We tried something different with this video. It also took us a lot of testing, back and forth, and script revisions. So if you liked this video, please give it a like and share it with your friends. Thank you!
I really like it. Would have been cool if you could've gotten some actual TASers to help you out, but it is still super cool.
I liked it.
cool to see the ZoomZike shoutout! Next time you're doing a Mario Party vid, have him on to do the voiceover!
This video is written like an actual research paper and I love it
@RehXlim SusXej ZedXnem AicXrag well, I for one think that's a pretty accurate summation of how people use the term - basically any time something doesn't go their way, like an election, or a gaming awards show, people decry it as "rigged"
We all have that one friend that spends ages looking at the map, just to roll a one.
I'm that friend lol
It's also me! XD
The absolute worst
My brother
The die is skewed towards higher rolls for Donkey Kong because Toad knows that if Donkey Kong loses he will rip their fucking head off.
It's difficult to argue with the logic behind the "Let The Wookiee Win" algorithm.
I dont wanna piss off donkey kong you've seen what he is capable of
"Let the wookie win." - C3P0
That makes a lot of sense
And then Mario will eat it to grow a few inches😝
Missed out on “ the sound theory is indeed not a sound theory “
But hey, that's just a theory. A game theory. Thanks for watching.
They didn't mention if they tried shouting numbers in japanese. Would be interesting if it was a non-translated feature.
Also at 1:05 missed out on "its worth understanding how the dice actually rolls"
Couldn’t even hear it!
I knew it was bs the first time I played on an emulator and tried to *re-do my roll.*
@Pinchars ABitch LMAOOO 😭😭 True. I couldn't let Donkey Kong b*tch ass just walk all over me though bro
Yooo its Primm's hood cinema. I love the videos brotha
Doesn't that make it NOT rigged? You tried to rig it, and it held you to the original random number.
yooo!!! love your channel bro big up to the homie
@@Enaronia
Rigging is done by the house. The player can cheat, but they can't rig.
"The term rigged is in the eye of the beholder" is something someone rigging dice would say...
small addition: RNG is usually based on the internal clock of a machine. Executing the same code at a different time can yield different results.
many games also use the inputs of the player to influence RNG seed values instead of using set seeds
@@lordomacron3719 This is generally only done when a machine does not have an internal clock though. I don't remember the actual content of the video but because it's Mario I'd assume it's about Nintendo machines without internal clock. So you're probably right.
@@NaamloosDev well I just pointing that dev use multiple methods to generate Random numbers
@@lordomacron3719 Yes! and you're entirely correct.
So your saying there’s a chance?
Been watching DYKG for years, but I must say, I really enjoyed this new formatting! Can't wait to see what follows next. :)
Me too!
Love your content, Dazz
Hi dazz

maybe the true skill were the friends we lost along the way
We're playing Mario Party so we're losing friends along the way.
Or the controllers . . .
@@hdezn26 or hands if your playing Mario party 2
@@Unkill That's true.
This makes Mario Party 1 even more evil now.
Mario Party: Existential Dread Edition
"You have no control over your own destiny!"
Except for forks in the road, mini games, items, boo, chance time and bowser.
You still have choices to make and some minigames require skill.
If you could control where you went exactly and others didn't know how to time it, it'd be unfair to them
3:49, ah yes the mini-game that ripped apart the skin of my palm
I can still remember when I was visiting some friends they gave me always the controller with the broken stick so lost many times, but whenI found the palm teqnic that was first time I won a full game against them in Mario Party 1. If it was worth it by winning my first full game in Mario party by then I would say yes but right now I would say not really worth it to sacrifice your hand for a game.
You fool, that game was nothing compared to the tug of war minigame from Mario Party 1 which required you to spin the control stick like a madman.
@@AzureRoxe I said both could made you rotate the stick like a mad man but you lost more in paddle battle. What I mean is inThug o War with a broken stick or if you do nothing you will lose 15 coins if you are solo vs 3 but in Paddle Battle you lost more coins at the end. But in the end the results is that with a good control stick Thug o War is probably worse becuse in paddle Baddle with a good control stick you decrease the coins you lose but it is reversed if the control stick is broken or bad already.
A Turtle always knew Mario party was rigged.
Turtle approved?
What else does thou know?
Mario: “Wait, it’s all rigged.”
Toad, with a gun: “Always has been.”
Underrated comment
Toad: The truth is.... The games been rigged from the start
Sorry, pallie... This party was rigged from the start!
I keep rolling 1s. Guess it looks like I've got a 24 star run of bad luck.
Patrolling the Mushroom Kingdom almost makes you wish for a Koopa-ular winter.

Malcolm Holmes: Hey, you should be careful. People have died over collecting Stars.

