I noticed that too and wondered why nobody has mentioned that yet. Sure this game has been “in development for 10 years” but it’s obvious they took inspiration from Marvel Avengers while they were making this.

It took about 7 years for them to come up with 2 mission types and a handful of enemy types.
Literally how every arkham game is framed lol. In those, it was stealth, or punch. In arkham knight they added "tank", but nobody liked it.

Charging 70-90 bucks for a AAA game then expecting you to spend more money after that is a disgusting practice that the game industry needs to stop.

Quite literally. Everyone with talent at Rocksteady was made to 'get out of the way,' so now old Rocksteady is 100 Star Games.
Who's even telling you to spend lol???? Have you watched their insider and Q&A streams? This is the most friendly live service yet where you don't have to immediately buy a battle pass and worried about missing out on it. You literally could wait 2 years after several season releases and come back to those seasons to buy the pass and finish pass that you haven't finish. We are living in inflation times and lots of people are being lay off from their jobs yet you're one of those people "if it's not free, bad industry". No one is obligating you to spend.

@@xxangelxx9128 There are plenty of industries still thriving without price hikes in the world currently , the gaming industry is forced to have massive layoffs because the products have been lackluster and obvious cash grabs are becoming more and more prevelant. This game is the prime example of a cashgrab, it's a single player game, why do you need a connection to a server? you can buy from the store when servers are down and wont get every skin variation from the bundle in the deluxe edition. Live service is killing the gaming industry and microtransactions have been out of hand since battlefront 2. And nobody is forced to buy this game as you will surely find out when the sales are released and the game is delisted in 3-4 years. They used the arkhamverse to draw in its fanbase and its because of this decision the game will be looked at as an objective failure.
Rocksteady sacrificing itself like Batman to kill the ‘Always-Online Live Service PVE’ trend.
This will be the story we talk about in 5 years.

What's clear is there's no way the game we got was the one that took upwards of 8 years that's just not possible.
There definitely seems to be a huge missing gap in the timeline. Even with all the cutscenes and stuff there's no way that took 8 years. Something went terribly wrong and they course corrected or changed massively maybe after Marvel's avengers crashed and burned who knows. (though you would think if you're going to chase a trend you would notice how it is in a very steep decline) My guess is at some point they tried to pivot and just did an awful job of it trying to paper over the obvious cracks with the usual current times nonsense and DEI, sweet baby pandering that I guess they thought would get them a new audience, sure why not.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu See you say that but you forget one big detail here and that's the fact this is WB who in both movies and video games manage to find ways to spectacularly fuck up and are so late to realizing when a trend is just dying. This is the same company that said Arkham Origins wasn't going to be patched because they were too busy working on DLC. This is the same company that farmed out the Arkham Knight PC port, rushed the shit out of it and thus it turned out a broken mess that they then recalled and when they rereleased it? It was still mostly borked. They also went so hard on online passes even when those were being phased out that some didn't even work out the box. If anyone can mandate and publish a garbage live service game that bears the Arkhamverse connection just for easy recognition? It's these guys.

Wow I forgot about the syndicate, that would’ve been way better than how they did the JL and how dirty they did Arkham Batman.
We can hate a game the same way we can love a game. No excuses for this being what it is, they had 9 years. They clearly meant for it to be the next Marvels Avengers and that's 70% the reason of why it failed in my eyes.

@@raysure1345 I don’t think It’s damage control because someone datamined a voiceline saying Brainiac resurrects the Flash and it taking a toll on his nervous system. As for the story as a whole I felt like it showed more rather than tell and it could’ve been different had certain parts been relayed better.
Imagine playing as Arkham Batman saving the league members and every time you save someone you unlock them as a character and you can switch on the fly like in GTA 5 story mode

At this point, I'd settle for imagining a world where someone at Rocksteady went "Huh, having the squad of Harley, Deadshot, Don't Care, and Didn't Ask kill our most popular characters in really gross and disrespectful ways might alienate our core audience. Perhaps we should just have a single-player narrative game where Task Force X takes out even worse bad guys with cameos from the League."

