I will just never get over the Bears draft that year. Obviously Mitch wasn’t as bad as Jamarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf, but damn did that draft destroy the bears for almost a decade.
Myles Garrett has developed into a future hall of famer as a defensive end. Not absurd to take the player least likely to be a bust with the first pick.
Very plain and simple he was a gun slinger at an average university like Texas Tech who was in an offense called the air raid offense. A non pro style offense that didn’t suit the NFL way of being a pro quarterback. And the scouts says air raid quarterbacks will not survive in the NFL.
When you see these retrospectives It almost seems like scouting and drafting is an inexact science.🤔 This is why I always get a kick out of seeing the analysts rate the draft picks in near real-time, you can never know how a college player will do in the NFL until they actually play in the NFL. I really do think we see a lot more of these QB misses because there seems to be a huge bias towards drafting defensive players these days.
NINERS NOTE! Niners were bottom of the league in both offense & defense. So drafting a QB with the 2nd pick was risky AND Kyle had just come from Washington and the possibility of adding Kirk Cousins on the free-agent market, along with an evaluation of the roster, ultimately steered the 49ers towards Thomas.
I'm not mad we skipped on Mahomes. Sure it sucks missed out on a player of that caliber. But at that time the niners were near bottom of the league. Mahomes would have been thrusted to start right away instead of sitting behind Alex for a year. Who knows if he would be as good without Reid. I'm just glad the niners are a good team even without picking mahomes

I honestly don’t blame teams for missing on pat, he struggled with accuracy/consistency, had poor mechanics, and his team didn’t win in college. Teams value a qb that wins and questions leadership, character and work ethic when they don’t (cutler and Jeff George come to mind) The horrible miss in that draft was watson; duel threat qb, all the tools, and an obvious winner (he was successful in Houston with a hc/gm that made his job harder. @@trentlee6823 Yeah: but look at what the Cardinals are stupidly doing with Kyler Murray. Taking someone unconventional & forcing him to study plays designed for conventional QBs. There are *tons* of egotistical P_and_ inept coaches at the NFL level who are just there to boost their own egos by pushing people around, not working _with_ their players. Josh McDaniels, John Gruden, John "I would rather lose games than call effective passing plays" Harbaugh... cripes we even saw Matt Lafleur basically flip off Aaron Rodgers then stare uncomprehendingly down the field where the dimes Rodgers threw were dropped because Lafleur simply kept trying to will *"his* plays" into success. Bellichick with Mac Jones, literally hiring Matt Patricia to slow Jones progress because he was exceeding what Bill _wanted him_ to do. There are a _lot_ of coaches who would have tried to change Mahomes just to have something they could claim as theirs.
I think it was because myles garrett who was selected 1st overall by Cleveland was through to be a generational talent by Cleveland and in the combine you generally don't see no look passes or scrambling ability which is why people like Mahomes, Lamar and Rodgers dropped in the draft
How many of these other teams IF they had drafted Mahomes, would have given him a year to study behind a darn good (tho not elite) QB to learn instead of just throwing him to the wolves? He would have been good anyway, but he would not have hit his potential under any of these other teams like he has under Reid and with the year of study behind Alex Smith.
Yet Brady got all the credit dispite have top 10 defense and came to a good patriots team..anyone remember the team he took over was headed to the playoffs....
Why was Patrick Mahomes not picked first? 2 words: Project QB. That is all you heard from analysts. Then he proceeded to get drafted, and hit the NFL like a defibrillator. As a Chiefs fan, thank you, Brett Veach. A lot of picks, teams still hit on, but they weren't PM15, that is for sure. Solomon Thomas, Christian McCaffrey, Jamal Adams and Of course Myles Garrett were not bad pick ups. In fact, that draft class was pretty stacked with talent.
Films showed Patrick to be too unorthodox, unpredictable and while he had good qualities they felt it was a real gamble. One scout bet is career on drafting Patrick and he was right.
