I have a 2012 EL limited and can confirm it is an amazing road trip vehicle. Parking lots are the bane of its existence! Most of the time I’m that guy parking in the back 40 taking up 4 spaces. However short of a school bus there was nothing available when 3 of your 4 kids are over 6’ that could fit us all
My grandparents have 3 Expeditions. A 14 with the 5.4, a 15 with the 3.5, and a 21 King Ranch. All bought new, all still owned and driven on a regular basis the 14 has 115k miles on it and still has original parts and feels brand new. No ticking, no weird noises, doesn't feel weird, been running on conventional oil which gets changed every 3-4k miles and has yet to break. Grandfather loves them to death and doesn't want anything else for the rest of his life. Keep in mind, he was a GM guy most of his life
I own a 2007 XLT , no major issues with 138,000 miles , absolutely no rust , but small things like rear actuator issues , driver side window regulator and believe it or not , lug bolts have a cover that separates. I replaced original plugs at 117,000 miles and a coil pack. Only major issue was the fuel pump going out at the gas station with a full tank. Would buy another if they ever put V8s back in them...
Just bought a ‘14 Navigator L 4x4 with HD Tow Package with 140k on it and it runs amazingly. We are a family of 6 with 4 boys! Currently in the throes of baselining the maintenance on it, going full synthetic on all fluids that can be. So far it’s gotten air filter, oil/filter, transfer case fluid change, transmission pan drop and filter change, both diffs gear oil change, coolant flush and refill, power steering flush and fill, front and rear strut assemblies, and have the parts to change belt and tensioner, plugs, and coils. Trying to get her as bulletproof as I can before we take her on roadtrips. We pull a 14ft utility trailer with a 2017 Polaris Ranger XP1000 Crew (total trailer, UTV, and gear is right at about 3500lbs) with plans to get a camper in the future. Haven’t gotten to test out the towing until I finish all maintenance, but I’m really enjoying the vehicle in the week I’ve owned it. Comfortable ride, most comfortable vehicle seats I’ve ever sat in, overall build quality is still excellent looking some 8 years later, and we got it for a great price at just a hair over $15k OTD. I built a new 2023 Navigator L 4x4 with comparable specs on the Lincoln website and a new one would cost $105k!!! 😮 I’m happy with ours lol
The 5.4 V8 gets a bad rep but it's a solid motor if you take care of it. They require regular oil changes and a good oil filter that isn't restrictive and has an anti-drainback valve to keep the OHV drivetrain happy at startup. Mine has 455,000 miles and shows no sign of stopping. Also, keep the speed at 65 or lower and they do good on MPG, anything faster and they suck down gas.
Have you never dealt with spark plug issues or cam phasers? That’s the only issues I have heard with them. Do you know what maintenance could avoid those issues to occur?
@@levimagnusson5880 cam phasers are the result of poor oil changing service and cheap filters. Use the proper weight oil and a good filter. I've gone through a lot of of coils. They go out fairly regularly. Buy some from your favorite local parts place with a lifetime warranty and swap them out as they go out.
15-17 utilized the same 6r80 transmission as the 10s-14s. The interiors were almost identical as well with just slight updates to the dashboard, center stack, and gauge cluster. The 15-17 was a mere facelift of the exposition’s 3rd generation
You know how it is. A manufacturer comes out with a new motor and trans, then a particular vehicle goes through that transition period until enough of the new gen vehicles are built.
Nice review, I also love my 2007 Expedition. Got 105K miles and plan on driving it to the moon and back - in fact, I got married in my car in Vegas so now I have to keep it forever!
This was good to see the comparison, a third and fourth gen Expedition! I've got a third gen it's been good to us but I really like seeing someone else's point of view thanks so much for sharing buddy!
My wife has loved her 2010 EL. We purchased it nearly new and it has every option you can order. Now with 207K we are looking for a new Expedition Max. Been a great car and had many great adventures driving it on long road trips.
