  • Why not start with the hardest mushroom growing method? I'm certainly not making it easy for myself. Today I'm inoculating oak logs with lion's mane mushrooms. They'll take 6-12 months to fully colonize, and even longer to fruit for the first time, so I wanted to get them started asap.
So follow along with my new mushroom journey! It's all a big experiment, but I'm happy to learn all I can.

Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 7b. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

Thanks! I got a few mushrooms from these logs, but they've definitely had to compete with some trametes variety that also colonized the logs.

You could try another way. Drill a one inch hole through the log. That way you only have one hole and you only have to wax two sides. Or you can stack them and add more spawn and do the totem method too.

Big stack of pallets at your neighbor's house, wonder if you could talk them into giving you a couple?

Ah I wish, but I’m not super comfortable with those neighbors and I’m afraid to ask. I feel like one of the guys who comes to do whatever work they over in that yard just watches me and it makes me feel weird. But the old guy who seems to be there full time seems ok. Gruff and unapproachable, but okay.

Lol you're posting videos to be watched, yet are uncomfortable with a neighbor doing so. I watched you do this on video with my wife.

@@LeroyBrown do you not see the difference between being watched through a screen via UA-cam vs being started at by someone standing a few yards away?🙄

This is so cool! I'm wanting to grow mushrooms 🍄 as well! There are tons of resources out here in the Pacific North West including several grower businesses near Evergreen College in Olympia.

Should definitely use a log cabin approach when stacking the logs

Way cool! look forward to updates, as Scott said, try and get some pallets from your neighbor, good for building compost structures also!

I would, but I don’t really know them and they kinda make me uncomfortable. Pallets would be a good score though.

I have seen a couple tiny lions mane on these logs, but they seem to be outcompeted by a trametes of some sort since I didn't sterilize them beforehand.

Im not sure about the trees in your area but those pieces of wood look like wild cherry, are you sure they are an oak species? It may not matter at all but you might want to research if it will grow mushrooms if it is wild cherry.Have they had any growth on them yet?

Once your logs produce fruit will they fruit again unaided?

Hopefully! Colonized logs can produce for a few years given the right conditions.

I did end up harvesting a few mushrooms from these last year! Usually 1-2 at a time, and not very large overall. BUT this being my first try with it I feel pretty successful.
