try doing that with a trailer and load behind and you will struggle you need more power.
Great, easy to understand presentation. I just got an electric bike and knew little about these techniques. This is off subject, but I would urge all bicyclists, motorcyclists and ebikers to be extremely aware of just how hard it is for people in regular motor vehicles to see you if you wear black, gray or dull colored helmets and clothing. This is especially true at night and when weather conditions make things even less visible. Your hip, black outfit won't look so cool when you are sprawled out bleeding on the pavement. Light colors, (safety orange or yellow are best) vests and helmets are essential as are proper front and rear lighting and reflective clothing for night riding. Do that, and you will likely see a decrease those scary close call interactions with cars that we all experience sooner or later.
This is a really stupid question hansg6336 and I know the "invention called the internet and your own state law..." sometimes it's best just to ask someone, is my experience.
Suddenly I want to splurg; just go for it and by an E-bike. I live in Washington state where apparently, a certain class of Ebikes are legal on sidewalks.
In your state (whichever) in practice as opposed to the law, are pedestrians wary/angry when ebikes go on sidewalks?
I ask as my town has a terrible, terrible safety record in terms of bike and motorcyle accidents because of poor drivers (in cars). If the inside story is yeah, certain classes of bikes are legal on sidewalks, generally, but everyone hates cyclists who do, it's probably not worth it.
Just curious if you have any thoughts?

"Decent shape" and "Major hills" are obviously subjective terms.
I have a decades long history with long-distance/endurance cycling....so l'm planning to use my new E-Bike for routine riding (like getting groceries or commuting)... but to really stay fit: my beloved roadbike will continue to still see plenty of road time.
I will be interested in seeing how new riders with E-bikes do with their fitness goals. I anticipate that the E-Bike "throttle" will tend to thwart fitness efforts for a lot of riders: BUT it is also true that any increase in physical activity for most people (especially those that have become more and more sedentary over time) is still a "win-win" situation for their over-all lifestyel: and fitness levels.
As a health-care professional: l am eager to eventually review the data that will be generated with E-Bike use by more and more E-bike users and enthusiasts.
As a fan of "Mother Earth" and an ecology activist since the '60s: l am wishing for healthy gains in global ecology heath as well.

Use max assist for head winds, loads, hills and to travel long distances. Use mild assist to get used to riding but you’re giving your body a treat by riding with minimal assist.
I recently learned how to ride a bike as an adult. Now mind you, I'm not accustomed to riding a bike, so I'm not in good shape at all. Tried pedaling up a hill on a regular bike, nearly died. So I decided I'm gonna get an ebike because my city has LOTS of hills like that, and I don't want to collapse on the side of the street like that again.
Im 6'4" and this bike fits me perfectly. I'm also 380lbs and it holds my weight ...

I have a pedal assist bike only with no throttle. I have an 8 speed shift. I have some major hills before I get home. I put it in the highest assist electrically and pedal in 8th gear before the hill , to get momentum. As I'm going up the hill, my pedaling becomes slower so I down shift to 7 then 6 then 5 then 4, etc. I never have to get off and walk. This helps me greatly! I hope this helps.
I’m 45 years young lol and I’ve had my E-Bike for 10 weeks now and it took a month to get used to it and since then I’ve never gone higher than level 2 on pedal assist and it saves battery life immensely. I can do 30 miles or 3 hours on one battery. I’ve put over 750 miles on it since I started riding again and having a blast!! I’m in the 180lb range and I rarely ever use the throttle until the end of my ride just for fun. This guy is only 40lbs heavier so I don’t think that’s a fair comparison per say. It all really depends on the preference of the way you actually ride versus what this video shows.

I started out with a normal mountain bike. But since my Tennessee town has more hills than Hank from King of the Hill. I decided to get a TotGuard 500W/48V for pulling large hills in full EV mode. Hope it works ok. I’m 5’ 9”, 160 LBs. I nearly died from using the regular bike.