We bought a 14 limited for my wife back in June. I was looking to get another pickup for myself and found another 14 limited. Traded in our Lincoln MKX and came home with our 2nd expedition. Hers is black 2wd and mine is white 4wd
I am on my second expedition! I got literally the same one as my 2008 but this one is the 2017 limited EL I didn’t have the EL before but I always wanted the extra space! I will never own another vehicle it’s my absolute favorite. We just went on a trip to Idaho from Oregon and it was comfortable the whole way. I plan on keeping this one till the wheels fall off. Thank you for the comparison I was not really into the 4th generation and after seeing this video I’m glad I went with the 3rd gen!!
I’m so glad that I finally got to see the video with the Elise pulling up next to the Expedition. I noticed it in some of your opening cut scenes but I knew that I hadn’t seen it in an actual video. At first I thought it was going to be in the Spectrum of Sacrifice video and I was disappointed when it wasn’t. Now my OCD can finally be at peace.
I picked up a 04 expedition last year. Rust free southern truck with 200,000 miles. I love it. No more jeeps for me. Paid $3000.00 for it. I've budgeted $12,000. I'm in the process of setting it up the way I want it. Should be done in the fall. Can't wait. It will be better than new. Will be my strictly weekend toy. The price of a new one is crazy. Lots of real nice used ones out there with no rust. And no payments.
The mother of my good friend bought a first gen Expedition brand new, drove it to 200k miles, bought a second gen new at the last year, drove THAT to 200k miles, then all of the 6 kids moved out she asked me whag to get! I recommended all sorts of nice fun cars, CUV's, all that good stuff because she had a good budget! And she bought........ a brand new 2021 Expedition! She just loves them too much!
I love when corporate America produces the highest level script and video production and try to make it look like mom-and-pop home movie just that tells an impartial personal story about a used vehicle comparison. It does not matter that this video produces millions of dollars because it is accurate! Love Burgundy and Ford Expedition Hauler. In 2007, the Expedition's heavy duty tow package was best-in-class for full-size SUVs at 9,100 lbs.
We recently bought a 2017 EL with 30k miles. This thing is HUGE, but is going to be our adventure vehicle. Would have loved to get a 4th gen, but they were $20k more for one with more miles and lower trim.
Like you were saying 72k is a lot of other trucks used. The later 3rd gen expeditions had the 3.5 ecoboost, so you can still get the pep that the 4th gen has for a fraction of the price!
Personally worth it to get the 3rd gen Lincoln Navigator instead of the Expedition. Can be had for 7k-20k depending on year but options is pretty standardized with everything after 2008. The air ride, upgraded window isolation glass and body panel insulation is worth it to be dead quiet while driving, and oh so much more comfortable with rear airbags. Wish you would have shown the difference in rear storage with 3rd row deployed.
Love my '07 Expedition EL. Use an open trailer to take my S2000 to the track and then use an air mattress in the back of the truck to sleep on (it fits a full size air mattress). No money wasted on hotels and no tent mess!
Great comparison. Just bought a 2012 Expedition Limited, 140K w records, black on black for $12K. I was looking for an F-150 but found this mint condition beauty w same capabilities but more room and luxury for less. I was expecting soft land yacht ride but this is not that. 11 yrs old and not one squeak, rattle, or broken part. The somewhat sporty handling, tight steering, brakes and acceleration were a welcome surprise. Ford put all its experience w tough trucks into the build quality. Puts floaty rattly GM competition to shame. Didn't see it coming but I have fallen in love. Now looking at my Lexus GX sideways.
I own a Transportation company in SE Florida, more specifically Limo / Black Car Service. All we use are Fords and Lincolns, the Expedition Maxs is Fantastic, for many many reasons. Ford/Lincoln products cars are easy to work on, parts are readily available, Labor costs are not crazy and if you change the oil regularly.... they'll last forever, We've had dozens of them in all kinds of configurations for the last 10 years. Just sold a 2017 Expedition limited EL was close to 300,000 miles on it original motor replace the transmission at 275,000.
I am at 150,000k miles on my 2011 Expy XLT swb. Bought it new and used it to haul my 20' boat and Boxster track car for a decade. Making it more off-roady as we have moved to Asheville NC from Ohio. If you take your running boards off you will probably find your rocker panels are rusted through. (Ask me how I know) I am replacing mine myself, what do I have to loose? What Bilstien shocks do you recommend? That's on my to do list. Thank you for all the content you guys make. Would love to join you on pilgrimage some time. I'm a PCA HPDE instructor for over a decade now.
