We have METAphysics, METAmorphosis. Beyond physics, beyond the form, METAgame, beyond the game. The wiki is "meta". This video is "meta". They are extrapolations and derivatives of said game. THE "meta" simply refers to discussions on how the game should be played. Another example, card games. Only the rules and cards exist in its space. If you are thinking about your opponents deck as what you see in front of you, that is the game. If you are thinking about what your opponent COULD bring, that's the "meta". There are no "good" or "bad" YuGiOh decks, the rules don't specify that. The community surrounding the game, and the decks it plays, defines the "meta".

9:39 - this is what playing runescape used to be like when you were clueless and unguided you'd simply spot people doing something, and do that too to see what it was that they were doing
That's literally how I started playing RuneScape back in the day. Went to the library to do a school assignment and saw some kids playing it and kept just watching them without saying anything just memorized by it 😂😂 then went over to a computer and signed up and started playing. Ah the good ol days 😂
You’ve inspired me to start an Ironman. I had the same issues as you. If it wasn’t the most efficient method I’d feel bad and just not do it. I’m now having a blast on my Ironman. Every little win feels amazing.
Ironmen suffer the same issue if you spend too much time planning out your progression. There are guides written to get your ironmen into raids-level gear asap or guides written to max asap. Just step by step "do this task for 100 hours" and if you follow the steps you will eventually max or get full BIS gear. If you hang around on OSRS discords or reddit then people always to push you towards specific things like I see ironmen green log perilous moons and comments are like "thats a waste of time you can get better gear doing this instead" and eventually ends up referencing some 100 page linear guide for ironmen progression Basically stay away from social media, do whatever you enjoy, and the whole idea of efficiency is irrelevant. Ironman doesn't change that fact. You think it does because you're not really researching ironman specific strategies. If you play a main without researching main specific strategies then you won't feel bothered by efficiency either
The real nostalgia for me is watching you have to manually plan out things outside the game. I didn't use excel mind you, but having to write personal notes is something that's so rarely necessary anymore. Love the series.
You technically went META for Barrows, but only because you had the brains to look up the info on the enemy with the Lunar Book and prepare for it. Good job!
Totally agree with the intro, I recently started a new account with my own made up rules to force myself to do more content instead of just buying the optimal tools from the GE and it's so much more fun.
That's the ironman experience. I play it with the wiki and googling - While I will do optimal methods if it's not too much trouble, part of the ironman experience is figuring out how do stuff with limited resources. For example, don't need antivenoms for vorkath. Or don't want to spend 1k prayer potions at barrows? Learn face tanking strats (or the better alternative).
Man I can’t tell you how much I love your intro, seriously. It’s like a Pavlov’s reflex for me at this point and I feel great every time I hear it because I know good content is coming.

@@omegahaxors9-11 Also, it's just flat-out wrong. When people call something the meta, that doesn't mean it's the most effective thing. It means it's the thing most players are doing. No, sniper is better than Demo in the vast majority of situations and players know this, yet demo is still the meta just because way more people play demo than sniper in MvM.

I love it when I log in and do a clue or just kill time doing something random like castle wars or a barrows run. Once I have to start getting serious and find an efficient way to do something it feels like I have to do it, like I have to work my job in real life. Love the series as always
You really have a point with what you've said in the intro. I also lost my fun to the game on my "main" account quite a while ago for the same reasons as you mentioned. Then I started fresh from the beginning with an iron man account and even after a few years now I enjoy every second of it. Restrictions are the key to have a good time in this game (my opinion).
I totally respect your non-meta playstyle, because I feel the same most of the time. As an ironman I ”have to do my farm runs” and I ”have to do my bird house runs” otherwise I’m not *efficient*! That feeling alone has made me bank stand and log out. The best way for me has been to just accept that I enjoy more slow-paced grinds that I can sort of come up with on the spot. Not thinking about the meta has changed my feeling about the game.
The scrying ball for the Theatre of Blood reminds me of gnomecopters back in the day- it was really cool to get a glimpse of endgame areas as a new player, so maybe that's part of the motivation for adding it, as a way to indicate what players can possibly expect if they stick with the game.
The process you described at the beginning of this video explains why a lot of people quit playing. that's why I did, that's why a number of old friends played. spend more time in the wiki thinking about how to play the game, rather than just playing.
