This is the University of Texas. They are known for high level musicianship. The person playing the main melody line has a Doctorate in Tuba Performance! I would bet that half these guys are getting advanced degrees in their instruments. You would be hard pressed to find better.
James Matheson, Jr. yea but it’s also not like if they recorded this using a normal mic on a. Classroom, you can tell they added quite a bit of reverb to it and it was recorded in a pretty acoustic room. I’m not saying this was bad, it was really Good, it’s just not what it seems?

Imagine a film score where a majority of the film uses a symphony orchestra, but the most impactful moment of the film uses this exact arrangement. I would really love to hear that. And I've also got to represent euphonium. The euphonium is my favorite instrument to play. It is beautiful. I'd love to play in a euphonium/tuba ensemble. My goal as a composer is to give the euphonium a permanent spot in the symphony orchestra. There will be lots of amazing low brass parts, but truly beautiful euphonium parts.
@Wyatt Wahlgren Just a brazen reminder to pull all euphonist to watch the anime Sound Euphonium because it's the most love the instrument is going to get in any media, ever
You guys need to do more videos. I have been playing the tuba for seven years and the euphonium for two years, and have found this video to be a huge inspiration to work harder than ever. People don't understand how beautiful the baritone and tuba can be when you put some effort into it.
My daughter plays the tuba. This performance first opened my ears to hear and mind to slightly understand what an expressive, the most human and solemn at the same time this instrument really is. I do admire you the conducter. Pharsing could'nt be more beautiful. When listening to something like this, one realizes a bit more what a valuable thing this life of all of us is. Thank you.
I remember shocking my mother when I started playing tuba. I fell in love with the soul that it can portray. I used to call it the brass bassoon. Highly underestimated yet powerfully expressive. I miss my tuba. Hopefully I'll get to pick it up again after college.
for me to be a trombone player hearing this song actually made me shed a tear It's soooo freaking beautiful i love the tone quality and verbrato of the Euphonium and especially the Tuba
Nick Cavallo pretty sure I only hear one voice playing the third of the chord and the rest is the most well intonated stack of perfect 5ths I’ve ever heard
I started on trumpet in 1968. My profile pic shows me playing baritone horn in step with Dr. Howard Cleave in 1970. I then went to valve trombone, played a little tuba and sousaphone, but I’ve been a slide trombone player since 1974. That is what keeps me alive! I hope you all can be as fortunate as I have been with the so-called low brass instruments!
As a Tennessee boy, this reminds me much of the wonderful and great Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble founded by Winston Morris. Texas and Tennessee - together showing the broad and melodious capabilities of the tuba and euphonium! BRAVO!
I stopped everything I was doing, and did not move one single inch until this video was over. I'm sitting here in my room in tears because of the beauty that just came out of my speakers. This song holds a special place in my heart, and the sweet sound of brass made it even better.