I had a 2010 assigned to me at work for about a year and it was shedding paint like it was allergic. The aluminum tailgate and hood have terrible paint adhesion...common Ford problem for years.
I recently purchased a used, low mileage, "almost identical cousin" of the 4th generation Expedition....The 2014 Lincoln Navigator L Series. Same drive train, little different body and interior styling, but built with most of the same components (switches, computers, navigation, shifter and all the functional hardware). A few extra frills like sunroof, real interior wood panels and air-ride suspension system. Fits the bill for a luxury hauler for people and stuff and a dream to cruise on the highway.
Nice review, FYI, 2003 was the first year of the IRS for the Expedition, same year as the IRS in the Mustang Cobra. The Ford Explorer got the IRS in 2002.
I have an 08 Expey Eddie Bauer with the 5.4L and a '15 Expey Max Platinum with the 3.5L Ecoboost. Up here in Canada the longer Expey's have always been called Max. My 08 has been chipped & tuned and it still can not keep up with my '15 that has not been tuned.
Both my 07's a limited and a Eddie Bauer have been awesome. 15mpg average and great power, tow and versatile room inside are hands down winners. I forgot to mention the turning radius are unmatched. The rust is because of the region they are in. I've seen every car eaten by rust in area salt and sand are everywhere
I've got a third gen with 300k daily driver. It was 48.5k brand new average around 18 mpg overall and 9 to 10 hauling. It's true ford can make some great trucks and suvs.
I miss my 07 xl, was cam phaser deleted a supercharger added and never left me stranded, did some off reading and exploring, now im looking at a 2018 max
I have a 2015 with the Ecoboost which is just a game changer even on the 3rd gen. I'd like to see a comparison between 3rd gen Ecoboost and the 4th gen :)
I bought 2004 expedition 5.4L back in 2013 for $4000 it was dirty inside I had to replace carpet. We still have this SUV in our driveway it’s 2023 we did multiple road trips never left us stranded. This truck have 215k miles. It’s rusting out but engine is still as strong as it was when we bought it back in 2013.
You almost catch the characture of this great truck but the independent rear suspension rusts worse than an old battery terminal making the truck unsafe. The rusty rockers and floors are only secondary to the rusting chassis. The bodies and interiors stay pretty well except the signature rust on the lift gates and the leather that cracks up. If I could find the shorter xl without these problems I'd buy it immediately oh yea the 8 coils that cost over $40,00 each and the cooling sensor that is below the intake manifold are not that nice.
My 2011…. Bought it new….No issues then at 100,000 changed the plugs, 135,000 changed the engine after cam phaser failure, 140k new shocks, at 156k ABS computer went out. It’s been a money pit, but I still enjoy it.
@@brentsnipes3471 I haven’t done it, I can’t get a replacement…but if I did get one I’m looking at almost $1000 to buy and have it installed and reprogrammed… I’ve heard there are some companies you can send it in and they will refurbish it..
It's actually not rust that these deal with. The hood and rear hatch are aluminum; so the bubbling and sometimes paint flaking you see is because of oxidation.
The new Expedition I think your review is spot on but the way people buy them at least in the Midwest seems like is mostly leased. We got a BLK on BLK limited 2020 after the 17K in rebates we got a limited all options for 540 a month and in 3 years we’ll go get another one what u get for actual money spent can’t be beat not the msrp but price u actually pay
I have been shopping for a 2010 sequoia 5.7 v8 4wd. Frame rust issues and cam tower oil leaks are the weak spots. Have not found one yet. I looked at the expedition and found most folks considered them trouble by 150k miles. Further the 5.4 v8 three valve has huge oil passage sludge failure. And the cam phasers and timing chain tensioners have oil seal failures that destroy the engine since all the oil pressure is in series leading to the right cam and valve train. If your dads truck is still running it must have had lots of oil changes. I want your honest opinion about buying a sequoia vs a expedition. And the 2015 and on expedition with the v6 eco boost seems do far to be a more reliable engine. So i want a large comfy truck for year round wisconsin family car use. I dont drive many miles so the gas mileage is no big deal. Would you recommend the sequoia or the expedition ? I know to try playing a bit to learn about overlanding the toyota 4wd stuff and suspension are better. Your honest opinion appreciated
Consumer Reports just said Suburban and Tahoe are most dependable large SUVs. I guarantee having a naturally aspirated V8 is why Suburban is more reliable than garbage eco boost in Expedition.