The problem is the people in charge don't care they saw this as totally fine and signed off on it even though it was literally crapping on everything the fans liked and everything established beforehand. The people in charge at Rocksteady that would allow people like sweet baby to come in and change things including character designs established in numerous games already do not care.
In fact they take great satisfaction in crapping on anything you like and anything you've enjoyed. They will piss all over it and laugh in your face both during and after.
Honestly I'd rather have had Gotham Knights been the Rocksteady project that continued on the Arkham universe. The Bat Family thinks Bruce is dead and they step in as the Court of Owls steps up. No League of Assassins, no random Man Bats enemy units, actual fun traversal and gameplay and most importantly, no slow ass Red Hood jumping magic.

This has to be the biggest waste of 9 years of development. There is no one on earth who finished Arkham Knight and said "I hope Rocksteady works on a live-service game". I always thought a Suicide Squad game with Justice League as the main villains was a bad idea to begin with. They literally couldn't do it without the use of plot armor.
At this point, DC needs to stop making Suicide Squad projects.
I mean I think hopes were really high before we ever saw a trailer or anything for this game years ago but the minute it was shown to be a looter shooter always online blah blah blah I want to be fortnite game most people started losing interest quickly and by the time we actually got the game with all it's beautiful garbage I think the writing was on the wall just how bad things were.
The only question is will this current version of Rocksteady live on or will it be taken down like volition was after the atrocious saints row reboot.
Honestly, I see what rocksteady has become now and all I can say is RIP (current) Rocksteady +rest in piss+
DC need to stop making DC projects until they sort out WTF is going on over there.

Honestly I agree with people that have said they need to give DC to someone else. Sell it to anyone that isn't Disney and we can probably get better stuff. I truly wouldn't mind Darkseid killing Harley Quinn and suicide squad for what they did to justice league. This is the only time I wish Darkseid had the anti life equation and had John Constantine as his minion and between them and Darkseids children including his daughter they create a rebellion against Suicide squad and the government for killing superheroes. I actually wouldn't mind watching Trigon get his revenge for this

That to me was something I thought was "oh okay, all of this has to be some *insert brainiac technology/magic and these JL members are clones and the real ones powers are being harnessed to use the clones... something along those lines" I don't think I've lied to myself more besides my first marriage hhahaa

Why couldn’t they just make a superman or justice league game? No one and I mean no one was asking for a suicide squad game
I honestly think in the conceptual phase they probably tried that at first but weren't confident that they could pull off all their powers and abilities convincingly, so they pivoted to making them bosses while the player characters would become samey shooty types.
I honestly think they were expecting the game to be finished and ready to release by the time the 2021 SS movie came out… and it obviously wasn’t ready by then… and still wasn’t ready to be released now.

The terrible way they send off both the character that made their studio (Batman) and the voice actor who brought that character to life not only in all their games, but in general and this was his final role.. disgusted me. Its understandable that the justice league dies, i get that, but why did Wonder Woman get a respectful and heroic death, and not Kevin Conroy's Batman? They could easily have written it to where Batman somehow breaks through brainiac's control, even momentarily, and died in service to the Suicide Squad's fight to stop him. Something, ANYTHING other than being put down like a rabbid dog unceremoniously

I think there’s a good way to make long lasting games and that’s simply putting a lot of detail in the game like god of war or red dead, I could spend months playing those games, but this one looks like the same mistake marvel avengers made

@DarkAttackYT as someone who has actuality played through both avengers and suicide squad I can tell you that this game is similar to the avengers in the same way that avengers endgame is similar to the justice league film. The one difference being the two companies have switched place in who has the quality project

Imagine if everyone in the media called elden ring a live service game and for years before it came out "dark souls sells out to go live service" was plastered everywhere, that game would not have reviewed well either. Having a skin store is not live service. It's elder Scrolls oblivion.
My big thing is I just dont understand why these companies seem incapable of learning from the mistakes of their peers. At this point we've seen Destiny, Warframe, Avengers, Anthem, Halo Infinite, all these Live Service games come out with varying degrees of success along with failures along the way but somehow every new one that comes out has the same and/or similar issues as their contemporaries. It's the definition of insanity.
Seriously.. I don't understand what it going on in the gaming industry. The entire fan base is DYING for tons of fun games! Why can't they SEE what Customers Like! They should bring back smaller games that take less time to develop and less money to make. To make a bunch of fun focused games similar to how games from the PS2 generation were.