This is how I played my first time. I was walking across the entire map to use certain NPCs. I didn’t realize I had a home teleport for 90 hours. Trying to out farm the copper/iron bots and getting tilted. Being given rune plate gear to realize I’ve completed 3 quests. Truly magical experience 😂
For me I get bored if I don’t have something to do. I like knowing where i need to go and what I need to do. I like making progress and that’s how I have the most fun playing the game, not necessarily peak efficiency, but just as fast as I can go.
Effectively having fun, effectiveness has 2 edges, one is the best option avaible, 2nd is best option avaible depending what does the work, ye many forget the human factor, or fun factor sometimes.
Using magic essence potions is a stand-in for magic potions to cast spells above my level when mind bombs weren't enough because they're so much cheaper and more enjoyable to make than the magic and super magic potions were. I love those things.
I genuinely don't know how he'll reach 70 for that quest. Herblore is brutal on an iron even if you know the optimal strategy - which involves constantly farming herbs throughout the account process which he is NOT doing. I suppose 70 is doable with his methods though - hopefully they don't release a quest with 80 herb requirememt like RS3 has
What a grind for Snapdragons! Looks like its because they go into high demand potions that they deliberately kept them from being too common. Still, what a cracked rng you got. At least you got the herblore for essence potions, since you clearly know what its for from your editing comment. Was stoked to see this pop up on my Saturday morning.
There is so much stuff i do inefficiently. I play Runescape to relax, last thing i wanna do is make it a job. Ive tried most methods in the game, and its been awesome!
yeah id have to disagree with that one. Spending 20 hours looking for a super niche item isn't fun. Doing quests without a guide for the first time is fun but not an entire whole account
it varies. The important thing is to stop worrying so much about being optimal and focusing more on goals. Like some other people are mentioning, imagine if Alien didn't remember the herb from the jungle potion. How is he supposed to figure that out? Frankly speaking, the ability to google things usually improves your experience if you engage with it in a healthy way. Having to run between a quest objective and the bank 5 times instead of once (at the start of the quest) is not engaging content. The engaging content is actually doing the quest. Now maybe you decide "I'll look at the items required but I won't use the step-by-step guide I'm completely stuck." IMO, it's fun having to engage with various different kinds of content instead of grinding the same select few money makers for 500 hours. That's why I play ironman. And even know I heavily use the wiki, it's not like I always do the most efficient grinds. I made well over 20k fire battlestaves for zenyte crafting grind. You know what kind of grind that is for an ironman? -Kill lobstrosities for seaweed spores -Grow giant seaweeds -Burn giant seaweeds for soda ash -Mine sandstone at the sandstone grinder -Make molten glass -Blow into unpowered orbs -Get 60K cosmic runes - I bought 20k from wildy rune shop, decided it wasn't good enough, then got several thousand pure essence from temple trekking and runecrafted 20k cosmic runes, and then finished sote and bought another 20k from the priff rune shop. -Power fire orbs -World hop at lunar isle to buy 5 stock battlestaves and nature runes. -Make fire battlestaves and high alch when I ran out of money. I did that because I didn't have money. I got 20-30m cashstack, 90+ crafting and 90+ magic, as well some runecrafting levels from that grind. Took like a month of playing a lot. Looking stuff up turns 1 hour quests into 20 minutes and 10 hour grinds into a 1 hour grinds. Another prime example - Killing unicorns for unicorn horns is very slow. The significantly better option is doing creature creation minigame - Which is basically dead content. Great content for ironman however. The "must be efficient" trap is only as harmful as you let it be.
I think meta comes from the concept of "metagaming" in role playing games, which refers to using information from outside of the game that your character wouldn't have access to in order to gain an advantage in game. But given this series is about not using outside information it's still very fitting to say you're playing without it.
I love your videos! I recently got a snapdragon drop and it made me laugh and think of you 😂 definitely didn’t expect it from the monster I was fighting though lol 😂

The scrying ball for the Theatre of Blood reminds me of gnomecopters back in the day- it was really cool to get a glimpse of endgame areas as a new player, so maybe that's part of the motivation for adding it, as a way to indicate what players can possibly expect if they stick with the game.
