Tua(5'10) was older...But he could have done it, if his only championship fight was with anybody other than Lennox Lewis...That was the only chance he got for a belt fight...And Lewis changed the HW game, now they're all giants...Tua was prob one of the best who never got to be World champion in the history of boxing.

You think Joe isn't aware? Honestly, how stupid do you have to be to think that? Do you think you're the clever one that knew Tyson and Cus had a relationships? Think about it.
Like any great interviewer, you frame your thoughts hoping the guest will then correct, embellish, or add to it. They all do it. In Joe's case he's articulating in a way that Tyson can't so he's helping him out...setting him up to add more.

The craziest thing is Cus saw the potential in Mike long before we even saw him in his best condition. For that man to tell that young boy "you have the chance to be the greatest boxer". Like Mike said any person in that position would feel like they're being hyped up. Now we see knockout highlight reels of Mike and think "one of the best to ever box".

Dude, to say at that time he could be the greatest is still definitely a long shot, but make no mistake, Cus doesn't go up to random people and say this to them, Mike must have had a lot of potential and he's just being humble in putting it that way, sounding like he was a small kid with no physical/mental potential, which is far from the truth. The truth is they were both lucky they had met and created something amazing together.

For some reason it's nice to see Mike as a complete person now. I guess it's becasue I can see we all have that within us. When he was in his prime, all we ever saw was the Iron Mike persona that they showed on TV, and we all sort f figured well, that's all he is. I never dreamed I'd see Mike Tyson, decades later, and feel good about hearing him talk about his life. That's some big corners turned.

Mike is actually a boxing scholar on the level of Cus. The student is at least equal in knowledge to the old master and may have surpassed him in many regards. Being the equal of Cus and being able to teach and communicate it like Joe was saying is two different things and Cus still stands supreme but it's often overlooked how intelligent Mike Tyson is and the depth and breadth of his knowledge on pretty much all aspects of boxing and has the actual career experience, which was one of a kind, to put with it. He was watching film from the D'amato library when he was 14 and had Cus giving him personal instruction and commentary on all the greats and some fighters people never even heard of but were no less great. Like an old samurai master with his greatest pupil just unloading the distilled wisdom of 80 years in and out of the ring.

Tyson may have retired undefeated, stayed out of prison, and been the most popular and respected boxer of all time had his mentor been alive throughout his career. Mike lost his edge the further he fought after his death. I have never seen someone so tactically sound and intimidating as Tyson while in his short prime. Cus put Mike in a focused mental state that he could not find with other mentors and trainers.
