I love how her friends just look at each other like "uhoh looks like someone picked the wrong girl again" like they've seen this scenario before. They are good friends imo.
Ya those friends are so rare esp nowadays 💔
totally! ride or dies they stand by her friend no matter what
I love how at the very beginning of the movie, Elle is already proving to people that she’s not nearly as dumb as people seem to think she is.
I'm of the opinion that what attracts so many people to this movie is not only the story of how she proves she's smart to others. It's also the story of her actually having to discover she's smart as opposed to what her surroundings made her think.
she's smart in her specialties: fashion and beauty. and she's very thorough in that, not just a consumer. she's savvy and it came in handy with her case.
@@Annawa1987but nobody around her doubts her intellect, only those don’t know her and Warner since he’s not very bright himself
Good script writing. Laying the foundation for Elle as a capable, confident women when she knows her stuff and feels comfortable.
Judging book by the cover it seems.
Perfect example of how to write a genuinely likeable female protagonist without making the rest of the cast look bad by comparison.
Also they don’t try to make the whole new feministic “girl boss” who doesn’t need a man, yada yada. She’s smart in many ways, and sure she acts like a stereotype blonde, but she goes beyond that. She uses her expertise in feminine things like the part about the perm, and shows a strength In femininity. I love this movie.
Modern feminist movies are the most anti-female movie there could be. They always think to make a strong female character they need to turn her into someone who can be physically stronger than any man and behave manly and hate on actual feminine strengths like the ability to communicate well or be maternal.🙄 It’s ridiculous.

Truthfully, I think that this is a movie about a girl who, up until she pushes herself, lives in a box that the world tells her she is capable of. This scene is a perfect example of her true self pushing through the barriers, but in an exceptable way in her circle
Gotta disagree. Elle always pushed herself she just chose to be in a world of business, fashion specifically because it was what interested her and what she liked. Just like the theme of the movie you don't have to change who you are to excel and enjoy what you do. Elle just applied her knowledge and abilities in a different field without losing that same power, talent and knowledge.
I think what I like most about this scene is that she shows she has the technical knowledge behind fashion. As a home sewist, I'm still not sure whether what she says here is true or just gibberish invented for the film; but that's kind of beside the point. The point - especially from the point of view of someone who sews - is that fashion as in "following fashion" may be shallow, but fashion as in _the production of clothes_ is a complex subject with expert knowledge. The point is that her interest in her subjects isn't shallow; she dives deep and learns to understand the workings of it. And I love that even this scene pertaining to her "shallow" interests shows there's power in knowledge.
@Pikachu150 She could even still be a lawyer using her fashion major still. Maybe not a prosecutor of defense attorney but she could be a IP lawyer or business attorney
You know what they say.”never judge a book by it’s cover”😊
Elle is smart and hardworking. She just initially devotes her intelligence in diligence to areas that society (and rightfully in some regard) considers to be superficial and less important
This scene shows how Elle’s knowledge of fashion & beauty is valuable. It was valuable here because she saved herself from getting ripped off by that lady, and it was valuable at the end of the movie where she caught Chutney in a lie about washing her permed hair.
What, Chutney lied?!
@@Sdority905 Yep, Chutney falsely claimed she was washing her hair when her father was shot by Brooke, which is why she didn't hear the gunshot. Elle asked her what she had done earlier that day. Chutney said,"I woke up, got a latte, went to the gym, got a perm, and came home." Elle has a look of,"Chutney's lying!" When Chutney says,"Perm."
Elle questions Chutney washing her hair the same day after getting a perm because her curls were still intact because washing your hair the same day after getting a perm would risk deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate which has to stay in permed hair for at least 24 hours.
She even points out a girl named Tracy did a wet T-shirt contest the same day as getting a perm and her curls were ruined. Elle soon screams at Chutney that since her curls were still intact, she was NOT washing her hair (For some odd reason, the trial seemed to take place about a week after Haywood was murdered and not like a year or more later) .
Elle says that she would have had to have found Brooke standing over Haywood's dead body with gun in hand to make her story plausible. Elle then says,"You had plenty of time to hide the gun after you shot your father, didn't you, Chutney?" Chutney says,"I didn't mean to shoot him! I thought it was YOU walking through the door(Pointing at Brooke, Brooke looks shocked) and the crowd gasps and Chutney gasps, covers her mouth and has a look of horror as if thinking,"I can't believe I just confessed that in Court!"
The crowd excitedly chatted in shock and The Judge says,"Order, order!" And bangs her gavel and says,"Oh my God! " Brooke and Elle also said,"Oh my God." The Judge orders the Bailiff to take Chutney into Custody and the Bailiff leads Chutney away as Chutney has a "What have I done and said?" Expression. The Judge dismisses the Brooke Case and tells her she is free to go. The Courtroom erupts into happy applause and Brooke hugs Elle and thanks her.
