As a jazz drummer, I can tell you one thing. He not only took us on the journey through all the skills in drumming, but he also nods to the playing styles of many of the jazz greats too. I always tell people if you wanna be one of the best drummers out there, do a lot of drum corps, jazz and metal studies because those will definitely sharpen up your skills really well
18 yrs. old just insane ability.Buddy Rich reincarnated.
Hi D., Agreed, he has some Buddy in him...which is a precious gift..
Goes to teach us... extreme drumming is not all about metal. It never was. We (I humbly include myself in the concept metalheads) have actually been lagging behind in drumming for several decades. But it figures - when a genre emerges, it's usually because some person had an idea about something different. It takes a LONG while for that idea to grow into a new genre, and even longer before people take it somewhat seriously, then even longer before the idea attracts enough musicians that statistically, one or more of them are godly at it, and finally, even longer before several of those godly musicians meet up and - maybe - form a band to define the whole era.
Well said !
Greyson now plays for Sepultura!
Fuck it!!! I'm selling my kits listening to this drum god! Buddy's back
No. You should PLAY your kits after listening to this drum god.
3:40 the drum angles are for traditional reverse grip style. Most drummers way back in the day started off as marching band drummers. the marching drums slightly leaned forward away from the player. the reverse grip we more efficient on the left hand to avoid or minimize rim taps. when these drummers moved on to the kits, they still carried this traditional style.
The angle of the snare , forward towards the bass, is the way drummers that played traditional kept it (see Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, etc.) Grayson is primarily an old school trad grip player.
"This is how Aliens Drum... Out there.. this is Crazy" I agree man!
6:00 - Sing, Sing, Sing! reference, Gene Krupa was Benny Goodman's drummer.
Dude, great solo. Greyson is like Thomas Lang, freakin animal machine. Also "shut up bass player" had me rolling, you are a true drummer.
I have been playing for 60 years and seen them come and go. I have only said this twice before but, this young man was born to Fucking play the drums!!!!!!!
Still can't believe he's in S.T. now too. Just amazing!
And now he’s in sepultura
4:08 - In his playing he gives a shoutout to Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Joe Morello. If you're a metal fan, you owe it to yourself to study jazz (as well as classical).
"How do you remember all this?" You don't, you improvise: )
"The socks!" "Those shoes!"
Watch him interviewed humble as all hell and gives props to previous legends
Caravan my dad first played this song for me when I was about 6 .I lost my shit he tells me Gene Crupa was the drummer on the version he record that day.im 67 now and still remember it like it just happened im a rock and blues guy but some jazz cats just have insane skills
Beautiful drummer❤️
Awesome reaction video brother!
Thank you! I have another Greyson nekrutman reaction for his whiplash solo
@@ArturoReacts you’re welcome! I’ll check that video out!
If you've not done so already, I highly recommend reviewing the drumming of Jojo Mayer, as he takes this sort of traditional jazz technique and applies it to drum and bass with his band Nerve. In addition to being a regular on the drum clinic circuit, Jojo has a video series he produced a number of years ago called, "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer," where he demonstrates many of the techniques you see Grayson employing here. However, the best way to watch Jojo is live. His performance "Live at A38 Ship 2018" is an excellent example of how applying jazz technique to modern music necessarily opens up possibilities and boulevards of space to explore the musicality of drumming.
7:00 - Buddy Rich.
