I have two checklist boxes, a standard on on my sim and a lighted one in my SR-20. they are very helpful for awareness and quick to see if something has been checked or not.

Here's a good tip: always carry some ginger in the airplane and give everyone a small piece to chew - one for you too. In almost all cases it will prevent motion sickness.

Really love seeing your son interested in flying. It might be cool to see vids training him. My grandfather owned Amelia Earharts training aircraft and eventually crashed it near Santa Paula airport in the 70’s. He took me up many times in various planes and let me fly. I was hooked. Alas I turned 18, bought a boat and sailed it 20 years and regret not staying with flying. Keep that kid interested in flying and doing what it takes to stay in the cockpit.

(and its true, if it'll fit in a six, she'll fly!!! ;-) We had a GREAT trip, but I must have heard Uncle Brian 1500 times ;-) Great memories!!! (And I sure do miss my father...) Chaucer, I’m sorry your dad and his audience didn’t understand your question. To answer it correctly this time, since I think you didn’t want to offend your dad by telling him “duh” when he answered it was for phonetic alphabet reasons, the reason they use the word “foxtrot” which sounds goofy, is because back in Ancient Times (sic) when radio was just becoming a “thing” for air to ground communication, the phonetic alphabet needed a word that was clearly an “f” word that could be understood on the radio. And so they chose “foxtrot” because in that Ancient time :-) there was a dance called “Foxtrot”, which was sweeping the nation and the world. It was an iconic reference to American culture like “baseball”, that everyone around the world had at least heard of. So it became the best candidate for the letter “f” because of its widespread recognition around the world - whereas I think they were hard pressed at the time to come with a better “f” word that non English speakers could parse and understand as easily. Hence the dance “The Foxtrot” was memorialized as the official international radio name for the letter “f”! You’re welcome. Next time, don’t be shy to tell your dad or anyone, “thanks, but that wasn’t what I was asking. I meant, why ‘foxtrot’ in particular? It’s a weird word I had never heard til now. What is the deal? Why not ‘Frank’ or ‘Finance’ or literally any other normal word? What a strange one to pick. Please explain the context behind its being chosen? Thanks.”
P.S. Your dad told the SAR Watch folks that you were 5 POB, but we can’t see anyone else besides you, your mom, and I guess it’s your brother way in the back. Do you have another sibling who was just behind you or two rows behind you that everyone else watching assumed was an empty seat? I’d feel dejected if I was that fifth human who remained unacknowledged by the other commenters who seem to assume it’s just the ones they could see. Tell them I said it’s ok. It’s your dad’s fault for not just quickly introducing everyone before getting on board.

Likewise, our family used to go out to Wewak over Christmas in the late 60s early 70s., we also holidayed in Madang once too. Some of us had our father's love of flying and we'd encourage him to find all of the turbulence! My mother hated flying so if she was on board the flying would be smooth as, without her it was always more fun. My father was an ex RNZAF instructor and aerobatics champ. No wonder you need a checklist, you have so many instruments and switches. I remember there being far less in the Cessna 185s and 206s. The heat and humidity on the coast was always a shock after the highlands lovely climate.

My true vacations actually involve me being out of state I only drive to Montana everywhere else I fly. Personally I would fly to Montana but I don't want to be stuck without a car and it cost more to rent a car than it does to fly.

Props (no pun intended) to mom for letting the future pilot take the co-pilot's seat.