Games take soo long to develop and trends change much faster than aaa game development takes. My bet is they were already half way through development and then avengers absolutely flopped and you can’t just dump all the effort you’ve already invested millions into.
It's interesting because out of all these games you mentioned, Warframe is probably the most successful with the happier community. And it came out first. Like, the developers of the game are pretty vocal about why they've made it this far too and no one is picking up on it.
I just expected more from this game- I spent the extra cash to play it early and just ended up refunding it cuz of how the story was written and how the fun factor burnt out so quick for me. Especially because of the fact that this is set up in the *arkham universe* (and was created by Rocksteady), I just thought the game I was getting was going to be better than what I ended up playing.

Without getting into all the ideological nonsense the writing and all the other things that people just don't seem to want to talk about I'll just say this.
This is not the same Rocksteady,it just isn't. The good people are gone and replaced by activists and people pushing the message and DEI nonsense first and foremost.
The people who made the company what it is are gone and starting their own company and I say good.
It makes it much easier to watch this new version of Rocksteady burn to ashes.
I was trying to work out why the graphics dont look great to me and then i realised that neither the enemies or playable characters cast any shadows (or very generic shadow). A beautiful golden sunset in the skybox should be cast some shadows....the lighting system looks very last gen
I thought this about the gameplay too, I haven't played but based on what I've seen especially from that main trailer a few months ago, I just kept thinking this looks like some generic ps2 action game
I wanted to see more stylish melee combat rather than just shooting.

Just because they would, doesn't mean the writers should. It might be in character for the suicide squad to act that way, but the characters the player is killing are far more significant and popular than the playable ones, so the treatment of them feels even more disrespectful.

Regardless of how good the story is, I won't invest my time playing and shooting faceless mob thorugout the game.
Avengers was a little bit more tollerable as we do get to play as the heroes (Cap, Iron Man, Thor etc).
Yeah story and other crappy elements aside, I knew this would suck the minute they thought King Shark and Captain Boomerang gameplay would consist primarily of "shooting things with a generic gun." Like talk about not getting it.
I like the Avengers game more because it didn't disrespect the marvel universe like how the suicide squad disrespect the arkham universe
@@BlazingOwnagerI haven seen a whole lot of gameplay so correct me if im wrong but it seems even Harley was done dirty. She shoots guns sure, but she also has more whimsical and silly weapons. Giant mallet, baseball bat, confetti gun, etc. From the gameplay Ive seen it just looks like everyone elses gun. The only one who gets a pass here is deadshot bc thats literally his character.

Once a game have "always online" or "live service" tag, I immediately switched off. It's not just because I don't want to pay more money for a game I bought. But also, I already knew what the gameplay design will be. And it's not the kind of gameplay I like. The same thing happened to some racing game. Always online means that the single player will be suck, and the game was designed all around to be a multiplayer competitive game for e sports and twitch streaming.
I really appreciate your take and insight with this game. I think you nailed it with “ missed potential” and “ failed to capitalize” on a really cool idea! I know the whole trend of “endless forever” model many companies want to jump on , while there are some that are successful - I feel a game like this could’ve been great as a more linear single player focus. I think their design/character creative teams really knocked it out of the park as well. I feel with so many larger conglomerates buying up studios and their IPs, creativity get pushed for investor/partner wants vs want the studio wants to make. Hopefully, with these failed examples a shift will come forth. When will that shift happen? Hopefully sooner than later.
I just wish they made Marvels Guardian of the Galaxy type strong single player experience. Hogwarts Legacy success should've been a wake-up call for WB to change this into single player but it was probably too late for that.
I feel like that game is always overlooked even though it was considered a critical success for Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix

It would have been so fun if they did something interesting like they did with James Gunn's Suicide Squad. Have a few dozen characters on the roster and they can all die permanently lol.

