To ‘choose’ the rabbit hole over your own flesh and blood. To turn away your own child on the word of a snake oil salesman. Lordy, that was a bluddy good film, well done.
Well done. I was so very close to hiding away from all social media and allowing the sorrow to soak into my bones. Then I realised, we are all here together for a reason. And there is a reason for this season. And I know, those who are true, kind and compassionate, would NEVER abandon anyone in their darkest hour or not stand side-by-side to push back. I am here for it. This was a gorgeous movie in every possible way. Thank you.
It really was great! I’m glad this film helped you realize there is so much more out there! Yes! We are all here for a reason and everything…everything happens for a reason. We just need to be patient and learn while we wait for the season to end. We are all going through it in one way or another. In this we are never alone. ❤
Wow, this is amazing. Well done. I lived this. In my case it was religion that tore our family apart. My mom loved us, just as this woman loved her son, but she was also brainwashed, sure she was doing the right thing, and adamant in her refusal to have us in her life if we weren't in the same religion ( one with crazy ideas) . She hurt us and she hurt herself, too, just like the mom in this film. Sometimes I put it aside and happily get on with the rest of life's experiences. Sometimes I revisit it and get sad.
This was an incredible film. It deserved every one of the awards won so far, and I hope it wins many more. Fantastic work to the writer, director, actors, and everyone else involved in making it!
Blake needed that to feel free. Being oppressed by a mentally unstable mother wasn't living his authentic self. He is fortunate to have a great friendship with Dom and new beginning out of nowhere. I really loved how authentic this was and how it teaches lessons to others going through similar issues.
That really hit me in the feels. I am the “black sheep” in my family. My mom doesn’t approve of my “choice to live a gay lifestyle.” When I came out she said, “and you’re doing this now to embarrass the family.” Ugh! She hasn’t gotten any better since and that was over a decade ago. As we know - being gay IS NOT A CHOICE. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🌈 Your film speaks to us all! Thank you. There’s power in letting going of toxicity even when it’s family (maybe ESPECIALLY when it’s family)!
Most of her dialogue is pulled directly from interviews and articles with Q folk. And I think Catherine did a wonderful job of bringing humanity to a role that could have been played for “crazy” for laughs.
I’m speechless. This was just so realistic. Such talented actors, both the mom and the young men. The montage could have easily veered into cheesy, but ended up being a beautiful portrayal of gentleness and stable support of a new friend. Dom was so sweet to welcome him into the family home without criticizing Blake’s mom. It’s such a gift to let someone you love make their own choices, just being a stabilizing influence, free of pressure or manipulation. So much authenticity and warmth in their budding friendship / situationship juxtaposed with the devastating destruction of the mother-son bond after the mom becomes yet another victim of right wing extremist conspiracy, and their shameless fraud and deception of the most vulnerable targets they can find. This was a spot-on depiction of how a once normal person could get in too deep. After sacrificing her family’s source of income by quitting her job, and then sending those people even more of the family’s money… It’s not hard to imagine the mom concluding there’s no way for her to admit she was duped, after financially devastating the family. Somehow she still believed it better to risk losing the child she loves than to face the reality that she’d been repeatedly victimized by the Qanon cult. Better to let them take everything from her, I guess 😢
I was absorbed from the start. You managed to capture and convey the message of growth, change, and hope in quite the succinct, yet touching and heartfelt manner. Kudos
For the avoidance of doubt there is no such thing as a Qanon. There is Q and there are anons who in the most part are revealing the truth which has been denied to humanity for so very long. BTW my late son was homosexual so I’m not anti “queer”, though I do believe the term “queer” is a derogatory title for a human being.
Same. Different situation, but same. Family is who you chose. This Trump/Qanon cult took people in a huge sweeping motion. I could talk about this topic for hours, but what it comes down to is our values: logic, compassion, human rights, and humanity. Won’t budge on them. 💙 Love you, friend.
Sweet film and very good acting by the young men. The mom was played by Catherine Curtain - a well-established actress who played "mean guard" in Orange is the New Black, among other memorable roles. Nice to see her in this well-done indie short!
Very well done and beautifully acted. It is a nuanced depiction of people who fall down the rabbit hole. Love and sadness, and the need to your own life.
