From an Janapese Shiitake farmer, the freshly picked meaty shiitake is the best on the grill. Grill quickly one side with slight butter in the cup and drip some soy sauce. Fabulous appetizer. I love tempra shiitake. You may eat tempra Shiitake with salt, soy sauce, or dipping sauce. The dipping sauce is one cup of Dashi water, one TBS of soy sauce, one TBS of sake, one TBS of mirin. The Dashi can be kept in the fridge for 1 week.
I LOVE your videos!! I am learning so much from you. I try to feed my family organically, and as fresh as possible. There are so many wonderful fresh options out there that intimidated me simply because I knew bery little. Thanks to you...I have tried so many wonderful options that otherwise I might not have!!! THANK YOU!
Thank you for the step by step visual class!!! Just got my log today
You also can take dried mushrooms and run them through the food processor to make mushroom powder which can be jarred up and later used in gravies or anything else... stores easy and keeps good.
Thank you for the valuable information
great video and what a great project.
I love mushroom soup, especially oysters mushrooms that I can get from my back garden that grow naturally.
Very nice video. Thanks.
This is one of those videos that just make people want to get started! Thanks for a great guide!
You can definitely find some inspiration in Asian cuisine. In Chinese cooking, I always use one or two (dried and then soaked) black mushrooms (same thing, just that the Chinese don't say Shiitake) to add some depth (umami)...
that is handy indeed,thank you.
Excellent video, cheers
Very cool experiment!
mine just got here today!!!!!!!!!!! im so excited!!
fantastic! love your videos
Mushroom risotto comes to mind. Thanks for sharing how to grow!
So majestic mushrooms
We get Shiitake Mushrooms from our CSA weekly box and used the last batch as a steak topper. We sauted the mushrooms with salt, fresh cracked black pepper, fresh garlic, onions and olive oil and a splash of Cognac and topped our steaks with that mix, it was wonderful.
Great video, I learned alot. Thank you for your efforts.
I don't even like mushrooms, but I watched the whole thing just because you fun and interesting. Keep it up!
I like videos like this, quite nice and happy but still very informative
That park looks. so green
That spring is awesome.
I'm in Centerville, had no idea you could grow shiitakes here, really cool to see!
thanks man you really help me
Crab and mushroom bisque. French budget bread. Yum. God bless.
Good video, thanks!
Wow, that's beautiful, a running spring. When I was little, I remember visiting my grandmother and she took us to a park and where was a running drinking fountain. Probably a spring?
I liked this, thankyou!
Thats cool having the artesian well nearby. Neat project.
i love ur vids ... thanks for the info
we are from logan Ut. now in Missouri. want to start growing mushrooms. thanks for the clips.
I love this channel!
Hey! That's the ogden log! Ha. When you said no tap water that's exactly where I thought of going. Good to know this works locally
That is so cool! I want an artesian well.
Hey Produce Guy, LOLOL Love your tube but could not stop lololol after your comment of guys not asking direction - thanks that made my day lolol was having a bad one. Oh I think it started sprouting earlier because you did everything so perfect with the ice water and purified water. I think but thanks lolol
Hello,
Thanks for the video! I just bought 2 logs from them. What have been your results since filming this video? At your first fruiting, I see there aren't a lot of mushrooms on the log. Did the logs produce more mushrooms per cycle, thereafter?
Thanks,
Roselle
i'm doing shiitake and pink oyster this year. the pink oysters are a warm weather mushroom. you can use straw or coffee grounds to grow them. just have to pasteurize your medium. shiitake's do best in oak logs.
that's really awesome! :)
Thanks for your videos. I am learning and you are nice. -Laura. :)
I love it cook sautéed with lots of garlic , some olive oil, oyster sauce, light soy sauce . Yummy
Gotta say, your mushroom videos are the Shiitake! :)
Wow.. never seen a community spring like that! Fantastic. Where is that?? Thanks!
Good form, sir.
Great video - I just uploaded my own version of the shitake mushroom log and saw your video pop up. My log is one of those compressed logs... got a really great harvest from it so far. Next time, I am going to buy the actual logs like you did since it can give you years of harvesting. Great tip about how to rotate the 2 logs.
FYI - I did not use ice water in soaking mine and it still worked. I also used just plain faucet water w/out an issue too. :)
Can't wait to start. BTW it looks like Square Foot Gardens behind you. Way to go! I teach SFG.
@YourProduceGuy
i sent this video to my mother and aunt, i bet you could make some really good pizza or deep fried shrooms with these.
really nice knowing you only gotta buy a new one every 3 or 4 years.
Nice video
Shiitake mushrooms are used quite often in Japan. I've seen it put into their basic hotpots, fried with or without some sort of sauce, as well as different soups.
Sir,
How long does it take to give shock treatment to the logs after the inocolution of the spawn/ mycelium..
Nice video 2017 !
There are several things to try
choose the top variety - there are many available.
grow them in the best environment - some such as oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and may be placed outdoors
(I discovered these and why they work from gregs mushroom grower site )
I just purchased my own ma & pa logs. I'm curious to see what they taste like.
i had campbells cream of celery soap , heat it on the stove,, and pop some of the shitakes in it,, heat 3 min more and u have one awesome soap for the winter,
thanks
You have a great head of hair, reminds me of button mushroom. Thanks for the videotape. Peace
here's a few ideas you can try
select the top type - there are lots available.
grow them in the best conditions - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid areas and can be put outdoors
(I read these and the reasons they work on Gregs Mushroom Grower website )
I've been to that spring my grandma lives 5 minutes a way up on the hill I've probably seen you before that's why you looked so fammiliar
HEY!!!!! You live right by my house! I shop at that "Lee's" market ALL THE TIME!