Outside of Court, a Journalist asks Elle how she knew Chutney was lying. Brooke says,"Because she's brilliant of course." Elle says,"The rules of hair care are finite. Any Cosmo Girl would have known." Some men open a door for her and she thanks them and leaves. 😀
It also tipped her off to Enrique
@@frigginresulrumThat wasn't much of a stretch though.
AWWWWW, FORESHADOWING!
I love this movie so much Reese did such a fantastic job! Elle broke dumb blonde stereotypes. Yeah she’s rich and can act like Barbie but she’s such a sweetheart and is very caring intelligent and compassionate. Not to mention a great friend!❤
Let's also not forget that Barbie has multiple PhD's. How else could she be a vet, lawyer, doctor, astronaut, etc? Barbie is the smartest blonde out there, while also rocking the fashion world.
And intelligent too!
I always thought, that what makes this movie great, is that Elle and her friends are not mean-spirited. They are actually pretty nice and accepting to everyone. You could argue that they are materialistic and shallow, but who isn't at that age.
Not to mention she got a near perfect score on her LSAT
nobody thinks she’s a dumb blonde for being rich, everyone in this movie is rich. a lot of them think she’s poor actually.
Love how she outwitted the sales lady and was super nice while reading her to absolute filth 😂😂
Yes! Then she went about her business like she was never there lol
Be a cooperative component to your own vortex and leave it at that 😊
A Poster on a now deleted video of this scene said something like,"Elle is so nice even when the Sales Woman tried to scam her into buying a dress at full price that was on sale! I would have cussed that Sales Woman out! I need to be more like Elle, assertive, but not aggressive!" 😀
Jealous women are like cockroaches 🪳 Everywhere ⚠️🤬
Ooh. "Read someone to filth" is a fantastic expression, I need to remember that one.
she's also not being a b*tch about it. She just outsmarted her and while being kind. Many people wouldn't do that 😂
It's not exactly my kind of movie but I watched it a few times and I really think it gives a good message.
It's not "she's dumb so she only understands fashion" it's "she's smart but she likes fashion, why is she supposed to do something she doesn't like just to look smart to soothe your fragile ego?"
Both the movie and Reese Witherspoon become more impressive when you find out that all these things we love about it? Are things *Reese Witherspoon* herself forced through. If it had been up to the producers, it'd be a typical shallow romcom.
She may seem like a spoiled and ditzy blonde, but Elle Woods in reality is a smart cookie, especially when it comes to fashion. So if you're trying to scam her by selling her an outdated dress at full price... keep moving. You come up with a fake albi about washing your hair when you just got a perm earlier that day... she'll expose your lies brutally.
Elle Woods is not a girl you mess with. She's got a big heart and a brilliant brains underneath her beautiful blonde locks.
truth!
People underestimated her in the beginning of the movie but she evolved and even made friends that u thought that she wouldn’t have anything to do with in the first place, that shows growth in her favor!
Elle Woods DID have advantage of looking like a “dumb blond”so everyone thought they could fool, trick and take advantage of her.
Also, she’s nice. Like, one of the nicest people in fiction.
The friend we all need! ❤
Even her friends are likeable. They were always supportive
What's funny is that, that's not even the dress she ends up wearing
I wouldn't buy from that store either.
me either
it shows her growth, how she moved on from warren. i didn’t realise this ❤
Well we knew she didn't wear it because she didn't buy it
I believe She might have worn that pink dress again, on one of her dates with Emmett. Maybe when he proposed.
This scene alone shows just how intelligent Elle Woods truly was. She didn't just understand fashion; she understood applicable sciences.
Not only that, but she had an impressive memory, observation, and psychological insight to not only identify deceptive behavior, but counter it. The girl was, in short, a genius.
Elle simply never realized how smart she was, because the world told her she couldn't be.
My mom was a shopper. She didn’t have a lot of money, but she knew Everything
Mine too ❤️
your mom is waaay richer than she thought!
Funnily enough, the dress that she wears to the dinner with Warner is more similar to the one the saleslady offers her. But it also matches the decor of the restaurant. I bet that, like a true uber fashionista, Elle ended up scouting out the restaurant beforehand then picked the best matching dress.
As she should 💥👸🏼
This scene was well done. In one fell swoop they showed that while she has the girly rich girl personality, that is not ALL she is by any means. She isn't a 1 dimensional twit like so many people in the movie want to believe her to be. Even the professor that tries to get in her pants went down because he underestimated her even after finding out she was smart.
That dress of sparkly turquoise sequins is everything my 10 year old self could've dreamed of, lol.
