It was a repossession, not the biggest risk in the world. Check tire pressures, test brakes, make sure it has oil -- good to drive home almost every time.
its a HONDA!
Perfect punch 😂, got me smirking.
Hey Sam brake judder is not because of grooves in the disc, it's because the rotors themselves are warped.
Yeah, I was going to post the same thing. Doesn't really matter since he is likely going to replace all the rotors anyway. Still, a brake job is a cheap and simple process. I am shocked at the number of people who will tear up their rotors for want of $20 worth of brake pads.
Hondas are notorious for crappy rotors, especially the older gens
It's like an indicator that the Honda you are driving HAS been driven before and the driver used the brakes at least once. Their rotors are NOTORIOUS for warping at the blink of an eye. I'd seek performance rotors if replacing, so you may extend the lifespan beyond the norm.
Many times, but not always. It can also be caused by pad transfer to the rotor. This happens often when somebody changes pads (to a different brand/material) but keeps the same rotors. If the rotors are still fairly new, you can turn them down and get more life out of them, but if they're cheap enough then replacement is the best option.
I've been driving a 2006 Ridgeline for 8 years that I bought used. Its my first "truck" and turned out to be my best "car" ever. It may not have a heavy duty frame like a real work truck used daily to haul heavy stuff, but for us weekend warrior types this is the perfect "truck". It even has a trunk. Its AWD. The bed is short but wide enough for four foot wide plywood sheets to lie flat. Runs great at 140K.
It is a truck. No quotations needed

Sam, make sure you change the timing belt on the Ridgeline. Or make sure it was already done. I had my Ridge since 2007, bought it new and have 400k miles on it. It’s bin stone reliable. Good truck for sure.
I agree with Lucky Goose . Do all the recommended maintenance and it will run forever. I sold my 2006 Ridgeline for $4,000 last year (12/2018) with over 425,000 miles. I had every service at the dealer and on time with all the documentation to prove it. Just do not skimp on the maintenance and it will run strong forever. Timing belt every 75,000 miles is a must. Great TRUCK!!!! Have fun!
My neighbor has almost 750,000 on his 07 Ridgeline.
At how many miles?
Now you've got me looking at Ridgelines... Can't wait for your supercar 👊

Shake over 80, and with the brakes, check the control arm bushings, I’ve replaced a lot of bushing for these generation of Honda’s
Thanks for the heads up - at 82MPH in my Ridgeline, I get a slight out of round type condition in the driver front, and was wondering if it was caused by a bent wheel. I would say it's about that time to check the bushing, she has 180K and have only have to rebuild the power steering pump, which costs 150 dollars. I have owned and driven tons of GM, Ford, and some Dodge products, but would say the RL fits me well....I dont haul 10k pound loads on a constant basis, like most people. I always laugh when I see a heavy duty truck that has never seen a day of work, their intended "duty".
I owned 2006 Honda Ridgeline. Due to 15 or 16 miles per gallon, I got rid of it when gas got over $4.00 per gallon. The guy who bought it from me still uses it to tow his boat today. He has never had a problem with it.
Types of people in the comment section:
1. Never owned a ridgeline and are calling it a minivan with a bed
2. Honda ridgeline fanboys
3. Rich Rebuilds jokes
How do you even know they did not own a Ridgeline and why does it even matter?
My Ridgeline here in Sarasota has 266,000 and still runs like new. I love that when I press the unlock button the second time and hold it, all the windows goes down. The rear tailgate opens sideward and the storage under the bed of the truck is a definite plus.

I want that C7. Perfect color and kind of high miles. I'm down for that!
It probably only has 500 horsepower
I've been a Honda technician for 13 years. Those are solid trucks. The new models are trash. But that body style has a strong engine and transmission. If maintained correctly you can easily see 300k miles on it. I service a 09 that's about to hit 300k at our dealership.
I just bought an 05 Ridgeline RTS with 126k miles.
@@truthreigns3267 how much did your pay?
Sam, love your channel. I'm a Honda mechanic, while these are not bad "trucks" but don't tow with it because they are just Accords with a bed. The trans will burn up.
so I was not the only one laughing that he passed over a diesel for a "truck" that was not made to haul much?
He lives in Florida; they have no hills. I agree he should not try to haul a car across a mountain range with it, but on flats it should be fine. Also, Honda increased the tranny cooling with both the Pilot and Ridgeline; so the tranny shouldn't be compared to Accords. Part of the Ridgeline towing package specifically reads "Heavy-duty ATF cooler"
not an accord... but a mdx/pilot/odyssey
I call B'S. You're not a Honda mechanic. If you were you'd know that it has a transmission cooler.
@@yosemitesam6945 The trans cooler is an option that has to be purchased from the dealer and installed. Even after it is installed the transmissions are weak. My reason for leaving a comment was just as a friendly warning to Sam but believe what you will.
Those Toyota Camry Taxis are a testament to reliability, at 430k miles with damage the car is still worth over $3k and runs.
Toyota is the best, ive had that many miles on a couple prius and my corolla is climbing at 240xxx. If your gonna put a ton of miles on it buy a toyota, i reccomend 2004-2008 theyre dirt cheap and last forever.
Taxis don't suffer too much I see them a lot at my shop. 70-80 percent of engine and transmission wear is at startup and warm up from cold and when the oil isn't at operating temp so it's too thick to lubricate properly. If the oil is at operating temp all day without shutting off the wear isn't as bad as you think.
@ isnt this why we dont run single viscosity oils anymore? Modern oil changes "thickness" am i wrong?
The Ridgeline. It's like the engineers at Honda saw the Subaru Baja and said...."Hey, hold my Sake."

