Thank for the video! One quick note on nomenclature, I owned a video arcade in the 80's and 90's and still have my original Tempest. I repaired all my own games. It doesn't use a "gear" with "teeth". Much better designed than that. It uses an "encoder wheel" and an optical sensor. The knob spins a metal disk with rectangular holes. The sensor is "U" shaped and sits above and below the edge of the disk like your fingers would if they were about to pinch the disk. Light from one side of the sensor shines through the holes and creates electrical pulses in the receiver side. Nothing to wear out but the bearings in the upper part of the spinner. And they get abused and do wear out once in a while.
Dude, you're a legend. I've been using MAME for ages and have had a spinner for 17 years. 17 YEARS!!! I can't believe there was a formula for this the whole time and I never stumbled across it. I have no idea what the turn count is of my 17 year old Tornado, but it's fast so I'm hoping 1,200 will do the trick. Anyway, thanks for making this video. It'll make setup so much less of a guess and pain in the ass now. lol
6 years on this great video helped me take out the guess work of is that right or is that right lol it makes the games so much more playable when its set correctly..Thanks
Very helpful. Also, since I never saw it anywhere else. If you have an Atari Spinner from Micro Center. It's Turn Count is around 400. Example: For Tempest you would set the sensitivity to 18. 72 x 100 divided by 400 = 18. Or for the numbers he figures out in the video just multiply by 3.
Fun fact to all those that would like to purchase TT 2 or SpinTrak. They both are designed to fit in standard push button hole and both have pretty low profile.
Haha how many controllers does your cab have 😄👍Watched your other video and it looked like you had all of them. Great video anyway, just ordered my spinner, thanks for posting setting up these things can be a headache.
I don't have a permanent cabinet set up as I discuss in the main video on my channel. Whatever is in that video plus the Star Wars Flight Yoke. I did update my tank controller and added another spinner to that plus a newer 360 degree wheel set up.
There should be some trackball games on the alternate link in the description. I usually just adjust them until they feel right but most of the time the default settings work well.
Not really. That page is all we have to go on and there's not much there. Like I said, the default settings are usually pretty good. I have made some adjustments here and there but I don't remember which games.
I'm thinking of buying an Ultimark SpinTrak spinner for my X-Arcade panel like you have but apart from drilling the whole needed I have no idea I would get it to work on Tempest using MAME, at the moment I'm using a PS3 controller. Is it simply a case of plugging the spinner in via usb into my laptop or do I need to plug it into the X-Arcade panel?! Do you have a video or a video you know that will show me how to do it?! Thanks
Hi DarthMarino, Hope for your advice. Using this video I have set up Arkanoid, Tempest using your formula _ * _ / 1200 = _ works great with the TurboTwist2 Spinner! I only have a single spinner which is working fine for single or alternating games(where only one person is using spinner). What do you recommend for two player spinner games (where both need to use a spinner) like Super Sprint? Can I set player 1 to use spinner and blank out player 2 completely (for 1 player only). Or would you recommend using spinner for player 1 and trying to set trackball for player 2, so two players can play at the same time? Tried using the joystick for player 2 but this doesn't work so well:( Thanks Marty.
I wouldn't want to play Super Sprint with a trackball. A second spinner would obviously be the best choice. You can try messing around with the joystick but if one person has to use that method, it's only fair that both players do.

Hi, without me inputting loads of text, any possibility you could guide me regarding Tempest sensitivity on MAME?! I can send you a vid "unlisted" on what issue is, I have it on speed dial 20, sensitivity on 6 in analog settings but the ship still judders, speed around grid seems ok but the faintest touch of the spinner results in ship entering lanes I don't want causing death, something isn't right here :-(
@@DarthMarino Yes seems to be smooth on dsk top, a nice smooth pace from left to right, mouse setting speed set to normal (middle of bar), settings in MAME for tempest is around 5 or 6 but ship is very twitchy, the slightest touch of the spinner causes ship to slightly judder,...very bad in Arkanoid. I can always send you a short clip via "unlisted" youtube video?!
I added a SpinTrak spinner to the Arcade 1up and can adjust the sensitivity via the USB hack but MAME does not save the setting. Anyone have a solution for this problem?