I don't understand whh she didn't buy it.
this movie has such a great message of not allowing other people's negative perceptions of you to bring you down. Stand firm in what you know and who you are, keep shining even when they try to dim your light 💎
I grew up watching this every week with my mum and sister. Every time we get together since my sister moved away we put it on. A bowl of popcorn and many chocolate snacks later we say bye and can’t wait to do it again. Legally Blonde kept my family close. ❤
That is such a lovely and cosy tradition! Love it!!
I love that. I'm not close to my mom or sister so your tradition is something I wish I had ❤
The courtroom scene is 10/10.
"Absolutely. Its one of a kind." 😁😬 - the ladys face 🤣🤣🤣🤣
God, I love this scene so much. It flew over my head as a kid, but it shows just how smart she is and that she has the potential to be anything she wants.

Wow! This flew over your head?
@@Michelle-pn9xt I was around 6 or 7 when I first watched this.
I love that blue dress, she looks like a mermaid
I really like the way they establish that *no* , being blonde and rich doesn't automatically mean that you're dumb. No, not even if you do a synchronized giggle with your besties.
That synchronized giggle the three of them do show how close they are to each other! 🤭 I have a Fictional band named Cake Cream and all five Cake Cream Members do synchronized giggles too! 🤭
Warner is such dumb a**** to dump this beautiful, smart, and iconic queen that is Elle Woods!
His loss. At least we, and more importantly Elle, got a better and far more supportive love interest in Emmett.
Emmett was definitely an upgrade.
He was thinking of the long term plans, how he wanted to become a senator, and how he thought people would judge him as shallow for marrying a sorority blonde. Instead, everyone ends up judging him for being a douche~😁
Warren wanted someone that he could run over but Elle was smart enough to finally see him for what he was a dumb rich boy who wanted to marry rich!
@@alexisgrunden1556 the truth is that his crowd WOULD have judged him for being with Elle. We saw how they DID judge her. If Elle hadn't proven herself, his crowd would have mocked him for being with her. Warner was one of those people who put too much stock in what other people think.
I love 'ohhh' when the salesperson first walks up. Elle already knows she's full of it lol
Interesting scene how she exposes what the saleslady is trying to do. It is bookends the scene in court where she exposes the truth about perms. Elle is a very smart young lady in both her professional and personal life!
“Omigod, omigod, you guys! Elle saw right through that salesgirl’s lies!”
Omigod! Elle Woods, sorry our mistake
Courtney take your break!
Just ignore her she hasn't been well
I love her girlfriends, they are so loyal and supportive, never get jealous! Friendship between women is real!
perfect example of street smart andddd academic smart
I love this movie it proves you can't judge a book by its cover and it comes with laughter as well
This is what I would think Paris Hilton is, someone who is stereotyped - when in reality she’s a smart business woman who has an empire and DJs at the same time.
Well, she definitely remembered that evening. But for very different reasons...
I was once engaged to a 5'8" Wisconsin prom queen cheerleader farmgirl of Norwegian descent. She was just as unforgettable 48 years ago as she is now....
I'm not a girly girl but I love this movie! Do you think Reese ever gets tired of being phenomenal ALL THE TIME??
As people say “Never Judge A Book By It’s Cover”
This shows early on that while Elle may not be conventionally intelligent, she certainly had a much higher intelligence than most expected
I had a prof take this off the list of movies we had to do a costume list for because she said it was "problematic and hasn't aged well" but kept Greece on it... WHAT?
Grease is way older than this.
Somebody get some aloe Vera for that sales lady because she got BURNNNNNNNED.
This scene was very important. You learn very early on that Elle is a very smart and wont be made a fool out of
Who said you can't be hot and smart at the same time?
Are you kidding me, I would call the manager. How is she not fired
A Critic questioned why Elle didn't report Courtney for trying to scam her. A Poster replied something like,"What Elle did was sufficient enough. Make Courtney feel embarrassed for trying to scam Elle.
This is why Legally Blonde is an intellectual classic
This is a movie that always puts a smile on my face and lifts my spirits. I just love it.
She is absolutely precious, always enjoy seeing her movies.🤩🥰
This was equivalent to the Pretty Woman shopping scene “you work on commission, right? Big mistake!”
Yes!!! Came here to say this 😂
That is not the same thing at all. Julia Roberts never said anything to prove her intelligence!
I looove the dress she's wearing in this scene!
Yes honey! Let her know you're NOT a dumb blonde!😍
Since it was "a year ago" it's now classified as "rags".
She should have also called the manager on that shop assistant
Elle is too nice
This is probably one of my favorite character introductions in a film
Elle was born knowing fashion. Since she was little she knew what was best.
she’s always been so smart
Well Elle got degree in fashion, the saleslady definitely pick the wrong girl 😂
Omigod you guys. Elle saw right through that salesgirl’s lies.
