Love this game. Weirdly ahead of it's time in both good and bad ways. Pacing like this would seem right at home next to God of War PS4 for instance... but it's a PS2 game from 2003 attempting pre-Souls shoulder button melee combat, so it comes off feeling a little odd simply due to time and place. Especially since said time and place gives the expectation that Primal will be an action filled third person combat game, because that's what "everyone else was doing", when it's sort of... not really. Or not only at least. It's blend of story, exploration, puzzles and combat as bespoke pillars really came into favor more on PS3 onwards. As a PS2 game it's trying it's best but might be too ambitious for what they can pull off. Or for audience expectations. That said; with a better combat engine this game would be a cult classic me thinks. As is it's still a little lost gem. A pretty rough gem but a gem nonetheless.
Judas Priest, the early 2000s were such an awesome time for character/general visual design. I believe this game was made by Sony Computer Entertainment Cambridge, i.e. the chaps who made MediEvil for PS1.
Love this game, i admit the beginning is slow and theres alot of cut scenes throughout the game, but as you progress you become more invested in the story and unlock other demon forms for jen with their own unique abilities to help along your quest. I completed this game back in 2003 and just recently as an adult, which is why im searching up review videos to see how others liked it. PLEASE continue to play this game, your commentary had me laughing out loud.
@@JundaMane oh it is shit by today's standards but for a PS2 launch title (it was on the back of the PS2 box and was on the demo disk , god remember when they did that) it was a amazing experience, which i guess is the power of nostalgia for ya
I really really liked this game when it first came out. It plays really jankily by modern standards, but it was kind of the progenitor of the modern Sony wise-cracking-AI-companion genre they do so well.
Thank Kami-Sama someone talks about this game....it's an underated gem. By the way, Jen's voice actress is Hudson Leick, who was also in Xena: Warrior Princess as Calisto. I ship Jen with OG Dante.
The only actors I recognize in this game is Sean Pertwee (The Third Doctor's Jon Pertwee's son & he's Alfred on Gotham) and Colin McFarlane, who was Commissioner Loeb in Batman Begins, and Count Raum vA, Stephane Cornicard, has been in a lot Dark Souls titles. . Jen's VA, Hudson Leick, is pretty though, and Scree's VA, Andreas Katsulas, sounds cool, he's no longer with though. Honestly I gave no real input for this lol
An old PS2 game that I remember having fond memories of is EOE: Eve of Extinction. I now know that I had terrible taste then, but nostalgia is a helluva drug.
I played some of this at my cousins house. Neither of us had any clue what the game was about cos we were dumb kids. For years I thought this game was a false memory and now Mat made a video about it. lol
THIS game, was a fever dream of a memory, only i played it within my area. no other ps2 owners i knew had this, i played it back home and i swear it wasn't real, it wasnt real for decades. then i find it in a lockbox. like god this game is wild.
Remember really loving this game back in the day. This reminds me of game you should play from the same era, Ghosthunter also on PS2. It's not perfect but really enjoyed it.
Holy hand grenades! I never thought I'd see anyone do any sort of deep(ish) dive on this game! I adored it when it came out. I clearly need to download it and play it again. (Also, 16Volt was the shit, don't @ me.)
When I played this a couple months ago on ps4 hit definitely it me as as mid 2000s game especially the edginess and tattoos lol reminds me alot of that 360 game where the female protag uses multiple forms for puzzles and combat
"Man, Scree has a cadence and tone that sounds kinds like Andreas Katsulas. Sure would be cool to be led around a video game by G'Kar!" *looks it up* "Holy shit, it IS him!"
I completed this game recently. I actually dropped Red Dead Redemption 2 in favor of Primal and I had a lot more fun with it. The combat could do with some polish but otherwise fantastic game.
Oh my god I LOVED all the different transformations and weapons in this game! I remember dreaming once where I had a VR game of this where you had gloves that allowed you to control her arms to fight.
@@battlion507 The unique abilities each form Jen had and how they tied into the worlds were great. The revelation of who Scree really is was great too.
One of my favourite games of all time, yeah it's got issues but I love the world and characters. This truly deserves a kickass remake and finally it's sequel that was cancelled 💚
I had a demo of this game that I ended up playing a bunch, because that's what you do when you're a kid with a lot of free time. It probably says something that the demo starts at around the 27-minute mark on this video.
I remember this game! I remember people comparing it to my Buffy (Xbox) game, but once I played it I realized it had similarities... on paper... but yeah... not the same, at all.
All I know about this game was a demo I had that allowed me to play one level, where I would just keep switching to the gargoyle, turning into stone, grabbing a snack and watching the hot goth chick kill the monsters. I know that's not how it's supposed to be played, but honestly I had way more fun that way lol.
1 more thing. I've seen this at pawn shops flea markets, ect for next to nothing, seems like there could be a lot worse 5 buck investments out there. Is it worth a try?