I just received a spintrak spinner which came with the larger flyweight (there is a small flyweight option but I got the larger one), do you know if the heavier one is best for Tempest or should I ask to swap it for the smaller flyweight?!,....or does it really matter?! I know the heavier weight spins longer obviously but not sure if that's ok for Tempest, cheers.
i'm following you because i m restoring an old cabinet... and i would like to add a spinner... have you tried it with GTI Club? and is it compatible with SuperModel 3 and Dreamcast Demul ?
GTI Club uses a normal 270 degree steering wheel. I have footage of it in part one of my MAME racing games videos. I don't know of any Supermodel or Dreamcast games that use a spinner.
Can someone please tell me how he enabled that cheat (invincibility)? Is it correct that MAME cheats are only available via the TAB button on keyboard, as opposed to the Retroarch menu for many of the console emulators? I see a cheat menu when pressing TAB, but don’t remember seeing an invincibility cheat. Thanks for assistance.
Also, could you explain how to configure a Happ 3" trackball with Centipede? The page you referenced reads a little cryptic to me when applied to configuring a trackball using the same logic.
+evh347 If I'm understanding it correctly, to configure the trackball correctly you take 24 (for a 3" Happ trackball) and multiply by either 2 or 4 depending on the game and set the 'sensitivity' to that number, correct? So basically, sensitivity should be set somewhere between 48 and 96?
+evh347 I haven't really messed with the trackball settings but I think for the 3" Happ you would actually use 167.4 and the multiply it by whatever the game lists. In the case of a trackball, the bearing would actually rotate a few times per one full rotation of the ball.
Thanks for the info. I know the video is old but what do you set your mouse pointer settings to in Windows? I believe this does affect the way the spinner functions right?
I know this video is now 4 years old, but the formula seems wrong. In Tempest, using a spintrak spinner, a value of 6 is quite a bit low and the player moves too slowly and with a bit of lag. Up this to 15 - 20, and everything seems much better, more responsive. Perhaps my memory of a real Tempest isn't what I remember, but other games also seem too slow to respond using the formula. Obviously, there are other factors to take into account. LCD screen response, PC specs, MAME, etc... I'm on a Arcade 1up, Dell 2007fpb 20" LCD, PC - Dell Optiplex 9020 I5 4570, 16Gb, Nvidia GTX 1050, Win 10, latest MAME 0.214. I think a newer more upto date formula is needed for the latest MAME, and tech.
It should move 3 spaces with one turn. Maybe the Spintrak doesn't have an interval of 1200 or the computer is interpreting it differently. Too many factors to know.
Hey Darth, I have both a Slik Stik Tornado and a TT2 up/down (from GGG). You said the turn count on the TT2 was 1200. Do you happen to know the turncount on the Tornado? My search is coming up empty. Thx.
+evh347 Definitely don't divide by 4200. The Tornado has much less resolution than the current spinners. Try dividing by 42 and do the Tempest "move 5 spaces" test. It might be counting each tooth twice so try dividing by 84 if it doesn't work.
+evh347 which spinner would you prefer? I just picked up an empty cabinet that had arkanoid in it and I plan on restoring using either the slik stik or ggg spinner.
+302RELL 302Rell, that is a tough one. The tornado has an unmatched spin count, but the up/down TT2 can do it all and feels great. I also have wheels for my TT2. I would say the TT2 is better for its universal abilities.
+302RELL Keep in mind that evh347 is referring to the Up/Down version of the Turbo Twist which is not what I'm using here. The spin count on the TurboTwist should be sufficient for everything though. Arkanoid is likely the most demanding and it works just fine. The wheel is great though I would get the largest wheel offered (7"). I regret getting the 5" though I added an attachment so now its more like 11" so it worked out in the end.
I wish this setting formula worked and applicable when using a Pi3B+ jointly with Ultimarc spinner/trackball and Ipac2 controller hardware but doesn't. I have to go much higher and can only gauge accuracy by distance if described for a specific game.
@@DarthMarino I wish it were that simple When using Tempest as the example I have to have sensitivity @ 33% sensitivity for those 5 moves on the first screen. So the magic number I use to get that is 72 x 550 / 1200. The 550 replacing your 100. When I use that 550 for say Arkanoids turn count of 486, the sensitivity is just way too high as the formula then tells me for that game I need to be @ 220. It just doesn't equate for me it appears. I have to have Arkanoid at around 120 to get the 120-130 degree spinner turn dial spin traverse across the screen. Both Ultimarc Spinner and Trackball are plugged in direct to my Ipac2 which is running USB into my Pi.