This is one of my favorite songs ever and I never thought a tuba and euphonium group could pull this off. I literally cried listening to this because I want to do this so bad.
@That Guy, nothing complicated for me at all. The tones of both instruments just wash over me, and I love it❤️. What a lovely combination . Now subbed. Thank you and best wishes from Cornwall,UK
The beauty of our instruments. This is one of the few songs that can really showcase how deep and beautiful the low brass can sound. It seems like the low brass never gets the melody. The wood wind instruments sound light and soft like a fairy, and it is beautiful there’s no denying that, but the Richness and smooth dark metallic sound that a tuba or a euphonium has is a different type of beauty.💖🎼📣
Gurantee it's just your speakers or headphones, the audio quality is very good, maybe the reverb is a little much but keep your opinions to yourself unless you're qualified to say so, thank you =)
Beautiful, my son used to play in high school band. He loved playing at Tuba Christmas in McAllen where 100s of tuba players from RGV Schools & universities would gather for a performance during holiday. My wife picked up his tuba and played in his honor during following years performances. Bittersweet memories. Thank you
That one made me tingle. I recall someone complaining about a tuba/euphonium quartet being called a "tuba quartet", but I'm sure he would even admit that the two instruments sound fabulous together. That and there is a shortage of standard chamber ensembles that admit baritones and euphoniums.
...and a bell that points to the side instead of up or forward. I definitely don't mean what here in the USA is referred to as an alto horn. I find tenorhorn parts in German band arrangements much more fun to play than baritone ones (good thing I read both treble and bass clef parts).
I watched this for the first time like two years ago, and I've listened to it probably 20 times since. I play euphonium, and it's my favorite ensemble video out of all I've ever seen. I never paid attention to who made it, but today I noticed that it happens to be the college I'm attending next semester. I'm now looking forward to UT more than ever.
Simply stunning! Way to go, folks! I am a band instructor in Canada, and with the terrible shut downs of our world because of the Covid 19, I have shared your delicate, reflective and heartfelt of this with all my students, and our staff. I have found myself completely drawn to this performance for the last two days. It is a message of hope and beauty for our world.Way to blow apart the stereotypes of low brass players!!
This'n just made me cry... I have distinct memories of my grandmother singing this o me while she was hanging out the wash.... Well over sixty years ago.
I’ve listened to this probably close to a hundred times and it is still so rich and beautiful that it’s hard to not well up with tears every single time.
This is easily the most incredible small ensemble I have ever heard, and I've been playing in and listening to brass ensembles for 20 years. Five years later I'm sure most of these players have moved on, but i still want to offer them all a heartfelt thanks for this magnificent performance. I wish there was more.
An absolute virtuoso of the tuba and an idol of mine since I was a Tuba player in elementary school. RIP Master Bobo, and thank you for all the inspiration you gave me to be the best musician I could be.
What a lovely sound, who would have thought six tubas and five euphoniums could sound so good. Such nice looking instruments too. Well done gentlemen, hope you are all still playing in 2024.
Dang. If the tuba euphonium ensemble in my college played like this, I may have actually enjoyed sitting through all those concerts. Definitely beautiful instruments, but often terribly misused/underused. Our tuba/euphonium ensemble always played arrangements that were voiced poorly for the low register, rarely making use of the upper range of either instrument, resulting in what sounds like a bunch of non-pitched rhythmic ‘farts’ much of the time. It’s a shame that was my first/only exposure to the ensemble for years. Anyone else experience this with collegiate tuba/euphonium ensembles?
I co-teach the tuba/euphonium at Oregon State University. We usually do mixture of original compositions and quality transcriptions and arrangements. We sometimes incorporate percussion or feature a soloist. Making full use of the range and color of the instruments is so important!
If a player masters or spends considerable time on their low range on a euphonium or tuba, it doesn't sound bad or like 'farts' at all. It can actually sound quite beautiful :) I think there might have been a misunderstanding of what style of play is required for each part of the instruments' registers.
It really depends on how you play the horn in its respective registers you may have a B flat tubist play the really dark deep low tones that bring this piece to life. And then have say an F or an E tubist Master the higher range on the horn and then you’ll have something cooking and may not even need the Euphonium if played to perfection the Tuba can do everything the Euphonium can but better I played Tuba so I may be biased😂 but it’s a melodic nature the “farts” you stated may be from the player themselves making mistakes and not having a proper foundation on how the instrument can be manipulated in the lower register this is definitely a Legato piece which are my personal favorite
I’m super late, but as a trumpet major in college I see it go both ways. Euphonium is an incredibly beautiful instrument that can bring so many different colors, but I’ve seen that here in Texas at least among younger players, the kind of blasty or “farty” marching band tends to be very common. I think it’s very important that younger low brass players are exposed to all the different uses of their instruments and how to play more than just simple bass lines. Love your channel btw Erik!!
It was all beautiful and inspiring, just like the voices in the movie. These "big boys' of the band and orchestra can make soft and gentle sounds that make the heart swoon. And, they did. Great job guys...and whoever wrote the arrangement.