The reason Mahomes wasn’t the first pick is his mechanics are not traditional and in college he threw a tons of picks. He was viewed as a project QB with a huge upside. Everyone expected him to be a gun slinger which he really hasn’t been. He also has the luxury of not having to start right away for a terrible team like most 1st over all QBs.
He didn’t throw a ton of picks in college. His int % was actually quite low. That’s why it never made any sense when they called him a gunslinger. It’s like the scouts & talking heads saw his he played & assumed he threw a lot of picks, but no one actually checked the stats to make sure🤣 That was the kind of mindset that allowed the Chiefs to jump up & get him at 10.
@@ninomorales7845 yes of course but belichick is a defensive minded hc Tom was always having the temper tantrums with the offence playcallers not Belichick Reid on the other hand is an offensive genius, just look at the plays he and Bieniemy wrote to mahomes and the offense in the superbowl and other games aswell I'd say atleast 40% of Mahomes success is because he landed with the chiefs and Andy Reid He was quite a rough prospect and got to the perfect team Sorry for the long post
Maybe I’m too optimistic, but something tells me he would’ve be about as successful in Chicago as he is now. Best predictor would be that the same guy who is his OC now was the Bears head coach then.
Exactly. If _Shanahan_ was his HC, we'd see 25 TDs at best from Mahomes. No one seems to realize this yet, but 1) Shanahan has a losing record in games not started by Jimmy Garoppolo, & 2) He *_still coaches football_* like he thinks it's hockey: as if his team can't both play defense if they continue playing offense. He *always* shuts down all offensive effort in the second half. It's consistent. So *part* of the magic at least is the (unintentionally?) weaker defense in KC.
Can you imagine if Buffalo decided not to make the trade and picked someone else? Mahomes was heading to New Orleans with the next pick and would have been teamed with Sean Payton.
I'm more of a Chiefs fan than I am a San Fransisco fan, but Brock Purdy, as a true Mr. Irrelevant (Final Pick of the NFL Draft for his year) pushed KC to require a Super Bowl OT and played a damn good game himself. The biggest play of the second half was a KC punt that hit the foot of a SF blocker and was recovered by Kansas City- So not exactly Purdy's fault or Mahome's quarterbacking skill. And thats not to take anything away from Mahomes either, he WAS clutch when he needed to be at the end of the 4th quarter and during KC's OT possession. KC went for, and made, 2 OT 4th downs. San Fransisco kicked a field goal on their OT 4th from inside the KC 10 yard line. And the winning difference was that KC touchdown vs. the San Fran field goal. I don't know how many coaches would NOT kick a field goal to take the lead in an OT, especially when you have (and really DO have) a champion grade defense.
Hindsight is 20/20. He was not a surefire prospect whatsoever, and frankly if he didn't land with the Chiefs he may not have become who he is today. Unprecedented talent met unprecedentedly perfect circumstances.

Trout was that once in a lifetime talent and everyone missed...even the Angels. Then came Shohei who is somehow even better than Trout.... nuts.
Some teams has other needs and you just cant tell how well any college player will do at a professional level so why are there still talks about this? He still went Top 10 so he was already regarded as a top prospect already..

Myles Garrett has developed into a future hall of famer as a defensive end. Not absurd to take the player least likely to be a bust with the first pick.
Ross now is in KC?
Correct, John Ross is in KC.
John Ross is now a Chief, lol.
A lot of scouts ignore the accuracy and speed of release. That's what Mahomes and Brady both have.
NINERS NOTE! Niners were bottom of the league in both offense & defense. So drafting a QB with the 2nd pick was risky AND
Kyle had just come from Washington and the possibility of adding Kirk Cousins on the free-agent market, along with an evaluation of the roster, ultimately steered the 49ers towards Thomas.
You must be a 49ers fan? We appreciate that context!
You pronounced Kelce correctly! You're the only one, besides me. Nicely done
Travis himself said it can be pronounced either way.