Okay, movie crossover idea. Elle goes and works for Miranda Priestly as a legal consultant for Runway magazine. That's a movie I would pay money to watch.
@jaredbaratta8589 good idea for a title. Or how about “The Devil’s Advocate Wears Prada”
I love how Elle's is a flawed character yet very lovable... And throughout the journey she learned and be a better person... My only regret is... Imagine her as someone in fashion industry, like stylist, fashion journalist, trend maker, or like creative director of a fashion house... I cant see her sewing garment... The world would be a better place
It’s funny cuz when I first saw this film, I thought it was gunna be a dumb blonde movie. When this scene showed up I thought “oh here we go. She gonna buy a horrible dress”. But then suddenly she out wits her. And thats when I knew this was gunna be a great film.
this scene is PERFECTION in the musical, do yourself a favor and look it up
When people really turn a joke into a mess for themselves they really show their true colours and the type of fabric
did anyone else notice that when elle was saying “this is THE date” the mirror showed the saleswoman not wearing the scarf she had tied around her neck a split second later?
I really enjoyed this movie.
She didn't suddenly become smart cause she went to Harvard Law and stopped being a Barbie Girl, she's always been smart and graduated while being extra Barbie Girl.
My favorite movie, I can watch it hundreds time but I don't care, I love it!
Never underestimate how much knowledge goes into fashion. New stuff comes out every three months, so it becomes impossible to keep up with the sellers unless you are buying and trying out new stuff constantly and build your knowledge through experience.
You picked the wrong girl. Period 🤣🤣🤣
Mona Lisa Vito : 'Cause Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.
I dated a girl who thought this movie was her life coach. Ironically enough she graduated from Boston University.
My one complain about this movie was the slogan written under the title “going where no blonde has gone before”. If blonde had have been replaced with any other human trait it would have been considered unacceptable.
Go Elle! 💪🏽
I love the blue sequin dress👗 Elle was wearing. I would definitely wear that to a party or someplace else. Blue is my signature color
Same for me and it's suits me very well because I'm a black woman
This is me every time the sales lady tells me that something is on sale when its not :)
Reese Witherspoon was the whole movie of this film that I really enjoyed. And the 2nd one, too, again.
I love this movie!!
This was like the end of the pick me 'cool girl' trope that wasn't like 'other girls' that have always dominated the 90s romantic comedies .
Yeah, I love that Elle embraces and loves just being who she is and that her loving pink isn't a bad thing.
Now I want to go and watch the movie again 😹😹I forgot how smooth she was in sticking it to the sales girl😹😹😹
Theatre ticket performance 😂😂
Haven't watched this in months... thought about this in the car earlier and suddenly it's on my recommended... youtube needs to be subtler with their mind reading tech
People always underestimate a blonde girl. They're not just pretty faces but smart humans too. Don't judge a book by its cover
She wore a different dress to the date though but here in the scene after showing ther saleswoman her place she said " this is it". I thought she was going to wear this dress.
I was never a typical " chick flick " woman, but i loved this film. And i really took to Elle. Totally enjoyable film.❤
All Elle ever wanted is to be her genuine feminine self 💗
Marrying Warner , becoming a supportive wife to his dreams while enjoying her life like she always did .
But life though that she has a brain that deserves so much more than that ...
The best part of this movie is we have this fashion conscious, super feminine woman who is still the smart badass. I can't think of any other movie before this where that combo happened.
Before this movie, women could be badasses only if they were butch, or feminine only if they were helpless.
I love how half the comments here have the word love
As a recovering blonde, I really love this scene.
Everyone from her friends to her family are very superficial but at the same they are her ride or die will back her up 100%.
Yes she broke the blonde stereotype.
Tell it on the Mountain, please
When are sales associates in movies going to learn to treat their customers well??
Like it's a really cool moment but is what the salesperson did even legal? I know you can discount or mark stuff down and get away with it because "customer service" but that's the opposite of that and since she's presumably not a manager, I have no idea how she'd keep her job. It's basically stealing because she directly profits from the commission.
Probably not! And that B***h SHOULD be fired!
Love Reese in the movie!
Another rude saleslady scene.. haha it reminds me of one in "Pretty Woman" hahaha
If I were her, I wouldn't buy that dress in that shop after she tried to rip me off.
Possibly, but that's how some people's lives are& what's important is the positive change that occurs & strengthens her. 🌟🌟
Someone can be stuped, but if someone knows that person is stuped and wants to use it, that means that someone is a bad person.
OH MY GOD
OMIGOD YOU GUYS!!
L saw right though that’s sale girls lies
Previewing her interrogation skills
great scene from the movie!!!
Literally Kim k trying to be her😂
This scene doesnt really show her intelligence. At best it shows thats super into fasion.
It still shows her intelligence because she understood the sale lady wanted to scam her