Can I ask, I noticed you have collision detection off as nothing is contacting you, I have just installed mame and have also downloaded the Tempest MAME rom but I cannot play it with collision detection off, can you show me how to turn collision detection off or provide me with this hack version if it is one please. I plan to upload the entire game and will give you a shout out on the video if you can help me, thanks.
You have to download the MAME cheats. Google "Pugslys MAME Cheats" and on that page you should be able to find the cheats for whatever version of MAME you are using. The download file will include instructions on how to use it. In MAME you have to select "Allow cheats" and then a cheat menu will come up when you press tab.
Ok, sorry to be a pain but I'm totaly new to this mame stuff and inputting files. I have just downloaded the Pugslys file (0.186) which is one of my MAME versions, it downloaded in a war / zip file which I just unpacked, it then produced a packed "cheat" file with a "read me first" and "cheat" documents,...once I started to read it I got completely lost epspecially when it tell me to place the unpacked "cheat" file in another place. Some guidence would be great mate, I just want Tempest to run without collision detection, the Tempest rom I have working is "Tempest (rev 3, Revised Hardware) ROM". Any hope of you whacking a very quick simple vid to show how you did it???
Just put the cheat.7z file in the same directory as your MAME executable. When in MAME go to Configuration Options near the bottom then Miscellaneous Options and turn the Cheats on.
Right then, I got it to work perfectly on MAME 0.186, it comes up with an extra option "cheat" when pressing tab whilst playing tempest giving me the cheats I want, this doesn't happen on my other MAME emulator "MAMEUI64", after pressing tab no such extra option appears :-/ Well at least it works on one of them, thanks very much!
I made this a while ago so I don't know how it was set here. It's just regular MAME. If I recall, adjusting the contrast slider made a big difference though I've never been fully happy with out it looked.
I'm still trying to figure this out. Does anyone have any recommended dial/sensitivity settings for games like Super Sprint, Pole Position and Off Road, but using a Thrustmaster T300? I know these settings are more designed for 360 wheels and not 270 but was hoping to get as close as possible. So for Pole Position, if the original turn count is 102 and the Thrustmaster is a 360 wheel, does that mean it's 102 X 100 / 360 which is 28.3. So do all I do is change the dial sensitivity to 28 and i'm good? I'm pretty sure i'm still doing it wrong since in gameplay it's still way too sensitive. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks
Nothing in this video applies to a standard "paddle" style wheel. A spinner reports how fast it's being spin and in which direction. A paddle reports how far from the center is and in which direction. There's no center on a spinner and the games aren't designed to deal with the wheel moving back to the center. The turn count has nothing to do with how many degrees you are rotating the wheel for either input method. You're better off playing console ports of these like Midway Arcade Treasures, etc.
Looking for arcade controller with a spinner. So far I can find very nice arcade controllers with nearly everything needed for classic games, except none of them have a spinner. Please recommend a controller that includes a spinner compatible with Mame.
@@alexportugal1212I haven't played in quite a while. I have my sensitivity set to 41. This requires you to spin it a decent amount to move but that does seem to be how it's supposed to be played. I play this game on MAME 0.171 because the graphics have been messed up since shortly after that.
@@Chillywilly8818 I use that spinner for my 360 degree wheel and I use 720 as the turn count for it based on some tests I did and feedback from someone else who also tested it.
I'm pretty positive it's supposed to be off. When you do level select it moves right when you rotate clockwise which makes sense. I've played on the real machine somewhat recently and it worked just as it does in this video.
No, it's arcadecontrols.com or BYOAC (Build Your Own Aircade Controls). It's quite popular. They have noted the server issues and might get new servers if they continue to have issues.
It looks like you mounted your turbotwist2 above the right controller buttons of your TankStick are you happy with this configuration? Does it get in the way of playing joystick games?

@@lousterzenbach7235 My bad. If I had to guess it's maybe 90 degrees from left to right.
How did you get your vector games looking so sharp and perfect? Which emulator? Special settings?
I made this a while ago so I don't know how it was set here. It's just regular MAME. If I recall, adjusting the contrast slider made a big difference though I've never been fully happy with out it looked.
DarthMarino isn’t there also a vector setting itself that helps?
What about Arkanoid Returns for Taito F3?
Nothing was listed. I put 486 with a question mark. Try it and see if it feels right.
@@DarthMarino Wow, that's a timely response! Cool stuff, thanks! I'll try that out!