@jennifer aceste AFTER he said the correct pronunciation is "kels". He was trying to be nice.
@@dog-thebackwardgod
He also talked about his Dad getting calls asking for Ed Kelc-e. I am uniquely familiar with the issue as my last name ends with an e also & people often assume the e is silent which it's not, in my case. Short A-c-short e-st-long e.
Damn, I was just trying to pay thr guy a compliment. I'll stfu

Great video! New sub 😊
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @Michael D
I honestly don’t blame teams for missing on pat, he struggled with accuracy/consistency, had poor mechanics, and his team didn’t win in college. Teams value a qb that wins and questions leadership, character and work ethic when they don’t (cutler and Jeff George come to mind)
The horrible miss in that draft was watson; duel threat qb, all the tools, and an obvious winner (he was successful in Houston with a hc/gm that made his job harder. Him being a terrible human didn’t show itself till later.
His team didn’t win in college due to their terrible defense, and hardly any support on the offensive side.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
I doubt that Mahomes would have developed the way he did if he didn't end up under Andy Reid
Yep, they will made him to throw the ball "the right way" or force him to be a "system qb" like a machine. We would not see any of the PM magic.
@@pazu8728 lmfao tf u talking abt mahomes has thrown the same way since college
@Pazu - You have a point!
@@pazu8728 I see your point. Other staffs would’ve probably tried to “coach” what makes him unique out of him. These guys tend to fear what they don’t understand/can’t completely control.
Anyone know the name of the song or music? It’s so good
I thought Mahomes would be a bust. Boy was I wrong
Good for you admitting it
Because he was at Texas Tech which didn’t get any attention than Oklahoma where baker transferred from
Good point!
He was good coming out of college but if he went to any other team he would not be as good as he is now Andy Reid has a lot to do with how good he is
Agreed except there are a few teams that he could have done well with.
I hope Patrick Mahomes surpasses Tom Brady 😀
He played for Texas Tech is why he wasn't the number one pick.
Yet Brady got all the credit dispite have top 10 defense and came to a good patriots team..anyone remember the team he took over was headed to the playoffs....
That bears trade was dreadful
Mahomes was inaccurate in college. It helped that he was drafted by the greatest QB guru in the NFL.
Agreed.
I jumped for jot that year. We picked him. Was praying he was still on. That board. Roll chiefs. Roll😆🏈👈👍
Mahomes is the 🐐
YES
Why was Patrick Mahomes not picked first? 2 words: Project QB. That is all you heard from analysts. Then he proceeded to get drafted, and hit the NFL like a defibrillator. As a Chiefs fan, thank you, Brett Veach.
A lot of picks, teams still hit on, but they weren't PM15, that is for sure. Solomon Thomas, Christian McCaffrey, Jamal Adams and Of course Myles Garrett were not bad pick ups. In fact, that draft class was pretty stacked with talent.
Mahomes sat his rookie year behind Alex Smith. Chiefs were a final eight team with Alex Smith while Mahomes was being developed.
Films showed Patrick to be too unorthodox, unpredictable and while he had good qualities they felt it was a real gamble. One scout bet is career on drafting Patrick and he was right.
“Environment matters”. That’s why the Chargers fired Joe Lombardi & hired Kellen Moore.
Not sure if that was a rock or a compliment towards the bolts, but that made me laugh.
Teams that passed on him still suck enough said😂😂
The bengals are easily a top 3 team tho…
This dude I can tell… Narrated The Sandlot as Adult Scott Smalls
I love all the post-hoc experts.
It’s like the scouts & talking heads saw his he played & assumed he threw a lot of picks, but no one actually checked the stats to make sure🤣
That was the kind of mindset that allowed the Chiefs to jump up & get him at 10.
Tbh Patty needed KC, Reid and Alex Smith to flourish
If he landed on browns or bears etc he would most likely have been talent wasted
Couldn't agree more. Facts.
It works both ways. Look at the Patriots now. You need a unique talent to be great. Coaches don't play.