I was disappointed by this game. For a game that promises transformation, the character model looks very "wearing a prosthetic latex forehead ala Star Trek TNG" rather than "transforms into a mythical creature" vibe.

Well said.
Still one of my PS2 favorites with Summoner 2 and The Suffering
So this is where that gargoyle avatar for PSN came from.
No bullshit I had no idea there was a game behind the avatar just thought it was a PS3 default
That's funny, I actually did know. Kind of surprising they used that avatar.
Well that's why I used that avatar in the first place back in 2008.
Holy shit

Full LP! Full LP! Full LP!
I would love to see that!
I hope matt can make the ps2-inspired third-person action game he dreams of

@@princemwamba5230 Besides Grimbeard.
"And then Blade comes in."
Yes.
I love how mad Matt gets at that stock 'breaking pottery' sound effect. I have that same feeling about the Wilhelm scream.

Andreas Katsulas is mostly known for his role on Babylon 5 and Hudson Lieck for her role on Xena: Warrior Princess.
Holy crap I was wondering why G'kar was playing on this window
Can't mention Sean Pertwee without talking about Dog Soldiers!
i know I'm quite randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Riley Dakota meh I use Flixportal. you can find it by googling :P -creed

Guys, look up the Japanese version of Primal and how much more kawaii her human form is and how horrible the monster forms look.
@@ghouliethousandtrouser2905 It's not uniquely Japanese. Quite a few Japanese games have been Americanized.

I really like that the BF (at least at the beginning here) didn't just leave her on the floor or something. They even held hands while running away.

Primal reminds me of God Of War and Spawn Eternal meshed together.
I had the demo of this game I remember having nightmares of the girl transforming... memories
I feel Primal could be revisited as a Matt x Crymetina LP? They make a great team.
I love this game
*INHALES DEEP* God I love that early ps2 jank!
"We probably in our hub world, girl." Fuck me I found that funny!

"Reminds me of an SSX Tricky character."
Kaori Nakajima?
YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS! Matt noticing Screw's odd fitting voice for his form, so good. I wish he got further playing with the demon form

I’m amazed they haven’t made a remake of this game I mean it’s got a call premise and the world and creature designs are cool

Great game and those graphics hold up really well
This is one of my favourite games on the PS2. ♥
We need this game back(again....)and a sequel!
I loved this game when it came out. At the time it was rare to see a game so story focussed that was fully voiced.
I forgot this game existed! I loved this as a preteen. Probably. I don't remember. It's so *made for teens.*
Hell yeah Primal's the shit fight me
Sony seems to love this alot, didn't it get Avatars on PSN and re released on both PS3 AND PS4?
I ALWAYS see this game in the used store but never knew what it was about. Thank you for showing this........ game????
edgeyberzerker potential playthrough ? 😆
majortom331 just because I did Death by Degrees doesn’t mean I’ll do this one. 😂 I still have to earn Dio mode in Jojos
You’re gonna have to do the first Bloodrayne dude. That game was fun but super janky.
My childhood!
this looks like an edgy Beyond Good and Evil except your piggo friend is a gargoyle
And you fight with the shoulder buttons
Had to stop mid video because I must play this for myself! Looks awsome!
God I loved this back when
A smooth Dinklage voice.
