The CGI does look a bit clunky now, but the characterizations are great, the humor is quirky and doesn't fall flat, and the Hopper, the antagonist, is portrayed very well by the "then untarnished" Kevin Spacey. Thanks for the review!

I think it makes sense they tore him apart, think about it, all of them were trying to bite at him, so they more than likely fought over his body, ripping him to pieces. Hopper would have been too big for just one little chick to consume anyway. Finally his death must have been far too gruesome which is why the screen cut to black, further implying he was ripped apart

The rock reference is mephor flick used for dot. She was venting to him about not being able to fly. To which Flick finds a rock and tells her to pretend it's a seed. And basically tells her that "seed" will grow into a huge tree, but it will take time. However dot does not understand where he is getting at and says " but it's a rock". Fast forwards to the scene where flick is banished and dot flies over to the circus carriage. Where flick is deflated and has given up on himself. To which then dot flies away and brings back the rock then says " pretend it's a seed okay?" Because she now knows what flick meant and is now telling flick the same thing. However the warrior circus bugs don't understand the context of the rock and thinks its an "ant things" lol so they gift Anne a rock 😂./ which basically a nod to her growing and improving herself.
Hope this helps explain it! Sorry for the long comment! I loved your review. I loved this film so much, as it made me laugh a lot.

The only part of this movie that still irritates me, and while it IS understandable, it's still infuriating, the colony's reaction to finding the truth. They feel betrayed, lied to, and banish Flick. But they also...totally abandon the bird plan. Like...WHAT?! I mean, not only did they totally abandon the plan, that they could have just taken over like "ok, we're getting rid of Flick, but we can still use the plan he left behind". But no. They just leave it to gather dust like idiots, idiots who practically WANT to be walked all over for the rest of their lives! And, another thing I didn't agree with was, the queen's audacity to claim that Flick was thinking of himself first. Like, ok, I guess I understand what she was going for, that he kept the truth from them to save face, but he did ALL of this, going to the city, away from the safety of the colony, putting together a plan to scare the grasshoppers away, all for THEIR ungrateful asses! If I were Flick, I'd be really fucking pissed at them and leave of my own volition, leaving them to the fates they're resigned themselves to.

But hell if I would've stayed there after that.
And the way they treat Flick annoys me... During the end, when he said his place was with the colony and Atta agreed, even child-me was muttering "yeah, until he makes another mistake and you all hate him again..."
This is something that always pissed me off about those "underdog" stories. It never seemed people went "okay, maybe they always mess up, but that doesn't give us the right to bully and humiliate them", it always felt like "oh, they ARE useful after all, let's be kind to them now".

@@midnightfiles Here's what I would've done. After they rescue Dot, the Circus Bugs come to clear things up, but also assure Flik that neither he or the Circus Bugs understood the full context. HOWEVER, while they are bummed considering that Flik risked his life to get help, the Queen and Princess Atta are more than greatful that they saved Dot from the bird considering that even Hopper is scared of birds, so they are allowed to stay for as long as they like. However when Flik is alone with Princess Atta, Atta confesses that she and the council just wanted Flik to stay away while they gathered food, but Flik is like "I don't blame you for not believing in me given how I embarrassed you in front of Hopper.
As for when PT Flea arrives, this scene could instead play out like the scene from "Cars" where during the neon light party at Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen is suddenly found by the press, and is forced to be packed up and taken to LA for the big race, even though he clearly doesn't wanna leave cause he's grown to love Radiator Springs. Like wise, when PT Flea comes to take the circus bugs back, we get an emotional goodbye between Flik and the Circus bugs, but Flik really grew to like them and is depressed when they were forced to go back with PT. However the circus bugs are clearly fed up with PT's crap considering he only wants them back cause "Flaming Death" is what he can easily fall back on financially, so they decide "No! Flik needs our help! We're not circus bugs! We're warrior bugs!", so they hyjack the ride and head back to Ant Island.

its actually a thing with ants. They have a line to follow and if something blocks the line they get like the ant said "lost". If you see an ant and if you draw a circle around it he'll panic and then just stop moving. They cant find the line so they cant find their way home. Also they even got sprays that's meant to erase their lines so they cant go into your house. They have scouts so if you find one ant in your home that means they'll be back with a colony cause the scout made a line leading to where the food is. If you find their line and spray it then they cant find their way in. It's not uncanny, it's just attention to detail

