- I decided to have some fun in the studio with Alladson Barreto (one of my Nutcracker Cavaliers - see him in Vlogmas!). We started working on the Act 3 Don Quixote Wedding Pas de Deux just for fun. This was our first rehearsal, so it's FAR from perfect. But I'm always happy to show you all the process! (I hate those double a la second turns). Plus - this is always great for me to work on the classics as I was not trained to dance them! Enjoy!

Hi I'm Kathryn!
I am a former soloist with the New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet. When I was a young student, I was always looking for insights into the ballet world and how to improve my dancing as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. Now that I am a professional, it is my turn to share.

It was beautiful to watch you both dance and it's so nice to see how a practice goes, dancing a piece "just for fun". I don't know the Don Quixote ballet that well but I also enjoyed the music and choreography so I'm gonna do some research on that :D

Oh my, that was very impressive, Katy! That was definitely a Principal performance! Your partner is very handsome (from what I could see), and he took very good care of you . . . very good partner work from the both of you. It is beyond exciting to be able to watch these videos . . . of everything that goes on behind the scenes before and after performances, as well as actual performances. I love getting snippets of dancers waiting for their entrances and then running offstage afterwards. I danced many moons ago for a local ballet company (I was the tall girl in the back). Snowflakes and Flowers Rule! 😂 In fact, Violette Verdy was the rep from NYCB who came down to our studio in Ft. Worth to observe auditions for SAB. To my unexperienced eye this looked amazing!
How does learning a choreography work without a choreographer? Do you watch a video so you know what it's supposed to look like and then try to recreate that? I always wondered about that when you talked about receiving video to learn roles last minute.
Yes! We both know this pas de deux just being "in the business" but we watched a video to get a consistent version.

So beautiful! And there’s so much to praise from both dancers! Don Q is one of my favorites, for the dancing and for the music used here in particular. I often return to watch a video of one of my absolute favorite dancers (truly one of the G.O.A.T., in my humble opinion), Sylvie Guilleme, and there’s also a really interesting video of a practice session for this ballet and Sylvie here on UA-cam. I highly recommend it because, well, I love rehearsals! I'm also an equestrian and you will more often find me sitting next to the warm-up ring instead of ringside at the main event because so much can be learned in what is said between a trainer and their student, regardless of ones level of accomplishment. But, I digress...Bravo!! I hope to see you dance in person. 🙂

Props to you for doing this while wearing a mask. I also have to wear one during ballet class and it’s of course the right thing to do but it makes it a lot harder, I personally am really struggling to breathe. 💕🩰😷👍🏻

As someone who whacked her shin on a locker room bench the other day because her face mask cut off the lower part of her vision, I really commend you for being able to dance and partner while wearing one! And nothing says "ballet in 2021" like having your tutu get caught on your face mask. : )
