Hi, everyone.
I'm Bojan from The Roman Guy.
Today, we're going to teach you how to use the buses in Rome.
This is our latest in the series of "Roma How To" videos.
Now, in any foreign country, the transportation system can get pretty complicated, but today, we're going to show you how to conquer the buses of Rome.
We recommend carrying a ticket with you while in Rome.
You never know when you're going to need one and actually, it's really hard to find one on the bus.
You usually get them at a Tabacchi place.
Now let me show you how to actually buy one.
Buonasera.
Buonasera.
Un biglietto del autobus per favore. Quant'e?
Grazie lei.
When traveling around Rome, it's important that you know where you are, where you're going, and which bus number you're supposed to take.
We're standing here on the bus stop in Piazza Venezia.
The Italian word for bus stop is fermata.
You'll read the fermata on top of the boards and also the name of that bus stop.
In this case, Piazza Venezia.
After that, it's important to choose which bus to take.
Now, above the bus number, you'll always see a different letter, X meaning Express.
Watch out, this bus doesn't stop at every single stop.
Night bus is marked with the letter N and the ones you'll usually be looking for are the buses with the letter U, meaning urban.
Our destination, in this case, is Piazza Navona.
Now, usually on these bus stops, you'll not see the name Piazza Navona on the board, which means we need to look for the nearest stop available.
This is when your map will come in handy.
To get to Piazza Navona, we need to get off at Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which means, looking at your board in front of you, we're looking for the bus number 64.
It's also important to notice that the first and the last stops are what's known as the Capolinea meaning the beginning and the end of your course.
In order to get to Piazza Navona from Piazza Venezia, you'll have to take the bus number 64, heading into the direction of Stazione St. Pietro.
Now that you're on the bus and the crowd is finally cleared out, you got to use your tickets.
You have the arrow pointing out the place where you need to insert it into the machine.
Check it out. That's it, validated.
Everyone, we've reached our destination, the beautiful Piazza Navona.
Now, you can admire Bernini's Four River Fountain.
We hope this was helpful and make sure you check out our other "Rome How To" videos.
Goodbye for now
THANK YOU FOR SHARING, you are a big help, I am going to ROME solo on my 74th birthday, I FEEL I am ready and safe to tackle the public transportation, take care.
I used this video this morning to know what to do on a Rome bus, thank you. Very helpful.
I don't usually leave comments, but this video was concise and to the point. You made it look easy. I'm hoping that it will be that easy when my wife and I visit this fall. Thank you.
Thank you sooooo much!!!! As an American in Italy, this has been a challenge. But, no more! Grazie mille!!
Thank you so much for posting this video. Going to Rome and throughout Italy and Sicily first 2 weeks of June 2018. Now I feel confident to travel on the bus with my family because of your video. 👍🏻

a real helpful video..thanks
Great video. Clear explanation of the fermata!
Thank U , very useful for my trip to rome, regards from Costa Rica
Bravo. Very well done
Very helpful!
Excelente; necesaria y oportuna la explicación para mi ya que estaremos viajando a Roma en unos días, gracias por compartir esta información
This was grea3. Thanks clears up a lot of questions 4 me.
very helpful! thanks!
Thanks so much, I feel reassure now that I have a brief walk through T-T
Thanks SO MUCH for this video I am going to Rome in August Solo and I feel that I am ready to tackle the public transport system now! Going to watch all of your other videos.
Hi!
Now that you've been to Rome, please do not judge Italy by experiencing only Rome. Milan is the proper financial house of Europe and Italy. :)
Very good explanation grazie🙏
Thanks this was very helpful for me today
Glad it helped
Very helpful
Glad to know. Thank you 👍
Thanks so much for subscribing
Planning on going to Rome for the first time next May. Going as a solo traveller plus I'm now classed as a "senior" (how did that happen?!). I was feeling a bit nervous about using public transport but not now thanks to your good self!!! Subscribed immediately after and can't wait to check out your other videos. Ciao...