Excellent, excellent short film, truly! I'm so happy for the hopeful ending with Blake and Dom. I know it not real, yet I hope everything goes well with them in their futures together. 🌈❤️🙏
God, how great is this? Just brilliant - everything. Amazingly acted and written. This should be a series, the characters are so easy to invest in and relate to. Heart warming and really very moving. Congrats to all involved!
Regardless of the topic, the atmosphere created between the characters due to the 'guilt' that children bear and the 'hurt' the parent bear was so tangible and relatable and real. Every generation through history have lived this.
Great film! Love the emotional extremes, the happiness,, sadness and frustration. Also that nervous excitement that took me back to my youth haha, love it!
The point at which a child becomes an adult, diverging from his mom's beliefs and values. In this case, it was for the better. It's a point in time that is pivotal for both parent and child. It's the end of innocence, a realization of a parent's frailty and weaknesses.
Conspiracy theories can be very destructive - Worst advice ever - To do whatever and deal w/ consequences later !!! Story of my life, til I learnt better thinking 🙏🙏🙏
Some might say that they both reflect ways people cope with a fractured world-neither truly grounded or addressing the broader societal and personal dysfunctions they embody.
What an absolutely beautiful film! This film shows the life of a mother and son in a moment in time …yet represents the immense negative impact that Trump’s fascist tactics, fear mongering, and hateful rhetoric have had on the lives of so many. Thank you for ending the film with what we all need now … Love and Hope!
You've made an incredible film that has captured the many emotions of growing into adulthood and independence against the backdrop of the madness of conspiracy theories. How heartbreaking to see the differences between the two families. I hope the rest of the story for our young protagonist has more joy than heartache. All the actors were phenomenal! All the best to the cast and crew!
Well, I watched it on a Tuesday, enjoyed it so much that I watched again on Wednesday and enjoyed it even more. Beautifully scripted, beautifully and artfully performed. I didn't notice a single "actor." Everything felt natural, as if we were peeking into homes. Well done, Sir Schoonover. And I tip my hat to the cast.
How his mother reacted when she found out he was vaccinated, is how I might have reacted if my adult child didn’t believe in vaccines. It was beautiful to watch him become his authentic self.
Touching. Thank you for sharing. Wild that there are Trump voters who don't believe some of their fellow voters are this weird. They absolutely are. It made me so sad that him just being himself "broke her heart". Breaks my heart.
What a great movie, with all the maddening, saddening dramas of today in Trumpland U.S.A! Excellent acting by both mother and son and laterally, the new friend. And a remembrance of that insulting unscientific vaccine dialog in the early days of Covid when Trump was so insulting to doctors and scientists, which was then picked up by a certain contingent of the population. I remember small groups gathered near a super market every day, shouting their anti-vaccine theories. And remember, since he never clearly said who his physician was, we never found out which vaccine he was taking. Like his taxes, no one ever finds out about these things, which before ...and including President Biden, had been mandatory and given freely.
Very moving film! The only part that tweaked me a little was the casting of Catherine Curtin, because I adore her as a performer and she seems like a fine human. So, part of me wanted Blake to stay and rescue her from the rabbit hole. Intellectually, I understood his choice and why it is valid for those who make it but … I’d have such a hard time with it. Alas, good art isn’t always pleasant, and good stories don’t require happy endings for everyone. Well done, all!
That's very kind of you to want that outcome. Sadly, I don't think it was a possibility. It's incredibly difficult to change the mind of someone who has been brainwashed. Notice how just the fact that he didn't embrace the beliefs himself made her kick him out. 😢
I’m with you. She’s a gem of a person and an incredible actor. I thought she brought a great humanity to the role, even though the ending was sad. Thanks for watching!
❤ This was whirlwind! It was Frustrating, Heartbreaking, and Infuriating! But, it was also Beautifully Sweet. Well done. Thank you, for the eye opening journey.☮️❤🌼
Wonderful.. Please be true to yourself. Children think that they can rescue their parents from destructive behavior. His mother showed him by cutting the cord ,that she didn't need him.

Quite a film for this election cycle. The way quarantine becomes a utopian space for a kind of familial love and affection. Just what the doctor ordered for the protagonist.
To ‘choose’ the rabbit hole over your own flesh and blood. To turn away your own child on the word of a snake oil salesman.