Hills are meaningless unless the slope is given in Degrees or Percent. With a 160 pound rider on a conventional bicycle it takes approximately 800 watts to go up a 20% grade. I live in Costa Rica and we have plenty of grades 20 to 35%. My driveway is 20%
I use a 1200 watt e-scooter called a RAM Mia. Throttle only I can do 38 KPH on a 20t o 21% grade. Very near the posted 40 KPH Speed Limit.
Simply get a Clinometer app for your cellphone and mount is at a Zero degree starting point. I find the apps made for off road vehicles are best.
Until just over a year ago I managed with a steel frame mountain bike to 30% grades. I weigh 183 pounds and am 76 years old. And more recently found I need some additional assist
Actually this is perfect because almost NO ONE knows what the heck the % grade of hills are or even what the number means. Showing the hill is good for everyone to learn

The seat was too low - not good for your knees or for max efficiency.
If you raise your seat up , it will make it easier to cycle

Ive watched your videos just after I purchased my ebike and between then and now (7 months later) I've learnt that in order to save your battery life os to use pedal assist.
It's unbelievable how far one can fo on a fully charged battery.
The owners manual of my bike suggests 90 - 110 kilometer per full charge... I've gone almost 150 km simply because I use pedal assist.
My bike has permanent pedal assist feature built into it. I have walk assist as well but why have walk assist when you're supposed to be riding it.

Stupid question: what's the difference between Pedal Assist 5 and Full Throttle?
I happen to have a Jetson bolt pro ebike where I live happens to be hilly that by using the pedals and the throttle at the same time they actually do make throwing up the hill a lot better.
You will find it a lot easier if you pedal with the ball of your foot and not the instep (as the rider is doing). A simple, cheap and effective addition to your bike are a pair of nylon/plastic toe clips - without straps.
I agree and would also raise the seat height. The seat is too low.

Where I live is realatively flat but to get to the other side of town I must go up and over the freeway so the hill starts abruptly and you have to stop for the on ramp and off ramp how should i tackle this issue?

I live up in a mountain. The climb is 1.5 miles uphill at around 35 degree incline. I am learning how to ride a bike with 21 gears and electric. It is hard but I weight 145 pounds only. Problem is, I have to ride with my kid (another 55 pounds). The balancing up and down the hill is already hard so I thought an electric trike would be better. But people keep saying a 250w motor on a trike is not enough for that kind of climb. Any recommendations? Maybe a kid's car in the back would be better?
So you would take into account your weight plus your child's weight and the weight of anything you'd be towing and research how much power you'll need with that total weight. So from the weights here you and your child have a total weight of 200 pounds. So you'll need a motor capable of moving that weight up a steep hill.
From your demo, it would seem that rear gearing is not essential if PAS is robust enough. In other words, a single-speed ebike with a strong motor might be all you need. The PAS levels would substitute for the gears. Is this accurate?

we are not allowed throttle in the UK, only allowed pedel assist by UK law plus only 15.5 miles per hour max
Yeah but l have one, coppers dont even look, l thumb throttle the hill iif its really steep but my 500w illegal motor in normal mode or sport flies up the hills and where l live its all steep hills, l had a hip replacement just last year and no hard pushing peddles for this 67 year old, city dwellers may get police attention but most people l know whove upped their modes have never been bothered by the fuzz, theres legislation studies been done on doubling the 250w to 500w and allowing a throttle but still only 15.5mph which to me is fine. Go aany faster and youre in moped or motorbike country with plates, insurance lience etc, 500w and throttle helps smooth out the hills which is what most people want they need to make them more wantable if they truly want cars off the road
thanks your great show! agree batteries & e-motors are damage & die fast in low speed even for 1000w hubs. suggest mid-drive system because has build in 2.5 gearbox, that will double e-motor speed in a efficient range. a big 1000w hub might be priced close to a 250w mid-drive bike and won't be damaged in uphills

I drive the monster 72 volt. And it has huge tires. I find that weaving from side to side helps.

