Leen Vandenhende - With His First Breath (baritone horn, baritone ensemble and tuba) P.Lovatt-Cooper

With His First Breath is the beautiful slow melody taken from the middle movement of the brilliant major work Breath of Souls. I love the music of Paul Lovatt-Cooper, not only because I find it very nice to listen to and play, but it also features the baritone horn in a very rewarding way. I don't doubt the composer got inspired by baritone star Katrina Marzella, when writing solo pieces for the baritone horn. This piece is dedicated to his son, Luca.
I recorded the music with myself as the baritone horn soloist and the baritone horn accompanying ensemble, but a guest role in terms of a fundamental tuba part was assigned to my lockdown buddy and partner (in crime) Guy Audenaert.

The sounds of the two instruments are very similar.

@@johnries5593 Well, they can be. The baritone can overblow into a more brassy sound like a trombone easier, or into a pluckier sound for offbeats and other inner voice work a bit easier than the Euph. A great player can play on both sides of that spectrum

You should definitely go for the Baritone, the instrument deserves wider recognition! Regarding the instrument, I found everything I was looking for in the Sterling Virtuoso. I played/tried almost all brands and found the combination of all good things only in the Sterling Virtuoso. Brilliant sound, ultimate free blowing, excellent tuning, the entire range is consistent in tone and technical passages can be made very easy thanks to the very good valves. This is what I find important in an instrument, it can be different for someone else - I would recommend you try different instruments and go for the best match! Good luck 💪

Beautiful music and what a wonderful sound. Could you tell me the model and size of the mouthpiece of your instrument? I'm a sax horn student and when I watch your video it seems that the mouthpiece I use is smaller.

I play the Randefalk 4 baritone mouthpiece. For me it’s the best fit with my instrument. I tried almost all existing baritone mouthpieces and keep on testing new models and brands, but the RF baritone 4 is still the best for me. Good luck in finding the right mouthpiece for you 👍

Dag Paul, ik heb hier helaas geen bewerking van (had er mss beter toch een gemaakt, want krijg vaak de vraag 😅). Het is gewoon ingespeeld vanop de score van de baritone solo die je via PLC Music kan kopen en dan een toon hoger is getransponeerd. Succes 👍