listen, i drive an '08 expedition eddie bauer and it's been from fl to sc to tx and what a practically made road travel suv that's veeerrrrryyyyy dependable!!! ✊😉👍
Paul is meticulous in his car cleaning regimen. And he's used Griot's Garage produccts forever and swears by them. If you asked him, he'd have a long explanation of all his processes. Thanks for watching!
Love the vid but have to disagree with the comments on the 3rd row in the 3rd gen. I have a 2014 max ltd in 6 foot 234 lbs and fit easily in the 3rd row with no issues getting back there
To be honest, the 4th gen seems pretty cool with all the new advanced features and superb engine specs, but the exterior body style just doesn't seem to catch my attention. I have a 2011 Expedition EL XLT and damn that truck is amazing...mileage is a bit high but I use it to haul big loads and has never failed me. I'm currently working on restoring it and fixing several broken components
Had a 2007 Expedition XLT and now have a 2013 Expedition XL limited. Live them. Yes I wish they didn't have some of the plastic feel but the limited us considerably nicer than the XLT plus the newer changes. Had a 2012 f150 in between the two and really miss some of the computer stuff the truck had in the dashboard
I’m looking to get either an older 3rd gen or a 2018 model or newer. I don’t want a 2017 because it has the first gen ecoboost. Which had some reliability issues. Ford fixed those issues in the 2nd gen ecoboost which went into the 2018+ models. It’s nice to see both gens compared. So I feel good about going with either. It’s hard to justify $60+k on a vehicle but at least it’s going to last and be worth it.
Religious oil changes with premium oil/filter holds off the 'sludge' issues, same as any car. It is critical for the 5.4 because of the VVT that requires more oiling points, passages, and operation of the phasers and solenoids. The VVT will get your mileage up to 22-25 mpg highway, but once you have a load or in the city, your mileage will drop. You are supposed to be able to tow Gen 3 using OD, the six speed tranny has two overdrive gears. However, a lot of VVT vehicles require timing jobs between 150K-200K and cost about the same, $3000-$4000. You gotta do it, so save up. If you are a good mechanic, $800 in parts and a day or two of tedious work in your garage. The bad rep of the 5.4 is because a lot of owners bought used, don't know the service history, and go cheap on oil and don't plan for the timing job. Parts to change are the guides, phasers, solenoids, upgrade to a Hi-Volume oil pump, and the roller-rockers too, as they wear out and have been upgraded to direct oil better. The 2008 5.4 has the re-engineered heads, so make sure you get one of those, or later. As for towing, the 9200lb package is not very common and if buying used you must research the vin number. One sign you have the 9200 capacity is if the trailer connector has seven pins. All the others only are rated for about 6000lbs.
Test drove both 22 Yukon and Tahoe I know they are technically the same but they both sucked. Build quality is subpar. You could see paint issues even being new. Purchased an Expedition instead and this thing is great.
We were posting reviews of this style on our original channel for a while and it proved to slow that channels growth. The majority of subscribers to our other channel want enthusiast focus vehicles and comparisons. Yet, manufacturers send us mostly CUVs and SUVs because they have more of those. So we made this channel for those reviews and it’s growing as hoped, as is our other channel. Thanks for watching!
The tampa dealership is selling 2024 expedition for $88K ! That's a rip-off ! I can buy used 2014 expedition and install re manufactured engine and modified transmission for a fraction of the price.
