This song & "Let's Hang On" are, for me, the best of the Four Season. Both have great arrangements & great performances. Those were the days, my friends.
SO amazing how Frankie just seamlessly joins in the chorus with that powerful falsetto for the "I'll be strong/try to carry on..." parts!!! Just listened to this song like 10 times in a row. Cuing up the 11th...
Probably my favorite of all the wonderful 4 Seasons' songs. It hits in all the right places, and I end up feeling very positive about life (at least for a while), and that's priceless. 🥰
Such an interesting piece -- the march-like character with accents on every quarter note. I can imagine the school band playing this when they are parading down Main Street, EXCEPT, as others have pointed out, the mounting tension with the upward modulations. And OMG when Vallie hits that "I'll, be strong..." toward the end in his high falsetto. Quite a piece!
When you start listening to these songs while or after you are in love they really start having meaning! That comes with getting older from what I see also.
JFC, what great music. I knew about and loved their 70s stuff, but this is pure gold. The producer did a brilliant job. I don't jack about music, but the perfect timing for the Season to join Frankie is stunning. What I think is a sax just makes this song so much better. I came across this song not long after I lost my dog. I had to stop listening because it brought back memories of that horrible day, but now it provides fond memories of my little girl.
I love the Four Seasons so much. I love almost every song they sang. Walk like a man and Big Girls Dont Cry, and sooo much more. Love their style so much.
I had almost forgotten about this number, but Paul Gambaccini played it on BBC R2 yesterday. The phrasing, harmonies and key changes are wondrous, oh beam be back to 1966!
Just a FANTASTIC tune; those melodies, the words, the tune, just wonderful. Hard to choose between this and The Night for me as regards their best, but really love this and always have. 'Child of the 60's'.
80's child here, but me and my bestie from Kindergarten through 12, took turns spending the night at each other's houses Jammin' to 4 seasons. Memories are the spice of life!
I was able to go and see Jersey Boys with my grandma a few years ago (one of many shows/oldies concerts I've seen with her) and I absolutely loved it! My husband bought me the movie for my birthday that same year. I grew up listening to everything my mom and grandparents listened to. This is one of my favorites by them
We're in 2020, but this will always be my favorite type of music. I definitely grew up in the wrong generation. The world is crazy nowadays... this music takes me to a time of innocence.
What a GEM this song is.....very rarely played on radio here in the uk....can almost guarantee its played alot over in the good old U.S.of A....where there music is by far the best.....especially with all there feelgood melodic harmony type of stuff .....anyway god bless and please remember to b kind to each other as good karma so important and also try to do something special for someone no matter how small it may seem at the time as it really does soothe the soul xxx 😇🥰❤❤❤😎
When i was younger i used to go on car rides with my nan. She always played this song and i remember in my head i thought that i was sacrificing myself for my friends at school 😂😂. Such great memories of this song! ❤
The beats are just "BOSS"....I'll be strong, just to carry on.....then the trumpet and sax kick in and....don't yo worry bout me (brave face from love lost and to put a "how the hell do you put a happy face on a love that you lost I will never know" but these guys made it sound like you lost a silly game that only tore your soul out of your heart!!! They were AMAZING!!!
Possibly my favourite 4S track. I actually remember it coming out & being on Juke Box Jury !! It's just not long enough & has such a fast fade-out ! Should have kept that last bit going.
When I was real young and didn't know anything technical about music, the fascination this song held for me was its continuing rise in intensity and excitement, even though they were singing the same words and music - "I'll be strong/I'll try to carry on..." Was it the arrangement, more emotion in their voices, different harmonizing? All I knew was it definitely intensified, and as a budding songwriter I wondered if just simple repetition could do that with a building arrangement. It can - check out The Cars' "Dangerous Type", but that's not what was happening here. I found out they were changing keys upward a half step, called a chromatic key change, and it's done FIVE times in this song. So the intensity I felt was largely due to those key changes, strategically placed by composer Denny Randell, lending some credence to the classical reference of the song title, and handled beautifully by all the singers. "Opus 17" is tied with "Mack the Knife" for the most chromatic changes in a hit pop song at five according to many references on and off the Internet. Anyway it's a great song, another in my beloved "happy music with sad lyrics" category, and I'll never get tired of it!
I thought so too, and then I remembered Tommy Roe's #1 hit from '69 which goes through 11 apparent key changes. Same idea, repetition being pushed forward by modulation.
The Four Seasons had so many hits, but this is my favorite song of theirs. The key changes give it such an intensity.
My favourite too
Mine too
It's my favorite too
I love this song. I have 2 favorites, this song and "Let's hang on.
Gives me goosebumps!
These guys harmonies we're second to none, in a word...they were Perfect
Curious how you wrote "were" correctly and incorrectly in the same comment haha 😄
@@kentuckyfriedchildren5385 What! can you not understand the comment?
i guess I am kinda off topic but do anyone know a good website to stream newly released series online ?
They were tirelessly excellent, but the Beach Boys are the all time kings of melody.
😍
The marriage of ethereal beauty & street corner grit in their music is magic. East coast legends ❤
Most underrated song from them
Totally.
yes, i also love "danger" is so underrated
Agreed, its a banger
it's not underrated because its in their best songs album
This song & "Let's Hang On" are, for me, the best of the Four Season. Both have great arrangements & great performances. Those were the days, my friends.
Totally agree 👍😃!
Those were the days, take me back!
So glad I can say…’I WAS THERE’!!!!!
This is them at their best.
WHAT days ???? The Viet Nam war maybe ??!!
Isn’t it amazing how a song could bring back all those treasured memories you keep within your heart.
Frankie Valli & The Four Seaons were absolutely incredible.
The best Song ever! Frankie hits more ranges in this one song than most singers do in a lifetime. Incredible !!!
Darn Tootin'
I saw them here in Las Vegas. My jaw was tired from singing along. 🎶
One of the GREATEST pop songs of all time!
the best song ever
Darn Tootin'
This song is straight addictive
I'll be honest. Wish it were longer
That's what she said . . .(h/t "The Office")
As catchy tunes go, they dont get more contagious than this.
A beautiful song to be sure, but sometimes difficult to listen to because I've lived it.
SO amazing how Frankie just seamlessly joins in the chorus with that powerful falsetto for the "I'll be strong/try to carry on..." parts!!!