Honda Ridgelines are terrible. They always have control arm issues and aren’t considered trucks by truck guys, because of how relatively small bed.
Sam spares no effort affording us with multiple camera angles to properly display the food & crud debris. True dedication to quality video. (Nice pseudo-truck).
@samcrac - Be sure to wipe the oil from the dipstick and dip it in a second time to actually check engine oil level. Next time you show up to drive away in a copart car, you might consider bringing your own can of gas as well as a couple quarts of 10w30 oil. The gas can help improve bad gas in the tank. Having the oil can replenish low level.
Yeah, at $3,500 into this vehicle, you'll be able to offload that Ridgeline when you recognize it isn't sufficient for your towing needs. So far, nothing lost. Add rhino liner to the bed-- cheap upgrade that will help improve resale value. Probably can make a youtube video about the application, too.
i had an 08 ridgeline rtl awhile back. it was the best "truck" i ever owned. it had a super smooth ride. handled great( independent suspension) tons of useful storage inside and out. i bought a 17 tacoma after it and it rode like a tank , had awkward uncomfortable seating and crappy storage. tip for you, check and double check the cooling system and if unsure do the timing belt. other than that its a great beater!

Oh dear, checked the oil with the engine running. Why and how did you even try to read the oil level? Oil was splashed all the way up the stick lmao
Marshal Beard that’s what I was thinking I’m like checking it after he started it kinda pointless at that point 😂
at least he can see if there is any oil in it at all
He checked to see if it was dirty.
Checking the quality of the oil not the quantity.
I think he was checking the condition of the oil itself. Not the level. Either way, I'd have done that while it was charging at the lot.
Make sure you do a 3x drain and fill service on the transmission. Drain, fill with honda fluid, drive for 10 min 3 times. Service the rear diff. Both are SUPER easy to do. Also, pull the timing belt inspection covers off and make sure the timing belt is in good shape. That's an interference engine...if the belt breaks, so do your valves lol
Congrats on the purchase! The J35 in those are super reliable if they're maintained well!
Seems like a good deal, but it won't be able to tow many vehicles. Shoulda bought a full size truck instead.
5000lb towing capacity. That's enough to tow most exotic cars.
@@mkt3000 An average car/truck trailer weighs around 1500-2000 lbs. So that brings available towing capacity to around 3K lbs. An Audi R8 weighs around 3500 lbs, a Porsche 911 is about the same. This is going over the amount of weight the Ridgline can handle. Even if a car was under 3500 lbs you never want to max out your towing capacity as the vehicle and trailer with weight on it becomes unsafe at speed.
@@IG8282-q9h He hasn't stated which car he's buying though. What if the exotic is a Lotus for example?
This is a pile of junk compared to a full size F250
The Honda Ridgeline can tow up to 5,000 pounds, most V8s do about the same. Others have also towed more than 5000 lbs with the Honda Ridgeline without a problem either, so I don't see a problem with it.
Personally.... as a former car salesman, I would hardly call a Honda Ridgeline a "truck". Sure, it's a Honda. Sure, it is "mostly reliable". But would I use it as a "real truck"? Hardly. Does the Ford 6.4 ltr diesel have issues? Of course. But a great diesel mechanic could have "bulletproofed" the engine, and you would have had a much better TRUCK for towing vehicles than the Honda, any day.
Good luck! Love the videos and I'm a huge fan! :-) (ps: I sold Ford, Dodge Chrysler, Jeep, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Kia, but was a certified FORD, DODGE, CHRYSLER, JEEP, and NISSAN sales consultant). Now I build BMW's lol
Yeah... theres no bulletproofing a 6.4. Go see Bill at powerstrokehelp on youtube.
Not denying the fact that the Ridgeline is not a proper truck.
Robert Miller I can tell you 💯 there is such a thing as bulletproofing a 6.4 diesel we’ve had a family 6.4 crew cab king ranch since new for hauling it was bulletproofed almost as soon as we got it it has almost 300k on it and it is driven daily on tow mode #2 which is position or level 4 . Sure a 6.4 is not close to one of the best diesel motors but with maintenance and bulletproofing there are zero issues!
But remember no one could find the key, for all he knew he'd buy the thing and the bearings would be shot.
I just watched a video about the 2004-2010 Ford F 150 5.4 and the defects they have. Ford mechanic showed us about 100 defects they have including the engine destroying itself. Friend of mine had an 06 F 150 it it was basically a parts truck at 180,000 miles because of the engine defects.
I would definitely recommend the first Gen Ridgeline. Nice choice Sam!
I can't stand the new version. I thought they would work with that ''Element'' chassis and go from there. The first gen looks more studly than the newer one, and as you see comments, it wasn't macho enough for many as it was.
those things are epic
Fairly solid deal, Sam. Not too expensive for the primary maintenance issues. A proper detailing of the interior should do wonders on the stains, and fixing some of the rust should be easy too. Great video as always.
That last Range Rover looks to be older that at first seems. I believe it is sporting after market head lights and tail-lights to make it look modern.

