Wheel weight will effect acceleration but to a greater effect is deceleration and rotational inertia, "turn in response." Great video showing just how much the weight of the tires and wheels will effect the cars performance.
53 wow thats heavy. Get something lighter. Funny Dave "22b" and I were talking about rims in this size the other day. I run 235 40 18 on my wagon on enkei ekm3 5x114. I'm looking to do a sedan conversion. Wonder how heavy my enkei's are lol.
Andrew Berndt yeah I’m not sure what size was oem but I know what the sti rims looked like on the 06/07 stis. The gold bbs rims. I tried to get some for my 11 hatch when I had it before my golf r. OEM look is always best in my opinion for majority of all cars. Ones they use on other Subaru’s etc if that’s makes sense.
In weighing the bbs setup, also include the spacer weight as its part of the rotational mass. 30mm spacer, I'm guessing ~3lbs each. For the 1552's my guess is 54lbs each. Performance gains would depend on a combination of overall diameter between the two and their weight. If both are equal, whichever is lighter assuming the 17's. Awesome vids man!
Hey Bucky! Great video!! The weight for the 18" is 48 by the way! :))) The launches looked great! The bbs wheels look the best! I did not think so until that last shot of the launch!
I prefer the BBS wheels. The thinner spokes of the 17's with those spacers looks rad! Plus less weight is always a +. Also, great job with the impact wrench! 😉😉😉😛
I just put a new daily driver setup on my '11 GV yesterday. Method MR502 w/ 245/45R17. Seeing this I am going to get the scale out & compare my OEM 18" Enkei that have Bridgestone RE-71R's on em for track setup.
Hi there bucky thanks for the vid, lock down gets a little easier with videos like this. I loved the look of the tarmacs and am struggling to answer your question. Its a driving car so 'go' should always beat 'show'. However the use of spacers always worries me and the stress they may cause on the bearings/hubs. If this isnt an issue then i say 'go' as tbh they look great too. If there is then 'show' wins and id live with 0.5 sec loss on a pull. Typical british answer lol but theres always things to consider........keep the vids coming and stay safe.
Are you confident in those spacers? Seem to remember that was one of the reasons you switched. Anyway.. I would love a Built not bought shirt, but you don't ship to the UK.. Maybe I could ship to my daughter in Philly and pick it up on the next visit. Thank you for the joy. Love to you.
Nice comparison. This is why I still run 16's w/ wrx front brakes and legacy rears rather than brembos. Gets the best braking for the wheel size and keeps the weight down.
Definitely the 17s!! I found 18s are good for sealed surface rallying and high speed cornering but for acceleration and mixed driving I would be on 17s... i have gone back to 16s on my version 6 type r but thats on standard sti suspension... love the content bucky keep it up :)
Get some Method MR503 wheels Buck! My 2020 STI has 19x8.5 wheels that weigh a ginormous 53Lb. I’m getting a set of MR503’s in WRC size 18x8. Throw a set on Cup 2 tires on. Total weigh 41Lb. That’s a 48Lb unsprung weight loss! Like throwing a big adult man out of the car.
Seems like it's worth making the change! Personally, I dig how the stock BBS rims look more than the Tarmacs too. I'm guessing the Tarmacs and tires are right around 51.5 lbs btw
Haven’t finished to video but wanted to guess. 52.3 on the 18”s? Your videos are always entertaining and I appreciate everything you do! From a skater and Bugeye owner!
Go over Show! I work at a racetrack where the members have the top cars that can be Bought. One of their friends noticed I was starting to mod my '11 GV & I can sense at least one of them feels threatened. Haha It's alright, they have too look to find the employee lap times. My current lap time was after only 5 laps. Found out the hard way that I need to have at least a 1/2 tank of fuel so it doesn't starve. Looking at knocking off a big Lambo & an '05 Ford GT this season.
Your "garden edging" lip already have a tear in it, on the passenger side? I don't really like the look of the Fifteen52s, but not a fan of the BBS look either. I'm the type that prefers thinner spokes and a lot more of them. Out of those two though, I'd rock the Fifteen52s. What's the weight of the spacers? I mean, you should add that weight to the BBS. My guess, the Fifteen52s simply look heavier. I'm guessing like 55 lbs.
@@BuckyLasekOfficial No, I know you got it from...I don't remember the company name. Some material that's like mudflaps or something. I just quoted it, since it's currently a one off item and doesn't kind of have a name.
Removing unsprung weight has such huge benefits! Every 1lb of unsprung weight that's removed can be equivalent to anything from 10 to 30lb of sprung weight (so I've read). Probably why your seeing such huge gains from a small change. All about those gains! 0.5 seconds is a leap!
Tarmac 18x8.5 without the tires is 26.5lb plus that tire is going to be around the 49lb. But now you are going to have the extra weight from the spacers on the 17'. Good job Bucky😎🤙
So... I am a huge fan of Fifteen52 wheels. But. They do tend to be a bit heavier than most! Are you attributing the better "Go" to the wheel diameter, weight, or other? Thoughts? I obviously prefer the look of the Fifteen52's, but the gains with stockers are incredible!
37.6 lbs. It’s so weird to see 1552 wheels so popular outside the Volkswagen community. 1552v2 has been a vw company for nearly 30 yrs. Their original name was VW Sport. Then 1552 before Brad closed the business for a few years. Hence the v2. I remember Brad talking about starting a wheel line. The first ones were reproduction of a vw factory wheel. The snowflakes. The tarmac were an homage of a no longer made Speedline model which was popular in the vw scene in the late 90’s that Brad had on his mk2 GTI. Bucky. The Turbomac’s would look killer in 17” on your subie
Fifteen 52 looked lighter when you lifted it. Go instead of show but you could grab some revolution's made from magnesium compound which look dapper and was on the WRC Subaru back in the day. They are six spoke however if you like 6 spokes and rare to come by but you seem to have good connections bucky😉
Definitely go for go,with 18s you will have more rotational drag, plus extra strain on the driveshafts.JDM GC8 Sti's originally came with 16.Your BBS's are of a P1 from over here in the U.K.
Nice! 17s are much better looking to me personally (I have the same gold sti BBS wheels lol 5x100) roughly 44 pounds would be my closest guess in tire setup weight. sick video Bucky‼️🤙
If you want to slay all day, 17"s, and that size looks the best on GC and GD's. Despite that being said, I recently went back to 18"s on my GDA. I realized that is awesome for daily driving/weekend touge/track. Though heavier 18"s roll comfortably over all the messed up roads in the Bay Area. Also, added grip and stopping to combat against reckless drivers in traffic.
I have Advan RS-Ds on my Forester STI. The stock STI 18" wheels and tires were ~50lbs the RS-DS were 41. Mine are 18" X 8j et47 5x100. They look sick too.
17s with a set of kontrol pro or gravel rally ksports and slightly thicker tires! If you are ever looking for suspension let me know, we would love to hook you up with some Ksport gear!
17" all the way, maybe even 16". depending on tire size, your gearing ratio would be decreased, which means faster acceleration. it's something that hondas live by. my ITR has a 5.0 final drive, which means i accelerate faster than those with a 4.7 final drive, or a 4.3 final drive. you should look into final drive gearing. another thing that really gets me excited is steering ratios... make your car's steering lock to lock faster improves it's drivebaility through a road coarse or auto cross coarse, and makes it overall funner to drive. i'm not an export in those matters, but just things that i know would make a car overall more fun in incremental ways.

