I did a 2 day course with Martin Deeley (US trainer) before using my e-collar with my lab. He was great for most things but I couldn't stop him chasing muntjac deer (the dog not Martin Deeley) and so I was always concerned about him running onto a road.
We used (and was in the accompanying manual) the stim at a very low level to get attention, pretty much ignored the tone and vibration. The stim was never used as a correction but rather the equivalent of a tap on the shoulder BEFORE issuing the command so I used it with a whistle once I'd got focus back. In fact, when a neighbour shouted at me for "electrocuting" my dog, I got him to hold the collar at the setting I used for Bert (my lab) and said I'd tell him when I pressed the button so get ready.... I had actually pressed it three or four times and the guy couldn't even feel it!!! He was amazed. Like any tool then can be used incorrectly but for me at least it wasn't used as a correction.
Different approach but I do like your technique too and can see a correction could be necessary for some dogs.

Fun fact… this video teaches JUST the tone for recall. We do use stim when teaching an emergency recall command. I do EXACTLY what you described when demoing an electronic collar to people where you can shock them and they never notice. It totally changes their perspective on the device and how we use it to train effectively.

@@unleasheddogtraining3451 thanks for the reply. About six months ago we acquired a stray gypsy lurcher, wasn't looking for another dog since Bert passed as we've got an lovely older staffy-cross rescue too, but the lurcher turned up in our garden in a right state and couldn't see her go into rescue centre. She's proving a bit of a handful! Recall on a long lead is good until she spots a hare/deer but eventually it would be great to let her off. I watched your video because I'm going to start using the tone only approach instead of the whistle, hoping eventually I may be able to let her off and then an emergency recall/correction with the stim maybe a good safety option. Thanks again.

I have a Belgian Malinois 2 years old. He responds very well to just the tone...doesn't even need vibration or electrical stim.

This is always why we teach the recall this way if someone has an e-collar… can I ask, what do you do if your dog doesn’t come to the tone?

@@unleasheddogtraining3451 So I trained him to come before he even had the e collar. But I wanted to be able to take him off leash at a large park nearby. So far, he has always come back perfectly with just the tone. I reward with treats or a tug toy.

If you need electrical stim to recall your dog you must learn fundamentals. Fortunately in european civilized countries e and prong collars are banned.

not all dogs are the same nor are any training methods 100% proven to work 100% of the time. Its all on the owner and their training with these tools. Its like a chair, i can use that as a weapon OR i can sit in it and use it as a tool.

All dogs require rewards, corrections, and education. You can not hope to achieve a precision response from any animal without these principals… even humans. When we teach a child, a 2 year old, do we lecture them about how the stove is red and red is bad and hot and hot can hurt and pain is bad and we don’t want that…. But never give a correction for them almost burning themself? Wouldn’t a slap on the hand be better than burning themselves on the stove? Isn’t a light shock correction (and if you haven’t felt one you need to find a trainer and experience it) better to teach than the dog being severely hurt by something else? We don’t do this out of anger or dominance… we do this because we LOVE our dogs. Anyone that knows me, knows I would protect my dog at ALL costs… but an e-collar keeps him safe as well as other things.
