This situation is unacceptable. Platform holders have a responsibility to be clear with consumers, and I would go as far as saying that they need to stop shipping discs that do no function.

The threats by fanboys to DoesItPlay is unfortunate but also hardly surprising. Fanboys are the worst no matter the console brand, graphics card or processing unit. They ALWAYS defend bad corporate practices, derail enthusiastic discussion and make gaming a toxic place.
I'm beginning to wonder about the source of these death threats. It's almost an eventuality for anyone who says anything online to receive death threats. I wonder if corporations might farm out bots the same way they'll commission fake Amazon reviews, pad their ratios, etc.
@@12ealDealOfficial It's just people being possessive and acting like animals under the shroud of anonymity. These same people wouldn't have the balls to say the same things in person but will hurl insults and act tough online anytime you make whatever piece of plastic they're in love with look bad.
I don't think it's companies getting involved though, that'd be pretty stupid from a legality and liability perspective. If you know anything about fanboys they'll happily shill for the company for free. No problem.
@@TerraWare Tinfoil hat time: When I was looking for work in a neighboring city (LaGrange, Georgia), I saw an ad for a remote "machine learning engineer." The position was posted by a third party firm whose specialty was "optimizing and teaching AI driven search tools." The job description entailed repeating searches over and over again with various search engines, clicking on the "intended result," and "moderating ratios for public discourse." I didn't take that job, but that's where I get my theory. The listing listed signing an NDA as part of the job description.
What really gets me is that the Playstation fanbase understood the CBOMB problem as soon as they brought it up and encouraged them until Sony fixed it, but the Xbox fanbase just seems to not care at all about discs. You can see it in physical sales split in the UK for example, most of the time the split is like 80/20 in favor of Playstation.
@@sachoslks I’m from the UK too and I know exactly what you’re saying. I must be one of small minority of XSX owners who still buys physical where possible despite the issues and couldn’t care less about Game Pass.
I think most videos on this subject miss the most important point: at the moment, Xbox One and Series X|S systems cannot be used without a Microsoft account at all.
On PS4 and PS5, you can just go ahead and create User1, earn trophies, have saves, be able to change your name, avatar, etc. And you can backup and restore the console offline with USB storage.
On Xbox, this functionality is not present. One user of Xbox console = one Microsoft account. Saves are cloud only, achievements are cloud only, most system settings are cloud only, your name and avatar comes from Microsoft and can only be changed on the server, etc.
So before tackling other issues, Microsoft first has to implement actual offline mode for the Xbox, and only then they can remove Microsoft account requirements for initial setup.

Windows 11 is requiring a MS account as well, so looks like there is no reversing this trend in Redmond.
I agree with the majority of what you’re saying although I have one issue with the PS5. PS5 game saves cannot be transferred and saved onto USB. You’ve got no other option but to take out a subscription for cloud saves otherwise you can wave goodbye to your saves if anything goes wrong with your console. In that sense I prefer Xbox’s version of cloud saves as it’s completely free without a subscription.
Never knew there were that many issues with Xbox preservation. I knew for the longest time that were plenty of games that barely contained any information on the disc, though hearing that original Xbones can play some games offline is new to me. I hope Home Mode will help keep my Xbone X alive for longer, since even the Xbox 360 versions of Halo had the online shut down eventually.
Really, it's unfortunate that we still need to keep older Xbox consoles around or just own other consoles just to have our games be preserved in case the servers shut down. Don Mattrick's "We have a console for those that can't get online, its called an Xbox 360" quote forever haunts the brand.
The quote still “haunts” the brand because people know that Mattrick was right. He tried to warn us, people didn’t listen. The 360 didn’t have this DRM shit. The DRM from Xbox One never stopped, it was put in the Series consoles. Microsoft didn’t listen to people back in 2013 like they said they did.

Thank you for your video. I explained the same thing on my (small) channel on June 27, 2021 in French. The more youtubers there will be in the world to denounce this, the more we'll have a chance maybe that this kind of idiocy won't be repeated for future consoles (I'm certainly dreaming, but we must keep hope 😊)!

Good video, the suggested solutions are spot on. It's The only way I can see them fixing the issues, bundle some of the config through a system update.
I just want a full backwards compatibality Xbox/Playstation console without having to keep making room to have my old consoles out to play my games on.

