  • A look at how Ian Urbina and an international team of reporters at sea and on land conducted a four-year investigation that revealed a broad pattern of severe human rights abuses tied to the global seafood industry. They focused on China because it has by far the largest high-seas fishing fleet and processes much of the world’s catch.

Or the other Indonesian guy who died on board and was put in a wooden coffin with heavy chains wrapped around it and put overboard because the captain lied about saying its what his parents wanted although the victims friends onboard said no way would they ask for a sea burial, another death by malnutrition, all these men lived off noodles and dirty water and denied cheap medication for a treatable illness.

I am Indonesian. I worked on Taiwanese longline-fishing vessel in 2010. I can confirmed, even in different kind of fishing vessel, chinese are BRUTAL including the chinese crew. Beaten, scolding, fighting among the crew, etc. Even when my left arm broke, they never let me go home until I finished my contract. One of my colleague from Phillipine die (the cause is unclear) and they put him on refrigerator room next to tuna.

They cleanse the oceans till there's nothing left. Hardly anything is left to grow to a good size. Most big catches are taken at there peak breeding times . Which in due course has obvious effect on overall size and numbers. There's now 8 billion people on this planet. That says it all does'nt it. The wildlife is disappearing, insects, fish, trees etc. Eventually there won't be anything. Who can you thank? Mankind

Humanity would need to stop consuming so much that comes from the sea, but as this would need to happen globally, it will never happen unless there's a (so far unprecedented) agreement internationally to cut down on fish and whatever else we fish from the waters. It is almost impossible, considering there is so much money for so many people involved. Also imagine being the government that has to outlaw fish, noone would vote for you again.

They take everything, and although SA is surrounded by 2 oceans, we now have to import fish.

I remember looking at two South Korean large fishing boats at Tarawa, Kiribati in the late 1980's and they were disgusting, rust ridden and stinking, crew dressed virtually in rags.