Howdy. I have been to Rome as a solo senior. A tip. If you intend to use the bus and metro several times a day you can get a 1 day or 3 day unlimited ride pass rather than a single ride ticket. Purchase at same places...tobacco stores or news stands.
Hey, @philplace2726 how was your solo trip to Rome? Was it a good experience?
He talks with such enthusiasm wow
Very Helpful! I will be visiting Rome in September! What time does the bus start and end their day?
thx 😁
Nice 👍
Great video! Do you have to stick your hand out to get the bus to stop to pick you up?
I have a trip to Rome this Sunday, and that's is so helpful. I was wondering how to validate the ticket but now I know. thanks a lot
Good 💗
Is that a ticket for all day or just the one off journey? Thank you in advance for any help given.
Please make video on cheapest way to get to center of Rome to train station or by bus.
Great idea
In Kansas City, Missouri, where I live, three dollars gives you AN ALL DAY PASS to ANYWHERE in Kansas City. How simple is that?
Do you need to validate your ticket every time you transfer and validate it on the way out ?
Once you validate in, do you need to validate again if you get on another bus? If not, how do they know you paid for it or validate already?
So when it comes to trains you validate it before coming on? I never took one 😳 I am curious.
Do the Roma Passes work the same way? Like do you just slide it in and it works?
Can't wait for Rome in 2018!! Are the tickets one time use? Once it's validated do you throw it away and buy another or can you reuse it for the return trip?
Hi.. these individual tickets are valid for 75 or perhaps 100 minutes since you first enter them in these machines (that validates the ticket). Unless you buy the daily pass or weekly pass. During this 75/100 minutes, you can use the same ticket for buses, trams, and metro (underground trains) so just don't throw them away.
btw: DO validate the ticket just as you get into the buses or trams. Else in the unlikely event, you get a checker on your vehicle and they find you without a ticket or even with an invalidated ticket, you get an instant fine of 50 euros. They speak reasonable English and you claiming to be a naive tourist not familiar with their system won't help at all. However, it's fine for metros as you have to scan it before getting on the platform. Enjoy Rome
Catching a bus in ROME is an experience one never quite forgets. Don't think of the bus as a mode of transport rather as part of the Roman experience. If you travel to St. Pietro on the 41 beware of pickpockets. I always find it easier to join the bus at Termini or along Via Nazionale .
I traveled to St. Pietro on the 40 via San Pio XII. No problem at all 😊
Great video, thanks for the tips. I just have one question, the BIT offers multiple transfers in buses but can I also transfer to a Metro line using the same BIT ticket? What I mean is for example if I first validate the ticket on a bus I am then able to walk into a Metro station and get on the train with the same ticket or do I need to get a new ticket for the Metro ride? Thanks in advance...
You can use it several times for buses but only once for metro
Is it possible to pay by apple pay on the tickets machine in metro station?
Do I have to pay for each bus ride or can I transfer for free if I need a connecting bus?
Ciao, Grazie for posting! I'm trying to learn Italian and I have a 'domanda". The cashier told you the cost of the ticket and it sounded to me like he said "Un Cinguay" . And I have learned it should be Uno Cinqante. If there's slang being used here I'd love an explanation. I'm going to Rome for 5 weeks leaving end of April 2019, excited!
@@TheTourGuyVids Grazie! Mi Posso dire 'puoa parlarier pie lentemente, per fovore' I will never be fluent but I think it's important to try.
Is that ticket per bus ride or a all day ticket?
Thanks for this useful video. Is all the information still valid (for Oct 2021)? Can I buy a bus ticket in the Roma Termini, or do I find a nearby tobacco shop? Can I bring a suitcase on the bus? Still 1.50 euros? Thanks.
Did you ever get the answer to those questions? I have the same ones.
What does it mean....exact change? ( Spock - ST Voyage Home)
Hi, very helpful video, I planning to go italy for 14 days this year, for the €1.5 ticket 100minutes, how to check how many minutes i have left?, do i need to insert the ticket again when i off the buss?..and that ticket can use for bus in others city?. Like firenze or pisa?.