So, this whole time the DC villains could've just picked up guns and shoot the JL to death? Why didn't they think of that before? Who was screaming for a looter shooter around subpar villains jumping around shooting purple targets in timed/respawned arenas/paths? Fucking DC Fortnite with bad villains playing "anti-hero".

To be fair, in the game, they used Batman's contingencies to kill at least Flash and Green Lantern, and a lot of the reason they were anywhere near as successful as they were is because they had special gadgets and info that they couldn't have gotten if they weren't in the exact scenario the game lays out- And I mean, yeah, they shot them all to death, which is somewhat boring, but that's ignoring that they combatted them in other ways that just INVOLVED shooting them to death. There's not necessarily a reason any of them couldn't have been killed by a bullet otherwise, bar Superman, who they used kryptonite against anyway- Green Lantern, the Flash, and Batman don't really have any form of super strength, and although they do have powers in other ways, they're more or less counteracted within the game and it makes some level of sense that they're able to defeat them in the way they do. That doesn't necessarily stop it from being more than a little contrived, and the game has valid criticisms and reasons to dislike it, but that's not really the issue, the issues with the game lie outside of the logic in which the heroes die. Also, this is not at all anything like Fortnite and I have no idea why you bring that up- Aside from both being third person shooters, they have entirely different gameplay, genres, styles, and focuses. You can not like either game, sure, but they aren't anywhere NEAR the same game. I'm not trying to defend the game, I think it's not the worst game out there but absolutely has glaring issues and unmissable flaws, but in the scenario that was laid out, them being killed by bullets now in the way they are and not having been previously shot to death makes at least some amount of sense. Batman was never bulletproof, his armor was always just somewhat resistant, they straight-up slow the Flash down by tampering with the speed force, there's something about Yellow Lantern rings when they fight John, and the previously mentioned kryptonite thing happens for them to be able to kill Superman- That doesn't stop it from being stupid, but it still makes sense in-universe. I have more of a problem with the League being mind-controlled in the first place considering Batman fought to keep his sanity and won control of his brain against all odds in literally the game before this one and the fact that Green Lantern rings are supposed to stop outside interference through the power of will or whatever- Neither of them should've been controlled that easily, like, at all, and there's a lot of other really dumb plot contrivances and bad storytelling choices within the game but like. They don't JUST shoot every member with regular guns, they explicitly have to devise solutions because they can't do that. I wish the game we got was better regardless, this does not feel like it fits with what we've previously learned about the universe and hurts more than a little as a huge fan of Arkham, but I can still accept it and recognize that it isn't the worst thing that could've happened and it has merit as a game at the very least.
As soon as I heard “happened on JL celebration day” I got Avengers flashbacks.

The Arkham trilogy walks circles around this game. I was not disappointed, I didn't expect this game to appeal to me, Marvels avengers and Gotham knights set the pace as what to expect. The cut scenes and comedy were pretty good though
One thing to say is that at the end, there's materials you need to gather to do certain missions. If you try playing with people, then you will need a bunch of material because that's all people are doing in the end game. If you don't have it, then leave, basically. Which brings back to the issue of the missions
after 9 years since the last rocksteady game i really wanted to stay interested in this one but it just isn't there. guess i'll pick it up and play through the game in like 3-4 years when there's a solid sale
(also from the few cutscenes i've watched on here, scott porter seems to absolutely nail his role as the flash and i would love to see him keep returning for future projects)
I hope long term it's not just focused on JL and braniac if it does well enough. Task force x contracts would be really cool to make raid like content, bring in a vandall savage, gorilla grodd would be great ways to further expand the universe. Thought your thoughts were really fair. 100% agree on the JL members being what you imagined them to be in this universe and S/O to toymaker, he'd be me if i was in the dc universe. Great vid man
Some of the gameplay looks really good but it just isn’t enough to grab me. I would prefer an Arkham origins remastered and an awesome Superman trilogy.
I would have loved in the video if you went into those instances, you said where you felt they cut corners, shortened things etc