You said it all when you said what "inspiration" you get from people like him. I've watched other video's of his and he is extremely mature for a 20-yr. old. (June 2002)
looks older to me but why would he lie? when i was 20 i played sort of like this all busy not many dynamics however i COULD swing i dont hear that swing in any of this at all but my point is i was 20 in 84 so i looked at my old scrap book at myself and my friends we were all just more "kid" looking and i was playing weddings bar gigs etc by then i have to mention this while im on this subject..its not that i don't like the kid but some of his comments on youtube and elsewhere make him sound like maybe he thinks his poo dont stink..i got news..it does alright. he says things like is buddy "goat" i mean why ask THAT question unless maybe one thought they were in the same class or above all of that is a complete turn off and before you say it (i dunno maybe you wouldnt im ass u ming here) no, he doesn't live up to buddy in any dimension at all ,i have a huge list of what drummers and other instrumentalist SHOULD follow if not to the letter at least loosely..when you listen to buddy its like more music than drumistic once you know what to listen for! buddy plays a snare drum in what i call 3 d he has the main note (for example) take a single stroke roll lr lrlrlrlr get THAT to close if the sticks are played evenly the drum will tend to hum its primary note (thats a very VERY simple example you could in theory expand and expand on that one alone then the 2nd dimesion..while still playing the closed single using accents start to play a very simple song (this is also a very simple explanation now for the 3rd dimension find different tones on the same drum doing the same single note roll now because youre thinking in terms of tone along w the accents that will loosely make it easily identifiable by even a novice listener i call it "color" others say shading..take your pick in this case they both equal the same thing///now i cant hear ANY of that in ANY solo this kid does i hear fast chops but i dont hear music not even a quote from this tune not sure who his teacher is but at 20 and to NOT be at least approaching or thinking ij such a way that tells me the teacher completely failed him anyone can play fast with practice that was never the hard part at all the hard part is trying to make some musical sense of it all if not doing that its can get (DOES GET) exremely boring that is to say i couldnt listen to a cd's worth of any of this because its simply ONE dimensional a perfect example is buddys 2nd solo in diabolus pay attention to whats going on with that snare drum in the start of that solo can you hear that? i missed it for a few years till i trained my ears which im still working on as we all should be doing bc no one "aces" that aspect not even buddy however buddy is def the closest ive ever heard get this 3d playing down he nails it in that solo but its everywhere in richs playing uses rim shots but then uses different tones of rim shots depending on the tune hes soloing to...any to answer the stupid question..YES BUDDY IS GOAT" prob will be for another 100 or so years i sincerely hope someone got SOMETHING out of this post
Been a drummer for more than 55 years so there's not a damn thing you can tell me that I don't already know. I've forgotten more than you will ever learn.Always someone like you to piss on another's performance. Instead of applauding another drummers performance you choose to pick it apart as if you're an expert. Any drummer,or musician for that matter that knows anything about musical styles knows that one's playing ability is purely subjective. Buddy Rich couldn't play with Rush though Neil Peart proved he could play with Rich's band so what's your point? I could tell by your narrative you are truly all tail and no cock. The man has skills that are unbelievable and I'm a serious critic. Listen.... I've been drumming in different styles of bands since your parents were probably kids. Don't wax poetic on something you know nothing about. If you're so good I look forward to seeing your video on UA-cam. Til then, celebrate someone else's attempt to put it out there for all to see. Jerk.....
I’m guessing he angles his drums to facilitate his classic grip.
the drummer of Sepultura 😅😂
The most amazing is not the solo but the way he play while acompagniing the orchestra ...
Greyson has more feel in his pinky than all metal drummers combined! And I love metal! Metal is based on guitar feel anyway not drums! Jazz drummers are the best!
He had one thing he was suppose to do.........play the drums.
He didnt play the drums. He murdered the drums. He made the drums bend to his will....
His snare is not at a weird angle. Typical drum angle used by all the greats from Gene Krupa to Buddy Rich.
Gene Crupa setup on kit basically.check him and buddy rich of course
Greyson Nekrutman is to Tosin Abasi what Luke Holland is to Tim Henson.
Nice shirt
9:10 its improvised
11:55 “That poor snare man”
I guarantee you that snare smoked a cig or two afterwards
You may want to check out the movie Whiplash. A lot of people that may have not known about this song, did after watching that movie
I watched that movie right after reacting to this 😅 good movie
Bet he’s a really good thumb wrestler😂
Do you know who Buddy Rich is at least ?
This guy! Predictably, rock guitarists & rock drummers get the most acclaim, however, musicologists prefer jazz players...similar to quarterbacks in football, they get all the ink, but it's really the offensive line...l know a few you g drummers that have never even heard of Buddy Rich...crazy
The guy has to do some Latin or African drums, he’s knock the western kit out of the park, move to other continents with the magic.
Jazz drummers can play rock anytime. But rock drummers usually suck at jazz. Jazz builds on rudiments more than any other style of music.
I was just checking out Greyson's channel, and he also does a lot of metal drum covers including Meshuggah and Deftones covers as well as punk covers like Refused.
ginger baker is the only rock drummer to ever battle jazz drummers. but yah this guy is insane
Mitch Mitchell for me
greyson is the new drummer for suicidal tendecies
Jazz drummers play melody. Who plays the baseline?
You should get into practicing jazz stuff you'd be amazed at how much better you get no matter which style you play
Probably never heard of him before because he's only 20.
A little short in the bass drum department.
He's good enough to kick anyone's ass.
do not talk this much man, sorry to say...
It’s cool man you don’t have to watch. I’m sure there are other reactors out there that better suit your taste
I started with Jazz guitar to then go off and play ROCK.... and pop professionally... Because of Jazz, my chords and especially solos were more interesting and complex but yet I still played sweet soulful anthem solo's...
мне твоя реакция понравилась.