U know that a car is the biggest money pit there is in life, you're paying about 85k total depending, in 4 yrs that vehicle will only be worth (maybe) 30k and those who financed it, you'll owe more that what it's worth
Definitely. But on our podcast and elsewhere we also discuss the fact that spending the amount of time most of us do in a car that isn’t enjoyable is a tragedy. While we totally understand if someone wants to be frugal with their car purchasing, we also know that everyone has frivolous purchases in life - the place where that money is spent just varies. Thanks for watching.

I just picked up a 2015 Ford Expedition XLT two weeks ago
you mentioned supercharger...... but where will you get a blower for the expedition?
I had a 2010 assigned to me at work for about a year and it was shedding paint like it was allergic. The aluminum tailgate and hood have terrible paint adhesion...common Ford problem for years.
Where can I get a replacement frame for my 2003 first of the independent rears
Is your expedition lifted or leveled at all? What wheel and tire setup do you have?
I recently purchased a used, low mileage, "almost identical cousin" of the 4th generation Expedition....The 2014 Lincoln Navigator L Series. Same drive train, little different body and interior styling, but built with most of the same components (switches, computers, navigation, shifter and all the functional hardware). A few extra frills like sunroof, real interior wood panels and air-ride suspension system. Fits the bill for a luxury hauler for people and stuff and a dream to cruise on the highway.
Glass is different on the Navi, and MUCH more sound isolation everywhere..... used the price is minimal so might as well get the Navi if one can.
What are the rims with tire size?
Well now you guys have to do Todd's Cayenne vs a new Cayenne 👀.
Nice review, FYI, 2003 was the first year of the IRS for the Expedition, same year as the IRS in the Mustang Cobra. The Ford Explorer got the IRS in 2002.
rofl the comparison with the lotus is hilarious
I have an 08 Expey Eddie Bauer with the 5.4L and a '15 Expey Max Platinum with the 3.5L Ecoboost. Up here in Canada the longer Expey's have always been called Max.
My 08 has been chipped & tuned and it still can not keep up with my '15 that has not been tuned.
Both my 07's a limited and a Eddie Bauer have been awesome. 15mpg average and great power, tow and versatile room inside are hands down winners. I forgot to mention the turning radius are unmatched. The rust is because of the region they are in. I've seen every car eaten by rust in area salt and sand are everywhere
what aftermarket suspension do you have ?
‘09 Max here, but would love for a new Excursion WITHOUT the stupid billboard they put in the ‘23 Expedition
I've got a third gen with 300k daily driver. It was 48.5k brand new average around 18 mpg overall and 9 to 10 hauling. It's true ford can make some great trucks and suvs.
What is the cargo area cover and how did you get it to stick to the back of the 2nd row seats?
It’s from Covercraft and comes with all the Velcro and straps to stay connected. If you use “Everyday22” you can get discounts on anything from there.
I miss my 07 xl, was cam phaser deleted a supercharger added and never left me stranded, did some off reading and exploring, now im looking at a 2018 max
Have a 2012 EL Limited with 178k miles and have had no major issues. Looking turbo it😊
Love my 04 EB it was ahead of its time, heated/cooled seats, rear power folding 3rd row, etc, the only thing its lacking in today's world is Bluetooth
That can be fixed with a head unit my friend.
How many miles on yours?
You almost catch the characture of this great truck but the independent rear suspension rusts worse than an old battery terminal making the truck unsafe. The rusty rockers and floors are only secondary to the rusting chassis. The bodies and interiors stay pretty well except the signature rust on the lift gates and the leather that cracks up. If I could find the shorter xl without these problems I'd buy it immediately oh yea the 8 coils that cost over $40,00 each and the cooling sensor that is below the intake manifold are not that nice.
Good review! Have high mileage 2007 EB ford Expedition thinking about swapping 5.0 Coyote engine!
My 2011…. Bought it new….No issues then at 100,000 changed the plugs, 135,000 changed the engine after cam phaser failure, 140k new shocks, at 156k ABS computer went out. It’s been a money pit, but I still enjoy it.
How much was the abs computer repair?
@@brentsnipes3471 I haven’t done it, I can’t get a replacement…but if I did get one I’m looking at almost $1000 to buy and have it installed and reprogrammed… I’ve heard there are some companies you can send it in and they will refurbish it..