I just done 180 km bike ride on my ebike most of time when I got to
the hill I turn the electric motor on but it failed to kick in a lot of the time it's left me with a heavy bike going uphill what was I doing wrong should I stop at the bottom of the hill turn the electric on then ride it up I am doing a 160km ride with my road bike because I don't want to have the same problem with my ebike
I can't speak to the ebike you have, but with our motor you can leave it on but put it in 0 when you enter the hill, so the motor won't be engaged but it is turned on. Then when you start the ascent you click to level 1, 2, 3 etc as you need it to climb. We haven't heard of problems trying to ascend a hill with that approach.

Hi. I have a bluespark Ancheer bike I recently purchased. I've been riding mountain bikes since around year 2000. I used to do the crazy stuff until I had to get a hip replacement, now I mostly ride road and trails on my bike.
Anyways when I bought this it came with cheap plastic pedals, cheap seat and coil forks. I took my rockshocks Reba forks from my 29er and replaced the coil forks. They work great on this 27.5. I replaced the seat and pedals as well. I noticed at top speed the motor will over power my pedaling. So what I'm about to try now is changing the front gear set from a 42 tooth sprocket to a 48 tooth sprocket. I'll update this later to let you know how it does. But I wanted to post this to let others know you can upgrade your ebike with better components

I have hill near home so i guess going full throttle wouldn't ruin it for me. Cause I'm near home. That's the worst hill on my usual route.

@@sixthreezero Yeah in my country a $1,000 - $2,000 ish is equivalent to 100,000 php or 200,000 php ish, so it's feels so overwhelming since not a lot of people have that kind of money here, so instead they sell Ebikes at the price of $800 - $700 ish which is equivalent of 20,000 php or 40,000 php. Since it's not easy for us to earn that kind of money of course buying a Ebike is difficult, difficult as trying to buy a car or a motorcycle.
But thank you for hoping maybe someday I can buy it.

Yes you can use the throttle while pedaling. I do it a lot when riding up hills to make sure the motor is at all full power.
The hills where I live are much steeper. I have to get off and push and use the throttle to help the bike move up the hill. 😂
I carry 2nd battery not letting battery get lower than 1/2 . Possibly another option to put a sprocket set with better hill climbing more teeth .
When it comes to me I’m looking for what I call an Apartment Ebike. I live in a small city/town. In a old converted school building now apartments. I have a long flight of stairs to climb and descend in order to get outside. My town also has its fair share of hills. On the bright side to do errands like say shopping or doctor visits it’s usually not that long a trip. In fact my longest trip to a neighboring town to visit family is 16 miles round trip. Thus at 60 my priority list is weight (Not as strong as I used to be) Hill climbing ability. Range with speed being the very least of my concerns as if it’s faster than walking I’m ahead of the game:). Presently I’m looking at the Qualisports Nemo. The reviews I’ve seen seem to indicate it’s not a great bike but not a terrible one either. Price is right. Features seem to mix well with my needs. Company and bike model has been around for a few years etc. If you’ve other suggestions id like to hear them as I’m an amateur and it seems like the Wild West out there for Ebikes and other devices right now.

what is the specs of the bike you're driving?
It is a 500w motor with 10.4ah battery.
What happens with PAS when you were on full throttle?
When you are using full throttle the pedal assist stops, but you can keep pedaling while you are engaging the throttle. It will more or less just be like you are using pedal assist if you pedal while engaging the throttle.
what grade was that hill
This really is a great video ! so from another comment we know this is a 500 Watt motor. I'd like to know what the MAX pedal assist was on this bike in the video, was it level 5 ? which is the max ? I'm asking because some eBikes have PAS that goes to level 9. Thanks very much for your time !
Thanks for watching and great question! Our e-bikes max at level 5. Using pedal assist on level 5, you can reach a top speed of 28 mph (on level ground).
500w w/ 5 level PAS = 500w w/ 9level PAS
It is only the division of power option.
