    Omg thank you SO much for posting this! I'm 5ish months into doing women's hairdressing at college and having a major crisis of confidence today. This video made me feel SO much better (had a bit of a "remember this for next time" moment today). I'm also totally into doing colour, I love it and I just know it somehow. But cutting scares the bejesus out of me! It's really nice to know it'll get better. So thank you

    Yes! Part 2! I'm graduating in February too🤗 I can't decide if I should assist or just work in a chain to get some experience first. I really kind of just want to get practice at doing hair. It's so tough. I almost wish I could assist at 1 salon and work an hourly doing hair at a 2nd salon but I know that won't be allowed. Do you have any advice? I eventually want to do bridal updos and barbering. I think I'm going into Barber school after I graduate COS.

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 роки тому +1

      I always think assisting is a good idea, but especially if you want to specialize in something more specific. In a chain salon I believe you'd mostly be doing cuts and basic colors, which is definitely a great way to get your hands on as many heads as possible if you really feel like you need more hands on practice. But I think if you can get an assisting job at a really nice established salon, that can put you a step ahead! :)

    Hi! So I'm looking into Cosmetology School and am really excited to start. I have the option of taking classes at a college or at an actual beauty school. I'm skeptical about the college because I'm not sure if they have the hands on approach that the beauty school does. Your thoughts would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    • @Boudicaisback
      @Boudicaisback 4 роки тому +1

      The college might be better honestly. I looked into going to a community college beauty school but instead im going to Paul Mitchell The School. Alot of these big named schools are "for profit" so basiclly education comes second and making money for the school as a salon comes first. Sure you get alot of experience and hands on training , and that's educational but i wish we spent more time in the classroom going in depth into things and learning new techniques instead we "make discoveries " on real people. Im expected to pay for color if i even want to practice on my doll head. Choose your school wisely!!!

      Hi! I just wanted to say that I just started the cosmetology program at my local community college (I'll finish my 3rd week tomorrow, so very new). But, we will definitely be getting lots of hands on time in our school. We have a salon floor area in our school & classrooms as well. We only spend one semester in our little classroom learning before they put us out on the salon floor. But, I would recommend going to the college's you're interested in & doing a tour. That way you can get a feel for how the programs work & figure out what school might be best for you. I wish you the best of luck & hope you find a school you love!

    Europian here. How long do you go to beauty school? And is there like a class salon? Because here in Switzerland it's 3 years full time; One day a week in school for all the theory stuff and four days in an actual salon.

    • @kkingkaila
      @kkingkaila 4 роки тому +1

      In America it varies from State to state but usually it's between 1 and 2 years! And usually after you finish a certain amount of hours, you start taking clients and do some class time either once a week or in the morning or whatever. It all depends on the school and the state

  • @kitkatt007

    Hi Sam! I love watching your videos and I've learned a lot. Perhaps a video you could do is to inform us non hairdressers of lingo? I think a lot gets miss-communicated between stylist and client because the client takes one meaning as something else. Like what do you consider as top and bottom, what are highlights vs. low lights, explain different cuts etc. Just a thought!

  • @Phoenixpaigexo
    @Phoenixpaigexo 4 роки тому +1

    You probably don't remember responding back to me in August but I commented saying I start beauty school in September and omg on Friday it will be 5 months since I started, Im half way through. I graduate June 24th. Your videos have helped me sooooooooo much. I have so many questions lol I'll try ask more next time but main question IS. How were you will roller sets ? I'm nervous for my government exam, we only have 30 minutes to do it. Oh yeah my school's different as well. I feel like I was kind of thrown to the wolves. Were in the classroom for 2 months and on the floor for the whole 8 months SO I been on the floor for 3 months now and what are some tips on bringing in more clients.

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 роки тому +1

      Ooh you're almost there!! I was never really a big fan of roller sets and I really lucked out because we don't have a practical part to the state board exam in my state anymore, so after we learned them, I was able to kind of avoid doing them. But we had to wrap perms A LOT. So I'd say just practice it as much as you can at home or if you ever have free time at school, and time yourself and try to get faster and faster. That's what I did with perms and foils and I was able to increase my speed significantly. And as for bringing in clients, promote yourself on social media, every time a client comes in to you, tell them that you need more clients and would love if they tell their friends and family about you. You can even make some cheap business cards to hand out, or if the school has business cards, just write your name on them and hand those out.

    Hey Sam have you thought about doing a keratin treatment again? Also, since you’re a stylist do you know if you can take the keratin treatment system you want to use and ask your hair stylist to use it on you?

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 роки тому

      Now that my hair is really healthy, I don't have any desire to do another keratin treatment. And no, I wouldn't recommend that. Maybe some stylists would do that, but most won't for liability reasons. They're supposed to only be purchased by professionals anyway, so we can't guarantee a product unless we purchase it ourselves. That would be like going into a restaurant and bringing you own food with you and asking the cook to heat it up for you lol

    Oooo boy. My friend went to Aveda in Minneapolis, and I was a model for one of her classmates for a perm. No one had her do a strand test (they were super early into their schooling), and my hair had been lightened so many times prior. I ended up getting a ton of hair chopped off that night because it just damaged and crumpled, didn't hold the curls. I then went back to the advanced students to get a cheap haircut to get the rest of the brillo pad hair completely cut off. I can't imagine if my hair had actually melted off damn