Of course it is. Computer can not create randomness as we see it. It’s all predetermined same with shuffle on music players. Anything classed as random on a computer is never truly random as we believe the word means
This is an interesting topic. I wouldn’t necessarily calle the dice “rigged” unless the game was doing some kind of decision making to help one player over another (say making sure that cpus of higher difficulties always get higher numbers, for example). Not even in the case where the game selects a number one time and it will always give you that result no matter how long you wait to hit the dice so long as it went through the same process for all the players.
Agreed. But I still prefer it be based on WHEN you hit the dice even if it's just RNG. Mechanically keeping the illusion is something I can appreciate coming off this video even if it realistically doesn't matter. Still would bother me if it was pre-determined like MP1 and MPDS
6:14 "The slower speed makes you think you have more control over getting the result you want." as Toad clearly hits a 10 and gets a 1 XD
Actually he hits the 1 which came after the 10, you just need to slow down the footage enough
Thanks for answering a question I've had for over a decade. At least I now know to blame the game next time I get a garbage roll.
Been playing lots of the GameCube Mario Parties and coincidentally this video comes out around the same time, sometimes I feel like the dice are rigged but the fun and random factor are what make it Mario Party, Team ZoomZike! Let’s go!
Mario Party: The game where you're in 4th place and you roll a 1 almost every turn for the entire game while all your friends are rolling 10s.
As someone who's spent WAY too much time analyzing the rolls for TheRunawayGuys in various Mario parties, this lands itself as sufficient evidence for "the computer just hates you"
I don't know how many writers worked on this episode, but some of them need to learn that it's *one die, many dice*. You can't have "a dice", you have "a die".
Feels as if "die" was European and "dice" American
These types of questions can always be answered by the Speedrun community.
Finally, a Dream reference
So you're saying my friendships were destined to fail...
Nintendo didn’t authorize those friendships your luck they let you live
Love this video. Reaching out to speedrunners is great, I always like when people who are experts at their game get a chance to flex their knowledge.
"Yes" is my initial response to the question in the title, without having watched the video.
i really like how you guys showed consulting with the experts and speedrunners in this video. Good stuff.

Identifying Luck MP5 comes out on Christmas Day
That was pretty enjoyable, I'd love to see more like this.
We did a lot of script revisions for this, I hope you all enjoy it!
It's great! Only wish it would've gone into whether or not the CPU's rolls are rigged, particularly based on their difficulty settings.
The fact the title is something Game Theory would do scares me, but MatPat is being consumed by FNAF rn, so I doubt we would have a regular video from him
I can't imagine the amount of research. Incredible job!

This video was sick. Y’all have really been knocking it outside of the park lately!
I’ve been watching DYKG for almost 10 years now. It was one of the first UA-cam subscriptions I had in high school. I live this channel and everything you guys do. Please never stop with the awesome information!
This one needed Dan Ryckert to explain how Mario Party is a game of skill.
The only skill you need to win is putting up with playing a 50 turn game of random BS in one sitting.
Came here through Dr.Lava and saw my boy Zoomzike mentioned, nice.
Awesome video guys! :D
Now THAT’s some good script editing!
The absolute legend himself
I very much enjoyed this video. I’d love to see more of this kind of video in the future, since it technically still falls under the idea of “did you know gaming” so it makes sense