All of them looked horribly rough
really really sad you didn't go more in depth with the Camrys, interior condition at that mileage, see if they run well, etc.
Hey Sam 👋 I’ve always liked the looks of these Honda Suv/Trucks 👍...curious to see some content in this vehicle. The mileage on those taxis...😳😳300-400k!... goes to show if properly maintained, they _can_ last a long time. I’ve owned several former “Fleet” vehicles... do your research into what that particular fleet/company’s maintenance schedules were & you can come out with a good deal 👍👍 ie my current daily is an 07 Tahoe with 283k; runs & drives like brand new! 🚙

A testament to Toyota engineering that those Camrys taxi cars have In excess of 400k mile and still running!
I think you got a good deal. After a month or two of getting everything cleaned up and fixed I think you will really enjoy it. If you plan on towing a lot you might look into air suspension for the back to keep the rear from sagging.

My dad owned one before to tow our boat (it wasn’t a small fishing boat it was actually a pretty big boat) and it did fine, but yeah i agree it is ugly asf
Sam you should have bought a Tacoma
But it's a Honda with a very low towing capacity. With a flat bed trailer and a car on it, you'll likely be over weight for the Honda. Now think about rear end sag due to the weight, and front end lifting, making the steering loose. How about that transmission over heating?
For a parts getter or going to the store, Ok, but not for towing.

I'd say you did pretty good with this one. Although I don't know if the ridgeline is going to be the truck that you need. But it is hard to go wrong with a Honda, its hard to kill them, and fairly easy and inexpensive (relatively) to replace anything wrong.
Since when is a Ridgeline considered a truck?
considered a truck by people who don't know a thing about trucks lol
Sam never ceases to amaze me with his choices. I'll give it to him that he has tried his hand at repairs and whatnot but, when you talk to a car guy, they know cars. When you talk to a mechanic, they know the ins and outs of how to repair cars.
Sam just knows that he likes cars and he likes to wrench but, he is neither a car guy nor a mechanic. I think if you were to label him at all he'd be a trivial pursuit guy, cause he has lots of facts and such.
you are right. this is not a truck! omg
Truck: a large, heavy motor vehicle used for transporting goods, materials, or troops.
Now I'm no truck expert but being that the Ridgeline weighs in at about 4300lbs and has a been and can be used to carry around much bigger and heavier items than a standard car, I would call it a truck. Sure by definition it's more of a UTE but who in states actually uses that term. Sure the Ridgeline is no Ram 2500 but it's a truck no doubt 🤷♂️
Its not and that thing is rotted out scrap metal lol
I bid on cars at my local IAA and Copart yards, for LKQ Corp. My local Copart (Eugene, Oregon) usually has one of your YT videos playing on their 'channel' in the office......
on the older ridge lines you should check for SMOD (strawberry mixture of death). It is more prevalent in cars on the coast and up north. There are 2 steel bolts leading into the radiator that will rust and rupture the cooling lines causing the transmission fluid to mix with the engine cooling fluid.
Good advice. SMOD can kill the transmission.
I have had two ridgelines. I really love the truck. It’s not a truck for a contractor but they are good daily drivers for a guy who needs a truck from time to time.

Absolutely fantastic buy. The condition of the interior should be among your biggest hurdles with this truck, but in retrospect it's nothing that can't be addressed and this truck should serve you very well especially at the price you bought it.
Just a heads up though, you should check the condition of your radiator and check that it's not corroded/oxidized. These OEM radiators were known for corroding badly over the years depending on the truck; many cases being in the northern parts of North America. It used to cause coolant to mix with the transmission fluid and thus blow the transmission. I used own an '07 Ridgeline up until two years ago and we had changed the radiator for a regular aftermarket one due to that looming flaw.
To inform yourself more about this, look up "Ridgeline death by strawberry milkshake" (the mixed coolant & transmission fluid literally looked like that). But ultimately, I'd say a great buy. Hondas are tough to kill and I find this truck to be seriously underrated.
I'm rebuilding a ridgeline so I think you got a pretty good deal
Good luck hopefully it comes out good
That moment you buy a truck that can't tow, to tow....
Good luck with that
The Range Rover you said was newest was the oldest of the 3 hahaha. Great video
I always liked the 1st Gen of Ridgeline. You're more knowledgeable about mechanicals than me, so I leave that up to your discretion.