This is a real gem. Got to be one of the neatest ideas/vids . Yeah it's sad, most commercial Ag. food is near total garbage. Even in New Zealand.
Shiitake Mushroom Risotto is what I love to make with them.
Great video! Maybe I can use the rain water we collect in our (three) large rain barrels ...? For one thing, that would permit me to employ larger and longer) logs. Rain water okay?
I cut them in large pieces with fresh sliced garlic cloves, sauté that, pour it over half brown & half wild rice as a side dish.
Or I do the same sauté in a large pot with fresh cut Kale - With the pot lid on (stirring frequently). By the time the Kale wilts, it's done and that is an awesome "Hot Salad".
here's a few tips you can try
select the top variety - there are lots available.
grow them in the right conditions - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid areas and can be put outside (I read these and why they work on gregs mushroom grower website
Where is this spring located? How awesome !
you were awesome in Independence day, Bill!
My mushroom plugs have just arrived. The plan is to create a miniature yet natural, seasonal habitat on the south side of my home. It will be called The 7 Dwarf Grotto.I will incorporate ginseng, Shiitake mushrooms, hosta plants, and ferns. I've even read that morning glories are shade tolerant. So I plan on making a couple brush tipis covered in morning glory and moon flower for added shade. My questions are... Will the Shiitake mushroom return with each season if watered regularly during dry months, and will the spores seed additional logs that have been laid out?
It's a natural spring. It flows out, and what doesn't get captured in bottles or jugs just runs off into the creek that is right next to it.
Wow spring water for taking. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
That's really cool you live near an artseian well, I'd be getting fresh water from it all the time if there was one around where I live.
Yummy
super, and fun
How did you inoculate the logs? How long after logs are inoculated do you shock the logs? Thanks
nice
Country potato soup with mushrooms. Sauté mushrooms, potatoes, onions add minced garlic, flour to make a rue, add stock, diced carrots & celery, basil, Marjoram, dill salt, pepper, a bit of vermouth & creme fresh. :)
after you have harvested the first mushrooms, can you start the process over and get more?
To add these mushrooms to Stuffed Bell Peppers, Dry them in a Dehydrator. Then soak them in Red Wine, Chop them into about 1/2" pieces, then add them to your rice and veg mixture instead of ground Meat. Bake as usual and enjoy! Totally delicious.
Oak is the best to use. You can also use most deciduous trees. Alder is also preferred.
would you advise in drilling the holes before you soak them? thanks and great job!
What kind a camera did you use for this video?
Cool video man. You explained it well and good to point out that chlorinated tap water isn't good for the shrooms, it isn't good for us either!
Artesian springs are the best! The town I live in has all groundwater. No water bills, just natural artesian water. I live out of town, but still groundwater. Through town, there are about 8 artesian springs flowing constantly!
Wow - how fun. We use mushrooms in almost everything. Twice baked potatoes, lentil soup, meatloaf, spaghetti, stuffed burgers, instead of burgers, grilled portobellos, omelets, pizza, chicken soup, potato soup, stroganoff and just about anything. Great video, thank you.
I was wondering that too. heheh
@YourProduceGuy Great points! I thought after the 1st harvest you need to buy more logs and it appeared
that what you harvest (in dollars) was about the same as it cost to start over. I may have misunderstood or
that system was not a very good one. Will look into this again. I had read about the sawdust with
chemicals etc that commercial growers use and that logs are best. Thanks!
I'm looking at growing some shiitake mushrooms but I was looking at using a hydroponics set up? Do you have to use logs or can you use the substrate?
Fresh clean delicious spring water - must be one of the few places in the US where there are no fracking wells then!
As I understand, there is no recorded incident of ground water contamination resulting from a fracking operation.
Then you understand wrong.
Arduino Tronic You do know that the stories about "flammable water" was made up right?
Did I say anything about flames? No. I am talking about water that pre-fracking well was as clear as glass, and post fracking well is coloured orange and so contaminated that the local township has had to hand out free bottled water to residents with their own wells.
*were* made up.
Nice video! Thanks, want to try this. My wife's been begging me to find if I can grow chanterelles, bur all my research shows it is not possible.
How do you know that shiitake mushroom spores are on those logs? What kind of logs should I look for?
Great video.
Have you tried growing Bear’s head tooth mushroom ?
where is that spring located?
How would hydrophonics work for saprophytic/ lignivorous mushrooms?? Drip irrigation? You can grow them on wood chips that you keep moist by a hydroponic drip system.
can you use the untreated fence post off the lumber yard, just wondering
You generally do best if the tree was only dead for about a month. If other things infect it, they won't grow.
How cool, I'm in Australia and I've found a place I can order one... I wonder if I can get someone to buy it for me for christmas!?
Hamburger + shitake = MacDonald's banckrupcy
Mix shitake with the meat. Also use the shitake stock (plus a citrus fruit) to marinate the meat. Yummy!!!
Try them out
Where do you store your log?
at the end when you talk about letting them rest for a few weeks and soaking every 2 weeks do you mean shock them in cold water again and it will fruit again? Thank you for the useful info :)
sir is it OK to use any kind logs on shiitake example pine tree ?
So, after soaking the log, do we put them outside the house? Or keep it in the house?
It's been 7 years so you may not even be with us, but I prefer putting them outside in the shade!
Yes, he said that you can put tap water outside for a few days and the chlorine will evaporate out of it or you can use distilled water or non-chlorinated bottled water.
Stirfried mushrooms put and steamed with sticky rice is what my family does its similar to a vietnamese food we ear