1st time hearing this. been playing tuba for over 4 decades and I can say I was impressed with the sound, playing and the quality of the video. 1 thing also about the video, I can hear the emotion in the music being played by the musicians. Thanks for that too.
I clicked this video strictly for the fact that I’m a Clarinet Performance Major. I like to listen to other classical renditions. Truth be told, I was not expecting much. I am so sorry for thinking that at first. I listened to this video five times in a row and I’m in tears because of how beautiful and moving this was. It was the perfect amount of musicianship mixed with a gorgeous cinematography. I cannot wait to hear more from you gentlemen. You all are extremely talented and gifted. Thank you so much for sharing this!
A horn player myself, long ago, this rendition with low brass is a wonderful thing to have stumbled upon. Thanks guys. The COVID-19 lockup becomes more bearable when music like this can be heard and my Texas rivers brought to my screen. Thumbs up, a bunch of them from a once upon a time low brass musician.
I'm 55 years old. I used to play various sizes of clarinet and saxes in my teens and twenties. I also dabbled with flute for a few months a few times. I know from the fingerings of those instruments that some notes are played with the exact same fingerings on all 3 families of instruments. I would figure the brass would be the same thing to some degree. Am I incorrect in that presumption.....???
You could always get a Wagner tuba as an in between of the two instruments. It uses a horn mouthpiece but give easier access to the lower ranges the horn can’t usually reach.
My brother Russ played the tuba. I remember him playing with the highschool band. He was so handsome and strong. Now I am an old man, and I see him still; Making music, young and his whole life ahead, just around the corner. Miss you so. See you soon. Love you always.
Amazing! I would love to hear more works produced by this group of musicians. Hearing this piece reminds me exactly why I love playing and listening to Tubas and Euphoniums. Thank you for this quality work.
I'm a percussionist and I'm in my fourth year of band, but I've been thinking of learning euphonium on the side and this is just so beautiful and inspiring. Thank you
As a tuba player myself, this is the most skill I've ever witnessed on a group of individuals. Each one can do without the other, there tone is harmonic, almost one.
I live in Austin. I am SPEECHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is outstanding. Some arranger is BRILLIANT putting that duet Follow device in the middle. And SOMEONE is teaching some VERY fine Tuba players how to be MUSICIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2:06 - And- The- Video-footage!!!!! Wow!! AGAIN!! Beautiful. Captivating beyond words! This Studio needs to put out a CD every year! WOW! I've been a brass player for over 40 years and have NEVER heard something this amazing!!
as a first year music major studying tuba performance I am 1) in awe 2) inspired as hell! and 3) just a little bit intimidated by that incredible tuba soloist!!! kudos all around, y'all are awesome
Absolutely beautiful - as a tuba major at Michigan State in the late 70's, I had the privilege of studying with Leonard Falcone. I can see him smiling down from Heaven after hearing this. I found the empty seats in the auditorium chilling - Music will help us get through this awful time.
I have eternally been praised by this great sympathy of the tuba being a great song that really teaches to your soul as you can feel the freedom and the love in your heart. Nobody cant and wont explain this feeling as you drift to sleep just thinking of the greatness that this song has brung to you. No, you are not in heaven. You are now feeling by the great instrument and song by this university. In everybody's heart, Thank you
Magnificent arrangement, perfectly executed by men who know their instruments. Nicely done, gentleman. From a former Euphonium soloist and HS Band director.
So I'm in high school band still and play the trumpet but one of my best friends play Euphonium and several other low brass instruments and after hearing how beautiful this was I can only dream he gets to do something this great one day
Every time I listen to this, I find myself wishing it were longer, which leads me to listen to it tens of times on repeat. It's absolutely peaceful, and while jealousy comes in making me wish I could play on this level, it's inspiring enough to make me try to do so. Oh, what music can lead some to do, It's phenomenal.
im 31 from Scotland i am not religious at all on the 10th of January i was watching the tv show the blacklist this song was played on it the day after i had to put my dog to sleep that i rescued when i was 17 this song has been stuck in ma head ever since every time i hear it i get sad but also happy at the memories i love your version have subbed and pressed the bell
I played in brass ensembles in high-school and the first two years of college before switching to voice, but I had until now never heard such a lovely, velvety sound nor ever seen this particular combination of brass in ensemble. Erick Dean Tippett Retired Musician/Teacher Chicago, Illinois
The low muted tones are so sombre and sonorous. The combined melody across the slightly different pitches allows for so much depth too. Very wow. Very very wow, gentlemen.
Dear listener: Do yourself a massive favor and plug this into the best speakers you have, preferably anything with a decent subwoofer. Laptop and/or phone speakers simply don't do it justice. Enjoy!
I want to be on that level of tuba playing where you can just playing so meaningful without even trying. We never play any songs like this in my band so I do this on my free time but I struggle with be able to be completely meaningful in my playing
When you get good enough, it SOUNDS like you're not even trying, but trust me, they're trying very, very hard. When you play enough, some things do become second nature, but that just means you devote your mind to other parts of playing and the music. These guys are extremely focused while playing this. It never becomes easy to play at the level these guys are.
High notes at a slow pace on tuba is such a blessing to the ears.
I didn't expect much when I clicked on this but oh my god was I wrong, this is amazing.

