I read an interview somewhere where they asked Iizuka why this "Handheld" celebration didn't have gameboy advance or Game Gear games represented, iizuka chuckled and said something like "The game gear games? Those are too old"
Right. So best replace them with something more trendy and new like...Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, 1991. Sigh.

Amen to that, everyone knows green hill zone, and we don't want to upset them with new or different things. Let's shove in Green Hill Zone in all Sonic games from now on and don't upset people with unique and interesting concepts.
And thus the 2010 era of Sonic truly began.

As someone who grew up with Generations 3DS and are recently replaying, I got say that while I see what you mean, I still thoroughly love Generations 3DS. I can definitely see its flaws but part of me still sees it through the lens of that 6 y/o on his birthday going into GameStop with his dad, getting Sonic Generations 3DS on his birthday (which so happened to be Jun. 23) and playing the hell outta that game.

I really loved the whole section where you thought of different levels that have been placed in this version. Reminds me of a thought I've always had which I'll leave here if anyone wants to humor me. What if in some alternate reality, in the long wait between Forces and Frontiers, Sega decided to add an entire new era to Generations as DLC? The three games featured would be Sonic Lost World, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Forces. What levels do you think would be the best to feature in the hypothetical DLC pack?

    • @phil2160
      @phil2160 2 роки тому +3

      I'd say it would be
      - either Silent Forest (Zone 2) or Des(s)ert Ruins (Zone 2) for their originality
      - Studiopolis for Mania because the level is so iconic
      - Metropolitan Highway / Null Space for Forces because the setting looks cool (and Sunset Height looks a bit too much like Crisis City)
      - Infinite for the rival
      - Heavy/Phantom King for the boss

I would personally pick Sky Babylon for the Rush Adventure stage mainly because it's like an alternate Sky Sanctuary zone and they could do some cool things with the fire like it was done in Rush Adventure. Also, the music is legendary so there's that. 😂

  • @justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313

The 3DS version of Generations was the one I grew up with.
At the time I didn't know much about Sonic's history or what games he was in, I just saw Sonic, played through a bunch of levels and thought they were original to the game not even aware that it was made for Sonic's anniversary. For a while I wasn't able to be the Time Eater but that's because I was *extremely* impatient and was paying attention to what the boss was doing.
Even though it would probably be nice to include Fang and Blaze in the 3DS version, I feel that what we got almost perfectly represented Sonic Rivals as each of the rivals from that game are the same ones present in Generations even down to using their own abilities to try and stop the player from passing them or continuing.
What I would've preferred is if each stage you raced a rival in was from either of the Sonic Rivals games remixed and modified to fit both Classic and Modern Sonic's gameplay as the physics for both games are drastically different from Sonic Rivals 1&2.
However, there might be some evidence that some bits and pieces of 3DS version of Generations could potentially be the scrapped PSP version of Generations as the model quality is way too low for 3DS and looks like something that would be seen in the Sonic Rivals series on top of the fact a disk containing some data from that scrapped version as a image of what looks like an early version of Mushroom Hill. (It should be noted that a good portion of the data on the same disk was reported to be heavily damaged and a good portion of data leftover was removed leaving behind a select few screenshots, one of them being an early look at Mushroom Hill.)
The models used in cutscenes and the results screen seem to fit more with other 3DS games at the time, still being low poly but not to the point to where it looks off although there's a bit of a goof with Classic Sonic's model.
If you were to look at footage of Generations 3DS without the blurry resolution or had Classic Sonic's models on hand and paid close attention to the bottom of Classic Sonic's shoes you'll notice that the texture for them is the same as Modern Sonic's which doesn't make sense given Classic Sonic's shoes never had actual soles on the bottom of them.

Personally I though Gens3DS was fine, not as great as the HD version, but still a good time.
If I were to select stages so the game would be a more faithful homage to handheld Sonic games, I'd select :
    - either Green Hill or Bridge zone for Sonic 1
    - Scrambled Egg for Sonic 2 (it was mainly for the music honnestly)
    - Sunset Park for Triple Trouble
    - Fang as the Classic Era rival (taking place in TT's special stage)
    - a Sonic Chaos boss, to represent the game (probably Gigantopolis' boss)
    - Angel Island for Advance 1
    - Music Plant for Advance 2
    - Cyber Track for Advance 3
    - Gmerl for the Advance Era rival (taking place in Chaos Angel / Altar Emerald)
    - Super Eggrobo Z (from Advance 2) as the boss
    - still Water Palace for Rush
    - Haunted Ship for Rush Adventure
    - either keep Tropical Resort or have Starlight Carnival for Colours DS
    - Blaze as the Rush Era rival (in Dead Line)
    - Nega Mother Wisp as the boss (considering the boss was both a secret final boss and DS exclusive, it's better fitting)

  • @5qu3l

I think your picks for the stage, rival and boss roaster were perfect, but I would pick the Rush era boss to be Egg King (the fake final boss from rush).