Though the ant thing is probably partly trying to humanize insects and partly most probably don't know that ants and bees are related, termites and cockroaches are related, those two groups are too far removed from each other on the evolutionary tree to share the same adaptations so it wouldn't be wrong if either ant related movie had simply replaced their main characters with termites, buuut ig the little squishy bois aren't cute enough so they just had to go with the armored 40% leg creatures ^^'

I think many of them are pretty cute and cool, but that is not majority's opinion. Unfortunately people may find them disgusting, but that is not inherent, because many people are fine eating water arthropods like crabs, but might think pill bugs are nasty, even tho both are a kind of crutstacean.
Termites have very similar society as ants or bees, but as you said they have more egalitarian structure as the workers and soldiers can be males as, well and termite kings exist.
Do people find termites less cute because they are cockroaches? Is this fact even very well known? Even tho most cockroaches are not house pests, but those that are, can be very bad thing for the place.
At least Antz film had termites there but only as enemies, and ants had 6 legs. And then there is the Bee movie, but I think it had other very strange stuff in it as well.

      @discordiacreates6669 Рік тому

@@turkoositerapsidi yeah I am one of those people that find most arthropods cute and actually moreso because they're so alien from mammals on the surface, though do share multiple same organs with larger and more complex species even though they're much smaller and sometimes contorted into different shapes just because of how they need to fit inside of sometimes very strange outer body plans. Is nice though when any animated piece puts the correct number of legs on insects and spiders respectively and there's definitely films that do so, like the animated and pretty uncanny looking James and the Giant Peach movie adaptation
To answer your question though on termites, I believe most stop at the fact that termite and capenter ant species (of which there are multiple of both in different areas of the world) chew dead and especially decaying wood and have no interest beyond how quickly they can kill them. Also sad to note the part about them especially going for already decaying wood over dry and still structurally stable pieces, so they're often both blamed for failing house foundations when they're actually attracted to certain mold and fungus species that they feed on so they're not truly after the wood, but what's likely already taking a hold inside of decaying pieces. So, that being said, I believe most people are currently unaware that ants and bees are not that far removed on the evolutionary tree and neither are termites and cockroaches, though the latter group should honestly be a bit easier to figure out based on some pretty easy to spot observations anyone can make. Unlike ants, termites have a more compressed body plan and very short neck, a soft abdomen not designed for defense and are usocial (not 100% spelling but isn't unsocial), though the last bit applies to all colonial species. Now look at what cockroaches look like and how they behave because they also have the same compressed body plan, some with the top plate of their thorax actually covering their neck and the back of their head, they also tend toward setting up a colony of both males and females of multiple different generations and a lotta them are attracted to wood and leaf litter. Termites, are just a branch off of the cockroach tree that decided to shrink in size and become farmers while ants are probably specifically a branch off of the wasp tree that decided the ground is awfully cozy so lets stay underground forever. Why exactly I'm guessing wasp in specific is not only due to the similarity in body plan to many wasp species, but also that a wingless wasp species does actually exist known as a velvet ant due to just how closely it resembles its ant cousins. Said wasps are more visibly fuzzy compared to most ant species though but they are quite pretty. They are also asocial as some wasp species are (namely spider wasps and other parasitic species that prey on caterpillars) and have an incredibly painful and potentially dangerous sting ^^' please look but don't touch unless gloves are involved and you're very gentle with them

I will admit, when I watched this movie over 20 years ago, I actually got traumatized by Hopper getting eaten alive. It still disturbs me even to this day. Also, I have three young ant colonies and so every time I see reviews about this movie or even about "Ants", I have to remind myself that they're fictional characters and that they're not gonna follow the logic of actual ants such as how male ants don't work like worker ants (they in fact have wings and their only purpose is to mate with virgin queen ants from other colonies), queen ants don't pass the ranks down from generation to generation, all queens leave their birth colony to (hopefully) start their own, and baby ants don't start out as looking the same as their adult counterparts (they're not like, say, the praying mantis, which start out as basically baby versions of the adult counterparts but without wings) and instead start out as larvae after hatching. Yeah, I can definitely tell that I'd have a hard time trying to look past the cartoon logic when it comes to the ants since I've done my research on the actual ants and have three young colonies of my own. But at least I'd enjoy the humor and the plot

For some reason, I preferred Antz over Bugs Life? I think bc the plot to Antz felt fresh compared to BL. You should give Antz a shot, there's a legit horrifying war scene. The plot does seem like it doesn't really know where to go, but it was def different.