Thank you.
HZK YSA When you validate the ticket it prints the time of validation on the ticket so you just count 100 minutes from that time
hi, thanks for vídeo, it'll help me a lot but i just a
have a question, do you have to buy one ticket at a time or can you buy multiple tickets? thanks
+john david jaime oyola
u may buy multiple tickets, or a week one
Thank you both, went to rome a few months ago and i rocked to buses like a boss lol
3:20 - how do I find which bust stop is the closest to the point of destination? You mentioned map, but what map? On the bust stop?
Google Maps
Do u need to buy a separate ticket for each ride?
Chethaka, the tickets are valid for 100 minutes from the moment you validate it on your first ride. You can then use it as many times within the 100 minute validity.
Isn’t it very similar to US buses? The stops are a little different. Now with US buses AZ converted to buying passes off the bus too.
Hi! Do you validate your ticket when you get on the bus or off the bus? Thanks.
As soon as you get on the 1st bus
I've heard that buses in Rome are terrible and that I should avoid them because they're always late and crowded. Is it true?
Why do several bus stop have the same name? it's extremely confusing. (In your example: 3 stops are called "Corso Vittorio Emanuele")
How do you know where you are whil on the bus (speakers and screens aren't working)?
Glad you could help but Rome's transportation have still a long way to go...
You just have to use your judgement to figure out where to get off, there are no next stop displays or announcements. The same bus stop listed twice just means that the bus stops in the same place twice along the route
I probably missed something here, but when you buy the bus ticket is it good for more than one bus trip? Or is it a pass for the day? Or for the week? Do you have to find another store to buy another ticket to get back home?
Christopher Thorkon A normal 1,50€ ticket lasts 100 minutes, so you can ride as many buses as you want. There are also 24/48/72h tickets or one-week tickets.
16.5 Euro for 3 days eh.
So, is that 100 minutes of ride time or the ticket expires after 100 minutes?@@pachy03
@@andrewraynlowry5580 You validate the ticket on the first bus/tram you catch and then it lasts for 100 minutes. On underground lines and urban trains it is valid only for a ride.
@@andrewraynlowry5580 Yep.
Now do you have to pull a Stop Request cord or buttob etc like a US bus?
You press a button, like buses in most countries
Is there any app helping to find the right bus line and buy a ticket online?
Google Maps
Hey Bojan - you Tour Guys should do an updated bus video showing some recommended bus apps. Those signs are worthless and show a very limited amount of buses that pass each stop.
Is there a specific app you use other than Google maps or CityMapper?
@@TheTourGuyVids There is the official app "roma mobilita'"
@@Cosmopavone how is it better than Google maps?
Do the buses have screens showing the next stop?
Some do, some don’t. It depends.
Sorry I don't ride buses, but how do you notify the driver you want to get off? Do you stand at the door and assume he will open the door or do you need to tell him which when you enter the bus?
Push the request stop button. There are many throughout the bus on the wall and hand rails.
Thanks for the info... 2 question - Will those tickets also work in Florence? And what ticket would be cheaper to take for 7 days stay? Thanks in advance.
Which tickets?
This might be a silly question. Do you only validate your ticket once or at each stop you use it?
Just once, then good for 90 mins
If you validate it again, the inspector will think you're trying to reuse the ticket, so validate the ticket the first time you use the ticket, but no more
I have yet to find such a worse public transport than in Rome. Honestly nothing is good about it unlike the city.
Good thing is that the city is walkable and the megamonuments are in the center. Often no need for public transportation
Is a ticket good for an entire day or must I purchase one per ride?
You can get both single tickets and all day tickets
don't they have the unlimited rides ticket? like for every time you need to ride a bus you have to look for a Tabacchi place? Can I buy them in advance?