Sonic Generations 3DS being called a spinoff? I get the intention, but that feels so off. Would be like calling Unleashed on PS2 a spinoff. Also would be neat if you could cover Lost World 3DS, as it's the only 3D controlling Sonic game in 3DS.

I agree with every stage you listed in the video except for Advance 3’s. I would’ve went with Twinkle Snow since all three Advance games have an ice level and it would be cool (pUn eNtiReLy iNtEnDeD) to get some representation for that. I chose it over the other ice levels because I think Secret Base and Music Plant are already great picks for their respective games. I also just love Twinkle Snow’s music.

    Here's how I'd improve Generations 3d.
-Make the stages all from Sonic's handheld career. Gamegear, advanced, rush.
-Same with rival fights, instead of the same as console, make it against characters like Fang,, Gemeral, and Blaze.
--Make classic sonic the tried 2d side scrolling and make modern sonic, adventure game play.

I still enjoy this version of Generations a lot even if I do think the console version is better. That being said, I do agree it was horribly missed potential that they didn't lean more into that handheld history thing, so it was definitely interesting to see the results of that poll you made for what people thought should represent the handheld games in this. I will say that even though Radical Highway is a Shadow stage, its still cool having it in Generations, especially for the Rival Battle against Shadow because it makes it a reference to the intro cutscene for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle which took place there.