Great video. I am on PS but the digital ownership rights issue is important to me. If Sony moves this way as well I will be done. It's sad so many folks not only don't care but make excuses for these companies trying to move to this (because it's not currently impacting them negatively) and screwing over future consumers.
Thankfully the Playstation fanbase (and Nintendo for that matter) still cares a lot about physical games. I think for Playstation its around 35-40% physical vs digital sales and for Nintendo its even higher. The split gets even more even when looking at big single player AAA games, for example Horizon 2 sold more physical than digital in the UK. Its the Xbox fans that for some reason just seem to not care about it. All in all the PS5 still feels like a classic console, you can use it completly offline and most of their physical releases are good, so i hope as you say they never forget that and get too cought up in the service side of things.

Only thing missing is mentioning that you can not even use an Xbox without a MS account whereas you can use a PS4/5 without ever connecting to the internet ever, no PS account needed.

Hey guys I got a possibly stupid question. Do you think it will be possible to bypass the whole "Series X needs connection to Microsoft servers" problem in the future with the advent of (I'll just make up some lingo bear with me) third party servers that, legally or not, can host the files that normally you need to connect to Microsoft to acquire? DLC, games, INITIATION OF YOUR CONSOLE (crazy that's required) all available courtesy of hacking communities? I think back to pre-emulation era when the concept of roms and emulators was unfathomable to most people but now it's common knowledge and user-friendly. I could see something like this emerging out of necessity / demand if Microsoft stops supporting a console that requires their service. Even today we have games and expansions to existing games that are no longer available for download so already there's reason for smart people to start cracking away at this.
Btw I love the games hiko flashes at around the 4:00 mark as examples. All banger hiko-type games :)
It IS possible. The best you can do in the meantime is keep your console on as low a firmware as possible until the community gets around to it, but there's no telling how long that will take.

PS5 uses 100GB discs whereas Xbox doesn’t. That may be why some large games can’t fit. Will you cover Nintendo shutting down their Wii U eshop? I think they are the worst when it comes to all this. They purposely shut down Virtual Console so that your purchases do not carry over but instead to lock everything behind a Switch Online subscription where you can’t buy nor download any games. Just rent.
The series X has the same 100GB optical drive as PS5. MS just cares about making a unversal disc that works on both generations of consoles. They can make a series X only disc with 100GBs of data on it if they wanted too.

the biggest thing I've seen from theses hardcore xbots is but pc is code on disc or fully digital. but fail to realise pc has emulation to keep old games alive but in xb there is no such thing.

A bit late to this but the ps5 doesn't allow you to play a games if you're using an older firmware, you need to update the system to play games. I don't have an xbox series X but it might have the same "issue".

Some games canes with both Series X and X1 version on disc. Some examples are Immortals Fenyx Rising and Balan Wonderworld. People are saying "those are small games, big games won't fit on a 50gb disc". That's no excuse! Smart delivery discs supports multiple discs usage.
Exactly! Look at Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. The game supports Smart Delivery and it’s a 2 disc game. Too bad the Series X version is a download. Another example of a two disc game is Metro Exodus Gold Edition, which at least had a content download disclaimer for the Series X version
Why not just require dual disc games for all Xbox One compatible games launching after the Series X if the game can physically fit on them? One Xbox One disc and one Xbox Series X disc. And have both discs be treated as the license when online.
You'd still have issues playing Xbox One games previously made before the Series X though. But for that, why not just launch the Xbox One version by default on the Series X? They can include the config files in the Xbox's system software as games and updates come out.
Then the user can update the console either with data stored on the disc (like on 360) or via an offline system update.
For solution 4, a game can have as many as 4 different builds of it (Xbox One/S, One X, Series S, and Series X), so you wouldn't be able to fit it all on the disc. Well I guess you don't need to put the Series S one on the disc, but still.
Holy sheet 😳 I didn't realize this was a thing on Xbox. I was thinking about expanding my console range to include the Xbox family series of consoles and I'd be so confused if this happened to me and I had no access to internet after setting up the Xboxes initially.
Since they're already allowing users to download any games through the mobile app regardless of it they own it, why not just let us download not only config files but full builds of games from a pc. Even after their service shuts down, the community can keep hosting the files.