I’m guessing 46.3 lbs for the fifteen52’s. My question is, what are the tire sizes of both wheels? I’m interested in learning whether it’s rotating mass or gearing that made the difference.
If always ran stuff that was more function over form. Those 18’s look fantastic but I would stick to a 17 for the handling/speed and slightly taller sidewall.
Are the overall diameters of the tyres the same... Smaller wheels (overall, outer tyre diameter) offer better acceleration as it takes less time to do a complete revolution, larger wheels / overall tyre diameter (no surprise) take longer so accelerate slower, but will offer higher top speed & the smaller overall diameter will have less top speed (like changing sprocket sizes on a motorcycle, it’s a trade off). In theory when going from a 17” to an 18” wheel you should have lost 1/2” of tyre sidewall so the outer diameter will remain the same (adjusting this will also throw your speedo out as well as affecting acceleration).
Thinking any weight difference should include the spacers and spacer nuts. Didn't get a good look at the tires on the BBS wheels, but I bet you can find some lighter rubber to make it even better. Curious about the tire sizes, too. Smaller diameter really helps acceleration.
Did you do any 0-60 logs on the Accessport to see if it's actually making a better time? I love the look of both the wheels. Those launches with the BBS wheels on were sick!

32 lbs is my guess. The 5 spoke 18's definitely look killer, but that's a nice gain. Also cool seeing that definite lag/boost switchover in the 3rd gear pull with a car as well sorted as this, makes me feel a bit better about my mildly tuned 05 XT.
17”s look better. It’s nice to see just a little more sidewall.
Jason Carlson I will be able to put a larger tire on as well than what are on there now👍🏼

Brandon Libby diameter is the same
If always ran stuff that was more function over form.
If they pick up better as the BBS are lighter & the outer tyre diameter is the same I’ll shut up 🤣