My only complaints with Generations 3DS are the missions are absolutely bullshit to unlock, especially with the special stage missions and story-based missions, the really lame boss fights except for The Egg Emperor and Big Arms, the fact that they decided to use the Special Stages from Sonic Heroes instead of just having the Sonics receive the Chaos Emeralds from the Rival Battles like the console version, cutscenes that look like they were made in SFM and were edited with Photoshop, the reused voice clips, and the stages they chose for the 3DS version could’ve been better. The stages in Generations 3DS are: Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, Casino Night Zone from Sonic 2, Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic and Knuckles, Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure, Radical Highway from Sonic Adventure 2, Water Palace from Sonic Rush, and Tropical Resort from Sonic Colors, more specifically Colors DS. The bosses in Generations 3DS are: Metal Sonic from Sonic CD, Big Arms from Sonic and Knuckles, Shadow and the Biolizard from Sonic Adventure 2, The Egg Emperor from Heroes, Silver from Sonic 06, and the Time Eater from Sonic Generations. I think the stages they could’ve used for Generations 3DS would be: Green Hill Zone and Bridge Zone from Sonic 1 on Genesis and Master System/Game Gear, Aquatic Ruin Zone and Scrambled Egg Zone from Sonic 2 on Genesis and Master System/Game Gear, Flying Battery Zone and Ice Cap Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Toxic Cave from Sonic Spinball, Gigapolis from Sonic Chaos, Sunset Park from Sonic Triple Trouble, Speed Highway and Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure, City Escape and Metal Harbor from Sonic Adventure 2, Seaside Hill and Hang Castle from Sonic Heroes, Secret Base and Egg Rocket from Sonic Advance, Music Park and Hot Crater from Sonic Advance 2, Route 99 and Cyber Track from Sonic Advance 3, Water Palace and Night Carnival from Sonic Rush, Plant Kingdom and Sky Babylon from Sonic Rush Adventure, Crisis City from Sonic 06, Lost Foundry from Sonic and the Secret Rings, Rooftop Rush and Windmill Isle from Sonic Unleashed, Planet Wisp and Asteroid Coaster from Sonic Colors DS. For the bosses, I'd probably go with: the Wrecking Ball from Sonic 1 on Genesis, the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2 on Genesis, Metal Sonic from Sonic CD, Big Arms from Sonic 3, Fang from Sonic Triple Trouble, Tails Doll from Sonic R, Perfect Chaos from Sonic Adventure, Shadow from Sonic Adventure 2, The Egg Emperor from Sonic Heroes, the Secret Base boss from Sonic Advance, the Hot Crater boss from Sonic Advance 2, G-Emerl from Sonic Advance 3, Silver from Sonic 06, Blaze from Sonic Rush, the Egg Dragoon from Sonic Unleashed, Erazor Gjin from Sonic and the Secret Rings, King Arthur from Sonic and the Black Knight, the Nega Mother Wisp from Sonic Colors DS, and the Time Eater from Sonic Generations. The stages that you fight the bosses are: Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1 on Genesis, Death Egg Zone from Sonic 2 on Genesis, Stardust Speedway Good Future from Sonic CD, I don’t know if the stage where you fight Big Arms actually has a name, the level where you fight Fang in Sonic Triple Trouble, Can You Feel The Sunshine's level from Sonic R, the flooded Station Square from Sonic Adventure, The Ark from Sonic Adventure 2, Egg Fleet from Sonic Heroes, Secret Base from Sonic Advance, Hot Crater from Sonic Advance 2, The Moon from Sonic Advance 3, Crisis City from Sonic 06, the level where you fight Sonic or Blaze in Sonic Rush, a less bs version of the race against Johnny from Sonic Rush Adventure, Eggman Land from Sonic Unleashed, Evil Foundry from Sonic and the Secret Rings, I don’t know if there’s a name for the stage where you against King Arthur in SATBK, Terminal Velocity from Sonic Colors DS, the Void Of Time, which is what I will name that weird place where you fight The Time Eater. If we’re going with the whole 9-stages thing, then, I'd probably go with Bridge Zone from Sonic 1 on Master System/Game Gear, Scrambled Egg Zone from Sonic 2 on Master System/Game Gear, Gigapolis from Sonic Chaos, Secret Base from Sonic Advance, Hot Crater from Sonic Advance 2, Route 99 from Sonic Advance 3, Night Carnival from Sonic Rush, Sky Babylon from Sonic Rush Adventure, and Asteroid Coaster from Sonic Colors DS. For the 9 bosses, not counting The Time Eater, I'd say Bridge Zone’s boss from Sonic 1 on Master System/Game Gear, Silver Sonic from Sonic 2 on Master System/Game Gear, Fang or Nack from Sonic Triple Trouble, the boss in Secret Base from Sonic Advance, the boss in Hot Crater from Sonic Advance 2, G-Emerl from Sonic Advance 3’s final boss, Blaze from Sonic Rush, the Eggman-pirate-robot from Sonic Rush Adventure, Nega Mother Wisp from Sonic Colors DS, and The Time Eater. As for the Special Stage, I'd probably say a slightly slower version of Sonic 3’s Blue Spheres Special Stage where it doesn’t just suddenly go from 0 to 100 and is very easy to mess up with how fast it can go, either Sonic 3's Special Stage or the Special Stages in Sonic 1 on Master System/Game Gear, which are way less bs than the Sonic 1 on Genesis Special Stages with the bs physics and the fact that you'll just end up being knocked into the "Goal." I think Generations 3DS could’ve been a good game, it could’ve been as good as the Console and PC versions, with the Console and PC versions using stages, songs, and straight up remixes songs from the representation of the console games, Generations 3DS could’ve been like the Console and PC version, but, it acts as a representation of the handheld Sonic games, there have been many handheld Sonic games that released alongside the console games, Generations 3DS could’ve been a representation of the Game Gear titles, the GBA and DS games, hell, they could’ve even represented Sonic Rivals 1 and 2 for god’s sake. The 3DS version of Generations had so much potential and stuff to go off, but, we got a mediocre version of what could’ve been a good game. Think about it for a second, the Console and PC versions of Generations use a lot of material from all over the franchise, making it feel like a celebration of Sonic's history, not just as a video game character, but, the franchise as a whole. Generations 3DS has less art, less illustrations, less music, and less of the feeling of a celebration compared to the Console and PC version. I think I’m rambled long enough, so, I’m just going shut up and finally post a comment that I've been typing for around a hour.

When sis played Generations on the 3DS, I was confused. We had played every Sonic Advance on online emulation back then, as well as owning both Rush and Rush Adventure, and yet of those, only Rush seemed to appear, replacing 06's Crisis City with Water Palace.
Like, I wasn't even asking to replace the Genesis era stages (Casino Night was a good choice imo, they just didn't know they could actually MAKE levels instead of just reusing from the classic games. Mushroom Hill's a bit more meh compared to Sky Sanctuary tho, but I still wasn't asking for some obscure Game Gear stuff either even if I would've appreciated the nod to them) or Tropical Resort (if keeping in line with console due to Colors being on both was the intent), but you can't tell me you're the developper behind Rush Adventure AND the Advance titles, and then NOT include either of them in the stage lineup. You even already have Rush itself, so why is Rush Adventure absent at all???
Don't get me wrong, Water Palace was still fun, but we could've had Cyber Track (one of my personal favorite levels if only for the music alone) or Sky Babylon. For what was supposed to be the "4th Rush game", it felt more like it was trying to be the console version but on limited hardware, celebrating the history that isn't even exactly its own.

i agree with all of your ideas for making Gens 3DS better.
one thing of my own i’d like to say is it should’ve ditched the boring lackluster 3D graphical style and instead go with pixels and sprite work. Classic Sonic is a sprite where Modern is 3D maybe? idk, I just find the other handheld sonic art styles much more aesthetically pleasing because they take advantage of the handhelds low power where Gens 3DS just looks choppy and rough.

