend at impact.

  • @ec-gb7uh

    Great stuff as always! Is there such a thing as a drive and hold release. Recently I was reading Kelvin Miyahira's articles and he recommends a "drive and hold release". It is essentially at impact lead forearm supination, flexion of the left wrist, and ulnar deviation. For the right it would be right forearm pronation, right wrist extension, and ulnar deviation. What are your thoughts on his research and what he considers an ideal release?

  • @rickstevens9628

    How do you gentlemen feel about putting some pressure on the left thumb by the heel of the right hand and pushing the handle out for almost the entire swing, but especially during the backswing? It gives a great wrist cock, wider swing-arc, a fairly square clubhead at the top and seems to eliminate some hand manipulation of the face through impact. Thanks for your input.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf

    Hi, thanks for the vid. Just wondering would holding that wrist angle for a fraction too long lead to an open club face at contact? I had a round of straight blocks/pushes last week and had been working on holding that angle a bit longer beforehand. Thanks

    Can you explain the wrist angles and how that affects the launch angle? For example, I've got a 21-degree launch angle on my 6iron, ball speed of 121, spin at 5700 and carry distance of 171 yards. Trackman data shows an avg tour pro launches their 6 iron at 14.1 degrees. In looking online, a few teaching pros suggest it could be the wrist angle at the top. I use Wilson V6 Tour irons with S300 shaft and the loft on my 6 iron is 31 degrees.

    Great video....I would ask that you tell us what percent of the wrist break have you given up at the moment of impact. Clearly, the right wrist would not be completely straight at impact. I would assume there is still some amount of bend backwards still present in the right wrist at impact. If your left wrist is straight at impact, the right wrist has to be bent back to some degree. Can you be specific as to the amount of bend that is likely still left in the right wrist at impact? Thank you much.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 років тому +1

      It varies from golfer to golfer and has a lot to do with their grip at setup. But one thing that is interesting is that the left and right wrist do not bend and flex at the same rate. Just because the left wrist is at a certain angle doesn't mean the right is at the mirrored angle... it's a complex subject for sure.

    Hi Shaun and Mike,
    I’m loving these videos. You guys do such a great job and I feel like I can really trust your content. I would like to see a video on the left hand/wrist in the release and follow through. I’ve taken the concept of keeping the face square to reduce ROC to the extreme and feel it might be the cause of my hanging back. Also I’ve taken the concept of rotation and overdone it which I think might be the cause of my inability to maintain lag - I think my rotation is causing the cast, not pushing with the right. I get forward shaft lean at impact through continuing to rotate my body hard. I know I can get more distance from my body.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      Pretty commone, Michael... it has to do with how you have the club in you hands at setup and how the wrists are rotated to have the club look "normal" down there behind the ball. What does it look like from down the line when the club is parallel to the ground in the takeaway?

    So from impact to low point you are saying the right wrist does not stay bent. It releases. Is that correct? From what I see in almost every player on tour the right wrist does stay bent post impact. In one of your videos using Gears you show the shaft lean has increased 12 percent post impact. Can you please clarify as this is confusing. Would appreciate a response. Thank you.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  Рік тому +1

      Yes, it releases. No player who’s good enough to play on TV holds that angle or increases it. That doesn’t mean the angle is completely gone at impact, but it is QUICKLY be lost on the way to impacts d beyond. We have never shown a 12% increase at impact because that’s not what happens 😉. Rewatch that video and I bet you might hear it differently 🤓

I have been playing close to 3 years and the one big flaw in my swing is I don't hold that wrist angle. It dies like you said, it starts to release early. I've been trying to fix it. I try holding it and I know that's not what your supposed to do, but I struggle with that. Could you please do more videos on Wrist angle. Also do you guys review swings? That gives a lot of golfers trouble, and your instincts are correct... it's not a fix you can do with holding the angles in the wrist, everything that leads up to that point is going to determine what those wrists do or look like at impact.
      Yes, we have to options for swing reviews... the first one is free, and is first come first serve. The line is long right now, but we do plan to get everyone's swing reiewed. If you need something done quickly, we have a paid option ($50) that is working on a 48 hour turn around time right now. This might be a dumb question, the wrist shouldn’t be back to neutral at impact correct? Or else there is no shaft lean. I was able to hit good shot with right wrist still bend around 45 degree because of the body rotation. As your left shoulder is opening up, don’t u need some bend in the right wrist to square up the face? The video explanation on impact almost sound like you want your body angles to same at setup. I end up “scooping” the ball. Sorry for getting too nerd out on this.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf

      The feel part of this is difficult to comment on because we all have such a different description of what we feel like is happening, but the numbers we've seen for the wrist just don't show angles being held. They are constantly moving and changing. The when, like with the rest of the swing, is the big deal.

And btw, it ruined my game, my attitude, my desire to teach and I left the business. Worst thing that ever happened to me was taking lessons from a TGM instructor for 6 years. I could never do it.