Thanks for sharing this video, very interesting and informative.
How did you get down to that price my guy!!
Theres a reason the sequoia is way more expensive in the used market. Its like comparing a Tundra and F150....No comparison.
How did you keep the beige leather seats so clean?
Paul is meticulous in his car cleaning regimen. And he's used Griot's Garage produccts forever and swears by them. If you asked him, he'd have a long explanation of all his processes. Thanks for watching!
3rd Gen gang 👌🏿
The best
Love the vid but have to disagree with the comments on the 3rd row in the 3rd gen. I have a 2014 max ltd in 6 foot 234 lbs and fit easily in the 3rd row with no issues getting back there
just an fyi, it's not rust on your tailgate. The tail gate and hood on those are aluminum so they don't rust.
Looking to buy a 2004 look like solid vehicles! Great video!
It was mid 2002 for the 2003 model redesign for the beginning of the independent rear suspension. Not 2004.
what the type of the wheels in your car? red ford company name
was your dad's 2012 lifted?
You were meant to say EX, not XL
A better comparison would be the gen 3 with the 3.5 ecoboost. You give the impression that the Ecoboost only became available in the Gen4.
Which Expedition has a smoother ride?
I believe the tailgate is made of aluminum so it’s not rusting it’s corrosion under the paint very easy fix
Great job !! Think I will keep my king ranch 🤣
The video is taken in the ski palace near Lake Tahoe. Haha Tahoe
It’s actually Utah. Thanks for watching.
OMG THE EXPEDITION WE ALWAYS HEAR ABT
awhhh the tailgate bubbles
I’m looking to get either an older 3rd gen or a 2018 model or newer. I don’t want a 2017 because it has the first gen ecoboost. Which had some reliability issues. Ford fixed those issues in the 2nd gen ecoboost which went into the 2018+ models.
It’s nice to see both gens compared. So I feel good about going with either. It’s hard to justify $60+k on a vehicle but at least it’s going to last and be worth it.
2017 wasn’t the first generation of ecoboost. 2011 in the f150 was first Gen. 2017 is the updated more reliable eco
@@coreybrady4541 it was still the first gen in the expedition. I believe you’re correct. By 2017 ford has upgraded the f150 to the 2nd gen
Love the video man, but this is more 2nd generation with the v8, 3rd generation is 15-17, and yout new one is the last of the 4th generation
Limited and platinum the ecu is programmed differently 400HP and 475 lbs and 2021 it’s 500 lbs
Test drove both 22 Yukon and Tahoe I know they are technically the same but they both sucked. Build quality is subpar. You could see paint issues even being new. Purchased an Expedition instead and this thing is great.
Why this channel when you have the much bigger Everyday Driver?
We were posting reviews of this style on our original channel for a while and it proved to slow that channels growth. The majority of subscribers to our other channel want enthusiast focus vehicles and comparisons. Yet, manufacturers send us mostly CUVs and SUVs because they have more of those. So we made this channel for those reviews and it’s growing as hoped, as is our other channel. Thanks for watching!
My 2008 fmf is a Beaty
The tampa dealership is selling 2024 expedition for $88K ! That's a rip-off ! I can buy used 2014 expedition and install re manufactured engine and modified transmission for a fraction of the price.
Long expedition all day.
But the Excursion all the way
You could have used an Expedition Max for the fourth generation.
My Gen4 Expedition MAX is small compared to my Super Duty...
Damn that sound like 150k worth of cars ...
Nothing even remotely close to that size in the UK.
What was this video about? It’s really all over the place, too many commercials as well.
A high reving v-6 cannot compare for low end torque. HP isn't everything.
Well, Fords are good cars
Oh god.. the 5.4 triton..
Yea?
@@matthewm3912 I farded
This guy is funny. He knows but doesn't quite know. If you catch my drift. I'm sure to non car people he can bs them not the real mechanics..
The wheels are so ugly. I stopped watching the video @ 2:58.
👍
That EL looks so dumb for being that long
Mateu Lahoz
The Expedition deserves a Coyote.