They pulled a reverse Colors by having more characters in the Console Version and just Sonics, Tails and Eggmen in the 3DS version But don’t get me wrong I still enjoyed the game, it just felt too short.
I would definitely play your true version that pulls levels from Game Gear, GBA and DS Games, while paying homage to handheld Sonic Games.

Personally as much i love sonic colors ds. I would prefer a representation of Sonic Pocket Adventure, because that is a hidden gem that many people havent played of the neo geo pocket, consider by the ones that played it as the first sonic advance. But i kinda understand why, that game felt more like sonic 2 "2", as most of the zone themes are remix of sonic 2, but with the music of sonic 3. Still, this was a great video and yeah, i am still a little bit dissapointed about generations 3ds because it really could be a celebration of the great story of sonic in handhelds.

I actually played the 3ds version first, and while it wasn't mindblowing, it was still a good time for what it was, and I liked how it brought back levels from the handheld games for the boost era, even if I never played rush or colors (either version). I suppose it also helped that I played it BEFORE the PC version, so I wasn't comparing it to that during my playthrough.
Also, the time eater is legitimately a decent final boss fight in the 3ds version. It actually feels like a BOSS FIGHT where you have to actively dodge large, highly-telegraphed attacks rather than chasing it through an endless tunnel while it poots out hotboxes you have to avoid while your friends yell about the homing shots (they could at least have some variety in their warnings, or at least not always use the term "homing shot"). Overall, nothing to write home about, but it's still kinda funny that the oft-forgotten 3ds port has a significantly better final boss fight than the otherwise superior console/pc version.

Heres my take on a better 3DS Gens
    Classic Era:
Sonic 1GG: Green Hill - I would choose Bridge because its more iconic in the GG version but definitly the "promotional material" argument is more heavy. Act 2 could use a more cavern and mountain design like the OG Act 2 in the game.
Sonic Chaos: Gigalopolis - Why Chaos instead of Sonic 2GG? Because I think it would be more sensical instead of another "console port" even tho it really isnt, besides Chaos in Japan is called "Sonic & Tails", so for the third zone been from "Sonic & Tails 2" which IS Triple Trouble JP name, it would make more sense as an exclusive duology for the GG. Gigalopolis because it makes a nice parallel to Chemical Plant and Casino Night in the OG games, which are city levels, and definitly it one of the most iconic next to Sleeping Egg.
Sonic Triple Trouble: Sunset Park - Ofc it is and you know why
Rival: Fang on Subspace - Yeah same reason as you said.
Boss: Blast Final Boss on Silver Castle - If we are gonna have a Blast mention in the game, IMO this boss is more iconic than the Chaos one, simply because its WAY MORE HARDER and frustating.
    Dreamcast/GBA Era
All zones you mentioned fit perfectly.
Rival: Gemerl on Route 99 - Why Gemerl instead of Emerl? Because Emerl is dead, and would be a hard punch seen him again. Also using Route 99 here would be perfect since the Advance 3 zone would be Chaos Angel, and Route 99 fits with the "Rival battles mentioning the Rivals games"
Boss: Ultimate Gemerl - Yes repeating Gemerl twice, but like I said, we cant use Emerl. Why not another Eggman fight? Because like in console and 3DS, he aint the second boss, it cant be him, he only appears in the third one. I thought of using Mecha Knuckles or just Knuckles himself from Advance 2, but clearly the second boss needs to be something impactfull like Perfect Chaos and Biolizard, so Ultimate Gemerl. Idk if its going to be on Chaos Angel or Exception, because how would Sonic walk in Exception Zone if theres no ground?
    Modern Era
All zones fit perfectly, Rivals and Boss too

I would've picked machine labyrinth for the rush adventure stage being an interesting idea with some cool gimick's to mess about with and the great music in the original. For colours i agree that asteroid coaster is the best stage for having it last as it feels like a dangerous environment that is a real challenge to get through in both versions with the roller coaster sections being a great set-piece to use. Finally for rush Leaf storm is a great opening level to introduce people to the mechanics with a great sense of speed with a outstanding music track in the form of "Right There Ride On".( Also minor note on the form for the rush stage roster leaf storm is named leaf forest which i don't know if that was localisation or an error on J's part.)

I beat it the day I got it. I mean the console version of Generations was short too, but 3DS Gen was extremely short. It really did feel like a rush job cause they really could've made use of the handheld Sonic games more. But of course one of the only portable exclusive levels they went with was Water Palace, with some of the worst music in Sonic history. I hated it in Sonic Rush and it's just as bad in 3DS Gen.