Thanks for the video. Do you have a similar video for trackball speed settings in mame? Thanks
There isn't much information on how to set trackballs and from what I've played they usually feel fine with the default setting.
@@DarthMarino thanks. I just got my trackball so i wasn't sure.
@@TT-ez3hr I would try a few games and see if it feels right and adjust accordingly. A bowling game like World Class Bowling might be a good test.
Can I play games like Time Soldiers and Shock Troopers with this?
I have Time Soldiers featured in part 4 of 6 of my MAME spinner videos. Shock Troopers cannot though. It just uses a normal joystick.
Looking for arcade controller with a spinner. So far I can find very nice arcade controllers with nearly everything needed for classic games, except none of them have a spinner. Please recommend a controller that includes a spinner compatible with Mame.
I don't know of any. If you find one that has a button you don't need you can replace it with the Turbo Twist 2 like I did.
Thanks. It appears that is what I might to have to do.
You know where I can get the turn count on pole position or any other game? Thanks
The description of the this video has all the info you need.
Hi ever found the turn count setting on Major Havoc?
Not officially. That's a weird one since it used the roller.
@@DarthMarino your recommendation?
@@alexportugal1212I haven't played in quite a while. I have my sensitivity set to 41. This requires you to spin it a decent amount to move but that does seem to be how it's supposed to be played. I play this game on MAME 0.171 because the graphics have been messed up since shortly after that.
@@DarthMarino Thanks
How did you get into the mode where the blaster doesn't die,in order to count the spaces per turn?
I'm using the MAME cheats.
Yes I heard that, but I cannot find it in MAME :(. Can you point me in that direction? Thanks for your help and great videos
got it now
In new MAME (example 0.190), with Spintrak, the option has a name "Paddle Sensitivity".
If it's a true spinner game, it should be dial sensitivity. A paddle is something that can only be turned so far like the paddles on Atari 2600.
Thanks for your reply... do you think that spintark have the same settings? www.ultimarc.com/SpinTrak.htm
As far as I know, the SpinTrak also has a turn count of 1200 so the settings should be the same.
thanks a lot
hi, have find a true settings for Ridge Racer 2 ? ;)
That uses a normal 270 degree wheel, not a 360 degree wheel like this.
i m tring with spinner and 360 whell mounted up... not so bad.. but i would like to fix settings in mame.. for regulation..
Is anyone having spinner issues with mame4droid? It keeps spinning and doesn't stop!
the formula didnt work for me my result was 7 but a whe turn of the spinner only moves 3 spaces...
20% sensitivity is 5 spaces for me
Which spinner are you using?
@@DarthMarino Grs usb spinner which i think is made by thunderstick the spin count is apparently 1024.
Im using advance mame
@@Chillywilly8818 I use that spinner for my 360 degree wheel and I use 720 as the turn count for it based on some tests I did and feedback from someone else who also tested it.
@@DarthMarino so you run that at 10%? ill see what that feels like
yeah thats only 3 spaces for me 20% is exactly 5 spaces... maybe it has something to do with running to a pi
Can't remember -- shouldn't reverse be ON for Tempest? Can't quite remember the original controls, but it seems to feel right with it on.
I'm pretty positive it's supposed to be off. When you do level select it moves right when you rotate clockwise which makes sense. I've played on the real machine somewhat recently and it worked just as it does in this video.
What about Arkanoid Returns?
I'm not sure since the website with the turn counts is is still down.
We got an archived version of the site and Returns isn't on there however it feels perfect with the same setting as the original. A turn count of 486.
Turn count link not working.
+NULUSIOS The site has been down quite a bit lately. Mostly in the morning. It's working now.
+DarthMarino is the site yours? Don't let it die.
No, it's arcadecontrols.com or BYOAC (Build Your Own Aircade Controls). It's quite popular. They have noted the server issues and might get new servers if they continue to have issues.
web.archive.org/web/20160421175734/wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Spinner_Turn_Count Backup of the turn count link
Great. Thanks. I will convert this and put it in the description in case this happens again.
It looks like you mounted your turbotwist2 above the right controller buttons of your TankStick are you happy with this configuration? Does it get in the way of playing joystick games?
That's actually not a Tankstick. It's a standalone trackball unit that X-Gaming used to offer but has been discontinued for some time.
The Link Dead :(
Use the archived link in the description or the list in the description.
Thank you so much for thus explanation!
