Something I didnt expect was doing unpaid demos on a hair model and/or shadow shifts before being put on payroll.

I agree with you fully. I only did color bc that's all I wanted to do, so I worked in a chain salon. It ended up making me hate doing hair bc of the money making.. Get them in and out asap. I never went to college but ended up being a receptionist after that and will continue to do office jobs lol

Im so Glad I Found you I also live in pa and im also a cosmetologist since 2014 the only thing is that i am not working as a cosmetologist since years. I am a stay home mom I have 3 kids as you can see im super busy all the time and i dont have no one that can take care of the kids But i wanna go back to work as a hairstylist im just afraid Im going to start all over again like a new recently graduate cosmetologist if you see this comment please any advise. thank god i live in NY so maybe when i eventually can be a hairdresser i may get more money than you have gotten cuz rent is expensive and right out of school i wanna move out and be independent
If you don’t mind me asking how old are you?? I went to cosmetology school right out of high school and I’m 23 now and I just found a good salon after I’ve had 3 duds before! Glad I can relate to you on that.

Isn't it fun how you can get a degree or license and still have to work numerous jobs to afford food, much less rent? 😒 The constant struggle has me feeling very cynical.
It's pretty awful. It's just a cycle of bullshit, but I just remind myself that I'm not alone and hopefully things will work themselves out eventually.
Just like with any new graduate. Entry level is pretty basic until you get enough experience to work somewhere that you get paid better.

I’m in such a rut 😭 I’ve been out of school for about 8 months I feel like so unmotivated people are nice but also so rude sometimes, I’m tired, people throw their emotional baggage on me even when I try redirecting conversation, I work so much and not making much money 😭 can u make an update video on how you feel?

You sound like me we are hair family's .you were telling the truth thats why i sub you.
That's the thing about training as a stylist as soon as your qualified you have to find clients and suffer bad health issues and the money is awful starting out as a new stylist it takes years of extra courses and experience to really make money from it there are other trades that pay good money

Where in pensalvaina are you my sister in law lives near Trenton im from uk and it’s nice but you do have to drive miles to get anywhere. They asked me & my husband to move to us but being a hairdresser my self it’s hard work to start again.
Make a video about your corporate job and why you left
What do your business cards look like? I've been wanting to make some but I'm new to the industry and not completely sure what should be on there.
My boss makes ours so that they all go together and look the same - but have your name relatively big, your title (either just hair stylist, or hair and makeup artist, color specialist, etc.) the name of your salon, the salon's phone number and address (I don't suggest giving out your personal number because people will constantly be blowing up your phone), and all of your social media where you feature your work.

Aw, thank you! Of course I have, but you need money to move to a big city first lol. And honestly, I feel like I'm over city life. I like being in a quieter more low key area right now.

Caregiving part time is a good second job while getting enough clients.
I'm about to drop out of school as it's just not for me and the reality is it's very hard to stand up for 8 hours at school and work..im 40 years old and now I'm about to pay off 19,000 that I don't have lol yea true shit
It's honestly such bullshit that education is so expensive in this country, because if you don't end up absolutely loving what you choose to go to school for, you're basically screwed unless you're fortunate enough to come from a family with money. Yet, how are you supposed to know if you're truly going to like doing something until you actually try it?! Really frustrating, so I feel your pain.
And this is why apprenticeships should be allowed to count for hours in every state. I hear of this all the time people going $20k in debt for nothing. Nothing to show for-it. That’s crazy to me.

There is no yes or no answer to those questions because it varies greatly.
It can. But realistically probably 75% of cosmetology students either drop out or don’t stick with it long enough after graduation to be successful. And She’s right you really do have to deeply love the craft to make it in this business.
Do you think chain hair salons offer benefits? And do you think since theyre always busy theyre more financially dependable?

How did you say no to a solon you were offered a job while assisting or shadowing
In my case, it was easy, because they knew from the very beginning that I lived far away and was only working there because it was close to my school. But some salons may only want to hire you or let you shadow if you plan on working there as a stylist, because otherwise they're kind of giving all of their secrets. Just be honest from the beginning though.

Most cosmetology programs include hair, skin and nails but it varies by state. :)