John Ries the euphonium is also known as the tenor tuba anyways so it isn't wrong to say it's a tuba quartet
Lucas Boylan
Baritone, euphonium, and tenorhorn are all part of the tuba family. I'm no expert, but "tenor tuba" appears to be a generic.
John Ries tenor horn is definitely not part of the tuba family
Lucas Boylan tenor horn in the German and American understanding is basically a baritone with rotary valves

I played sousaphone and tube for 10 yrs, but have never anything as beautiful as this piece, gave me cold chills, their tone was amazing, well done!!
So pleasant I've listened to this to go to sleep before 😴👍

I am SPEECHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is outstanding.
Some arranger is BRILLIANT putting that duet Follow device in the middle.
And SOMEONE is teaching some VERY fine Tuba players how to be MUSICIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:06 - And- The- Video-footage!!!!! Wow!! AGAIN!! Beautiful. No question.
3:42 - Takes yur Breath away Gentlemen!!
There are no adequate words.
This is so good I can't stop watching this , I've watched this like 9 times , it's so relaxing , and makes you think how beautiful the world is
Simply beautiful. Thank you gents.
such control. this is a beautiful representation of the dynamic capabilities of the tuba. 🎶🖤🎵🖤
Captivating beyond words! This Studio needs to put out a CD every year! WOW! I've been a brass player for over 40 years and have NEVER heard something this amazing!!
Just a bunch of men with their tubas. Really makes me emotional. Excuse me.
as a first year music major studying tuba performance I am 1) in awe 2) inspired as hell! and 3) just a little bit intimidated by that incredible tuba soloist!!! kudos all around, y'all are awesome
I cant believe this is only played on the euphonium and tube. Beautiful piece.
Absolutely beautiful - as a tuba major at Michigan State in the late 70's, I had the privilege of studying with Leonard Falcone. I can see him smiling down from Heaven after hearing this. I found the empty seats in the auditorium chilling - Music will help us get through this awful time.
Both the tuba players and euphonium players sound amazing
I have eternally been praised by this great sympathy of the tuba being a great song that really teaches to your soul as you can feel the freedom and the love in your heart. Nobody cant and wont explain this feeling as you drift to sleep just thinking of the greatness that this song has brung to you. No, you are not in heaven. You are now feeling by the great instrument and song by this university.
In everybody's heart, Thank you
this is so great. more please
my son played tuba in high school. Nothing more beautiful than a well played tuba. Such crystal clear tones!
Tubas !!!! So beautiful I always write legato for low horns . Didn't know they could do or sound like this !
It's criminal that this channel has only one video
...and the Academy Award for Best Cinematography goes to...Taylor Rudd...Down in the River to Pray
We listened to this in band today and as a Tuba player I was like I need this in my life
Magnificent arrangement, perfectly executed by men who know their instruments. Nicely done, gentleman. From a former Euphonium soloist and HS Band director.
So I'm in high school band still and play the trumpet but one of my best friends play Euphonium and several other low brass instruments and after hearing how beautiful this was I can only dream he gets to do something this great one day
have been in quarantaine for a few days now, this piece really soothes my mind
The best rendition ever of this very precious song. Thank you for the beauty and grace!
Merci "University of Texas Tuba/Euphonium Studio" 🌺

Every time I listen to this, I find myself wishing it were longer, which leads me to listen to it tens of times on repeat. It's absolutely peaceful, and while jealousy comes in making me wish I could play on this level, it's inspiring enough to make me try to do so. Oh, what music can lead some to do, It's phenomenal.
Makes you cry, in a good way.
This was pure joy to listen to. Everything was so smooth and flowed together seamlessly. VERY WELL DONE BY ALL!
That was mesmerizingly beautiful. I didn't realize that such pure and beautiful tones could come from a tuba. Kudos!
im 31 from Scotland i am not religious at all on the 10th of January i was watching the tv show the blacklist this song was played on it the day after i had to put my dog to sleep that i rescued when i was 17 this song has been stuck in ma head ever since every time i hear it i get sad but also happy at the memories i love your version have subbed and pressed the bell
I played the tuba in middle school and I miss it so much. This makes me so happy to hear
Still listen tho this 2 years later, absolutely beautiful. Got to love that tuba!
Gorgeous beyond words. Is the printed music available? Please say yes!
Charles V Just bought it. Me and 5 other people will be performing this in April (I will be the tuba soloist)
Daniel Martinez Boiling Springs High School (yes, high school kids are attempting this)
Daniel Martinez That must be awesome. The only problem I've had so far with this piece is hitting that high Eb and F.
Daniel Martinez If the soloist in this piece is doing all that on a Bb or a C tuba, I'm impressed. I have to do this on a Bb.
Daniel Martinez OK. I feel a little better about myself now. I can hit those notes on a Bb, but they sound NOTHING like that 😂
Trombonist here that played Tuba in a charity band back in highschool. This almost brings me to tears. I miss playing so much.....
Absolutely divine. I play trombone but nothing beats the euphonium
Mark McDonald that's right we are kings
@@MaxRamos8 smart man
Best performance of this song ever! In my opinion. Beautiful work guys, Bravo!!
Bring me to tears every time i hear this 😍
I played in brass ensembles in high-school and the first two years of college before switching to voice, but I
had until now never heard such a lovely, velvety sound nor ever seen this particular combination of brass
in ensemble.

GIVES ME THE CHILLS BIG TIME
The low muted tones are so sombre and sonorous. The combined melody across the slightly different pitches allows for so much depth too. Very wow. Very very wow, gentlemen.
Dear listener:
Do yourself a massive favor and plug this into the best speakers you have, preferably anything with a decent subwoofer. Laptop and/or phone speakers simply don't do it justice. Enjoy!
Listening to this on my phone, I was thinking I need to do exactly that. Thanks for the tip!
This needs to be on Spotify so more people can appreciate it!
The audacity of this channel to upload this absolute gift to the human race and never upload again :(
Just wow, As a Tuba player this is a feeling of great peace and the arrangement was spot on. Thank you.
This makes me cry every time.