@@ninomorales7845 yes of course but belichick is a defensive minded hc
Tom was always having the temper tantrums with the offence playcallers not Belichick
Reid on the other hand is an offensive genius, just look at the plays he and Bieniemy wrote to mahomes and the offense in the superbowl and other games aswell
I'd say atleast 40% of Mahomes success is because he landed with the chiefs and Andy Reid
He was quite a rough prospect and got to the perfect team
Sorry for the long post
Does this dude even watch football? It’s Kelceeeeee
We messed up.
Anyone know the tune that comes in at 3:10? It's great
Can you imagine if Buffalo decided not to make the trade and picked someone else?
Thank you for sharing Ed. You should watch our $1m vs $50 million QB video on our channel.
❤️💛😍🔥I hope so 😍💛❤️💛❤️💛❤️💛❤️
Hindsight is 20/20. He was not a surefire prospect whatsoever, and frankly if he didn't land with the Chiefs he may not have become who he is today. Unprecedented talent met unprecedentedly perfect circumstances.
In the last 25 years The bears trading up one spot is possibly the worst trade and selection ever right? At least rg3 had one good year. Took away Andrew lucks rookie of the year trophy for sure. Ran away literally.
You had me right up to the point that you said.....Mahomes wasn't the only one to get team to SB. I realize like all the rest of these so-called experts.....you had no idea what is going on with the Chiefs.
This year Mahomes single handedly led his team to the SB. He had a lot of help his first two. Andy Reid deserves half the credit as well. Not sure why you’re bothered with an older video.
Remember, mahomes was a boom or bust prospect, and if he had gone to the browns or bears, he probably would have been a bust.
Whenever I see “Acho” on his show, and if he mentions Mahomes MVP, he Always makes it a point to remind everyone that P.M. was Not a unanimous MVP selection. And also that Lamar Jackson was a unanimous voted MVP selection!! Is there any difference between the 2 MVP titles? It sounds like Acho thinks so!!!
Brady went 6 round 199 pick montana 3rd round mohomes 10 pick 🤷🏾♂️
Kelc E...durr
I still think Andy and the staff were crucial towards Mahomes success
But is Mahomes the player we know today if he doesn't go to KC? Definitely not if he goes 1st. Where a QB goes is important.
Mahomes is really good... but I feel not enough credit is being given to Andy Reid. That offense... the talent that flows through KC...
Totally agree.
We have the new tom brady BROCK PURDY
mahomes going to kc was the perfect situation for him
Imagine passing on the future GOAT QB because you thought Trubisky is better! Just quit whatever you are doing in football and start at McDonalds my guy, so bad
Hilariously true.
49s 😂😂😂
Didnt see him
It's almost a mirror of teams missing on Mike Trout. Who, without the arrival of Shohei Ohtani taking over the best ever player title, was the best baseball player to ever play the game...dont bother harping about historic players like Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle....they never faced pitching like todays guys do. Trout was that once in a lifetime talent and everyone missed...even the Angels. Then came Shohei who is somehow even better than Trout.... nuts.
Thanks for sharing your perspective, I don’t have a strong baseball background.
Shanahan ans Mahomes would have been scary, especially now when NFC is so weak and 49ers having a top defense
“Most fans and media” did not believe that the tyreek trade would expose mahomes
And reason Tom Brady wasn't the first pick.
Some teams has other needs and you just cant tell how well any college player will do at a professional level so why are there still talks about this? He still went Top 10 so he was already regarded as a top prospect already..
Mahomes would have been lethal with the 9ers🙄
Number 1, they didn't recognize GREATNESS. Number 2, they didn't like his mechanics and Texas Gunslinger attitude. Funny how everything they didn't like about Mahomes is what makes him GREAT!!! I LOVE it!!!!
I like it. Thank you for your take Glenn.
And Pacheco was takin in the 7 round
What would've Mahomes looked like if he ended up in places like Cleveland or Chicago?