Dude, I love your spreadsheets! That is playing runescape RIGHT
trying to 3 tick with a grimy herb. you really have no idea! Love it and the videos btw
The process you described at the beginning of this video explains why a lot of people quit playing. that's why I did, that's why a number of old friends played. spend more time in the wiki thinking about how to play the game, rather than just playing.
Another work of art, keep up the quality videos man!
Always a good day when I see you’ve made another video man, keep it up :)
Gratz on completing the quest! Herblore is no joke on an iron. Now have fun with the 70 req in the future... XD
This is how I played my first time. I was walking across the entire map to use certain NPCs. I didn’t realize I had a home teleport for 90 hours. Trying to out farm the copper/iron bots and getting tilted. Being given rune plate gear to realize I’ve completed 3 quests. Truly magical experience 😂
when you forgot your ghostspeak amulet I felt that in my soul, we've all been theree
@25:53 was that a subtle reference Takeshi’s Castle? If so, I didn’t realise you were a man of such esteemed culture. Cheers 🥂
Using magic essence potions is a stand-in for magic potions to cast spells above my level when mind bombs weren't enough because they're so much cheaper and more enjoyable to make than the magic and super magic potions were. I love those things.
"I'm sure it will get higher in the future, I'll probably need it for another quest"
*Laughs in SotE*
I genuinely don't know how he'll reach 70 for that quest. Herblore is brutal on an iron even if you know the optimal strategy - which involves constantly farming herbs throughout the account process which he is NOT doing. I suppose 70 is doable with his methods though - hopefully they don't release a quest with 80 herb requirememt like RS3 has
@@exantiuse497 Hopefully he'll have discovered a certain newly added herblore training method by then that's far easier for irons
EVENING SAVED INSTANTLY, lots of love from Germany
I love farming on the iron! so satisfying to build a huge stack of herbs and then get a million herblore xp in a day
God i love this series.
7:35 - "Bloody Hell" "Bollocks" "Well" "By God" all at the same time.
I think they are actually uncommon because they came out later than the rest of the herbs.
@@ivxx699 yeah I looked at that, but other herbs that came out in that update were added to the tables
Yeah, turned out to be an insane grind! Thanks so much for the kind donation and continued support on the channel ❤ it means so much
There is so much stuff i do inefficiently. I play Runescape to relax, last thing i wanna do is make it a job. Ive tried most methods in the game, and its been awesome!
In retrospect I wish I did my playthrough this way. It's just much more satisfying than looking up everything on the damn Wiki
yeah id have to disagree with that one.
Now maybe you decide "I'll look at the items required but I won't use the step-by-step guide I'm completely stuck."
IMO, it's fun having to engage with various different kinds of content instead of grinding the same select few money makers for 500 hours. That's why I play ironman.
And even know I heavily use the wiki, it's not like I always do the most efficient grinds.
I made well over 20k fire battlestaves for zenyte crafting grind.
You know what kind of grind that is for an ironman?
-Kill lobstrosities for seaweed spores
-Grow giant seaweeds
-Burn giant seaweeds for soda ash
-Mine sandstone at the sandstone grinder
-Make molten glass
-Blow into unpowered orbs
-Get 60K cosmic runes - I bought 20k from wildy rune shop, decided it wasn't good enough, then got several thousand pure essence from temple trekking and runecrafted 20k cosmic runes, and then finished sote and bought another 20k from the priff rune shop.
-Power fire orbs
-World hop at lunar isle to buy 5 stock battlestaves and nature runes.
Love the series! keep them coming!
Friday done with work watching youtube with my favorite food. Alien Food.
Yessss, best creator just uploaded 🎉🎉🎉
Mysterious old man - ooohhh is this a maze? No it’s a spinach role…. Only in OSRS!
Best 30 minutes of the day
"Oh Hello, mysterios old man, is this a maze? no it's a spinach roll...." classic runescape lmao
I think meta comes from the concept of "metagaming" in role playing games, which refers to using information from outside of the game that your character wouldn't have access to in order to gain an advantage in game. But given this series is about not using outside information it's still very fitting to say you're playing without it.
Unguided Fridays are the best ❤
❤
Welcome to the lovely CBT-world of ironman herblore my dude
Man this series will change once the new launcher is released
Always love getting a factor ad while eating one lol
I love your videos! I recently got a snapdragon drop and it made me laugh and think of you 😂 definitely didn’t expect it from the monster I was fighting though lol 😂