I remember playing avengers a year or two after it came pit and thought it was fun, but the live service stuff and loot grind added absolutely nothing. If they stripped all that stuff out and just focused on the gameplay and level design it would have been a lot better imo.
I feel like this game is going to fall under the same umbrella, where it’s fun but the looter shooter aspects do nothing to make it better
Haven’t played it yet, but I feel like it would not have been too hard to make the squad members more unique, instead of them all using guns like this is Borderlands or Destiny. Like Harley mainly using different melee weapons and Boomerang mainly using boomerangs and explosives. And each member could even get more Justice League equipment as the game progresses, like the Green Lantern Ring or the Lasso of Truth, making each squad member feel even more distinct from each other.
Harley- melee (hammers, bats, swords, and other unique DC melee weapons)
Boomerang- AOE and multi-hit weapons (boomerangs, batarangs, explosives)
King Shark- Heavy attacks, Aquaman’s trident 🔱, and more water based attacks
Deadshot- all firearms, Cyborg’s tech, Bat family equipment, Green Arrow’s bow
Highlight of the game for me was Wonder Woman. This was one of my favorite versions of her and it was cool that she had a version of her movie theme.
I don’t understand why she was treated with a heroic death, even Harley is sad about it for no reason? Why did she like WW so much? WW is an asshole to them the entire time. Literally every other member of the JL gets zero screen time after their death, maybe 1 lime and that’s it done. Yet WW gets a whole emotional scene even though we have zero idea who she is? The Batman who we spent many years and 4 games with just gets popped in the head but WW gets a big moment? Tbh I hate to say it but I can’t help but see it as the one woman getting a grand death and the 4 men just being offed like it’s nothing. One literally gets pissed on, the one who literally saves Harleys life ffs.

@@thesenate7710WW is the only member of the entire JL that doesn’t have a “no kill” rule. She would’ve offed them if they didn’t have to work together. The game having the SS treat her like a saint because she currently wasn’t their enemy is strange to say the least. Especially so considering the fact that Bruce had every chance in the world to murk Harley in the Arkham franchise but still chose not to and Harley offs him with a hypocritical monologue about how much of a horrible person he is.

The amount of stuff on screen at any given moment is just an instant headache maker for me.
The Justice League is almost ALWAYS 7 members... so why did they only have players kill 4 members? That bothered me
This is really constructive and hopeful video. Maybe it'll turn out alright in a few dlcs cause it seems they're heading in that territory, where more story would be told once the jokester gets added (they won't make 4 new characters to play as so they gotta give him sharkie as a buddy)

It's clear the new inexperienced writers they hired after the old ones were basically forced absolutely hated the old writers and many of the old characters and were eager to kill it all off and 'do better.'

Very fair mini review! Even though you said Gotham Knights had no fun factor. Me and my wife had a blast in GK play Nightwing and Batgirl in co-op. Captain Boomerang was awesome. Looking forward to your thoughts on the story!

i think maybe we've reached an oversaturation point on suicide squad and (especially) harley quin to begin with. that kinda puts this game behind the 8 ball to begin with.

Suicide squad reached its expiration date right after the first movie. In 2017 they seemed like an outdated hot-topic cringe factory.

Props to you for being fair and diving into every perspective. I have no intentions of playing this game, too similar to The Division, but with super heroes and villains, been there done that. But again, props for distinguishing yourself from all the others.
Still working through the story at the moment, I can find the fighting repetitive, but I am finding the story interesting.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between the characters in the squad and had a lot of fun with the gameplay but I agree, actually taking on the JL was very anticlimactic and disappointing. I hope that a year from now they’ll be able to turn things around and have a bunch of really fun content to play because right now doing the same 4 mission types over and over again isn’t a super fun or engaging endgame to play.
I’m hoping they take us to Gotham,Central City and other superhero cities.

