"What did Alex do before the Prototype happened?" He was a diagnosed sociopath virus doctor. That's the brilliant part about Prototype's main character. You think it's Alex Mercer and it seems like there's a GTA-style gameplay/story disconnect, but then it reveals that Alex Mercer was a sociopath and all-around asshole and what you're actually playing at is the Virus mimicking him and growing beyond him. Then you realize the reason his sister was so confused when he shows up at the start, and all the characters that know him fail to predict what he'll do next, is because he's acting friendly - the virus just assumed Mercer is a better person than he was. In the end it turns out that a fucking Virus born out of a sociopaths memories is the most human and moral person in the game. It's amazing - it both justifies and questions the GTA "kill everyone it doesn't matter" instincts that most players have.

I found it interesting when you are in areas of the city where monsters and the army are fighting you could watch them or jump in the middle of it all and vs everyone.
I think the game is at it's best when you're almost at the peak of getting most upgrades but you're not super overpowered yet. Going to a military base and triggering several alerts, getting tanks and super soldiers and the virus monsters after you and surviving all of them with like a tiny little bit of health is so fun.
Prototype is such an amazing game, gameplay, the fun of it, mobility, slashing through huge crowds of civilians and enemies, the fun powers and shapeshifting is so amazing and should overshadow the not-so-good story, yet a pretty deep world
If you do make that series about game studio's sunsetted too soon, I have a sinking feeling a disproportionate amount of the episodes will end with "and then EA closed down the studio after it failed to meet unrealistic expectations".
Man... this was the game I got that made me buy my first Game Informer, Read the article top to bottom, and watched every gameplay footage, and wanted that grey hoodie/puffy black vest jacket look... THHHEEEENNN it got delayed for 2 years, and they changed the look of Alex, and gave him a leather jacket (which I still wanted). I was still hyped, then InFamous happened, and ALL my attention went to that. (Man, remember when BOTH games came out at the same time? Even Attack of the Show had to compare the differences! lol)
I agree, this had such an unfortunate timing in coming out with inFamous to which it could never hold a candle to, and eventually got overshadowed. It's a shame because this game is really fun too.

2's story just sucked. 1 wasn't a masterpiece but they threw out Alex's characterization completely and made him a big dumb villain while James had potential but he just ended up as a generic angry guy. He's like Aiden Pearce from Watch Dogs, grr how dare you malign my family imma destroy the families of anyone who happens to be in the way!
what i love about this game is that you can do whatever the hell you want in the overworld, and close to the end of the game you feel like a absolute tank, you feel powerful, indestructible. this is why i love and NEED A THIRD PROTOTYPE GAME xD just imagine what more powers you could expand from the second game
Prototype is one of my favorite open world games, right under Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Prototype plays incredibly similarly to H:UD, and I loved it as a spiritual successor. Radical Entertainment made 4 games that I absolutely love to death. Knowing that they were swept under the rug because Prototype 2 did well, but not well enough is very saddening. Hopefully the people behind the name continued to work on titles that they could be proud of. I would love to see your hot take on Prototype 2, as well as that "Gone Too Soon" show. That sounds like a great idea, Matt. Love your stuff, man.
Really enjoyed this game except for all the mutant fights, not because they were difficult, but because you would just get mobbed and every hit they throw places you in a stun phase or knocks you back. It got to the point where I just tried to avoid all situations with them.

Oh I forgot I'd love to see you play ZERO Katana, pretty neat gem that came out recently. Very hotline Miami blended with shadows die twice.
So, the thing about this game that always upset me is that eventually in the story (and spoilers for an old game here) you are informed you're NOT Alex Mercer but in fact just a sentient virus who THINKS he's Alex Mercer. And... that's okay, I suppose, but then suddenly every other plot point is dropped because every other point was about Alex Mercer's friends and family. It's just he gets told he's not really Alex Mercer and just stops caring INSTANTLY. it always bugged me.
I missed the sick ground spike attack you can do with the claw power. I was a bit upset they didn't put it into Prototype 2. But the tendril power carnage easily made up for it.
My favorite part of prototype, is when the prototype says "it's proto time*, and then prototypes all the other prototypes. Is truly is one of the prototypes of the year.

If there was ever an argument to be made for narrative and context being important to gaming, its the "rivalry" between these two series. Infamous 1 & 2 just leave more of an impact with memorable characters and relatable stakes. Still... I REALLLY want another prototype.

It didn't have the polish and the story was nothing but pound for pound fun factor, this beat infamous in my book. I mean, being chased into a military base, eating a general then morphing into a solider and blaming some other guy... never got old.
I really liked the biological/infectious style of these games. The pseudo stealth aspects and hunting things were great too. FIRE MISSION FIRE MISSION MAKE IT HOT IN THE KILLBOX is still a weird line to be stuck in my head. This was one of those games that kept using OTW as a term all the damn time too.
This game ain't so bad, but once you reach end game, the fun is lost since all sorts of strong units start dog pilling into you, no matter how many upgrades you have, they just keep stunning you and it's pretty hard to keep playing.
I rented the first Prototype when it came out. I was able to beat the story, but the Platinum is too damn hard. I did get the Plat for Prototype 2, which was much less frustrating. I bought the PS4 remaster bundle for $15 in 2015, but haven't played either in years after I Plat'd the Prototype 2 remaster.
I got the ps4 editions a few years ago and i gotta say i like the 2nd one more. Its more of the the same but i think they nailed the main character and villain(lol) in a better way. Definitely was a fun series to playthrough, though i always skip the cutscenes.
I would have executed the story differently but in terms of powers and character look when I was in middle school and wanted to make games alex Mercer concept wise was EXACTLY how I wanted my main character even down to the clothes powers and emo voice lol as kid I felt like they cheated me 😂
I think Prototype, Infamous, and Crackdown all mostly peaked at the first game. Without taking them in a different direction there isn't much you can add to make a sequel feel justified.

I liked this game, scratched that itch from Hulk Ultimate Destruction (Which has still never been topped for this type of game)
Infamous was probably more polished but I preferred the game where you could easily jump over fences.