Their last hit in Britain as the REAL Four Seasons.
Me too
Mine also....great song!!! Great harmony!!!!
Probably my favorite of all the wonderful 4 Seasons' songs. It hits in all the right places, and I end up feeling very positive about life (at least for a while), and that's priceless. 🥰
This and who loves you pretty baby.
Letting someone you love go gently and lovingly, hardest thing to do.
Those key changes, though. Phenomenal!!!
One of the most painful songs I've heard. It's the real love
If i could go back... Better times
I can’t stop dancing to this song. Listen to it and you will be happy without alcohol or drugs.
I agree with you on that! 🦋
This song never gets old ✨
It never gets new, that's why I Love It!
I cried many a night to this song! I totally wore out the grooves on my lp! My absolute favorite 4 Seasons song.
Me too never knew why.
Oh, those were the days of intriguing music; the tunes made one feel wonderful, not to mention the times were decent times.

there's nothing like a good old upward modulation
@@alanjohnson8479 Yes, it's infectious.
An amazingly upbeat song, for a guy with a broken heart lol I guess that's why i love it :)
Thank you dad for giving me good taste! RIP pops.
Profound: "What good is all my pride/If our true love has died"
With my dad going to hospice this brings tears to my eyes 😥❤
😢
I hope you're doing ok.
God bless you dear.
This song is such a lovely pick me up when I'm depressed. Thank you, Frankie.😅😊
Great song of an unselfish love. One of those greats of the past, and a vrey meaningful one. I have liked it during the last 54 years.
This song cannot help but lift your mood and outlook up!🎷
Even on the crap speakers at Tottenham Royale in the 60's this was one of the best records ever. Great memories of that time.
When you start listening to these songs while or after you are in love they really start having meaning! That comes with getting older from what I see also.

Why are all the Four Seasons’ songs literally my love life?
My favorite song by them. Just wish it would've been so much longer...
This is honestly my favorite four seasons song
The bassist for the group just died this past week. R.I.P.
It would have been more respectful if you had included his name: Joe Long (born Joseph Louis LaBracio).
The skinny tall guy?
I absolutely love this song since I was a little girl. One of my favorite songs ❤❤
This is one of my favorites of theirs. I found it interesting that each song has its own personality, yet you could tell right away it was theirs.
one of my favorites by the 4 Seasons! great melody! real catchy! surprised it missed hitting the top 10. it stopped at #13.
A lot of their records were like that. They wanted to keep a low profile. Didn't promote like they should have.
Just refound this and can't stop listening to it
Me too. For a break up song, it lifts me up.
I love the Four Seasons so much. I love almost every song they sang. Walk like a man and Big Girls Dont Cry, and sooo much more. Love their style so much.
Great childhood memories.. Great writing, great singing, great producing..Great beat, great horns..flawless...
This song brings back such good memories. If we could only go back in time.
We can, through music. It's like a time machine. I do it all the time.
The introduction to this tune tells you it's going to be a classic.frankie valley you beut.
What a fun song to listen to over and over
Love the brass arrangement too!
They were very influenced by Motown at this time. Bob Crew was.
I lika very much the combination of voices, and the music is great too. One of my favorites through the years, it is still good to listen and enjoy.
let not this banger of a piece distract u from the absolutely wonderful texture and depth the trumpet gives
One of their best songs ever!
I had almost forgotten about this number, but Paul Gambaccini played it on BBC R2 yesterday. The phrasing, harmonies and key changes are wondrous, oh beam be back to 1966!
@Dan Woog Thanks for that Dan, an interesting and welcome comment.
My dad and I heard him sing it live some weeks ago when he came to San Antonio
Just a FANTASTIC tune; those melodies, the words, the tune, just wonderful. Hard to choose between this and The Night for me as regards their best, but really love this and always have. 'Child of the 60's'.

Also a top 20 hit in the UK. Got #20 on 23rd June 1966 for The Four Seasons. Never gets old.

Yes.A Great Composition which starts in F# Major and Modulates up to B Major increasingly..Creating upward tension.and of course the excitement.

Their best. No doubt about it.