I really like the format of researching a particular topic of a game, its a nice change of pace from constantly finding new game facts to make a lengthy videos out of. Hope we can see more, or even let fans suggest particular game topics to explore
Toy Freddy: This whole Party Series Is totally rigged!!!
Great video! Would love to see more like it in the future. It reminds me of some of the speed run videos that are broken down by Karl Jobst, SummoningSalt, and EZscape. Fascinating to watch to say the least.
A friend of mine insisted that the dice RNG was rigged to favour certain characters a long before Super Mario Party. He insisted that for example Mario Party 7 favours Toad above every other character
Mario Party Dice rolls are like a metaphor for Life. It’s predetermined.
When I don't get a star, yes it is! Bullshit!
Mario Party Advance Tour is such a huge part of my childhood that I never remembered.
ZoomZike representation! Let's go!!
IL MP5 coming out on Christmas Day!
Nice
I remember there was a rumour for the early Mario Party games, particularly 3... that the dice animating up and down as it spins corresponded with the number. If the dice were towards the top point of the animation as you hit it, you'd get a high number and vice versa.
Confirmation bias
Did you know about the new trend about the Mario Party DS anti piracy thing?
It's likely fan made. Still pretty cool though
@@krubbington it is fanmade bruh
ahh a Fan Of My Game
So much work and research for such a simple question. It was a very important question for me though so thanks!
in conclusion dont bother yourself trying to get a certain number just hit the block the moment your turn start
Speaking as a scientist, I wouldn't describe pseudo-random numbers as "rigged". There are actually a lot of reasons that pseudo-random numbers are preferable, especially when it comes to error-checking and ensuring that the rolls are fair (or as fair as intended). Truly random fair numbers are difficult to generate and work with - in theory you can seed them off the game clock, but then you're really trading one source of pre-determined pseudo-randomness for another. The only thing you'd really gain from a more dynamic rng is the ability to save-scum with an emulator.
Why is this even a video. We all know it's yes
It would be cool to see how stuff like this actually works like how the "Retro Game Mechanics Explained" youtuber shows and explains stuff
Mario Party should never be rigged, as the RNG in those games are already soul crushing.
Deep dives on specific rumors/whatever is pretty cool. I’d like to see more like this tbh.
“Are the numbers truly random? Yes but actually no”
Mario party 2 (and maybe 3) has an actual pattern but it's fast for anyone to do, TAS videos actually are able to get specific rolls (look up 999 coins in 7/8 turns [I don't remember which, either way it's TAS])
You did ALL that playing and testing, when you could've just easily used a save state? That would answer the question in about 5 mins.
Wow that is true. 😆
No, because there might be multiple factors that effect the outcome. They not only confirmed this, but pinpointed exactly when it happens. Experiments need to account for variables, and designed in a way so that those variables can be identified.
I feel like putting the actual footage of the testing you guys did will be better than random mario party footage playing.
This would've been better as an audio clip than a vid
I see, there's no skill huh?
Just RNG, That's sad...
Very nice video. I do disagree about Mario Party 6's mic though, unless I got really lucky while playing the single player mode, but there is an actual higher chance of getting the number you want if you say it in the mic. Unless I got the number I wanted (5x 1's in a row to get mini-games fast) by pure RNG. You can see if you did it if you get the bonus 'matched number with mic!' at the end.
*loads gun*
“The truth is, the game was rigged from the start!”
This was great. I'd love to see more research videos into game mechanic questions like this!
"Piracy is no Party"
My dad would always close his eyes or look away from the screen as he swung the Wiimote every time he used a Twice or Thrice Candy in Mario Party 8. He always seemed to roll higher numbers that way.
Although the method was entirely unbased superstition and clearly had no influence over the numbers, the result were actually convincing enough oddly.
Oh the memories...
So the game awards were playing Mario Party, those bastards.
Actually Mario Party 6 does allow you to control the dice as stated, however only on 1 roll per playthrough
Fantastic video, DYKG. While your usual videos is some of my favorite content on UA-cam, I would love more stuff like this.
This was actually a pretty neat type of video.
You should definitely do more of these...
But please, do more than JUST Nintendo videos. Maybe take a proper look into the stats of CTR:NF for instance.
This was a great video. I would love for you to colab with ZoomZike some more in the future!
This was a real fascinating look into this! The format was great, too, so by all means do more in this style!
THANKS FOR TAKING THE JOY OUT OF THIS, TOO!
I don't give a shit about Mario Party but this was super interesting. I definitely think in-depth dives on a certain topic should be a mainstay on this channel, along with the classic rapid-fire trivia.
If you've ever watched a ZoomZike video, then you know the answer to this question already
I really enjoyed this type of video, would love to see more.

Is uh... Is that the Sunshine file select screen? It basically is. The flowers and the watermelons are gone in Sunshine. And the tree is going the other way, but that's the Sunshine file select screen.
I remember discovering the semi rigged dice scenarios as a kid in MP1, when trying to reroll my turn after getting rolls of 1 or 2 too many times or attempting to force a happening, so this being “discovered” by you guys like 20 years later is funny, and also remembering trying to test it on other versions to see if it carried to newer games.
If someone found a way to manipulate RNG during multiplayer minigames, that would be absolutely groundbreaking.
At last, an actual documented video that will serve me as an excuse whenever i lose and need to pour some salt.
This is quite upsetting. Good work, cracked this case wide open.
If you ever get a chance, it would be cool to see the same analysis done to Pokémon catching throughout the series. There have been a load of times on emulation, throughout multiple games, where I have made catch attempts and reset the save state for it to do the exact same number of "wiggles" even when changing the ball type. Makes it seem like it chooses the outcome before the ball is even thrown.
I like this new format. You should do more videos about pointed questions.
Really cool video, I like this format!
With that said, Mario Party always give me some thoughts with his strange dice, now I know it wasn't just me ahah!
Fiends Without Benefits would have been a great contact for this video as well!
Interesting video and great research guys
This seems like A LOT of work, and I a very happy you did it. You gave me closure.
Thank you ❤️
2:30. Yeah I tested that with an emulator a few years ago and it pissed me off when I learnt that!
RNG = training to be a gambler in a casino
I never knew there was this much to the Mario Party dice.
I like the empirical approach! It would also be cool to see some analysis of the source code by programmers (in cases where it's possible) to get further insights.
I loved this style of video. Super in depth and really interesting