Buy tickets in advance
Are they fixed rate regardless of distance?😢
In another video, I found we can buy a daily pass for 8 euro, which gives 24hr unlimited travel on all public transport
As a Roman, the buses are one of the worst things in Rome, often they go on fire, they are dirty and completely full and they don’t respect the schedule.
I’m not sure if this happens also in the city center.
How much is the ticket? And is it one ticket bus bus ride?
per bus ride*
If you need this video maybe you should just go to Florida or Las Vegas on your vacation
Russel
If you didn't have a map how would you what bus to get a certern destination.
Ciao! Google maps is always a good option! Or download the app Roma Bus (ATAC time bus Rome) on your phone!
@@TheTourGuyVids Thanks
How are you Marocco abdo
I wish we had known about this 6 years ago when we visited Rome, could have been so helpful rather than getting jostled around
When I buy the bus ticket do I have to choose a specific bus stop to get off or do I get off wherever I want for the same price?
You get wherever you need to for the same price
Can I buy many tickets at once ?
totally. You can buy a few individual tickets and use them during your trip.
Busses 😁
Good video, although it would have been good to tell us to make sure we validated the ticket when we got on. We got fined €50 today for not doing so! We weren't sure if we had to validate when we got off. Also we couldn't reach the machines through the crowd on the bus! Warning to everyone, validate validate!
Ciao Lizzie! Yes, validating is very important and is at minute 4:18 of the video! You only have to validate when you get on the bus - that ticket will be valid for 100 minutes from that time stamp. So sorry you got a fine! :(
Thanks, we just weren't aware of the fine for not validating. Lack of research our end really I suppose. Rome was more than worth the fine though :) We can't wait to go back!!
@@TheTourGuyVids In the video it shows you validated it but than you get off immediately making it appear that you validated it as you were getting off. I think thats what throws off people a bit.
This is helpful . Why can't you get ticket on the bus.
In Rome, you have to buy your ticket before boarding any mode of public transportation, tickets just aren't sold once you get on
@@TheTourGuyVids Ok thanks. . is tourist places in walkable distance. Are taxis cheap
Many of the tourist attractions like the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and Pantheon are within walking distance of each other. Taxi costs vary based on the driver and the location you are going to.
@@TheTourGuyVids Thanks bus ticket you have to get at a shop. 5 days enough in Rome
@opabinia56 I visited Rome last year. I got to see all the places I wanted to see and enjoyed it.
Only Problem: once in the Bus you never know where u are as most of the displays don't work
Use Google maps
@@TheTourGuyVids well yeah that's what we did, but what if you have no access to google maps? Like how does the system work?
@@gtctv7000 stand near a window and look for the name of the stop on the bus stop sign 😂
@@TheTourGuyVids oh boy
Great! But now you have to walk back because you only purchased one bus ticket with only one fare on it :)
Mr. Slav, anything changed in last 9years ?

👍👍👍🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦✈️✈️🔑
I would never take bus 64 it has a reputation for being the pickpocket express
Thanks to buses in Rome, I didnt stayed on the street few times..
This seems complicated. In Scotland you just board the bus, pay the driver, and away you go. The destination is shown on the bus, and the driver will call out an upcoming town and ask if anyone needs for him to stop, if you're not going all the way. Of course, this is in the Highlands; not the city.
It's not that complicated really, just get the ticket beforehand at a newsagent and validate it the first time you get on. I think it's a pretty good system, paying the driver is fine on a rural bus line, but really holds up the bus in a busy city and I think it's something we could do here in the UK (most people either use mobile tickets or free bus passes, given most people who take buses are either young or old, which helps speed up boarding) because buying a ticket and making change really wastes a lot of time, especially over a longer route, having multiple doors on buses is also just much better, makes boarding so much quicker and smoother. Double decker buses also have stairs which just is more time and fuss, when they only carry 10 or 15 more people than a standard bus and a bendy bus carries far more.
sod that too much hassle
seriously = how is that too much of a hassle? it's not very different from using public transport in any major city.
This video is meant to be a parody trolling tourists right?