In my opinion, I've always found the animation to be beautiful in this film. It has that nice glossy feeling to it, like with Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and Cars, which are among some of my favourite pixar movies. Sure, it couldn't hold a candle to what they're making now (not even close). Though, I will admit that the story is a bit "cliché" I don't care. Flik was an amazing protagonist who deserved the respect he earned in the end. Atta... I didn't like her as much as a kid, but she's grown on me and I can see why she's so hard on him throughout the movie, but I'll always appreciate her for standing up to Hopper when he's about to crush him. Dot was a welcomed tritagonist and I liked the dynamic she shared with Flik. She was the driving force behind him coming home and helped him to expose Hopper's plan to squish the Queen. As for the circus bugs, well...
I've always liked Rosie. She was the kindest to Flik and always believed in him. Sure, she was frightened about the prospect of fighting the grasshoppers and tried to leave, which is fair since she was gonna be drafted into war essentially. But I'll always applaud her for remaining loyal to Flik. Manny was a strict but fair-toned mantis who was critical of Flik at the beginning, but warmed up to him overtime and helped keep the grasshoppers busy whilst he was setting up the bird. Dim was a gentle giant and I liked the fact that he vouched for Flik in his hour of need by mentioning that he helped bring value back into their lives. Heinrich, Francis and Slim, I thought they were a fun trio and I liked how Francis gradually changed from being a short-tempered schmuck into an even-tempered, self-sacrificing hero. Gypsy felt underused but I liked how sweet she was too. (I had a crush on her as a kid alongside Atta.) Lastly, there's Tuck and Roll. They're... fine. A bit obnoxious and stereotypical but were funny in moderation.
Hopper was a great villain though (despite the fact he's voiced by Kevin Spacey, who is a well-known sex offender). As for Molt? I liked him decently enough and was glad to see him redeemed near the end. Thumper was scary to me as a kid, but as an adult, he still gives me chills. P.T. Flea? I hated as a kid... but he's grown on me. As for the council, I didn't like the old chaps who kept badgering Flik. The Queen was a good parental figure and actively pushed Atta to do better. Dr. Flora cared for the colony too. (I can't remember the ant's name who helps direct the others around a leaf. But he was in the council too.)
Music was very well-orchestrated. The voice acting was decent, even the child actors did a good job, especially Dot's.
    Overall... 8/10. Good Movie.

Fun fact: One of the inspirations for this film was Seven Samurai from 1954.
I remember watching this movie on VHS as a kid. Looking back now, the character designs are pretty uncanny with the humanized teeth and eyes, but I'd imagine they wouldn't look as endearing to children if they had more realistic eyes and faces. XD
The ending with Hopper getting eaten alive by the baby chicks was and is still really disturbing, but the chicks are also really cute. XD Kudos to Kevin Spacey's performance and the rest of the cast members for bringing their characters to life.
Also, who else remembers the cute animation short before the movie about the two old men playing checkers? And who else remembers the bloopers at the end of the film? XD
Now I'm curious about your thoughts on Monsters, Inc and Bolt.

Hopper getting eaten by Mama Bird's chicks reminds me of Michael Crichton's novel: *"THE LOST WORLD"* where the main villain Lewis Dodgson
is being fed to the infants of a T. rex family (one of the infants has a broken leg thanks to Dodgson as he tried to steal eggs from the Rex Nest), which was changed in the film adaptation
into Peter Ludlow's demise inside the S.S. Venture (though it could've been more effective if they didn't replaced the original music cue: "Ludlow's End" or cut an earlier scene back in "Site B" that shows Junior rex getting injured by a drunk & trippy Ludlow).