When Tomb Raider was demonstrated on the OG Xbox prototype, it mustn't have been necessarily pirated. PS1 discs read on a PC fully and without any issues! When you look at the disc in Windows Explorer, depending on how they prepared the disc, it can be messed up. However in an emulator, the disc reads correctly, and can be run directly from the optical drive! There are several sneaky ways that game developers can use to deliberately hide some data or present different data on the disc in Explorer (such as using BE TOC on the Playstation and messing up the LE TOC, or messing with the Path Table), but the emulator doesn't try to access files on the disk through the Windows filesystem parser, it makes disc sector reads, and interprets the filesystem exactly like the Playstation does. VGS and Bleem could both run the black disks on a PC without piracy.

this situation is the reason I bought a PS5, I was an avid PC gamer until denuvo came in, and fucked up that ecosystem, so i'm not gonna pick the platform where 90% of physical games are unplayable offline

The upgrade of 30gig for RE isnt that just the entire game? The game unpatched ps5 is around the same size if I´m not mistaken. That´s the main reason why this gen I´m probably skipping Xbox for the first time.
Yeah, it's called an update but really they're just sending you a whole new build.
The code would be an absolute mess if they had a single build with everything in it and checked your hardware. It would also take up a lot of space.
On the 360, they would just download a patch and apply it to the ROM on boot, even if digitally installed because you can't write a disc.
On Xbox One and up all games are installed to the drive, so instead of patching the rom at boot, Devs can directly push the needed files to you. Each update has a commit history (a list of files that are changed, added, removed), so when connecting to the internet the console goes through all those commits to see what changed.
That also means that rather than essentially making a ROM hack with a patch, the dev can rewrite the entire game. I believe that happened with Halo MCC, since probably EVERY file changed they just make you redownload the entire game if you have the disc installed.
Since every file probably differs in some way between the two builds, you have to download everything. Or they just make you download everything when switching builds to be safe.
An issue with this strategy is overtime more and more files will change, so you can run into a situation where if you haven't updated in a while, the needed files could be larger than the amount of remaining space you have left. For a game that's not bad since you can just delete the old versions of the files before downloading new ones, but for system software obviously that doesn't work.
Windows reserves a few Gigabytes for updates, but after not updating for so long (say you have only a 32GB eMMC laptop), that might now be anough and you'd need to reinstall. And also they force you to update to the latest version, not a less recent one that may not have this issue.
The Microsoft thing is very unfortunate. Already with what happened in 2013 with Xbox One, they should learn from their mistakes.
In any case, in some cases the problem is not Microsoft but some developers who that release incomplete games and then you have to connect to be able to download the usable or final version.
Well, as I demonstrated - Microsoft is also apart of the problem as they self published both Halo and Forza as incomplete disks.

As players we should demand that the games come out complete, regardless if they later add updates or expansions such as new game modes, a new difficulty, etc, the initial version of the disc should always be able to be played offline.
A game is not preserved unless you can copy the files somewhere else and play it on other hardware, such as emulation, clones, or FPGA implementations. One day there will be no functioning Xboxes, one day the optical discs will break down and no longer function. Old software has been lost because the hardware to read the media no longer exists. If the software had been copied to newer media then this would not have happened.
Idk man, you can get emulators for ps2 ngc wii and older for series s and x and recently xenia got released so many 360 games will be playable, corps dont care about preservation the community does emulation is the way

I have 2 possible solutions. 1. The trillion dollar company doesn't ever turn off its servers. 2. Microsoft continues on this path of an Microsoft account required for Windows and Xbox so future versions of windows and Xbox consoles continue to use your Microsoft account and the new upgraded software and hardware ( on all sides servers, OS, consoles etc) has to implement the requirements of the old stuff to function correctly. P.S I got no problem going all digital as long as Microsoft guarantees me I'll never lose access to my stuff ( content and libraries). So 40 years from now the same game I bought today better be accessable.

Good 'ole Hickory, making that black pill just a little easier to swallow. "You will own nothing and be happy." I don't know why I stopped connecting my consoles to the internet, but now I appreciate the Switch that much more. Never once downloaded an update for any of my games on Switch. Just finished 128 hours of Xenoblade Chronicles DE without so much as a frame drop. If not for HM, I'd think Sony and MS were just two flavors of bland without much identity, but at least you can run emulators on Series X.
Sony is as good as Nintendo, as Hickory said you can use the console completly offline, you dont even need a Sony account to use (you do for Xbox). Most physical releases on Playstation are good offline.
@@sachoslks Nintendo (and most Japanese studios in general) have a higher quality standard for "good game on day one" than western studios. I see what you mean about content on disc, but Sony only has one Japanese studio now and only one true Japanese exclusive (true console non-timed exclusive), which will be whatever the next Gran Turismo is. I had this comment earlier with another Sony fan and even Ghostwire: Tokyo is a timed exclusive for Sony this gen.