I'm actually really liking the game. But I went in with the mindset knowing that it was a live service game. I think that's the main hangup people have. It's not going to be for everyone, but calling it terrible when it does a decent job at what it was actually designed to be is kind of a disservice. That being said, I feel full price for the game is too much for it, especially with battle passes down the line and paid cosmetics. It should have been half the cost. I grabbed it for like 18% off on GreenManGaming and I still think that was a bit too much, but I had the money to waste.
I think something that will help is all the content they plan to add at no additional cost at least for the foreseeable future. As a live service game, it can only get better. The story is too short as it stands and some of the systems are very repetitive. But I love the combat and the traversal. And like you said, it has some of the best expressions in a game I've seen. The animators did a fantastic job, Harley Quinn is especially amazing.
It’s not the live service that bothers me. It’s the fact, it’s a generic boring 3rd person shooter, where all you do is go shoot this, then go shoot that. Ok how do we defeat all the bosses. Ooooh I know, let’s get the anti person material and shoot them. No deviation at all with all the boss fights. Just shoot em and you win. If it was that easy to take down the justice league, then how can we call them super hero’s. Doing a decent job at being a mediocre 3rd person shooter isn’t great praise. All well enjoy the game, for me I just personally cannot see how people like the game, unless your a massive suicide squad fan.
@@jlopez240gaming7 How else are they supposed to take down crazy strong superheroes? There's gonna be some sort of gimmick. I have a feeling things aren't as they seem though. Other than that, it plays like other games of its ilk. Destiny, The Division, etc. I'm liking it.

Major missed opportunity of using this IP. Game should’ve been a rogue like where you play as dozens of different c-tier DC villains and every time you die you play as a new c-tier villain but get to keep your upgrades from your last playthrough. They’re the Suicide Squad, they’re supposed to die🤷

Man.. the moment they announced this game I already made up my mind to buy it
Rocksteady and Arkham series probably kickstarted my passion into story telling, atmosphere and immersion, comics, and then games and other literary media in general, I just want to get that rocksteady “feeling” that I got when I was playing their other games
So to me buying Suicide Squad feels like picking up a rose while pressing on it’s thorns, just a bittersweet experience that will hurt me, but willing to go through for the enjoyment I will get from it
I will have fun, as I did in the alpha, but the potential of what this game might have been will continue the shadow over the experience definitely, I’m passionate enough about this to even start seriously reviewing analyzing every single aspect of it, but, thanks for the genuine review, I agree with your criticisms, can’t wait to see it for myself

My wife and I are enjoying it so far and we like looter shooters. We have both sunk hundreds if not thousands of hours in Borderlands 2 & 3, The Division & Division 2. We have played a lot of Diablo IV but got bored having to start a new character every season. We mainly do single player and trade off playing but it's fun to do co op.

Is it the best game on the planet? Not even close. Is it the worst game on the planet? No. Most of the people online haven’t even played it they just feed off negativity. I keep seeing people whine about live service but when they started making this game live service was supposed to be the big thing! People are just burnt out of live service now….

the last of us 2 is an actual game with gameplay that expands on the original and has a complete story while this plays like a crackdown game and isn't even finished

Had this on my wish list for years… SAD what the gaming industry has become. I genuinely hope there are more major successes from independent indie studios like in the case of Baldur’s Gate 3. Games take so long to be developed that we need to vote with our wallet for the long-term before we will see positive change.
After watching the video, I agree. There should have been more story, importance to characters besides just being vendors and rework skill tree to give different abilities or cooldowns etc. They could have done all this and added an endgame where there’s a separate skill tree, resources etc just for the endgame. Instead the whole story, characters, skill tree just serve the endgame (live service).
